How To Mix And Match Patterns In Home Design

Thinking about revamping your home? Forget about minimalism, beige-on-beige color schemes, or Scandinavian design. Right now, interior design trends are leaning towards maximalism as it comes with a riot of color, textures, and patterns to add more personality and liveliness to your living spaces. In a recent interview with CNN, designer Solange Azagury-Partridge said that maximalism is a medium for self expression. “Isn’t your home the place to feel the freest to express yourself? That’s why maximalism works so well and will always be relevant,” she adds.  Part of this fresh and bold aesthetic is using different patterns to decorate your home. When done right, mixing patterns can give your abode a cheery and exciting vibe. Here’s how to mix and match patterns in home design.   Pattern Drenching Last year’s color drenching trend has given way to pattern drenching as homeowners are starting to focus on all things personalized. This interior design technique involves using one or a combination of different patterns and prints in a room. But to have a cohesive look, it’s important that all the patterns have at least one similar color running through them. So for instance, you can have a floral print wallpaper on your bedroom walls and a floral bedspread, but see to it that there’s one unifying color in both prints. The same goes for mixing different patterns– you can have a paisley couch and striped curtains, as long as there’s a common color in both prints. Further enhance the look of your space by decorating with framed photos that suit the room’s theme. For example, you can print and frame photographs of wildflowers to go with your all-floral print bedroom.  Mix Vintage with Modern Patterns Mixing patterns from different eras can make your space look timeless and charming. It also makes your home more inviting, so […]

Dresses Getting Boring? Layer on Sweaters in These 9 Incredibly Stylish Ways!

Are you stuck in a style rut, pairing the same sweater with the same dress day after day? Do you yearn to unlock the secret to creating jaw-dropping sweater-and-dress combinations, but don’t know where to start? What if we told you the ability to create showstopping sweater-and-dress outfits is easier than you think? Ahead, we walk you through everything you need to know to expertly pair sweaters with dresses. You’ll learn foolproof tips for combining colors, textures and silhouettes so you can create chic, put-together outfits with minimal effort required! The First Step: Evaluating Your Dress Silhouette When pairing a sweater with a dress, the foundational step is to assess the silhouette or shape of your dress. Every dress style has its own unique flair that requires a complementing sweater shape to balance it out. Here are some common dress silhouettes and what sweater styles work best with each: Fit and Flare Dresses As the name implies, fit and flare dresses hug the body through the bust and waist, then flare out into a full, A-line style skirt. To balance the flared skirt, you’ll want a more fitted sweater on top. Turtlenecks, slim-fit pullovers and mock neck sweaters enhance the waistline beautifully. For extra flair, tie a sweater around your shoulders or neck for a scarf-like effect. Bodycon Dresses Slinky, tight bodycon dresses scream sex appeal. The clingy fit hugs every curve, so balance is key. An oversized, slouchy sweater softened the look. Try an exaggerated drop-shoulder cardigan or an extra baggy v-neck knit. The sweater provides coverage while the dress peeks out to show off your figure. Shift Dresses Shift dresses have a straight, box-like shape that lacks definition at the waist. Pair with a belted, tie-front or cropped sweater to add feminine curves back in. Peplum sweater styles […]

How To Set A Budget For Your Wedding Dress?

You’ve probably dreamed about your breathtaking wedding gown for years. Now that the time has finally arrived to “Say Yes to the Dress,” you might be wondering where to start the process. Ask a bridal expert this question, and you’ll most likely hear, “Start by setting a budget.” After all, you don’t want to shuffle through endless racks of wedding gowns only to find the dress of your dreams doesn’t match your budget.  To help you avoid the heartache and establish the right wedding dress budget, we recommend following six easy steps. First, What Influences the Cost of a Wedding Dress?  The three main factors that determine the price of a wedding dress include: The Dress Décor Your dress décor relates to the embellishments it comes with. Sequins, lace appliques, beading, and Swarovski crystals could make your dress more expensive. If you’re looking for a glamorous bridal gown at an affordable price, you can have your professional seamstress add customized embellishments. Or, you can choose to replace pricey embellishments with statement jewelry pieces.  The Fabric What your dress is made of determines how much it would cost. If your wedding gown is crafted from fabrics like tulle, silk, and embroidered lace, it will come with a heavier price tag. On the other hand, if it’s made from fabrics like chiffon, crepe, and cotton, it will offer high affordability.  Hair and Accessories  Your wedding outfit isn’t just limited to your gown. Your hairdo, accessories, shoes, veil, and jewelry play a critical part in putting your look together. If you’re looking for a wedding dress on a budget, be sure you keep the price of your hair and accessories to a minimum (ideally between $150 to $400). How to Set a Wedding Dress Budget  Crafting a budget for your wedding dress? Here […]

