America’s First Lady is no stranger to the odd designer frock or two, but whilst attending the State Dinner honouring the Republic of China in Washington last night, Michelle Obama outshone her previous sartorial ways in a stunning floor length Alexander McQueen gown – we think our love for her just grew that little bit more.

Never one to be predictable on the fashion front, Michelle chose the late and great British designer to wear to the high end event, after all, the label’s still highly coveted and in good stead under Sarah Burton’s reign.

The gown itself was a dream of red silk organza and black swirl detailing which created rose-like patterns – a similar commercial version to a look from the resort 2011 collection – and seeing as they were hailing China’s President Hu Jintao, the country’s lucky colour red seemed an appropriate choice for the special occasion.

According to the Guardian, Ms. Obama certainly had her work cut out to showcase her fashion credibility, bearing in mind other guests included designer Vera Wang and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour – we don’t blame her for pushing that boat out.
