Check and lumberjack style shirts have been with us for a couple of seasons now and it looks like they’re not going to be going away just yet. For autumn winter they’ll look great with the trend for 1950s work-wear looks, and will work really well under the host of shearling leather jackets that we’ll be seeing so many of come next season.

For now though, the checked shirt has a fresher more relaxed feel to it, and looks just as good with dark slim jeans as it does with a summer chino. For a slightly mod take on the checked shirt take a look at this long sleeved number from Carnaby street boutique Merc. With its roots in 1960s culture, Merc make really wearable shirts with a defined, more tailored shape that’s reminiscent of the mod look.

In bold red with a classic green and navy check running through it, the ‘Neddy’ is a smart move away from the casual lumberjack shirt into a more refined tailored feel. Wear buttoned up with straight dark blue jeans for a real mod look, or with an open neck, rolled up sleeves and  lighter chino style trouser for a spring afternoon casual look.