Many do, including the likes of JCPenney and Walmart, which is a far cry from when Lane Bryant was the only well-known company to tailor products to this market. Retailers will continue to sell products for plus-size women in 2022, but we’re likely to see some changes. In particular, plus-size trends will focus more on fitting curvy women and highlighting their natural features. Plus-Size Fashion Trends To Come Mix (Patterns) and Match (Solids) Is Coming Back At some point in fashion history, prints went out of style. But recently, like with neon-soaked outfits in 2019, prints have started to make a comeback. Now that they are, we suspect they’re going to be even bigger in 2022, especially in the plus-size clothing market. Why? Because not only can prints take your plain-Jane outfit from an eight to a ten, but when you have a plus-size body type, prints can also help give your body a slimmer look. Particularly for women who are less confident in their skin, prints are a fabulous yet subtle aid to highlighting assets and disguising insecurities. In 2022, we’re likely to see vertical stripes dominate the plus-size fashion market, especially when paired with solid colours. Mixing vertical prints with solid colours can help create a flattering look for curvier bodies, and one of the best ways to hide areas you don’t want to highlight is to wear a printed T-shirt that steals the attention with solid bottoms. Interestingly, we’ve started to see this trend already in plus size bathing […]

10 Romantic Valentine’s Day Outfit Ideas

If you’re looking for a good way to set the stage for a hot date on Valentine’s Day, you’ve got to start with what you wear! And, with all the potential for romance, there are so many fun ways to take this year’s V-Day look. Whether you go lacy, silky or classic red, there’s an outfit for this holiday that totally suits you and your personal style of romance. We’re here to help arm you with some of the best outfit ideas so you can head over to your fave fashion boutique and plan an evening you’ll remember forever. Lacy Black Dress and Strappy Heels—Ladies, meet the new LBD! The lacy black dress is a great go-to for date night, especially if you pick a version that’s a little on the sexy side, like a curve-hugging mini dress or something with a lower cut neckline. Spaghetti straps are great, too, but wearing them bare is probably a no-go in the middle of winter, so go for long sleeves or layer up with a soft, silky kimono. Silky Blouse with a Calf-Length Pleated Skirt—Is anyone else as obsessed with the long, pleated skirt trend as us? This flirty, feminine look is about as romantic as it gets, especially when you pair it with a top featuring some silk, lace or florals. The mid-calf skirt is perfect for showing off your statement heels, too. We say go for something with a sexy ankle strap with this kind of skirt! Floral Mini Dress with Cute Booties—A short floral dress is just what you need to get yourself into a flirty state of mind this time of year. If romance is the goal, grab a frock that features classic floral icons, such as roses. Add a cute pair of heeled booties for a fun, […]

From making a list of the items you need to buying as much as possible online and of course, wearing comfy shoes when you do decide to tackle the shops. Ralph Lauren’s Collection At NYFW Is Everything We Aspire Our Wardrobes To Be

Wow, wow, wow….And just like that, our hearts literally skipped a beat when we saw Bella Hadid in this amazing metallic gold pleated dress. Courtesy of Ralph Lauren, this stunning piece (which may we add would be absolutely perfect for party season), made it’s debut at New York Fashion Week. Held at the Ralph Lauren Madison Avenue boutique which was converted into “Ralph’s Coffee Shop”, unlike other designers during fashion week whom are presenting what they think we should be wearing this autumn/winter, Ralph Lauren gave us a beautiful collection for Spring/Summer’19. Dominated by gold and black, with sprinkles of white and florals (because it wouldn’t be a spring presentation without florals), the collection was the epitome of elegance and sophistication. Best of all, it’s available to shop right now, but sadly we can’t seem to find the dress in question *sigh*. We shall keep you posted! [Images]

