Unable to take the plunge and actually chop my hair, I have found a less permanent way to have a spring fling with my ‘do. When you are known for your scruffy ‘bird’s nest’ locks like I am, it is amazing the difference it makes when you scrape your hair off your face into a neat top knot.
Scattered all over the S/S runways from Lanvin to Rodarte, it is a severe look which contrasts beautifully with all that femininity and flowers for Spring.
After years of hiding behind the comfort blanket of my curls, it is scary to suddenly feel so bare and exposed with so much, well, face on show. But it is empowering too, like charging force with all the strength and discipline of a samurai warrior. Whilst there is an element of Hepburn-ish elegance, the look needn’t be all secreterial stuffiness.
I have been stealing inspiration from the quirky style of Swedish singer Lykke Li, whose little bun always stands out perfectly against her stripes and sequins. Or turn to queen of ‘quirk’ Miss Carrie Bradshaw whose infamous oversized chignons were a regular visitor to her scalp. My favourite, however has to be Little My from childhood favourite “The Moomins”. At least now I know why she was always so grumpy – my ponytail was so tight my headache is still in recovery……
