Not to say that I’m shocked (yes, I’m an ex-professional soccer player), but from the looks of the current climate in fashion, we men need to start eyeing our fellow male athletes for sartorial advice.

Our idea that the habiliment of an athlete remains as clammy and scruffy as their oft-worn sweats and hoodies is far from the truth. Despite the rigours of shuttling to and fro from sweaty training sessions, match days and the like, the athletes of today still find time to step out in a fashion-forward way on and off the field of play.

Some like David Beckham and Thierry Henry can boast designing the odd capsule collection for Giorgio Armani and Tommy Hilfiger, respectively, while others like Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese soccer phenom playing for Manchester United, can lay claim to juggling balls beside Canadian supermodel Daria Werbowy for US Vogue.

So enough talk and let’s bring you a few notable athletes we feel have an impeccable fashion game. Take notes lads!

Cristiano Ronaldo shows of his dexterity in a Dior Homme suit by Hedi Slimane, a Lanvin shirt, and Thom Brown tie.

Thierry Henry models his Tommy Hilfiger capsule line at Hilfiger’s flagship store on Regents Street.

Beck’s can’t go wrong with a cardigan and plaid!

Sean Avery sports a wide pointed lapel vest.
