Last night’s episode of Project Runway was my favourite so far this season. It was cool to see what the designers could do with trends that we like to pretend never happened – like neon, dancewear, shoulder pads, overalls, poodle skirts, etc. As the designers grouped into teams of 3, I put my money on Kitt, Christian and Jack, who had to combine zoot suit (which I had never heard of, but I think is like those MC Hammer get-ups), fringe and pleather into a cohesive collection.
It was a bit shocking to see some of the personalities rear their ugly heads. I thought Ricky would break down into a sobbing mess when Victorya , who wins the closet tyrant award – nastily chewed him out over his design and leadership skills. As much as I like his personality, Ricky needs to step it up next week and send out a garment that impresses the judges, otherwise he’ll be the next to go.
In other breaking news, Elisa is growing on me. Initially, I was just perturbed by her overall weirdness, but now I’m touched by her genuine naivete and sweetness. She’s like a mystical creature from another world trying to learn the mannerisms and language of humans to blend in. I don’t think she can win the competition but I can see her hanging on for a few more weeks if the others continue to help her.
In the end it was Jillian, Rami and Kevin’s collection that won the challenge. Even though I did love the overalls that Jillian put together, there’s something about her that bothers me. Maybe it’s because she reminds me of Baby from Dirty Dancing or maybe it’s the fact that she hasn’t cracked a smile since week 1. Live a little! Chris was sent home for his failure to make shoulder pads look good , an impossible challenge in the first place. Even though I won’t miss his so-so designs, I will miss his larger than life persona.
Picks to make it to fashion week:
Rami, Kit, Christian
