Name: Victoria Haynes
Occupation: Fashion journalism student, wannabe writer and travel addict.
Favourite designers:
Matthew Williamson, Anna Sui and Alice Temperley. I love embellished, embroidered, floaty designs. I’m a bit of a hippy really.
Which trends do you think will dominate fashion this spring?
I think there’ll be a lot of white around, it’s a summer classic that keeps rearing its head. And I think shorts will still be hanging around from Winter, but they’ll be teamed with flip flops instead of boots. I think accessories are going to be big and bold.
How would you describe your style?
Undefined. I change a lot, but always seem to go back to the hippy look. I love layers, and relaxed floaty fabrics. I don’t like wearing the same as anyone else, and do a lot of shopping on ebay!
Which item of clothing in your closet gets the most wear?
Jeans, without a doubt. I wear them with nice tops, under dresses, under skirts, to university, out at night…. I don’t own any trousers which aren’t jeans!
What are your top tips for those wanting to be a fashion journalist?
Work hard at school and college, and enrol on a good fashion journalism course. Training is vital in this job, and a good degree will start your CV off nicely. Also, do as much work experience as you can, not only on fashion magazines but other publications – it will get you more contacts in the long run. Finally, try and get some work published on your own, this will look great on your CV. You have to be persistent and quite thick skinned, because for every article you get published, ten will get knocked back! But don’t give up, your persistence will pay off and eventually you’ll get where you want to be!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Believe in yourself. My parents always told me that, and I suppose they’re right. If you don’t believe in yourself, how can you expect anyone else to?
