This week’s Rate or Slate is a real corker, because we love it when celebrities really step out of their style comfort zones and embrace the unexpected.
First up, taking a brazen fashion stance – something she is more than partial to – is Katy Perry. Attending the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Paris, Katy ensured her popping blue hair colour matched her outfit, as she donned a black shift dress and contrasting cobalt blue coat from the design duos spring summer 2012 collection.
Devil Wears Prada actress, Emily Blunt, opted for a Naeem Khan fall 2012 number at the LA premiere of her latest movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Usually seen in form-fitting red-carpet dresses, this was definitely a silhouette detour for Emily.
DJ, model and muse Leigh Lezark brightened up a dull, grey, wet Paris fashion week morning by sporting a standout, canary yellow Sonia Rykiel suit to the designer’s fall 2012 show; a brave colour choice by the standards of someone who is almost always seen in black.
It’s over to our Style Jury….
My Fashion Life News Ed says:
Katy Perry: ‘You’ll hardly ever find me say anything negative about Katy Perry, and this time is no different. I would have lost the tights or worn my hair down as it looks a tad secretary chic (an uber stylish, gorgeous secretary, mind) but this is definitely my favourite. Gorgeous!’
Emily Blunt: ‘I think this dress totally drowned Emily, which is a shame because I usually love her red carpet style. If the hemline was shorter and she added some bold, flirty accessories, she could have got away with it but something isn’t right here. I don’t think the shoes help either.’
Leigh Lezark: ‘Kudos for going for something so bright and out of the ordinary on what looks like a grey and miserable day, but I personally would have left the jacket open and gone for something tight underneath to make the outfit less frumpy. Love the bag though!’
You Say:
Katy! The retro diva, I so love her style’ – @zwit178rheiya
‘Seriously high ratings…well done Katy!’ – Marilyn via Facebook
‘I have to say that I LOVE all three!! Love Katy with blue hair and in blue, she pulls that colour off beautifully. Two thumbs up xx’ – Lo via Facebook
Verdict: Rate to the power of one!
This week’s Jury verdict is painfully split! You love the high-octane fashion choices the stars make, but we’re not so sure. Katy Perry can really do know wrong, and the Viktor & Rolf cobalt blue number sits perfectly with her quirky personality. A definite RATE from My Fashion Life HQ!
Bring back the fitted red-carpet look, Emily. The Devil wears Prada sexy, not puffball skirted dresses! The dress is beautiful, just not on Emily.
We’re not sure we agree with Leigh’s 80s style boardroom ensemble. Yes, it’s in the hue of the moment, and yes, the dull Parisian weather needed a Crayola yellow kick in the derriere, but something a little more structured and fitted would’ve worked better on Leigh’s slim frame. The orange clutch against the mono-tone suit is a great break-it-up trick, one we’ll definitely be trying ourselves.
