Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger is best known for his smart but effortless preppy aesthetic, and thanks to newly wed Kate Middleton, prep attire has recently seen an all time boom in the style stakes.

But even though the Hilfiger empire is an American brand, that hasn’t stopped Tommy wanting to dress such a beautiful English rose.

“Catherine has a very classic yet modern style,” said Hilfiger. “I would love to dress her and I think she already has the makings of the perfect preppy!”

But it looks as though Tommy will always stick to his American roots, judging by his answer when asked who epitomises the Hilfiger brand today.

“Gwyneth Paltrow instantly springs to mind,” he said to Vogue UK. “She is effortlessly elegant and has a strong sense of what works for her. She takes a classic piece, a white Oxford shirt for instance, and wears it in a modern way; a slight roll of the sleeve and pop at the collar is very charming and very preppy.”