Tips for Planning the Perfect Spring Wedding in the South

The blooming cherry trees and magnolias, the warm and mild weather and the lush greenery make springtime the perfect time of year for a Southern wedding. It’s for these reasons and many others that spring is the most popular season for weddings in the South, with a large chunk of weddings below the Mason-Dixon line taking place between April and June. If you’ve chosen this timeframe for your Southern nuptials, you’ve got plenty to look forward to. But there are a few things you need to know before you book that plantation, barn, garden, winery or orchard for your dream Southern wedding. Here are a few of our very best tips. The Weather: A Safe Bet, But Preparation Is Key Spring weather in the South is one of the primary reasons why brides and grooms choose it as the ideal season to say “I do.” With temperatures lingering comfortably in the 70s and 80s, this time of year provides a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat that blankets the region in July, August and September. Here are some things to know about the weather: It May Still Be Hot—The fact of the matter is that springtime is getting hotter and hotter, with above-average temperatures becoming the norm all over the country. Prepare for the worst—that is, temps in the high 80s-plus (Atlanta once posted a record high of 93 degrees in April, remember)—by ensuring that guests have ample shade, water and a comfortable place to cool down. If your wedding day looks like it’s going to be on the hot end, hand out paper fans as favors.   It May Be Rainy—Though mild temperature-wise, the spring does bring a slightly higher risk of rain in the South compared with other times of the year. If you plan to get married […]

Valentino Showcased Its Pre-Fall 2019 Collection In Tokyo

Hosting their first ever show in Tokyo, Japan, last night also saw Valentino drop a pre-fall collection for the first time since the 1980’s. In stark contrast to the concrete warehouse it was held in, the dreamy Pre-Fall 2019  collection celebrated Japanese culture and was dominated by luxurious red pieces along with gothic black looks and sprinkles of monochrome and florals. On why creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli looked to Japan for inspiration, he said, “I have always been fascinated by the people and the culture of Japan, more than the surface.” He continued, “I didn’t want to take the images of Japan and treat them in a couture or Valentino way, but I wanted to bring the culture of Japan because it is close to my idea of beauty. For me beauty is about diversity, it is about individualism, and intimacy.” To conclude, red petal roses littered the runway while Kaia Gerber and Adut Akech sashayed down the runway in coordinating romantic gowns. Embroidered Denim Jacket: Gucci vs Topshop?

With the weather currently in transition mode, only a denim jacket will do. And with embroidered denim here to stay for another season, of course it makes sense to snap up a floral embroidered denim jacket. There’s no shortage of options available at the moment so the question is whether to invest in a designer piece or play it on the safe side and watch the pennies? Currently reigniting a love affair with fashionistas everywhere, Gucci have offered up their take on the trend with this light blue denim jacket beautifully embellished with a cute bee on the collar and needle point florals while Topshop have gone in the direction of a vintage wash jacket with butterflies and flower detail. Pretty Is Back In Fashion For Spring!

Pretty is back, and isn’t it about time? Oh, there’s plenty of hard-edged stuff out there if you want to go that way, but with all the glorious flowers bursting into bloom at this time of year, it seems more fitting – and fun – to follow the one fashion trend of 2017 that celebrates femininity.  Here’s what to look for: Romantic Swimwear Romantic suits with definite lingerie influences, and boho styles with delicate handcrafted touches are the freshest looks for the beach. Tankinis aren’t a new thing in women’s swimsuits, but this year they fit right into the feminine trend, still baring as much as you dare, but not putting it all out there. Leaving a little something to the imagination can be a lot more intriguing than wearing something that says “hey, look at me!” Floaty Dresses As light as a warm breeze, you’ll find floaty dresses in florals that rival a garden show’s finest. Whether you choose a dress that’s short or one that grazes your calves, you’ll find yourself walking like a lady maybe for the first time in years. The runway shows were full of beauties from Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen, Rodarte, Valentino, and other vaunted designers, and their influences have filtered down to wonderful dresses for day and evening in every price range. Billowy Sleeves We know you’ve sweated bullets at the gym to get those amazingly toned arms, but they don’t have to be on display all the time. Change it up from the hard body sleeveless look with long sleeves that billow softly from shoulder to wrist and add new interest to tops and dresses. One of the most romantic looks out there is the troubadour shirt with voluminous sleeves and a neckline that you can pull down off your […]

