Ouch! In his latest bout of controversy, Roberto Cavalli has blasted Chanel, calling it a label for ‘grandmothers’.
The 70-year-old designer recently opened a standalone boutique in Japan’s trendy Aioyama area and said he specifically chose the location (a relatively quiet street behind the busy shopping district of Ginza) because he knew young people would visit it while their mothers and grandmothers were shopping in Chanel.
“I want it to be that shoppers come to find me,” Roberto Cavalli said. “They shouldn’t find me by accident walking in Ginza. I think this is a really winning strategy. I will demonstrate this to the dear Messrs. Chanel or other people like that. Fine, you dress the grandmothers and the mothers and I’ll dress their kids. Even if I’m old, other people don’t know that. I make very young fashion.”
Roberto is pleased with his first store in Japan and is apparently now considering opening a restaurant in Tokyo, not hugely dissimilar to the successful ones he has in Milan, Dubai and Florence.
