Everyone’s Talking About Katie Holmes and Her Roll Ups.

So, for the past couple of weeks, budding trendsetter Katie Holmes has been spotted in NY on a number of occassions, coffee or notebook in hand, rockin her rolled-up baggy jeans. Clearly she’s intent on doing for the baggy jean what she did for the high-waist and depending on your taste that could mean either loving it or totally hating this micro-trend. Thoughts guys? Do we think she should stop with the baggy jeans rolled up baggy jeans?

What do you think of Katie Holmes and her roll ups?

Tartan: Trendy or Tacky?

Aug

2008

As a real live Scottish person, I must admit to finding the perennial appearance of tartan on international catwalks a bit, well, tricky. Even when fashion falls head over hills for all things Scottish, I find the whole look somewhat tacky and faddy. So it was with a heavy heart that I watched the faux Caledonian armies stomp down the runways of D&G, Henry Holland and Ralph Lauren, triumphant in their over the top plaid. But perhaps I have judged too soon?

The Sartorialist: An Unparalleled Influence on Fashion

The day when a little known blogger can scale the heights of the fashion industry in a space of two years and become iconic has arrived.

The Sartorialist” himself, Scott Schuman, was recently shot for a GAP ad and I have to give Mr. Schuman his due props for what he has come to embody for men’s and women’s fashion. His eye is sharp and has no gender bias (well, occasionally he does shoot more women than men…) as to what is sartorially suitable for either sex plus his commentary can enlighten the staunchest anti-fashion critic.

Horror: The Goth Look is Back for AW08!

Aug

2008

Isn’t it funny how some fashion trends seem to repeat themselves every few years, because I have memories of doing the ‘Goth thing’ way back when I was only sixteen. Now ten years later and I’m going to have to dig deep in my wardrobe and don some lace and velvet that I’d thought would never be deemed trendy again.

Of all the trends for next season, the “Goth” look isn’t hard to emulate. Just take an LBD with an edge and some serious attitude like this Fendi Petal trimmed dress, add a few accessories and you’re good to go.

So, give this look a go this season, if you dare! $3530 available at Net-a-porter

Harem Pants: A Do or a Don’t?

In my case its a don’t. Among my many obsessions - oversized bags, jodphurs, high waisted jeans..the list could go on - harem pants have never been one. In fact, they’ve always posed somewhat of a fashion dilemma for me. Admittedly there are some who can actually pull them off without looking like they belong in a circus (no, I’m not referring to MC Hammer) or even worse a music video from the early 90’s.

Key Items for AW08: Bowler Hat

Ever since spying one of the new Topshop ‘on the buses’ ads, I am suddenly harbouring an irrepressible urge to buy a bowler hat. They’ve been creeping in for a while of course, a quaint and charming replacement for the over-exposed trilby or ubiquitous headband, but I’ve always admired them in a vaguely detached “yeah-they-look-quite-good-on-Clemence-Poesy” kind of way rather than as a viable style choice for my own particular head.

We Heart Bebaroque!

tights_020808.jpg
As something of a hosiery enthusiast, I am predictably exited by the abundance of pretty pretty tights on the A/W catwalks. Trouble is, whilst I can admire the illustrated legs of Chanel, Chloe and Rodarte from afar with an adoring sigh, the chances of ever getting my chipped-nail-varnished paws on such items of beauty are rather low. After months of searching for tights of a more affordable nature (given the inevitable likelihood of laddering), and with only a feeble pair of lace tights to show as my spoils, I was delighted to come across Bebaroque.

All Eyes are on the Neck for Autumn

Perfect your swan like poise and ballerina posture because the neck, it would seem, is having something of a moment. A quick scan of the A/W runways suggest it as the body part de jour. From the regal ruffles of Alexander McQueen and Givenchy to neck-encircling jewels at Balenciaga and Marc Jacobs to the furs at Dries van Noten, this is face framing dressing at its best. Neatly presses collars peeked out at Chloé while soft jersey polonecks peered down from countless catwalks.