Jessica Alba Is Blooming Perfect At Mechanic: Resurrection Premiere

Much like off-shoulder pieces, the denim jacket and mules amongst a few other trends, florals re-entered our wardrobes in spring and show no signs of leaving anytime soon. However autumn floral prints are slightly different to the bright and bold flowers we saw in spring/summer ’16 – they’re darker and edgier in comparison. Channelling autumn/winter ’16 florals beautifully was none other than Jessica Alba who looked gorgeous as always in a strapless, floor-length floral gown by Dolce & Gabbana at the Los Angeles premiere of Mechanic: Resurrection. Keeping accessories to a bare minimum, Jessica opted to carry her essentials in an emerald green version of Edie Parker’s “Jean” clutch. Simple yet sophisticated. We’re loving her look. Are you?

Floral Print Suit For Spring? Yes, Please!

Before you say it, we know we’re in the middle of winter. Temperatures have seriously plummeted and snow has finally graced us with it’s presence. But, that doesn’t have to stop us from dreaming of all the lovely outfits spring holds in store for us, which of course includes florals.  Florals are as committed to spring as the super cute David Beckham is to our beloved Victoria, therefore each season designers must look for creative and wonderful ways to rework the much loved print. Our fave interpretation so far has got to be Jenny Packham’s 70’s inspired floral suits. Drawing inspiration from two legendary icons – Nick Cave and Patti Smith, Packham’s floral suits are bang on trend, as our obsession with all things 70’s is set to continue right on into SS16. Groovy Design Revival: How to Retrofit Your Home in 70’s Style

Those of us of a certain age who wore the afghan coat when it was definitely groovy to do so, will no doubt have no hesitation in getting all nostalgic about all the other items that are so firmly associated with the 1970’s. Nostalgia for the 1970’s, the retro era, is becoming very popular in 2023 – most people think of free love, high heels, flairs, and big hair when they think of the 1970’s, but one thing that boomed in the 1970’s were bright, gaudy, neon signs – according to Shiela from the Voodoo Neon Sign Shop, “Neon signs were put up in all major cities in the 1970’s – advertising everything from shoes to cars.  Prior to the Internet, the physical location of your shop was everything – without a prime location and bright neon sign you were nothing You can now back in time quicker than Austin Powers with a retro makeover of your home and there is definitely a groovy design revival for all things 70’s. Many old trends are becoming popular again. As an example, personalized neon bar signs for home or custom man cave neon sign can help you get that 70s feel within your home. To stripe, floral or gingham?

Stripes, florals and gingham take center stage this season with designers offering fresh and playful takes on each print respectively. Naturally, florals secured the leading role, although they face serious competition from ultra-chic gingham, while bold and powerful  stripes are determined to make a statement. Whether you opt to fill your wardrobe with all three or just one, integrating any of these three major trends needn’t be hard work. Some of our fave celebs have recently been spotted swapping their skinny jeans for flares and we love it. Yep, 70’s fashion is a huge trend this season. Kill two birds with one stone and nail both trends with this gorgeous knee-length floral dress from Esprit and platforms or a pretty floral top with retro-inspired flares and wedges for a trendy feminine approach.   STRIPES Admittedly, stripes can be very tricky to pull off, so keep it simple. Take a style tip from Altzurra and pair a tanned belt with a flattering shirt dress or wide-legged nautical trousers with a white wrap blouse for a non- complicated relaxed look. Play with proportion and incorporate stripes of all size. Large or small, vertical or horizontal, stripes won’t be going out of style any time soon. Gingham has taken on a life of it’s own this season and there’s no hard fast rules when it comes to pulling off the print. Revived by designers including Diane von Furstenberg and Bottega Veneta, a gingham dress complimented with a cute cardi makes for the ultimate spring look. Be a tad more adventurous and bare your midriff in a gingham skirt, sandals and finish off the look with a satchel for a great weekend get-away outfit.

