Carla Bruni-Sarkozy may have given her first real speech yesterday, since touching down in the U.K on Wednesday, but it’s her outfits that have had the first and last diplomatic word.

Intentional or not, Carla’s wise decision to wear Dior for her 2 day trip to the UK was a success. Being that the house is French and headed up by a British designer, the ex-supermodel kept fashion critics in both countries at bay.

Opting to recycle Jackie O’s demure and sophisticated style for the day and to emulate Lady Diana’s elegance in the evening…also incredibly astute. Jackie O’s visit to the U.K in the 1960’s was a sartorial success and as for Lady Diana…well no need to point out the obvious.

What is up for debate however, is her choice to wear flats the entire time. She could be forgiven when she decided to pair black pumps with those flawless grey tailored trouser and skirt suits but we’re not so sure the same can be said for the gorgeous evening dresses.

Speaking about his wife yesterday, French president, Mr Sarkozy said,

“I think she has been an honour to our country, not simply because of the way she looks, but beyond that everyone understands that this is a woman who has belief, sensitivity and humanity.”

Well, if this is the image that has been communicated to us Brits, it’s safe to say that Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy’s clothes played a major part in getting the message across!
