The expression “save the best ‘til last” has never been more apparent if the autumn/winter 2012 season of New York Fashion Week is anything to go by. We have a lot of collections to get through, so let’s crack on… 

As always, Marchesa was a definite stand-out collection for us, as countless fabulous dresses made their way down the runway to what we imagine was a soundtrack of “ooh”s and “aah”s. The signature intricate Marchesa detailing was there in both short and playful dresses as well as full-on, jaw-dropping gowns. We predict editorial pages and awards-season attendees alike won’t be able to get enough of this collection.

Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy were inspired by Aboriginal paintings for the latest collection, while Victoria Beckham went down the chic and smart route for her more affordable Victoria collection. Michael Kors went for a slightly more conservative feel this time around with much buffalo plaid and fur parading down the catwalk, but the collection wasn’t without a fabulous evening gown or four.

There were pastels aplenty at Oscar de la Renta, as well as many skirt suits that you know Cher Horowitz would be dying to have in her wardrobe. And of course, an Oscar de la Renta collection wouldn’t be complete without the fab tulle gown, which of course was saved until the end.