How to decorate your home with a ‘Downton’ style

As well as providing quality entertainment and making us fall in love with the characters, the TV drama Downton Abbey has also shown us how to decorate our homes to make them look elegant and beautiful. Downton Abbey The program has just completed its fifth season, ending up in the early years of the 1920s. The era of the flapper has not truly begun, so the stately home is still exhibiting the elegance of the pre- and post-war years. If you want your home to have a little of the grandeur that the Abbey displays, you should be looking for luxurious fabrics and antique-style wooden furniture. The living room The living room or lounge is your reception area, the place where you bring your visitors, so this is the area to really pile on the opulence. Choose seating that has fabric rather than leather upholstery and do not be afraid of mixing your patterns. You can have large florals mixing with stripes, alongside plain fabrics. Hang floor-length curtains at your windows and be sure to be generous with the fabric to create a good drape. In terms of the color palette, you should aim for period colors, such as greens, reds and golds, but they should be in a muted tone rather than big and bold. The dining room Downton Abbey often includes scenes in the dining room and it has to be said, the family’s classic dining table does look stunning when dressed. Subdued lighting is key in the dining room, so dress the center of your table with silver or glass candelabra, the fussier in design the better. Decorate around the bases with colorful flowers and accentuate the centerpiece with greenery. Classic dining rooms are often decorated in deep, rich colors; red is a great choice, particularly if […]

AW14 Jewellery Report: Spring Fair & LFW

Jewellery has immersed itself as an indispensable part of fashion; gone is the divide between costume jewellery and fine jewellery. More specifically, since the rise of the elaborate bib necklace and body jewellery, accessories are longer a decorative afterthought but a key feature of any outfit. This was all unquestionably apparent at the most recent Spring Fair trade show at the NEC back in February and also at London Fashion Week AW/14. Today, no outfit is complete without the perfect piece of jewellery and this has been no secret at recent trade exhibitions. But whilst on one hand we have bold and daring left-field designers such as KTZ adorning their catwalk models in shameless trimmings, we also have some tenacious classics creeping back in. Statement Pieces: KTZ, Simone Rocha & Jane Bowler At LFW, KTZ certainly made its mark with its powerful and authoritative accessories, along with Simone Rocha’s unashamed applications of large, gold adornments. Jane Bowler, who unveiled her collection at the London Fashion Week designer showrooms, addressed the audience with a new concept of how jewellery and garment design could merge into one discipline, using accessories to replace garments. Newcomer, Nadia Dafri made an impression at the February Spring Fair fashion show with a flamboyant and intimidating colourful collection which is sure to set light to the fashion scene. Or for something more accessible, Sarah Angold’s Topshop collection released to the public with a bang last year, featuring some eye catching and uber contemporary acrylic pieces. Floral Flutters for AW14 Surprisingly, florals have found a solid platform in AW14 designer collections. As a trend which flickers in and out of the limelight with fabrics, floral designs have never had much credence in the accessory design world. Floral prints, which can easily be dismissed as ‘juvenile’, ‘twee’ or ‘girly’, […]

And a NAY for. One-wear piece: As much as we love the riot of colours and print, ask yourself this: will I repeat-wear these beauties, or are they a one-hit wonder? Now, repeat this question until you get an (honest) answer. Heel height: Unless you’re a professional heel wearer with a stash of foot-numbing products at the ready, these heels won’t make for an easy, breezy walk. No. At 11.5cm (4.5 inches), you’ll be towering above your friends, not to mention feeling the burn (in the name of fashion, obvs.) MSGM multi snake sandals, £270.83, available at My-Wardrobe.
