Is it a bird? Is it a plane? NO! It’s Jeff Koons’ techni-coloured art car for BMW. The car, a 500 bhp M3 GT2, debuted last weekend at the notoriously gruelling Le Mans 24 hours endurance race on June 12th and 13th, driven by British touring car champion Andy Priaulx, and what a sight it must have been.

The company’s latest ‘art car’ is the 17th in BMW’s legacy of collaborations with artists that has seen greats including Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and David Hockney create their very own artistic manifestations of the BMW.

Koons’ multicoloured extravaganza is created by a series of vinyl strips with a lightweight double coat adhesive layered on top to minimise disruption to the car’s efficiency. In his own words, Koons describes his art car as “an explosion of life, [it] tries to capture the energy of the life experience, and the fact that this car has one true purpose in life – to win. Sure, it’s going to get brutalised, but it wants to go, it wants to perform.”

To hear Koons talk more about his work watch this exclusive video as he discusses his BMW art car with BLAST at Centre Pompidou, where it was unveiled in Paris.

We just want to know if we can get a paint job like that on our cars?
