Rachel Zoe Facing Criticism For Lack Of Diversity At New York Fashion Week Presentation

Rachel Zoe’s autumn/winter 2018 collection is gaining attention for all the wrong reasons. Held in L.A, prior to New York Fashion Week, the collection itself which was filled with lush velvet fabrics, glitzy dresses and tailored tuxedo suits, was warmly received by those in attendance. After the show, Zoe gave a heartfelt speech saying, “It’s funny, everyone is saying it’s the year of the woman, the funny thing is, every year is the year of the woman. And I don’t feel like we should ever single out a year. As a designer, I set out to make glamorous clothes that somehow can work into your everyday life. And I’ve seen so many of my designs come to life on so many of you here. And I just want to say it’s an honor and I want to say thank you.” The problem? Judging by the models, specifically the use of just one non-white model, the glamorous clothes in question are being created primarily for white women. As a result the runway show is facing intense criticism for its lack of diversity, with Instagram account diet_prada posting a picture from the presentation along with a clip from Zoe’s reality show with the caption, “If you need to relieve yourself for a second from the tokenized casting nightmare that was the @rachelzoe show, watch this.” Zoe has yet to respond, however with comments such as “0 Asians 0 brown women 1 black woman. Go home” and “You should have more diversity in your models. No excuses!” left beneath a picture from the presentation on Zoe’s Instagram account, the designer must be aware of the backlash.

The fash pack came out to play last night at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City for The CFDA Awards (fashion’s equivalent of the Oscars). Naturally all of this season’s signature trends made an appearance on the red carpet – namely off-the-shoulder, slip dresses, cut-outs and glam-goth. And while there weren’t too many jaw dropping looks to choose from and quite a few fails (we couldn’t really quite get our heads around Ciara’s choice of outfit), there were some who made the best dressed cut…. The Rachel Zoe Project is officially over

Sad news for all fans of The Rachel Zoe Project… After an impressive five-season run (despite some pretty bad ratings for the last season which we won’t mention) The Rachel Zoe Project has been cancelled. Pass the tissues… “We’ve done five years. I think it’s time to probably move on,” Rachel said. “The Rachel Zoe Project was meant to be a show solely based on fashion and designers and all of that, and clearly it wasn’t. I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t want my personal life on television.’” She does have a point, as the earlier fashion-focused seasons were far more entertaining, but that’s not to say we’re not going to miss it. Especially her son Skyler who pretty much made the latest season! RIP The Rachel Zoe Project, thank you for all the hours of entertainment – it’s been a good run! [Daily Mail]

Rachel Zoe appointed ShoeDazzle Chief Stylist

Despite her clothing collections not doing as well as she had hoped, we always knew that Rachel Zoe would be alright and bounce back. And as we expected, she’s landed on her feet again – literally in this case! The blonde stylist-to-the-stars has just been named as the Chief Stylist for ShoeDazzle, a role previously held by Kim Kardashian. The service works just like the wonderful StylistPick, whereby the shoes all come at a set price (an affordable one at that -$39.95!) and are selected to cater to each individual by people in the know; in this case: Ms Zoe! “It is really taking things to the next level in terms of elevating the brand of ShoeDazzle and some of the other offerings we are going to be having soon,” said CEO and co-founder Brian Lee. “I don’t think there is anybody else in the world who understands trend as well as Rachel. I think we are bringing in the very best, and I think that elevates the style aspect of ShoeDazzle.” We think she’s the perfect choice too – after all, ShoeDazzle reportedly surveyed 50,000 of its customers to find out which celeb they’d most like to take style advice from, and Rachel was the clear winner. “Rachel Zoe was number one on the list by far,” Brian Lee said. “There was no second place.” Members will start receiving their personal product selections from Rachel this month – and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the TV commercial airing any day now! Karmin and Rachel Zoe team up with Coach for Sleigh Bells vid

Great news for all you Coach fans this morning… the brand has partnered with Youtube sensation Karmin and stylist-to-the-stars Rachel Zoe to make a fun music video of the duo remixing the good old holiday classic, Sleigh Bells. We know an abundance of musical stars have taken on the song over the years, but we reckon this version really holds its old among the rest. Definitely one to put on this year’s Christmas background music CD for sure. (Don’t pretend you don’t have one!) And as there’s only one day left until December and it’s white and frosty outside, we think it’s finally acceptable to allow yourselves to get into the festive spirit if you haven’t already. If you like Karmin’s original remix of the song, you can download it for free on the Coach website, which is also where you’ll fin a behind the scenes video of Rachel and Karmin in action. If you love the song, video and Coach in general, then keep a beady eye on MFL on Monday morning, because we might just have something very special for you… watch this space! Rachel Zoe creates NBC comedy about herself

Don’t let it be said that Rachel Zoe doesn’t know how to cut loose and poke fun at herself. The celeb stylist turned designer and her husband Rodger Berman have reportedly sold an autobiographical comedy show to NBC based on a fictional, slightly exaggerated version of herself. The show will be executively produced by Rachel and Rodger, but the pair have also enlisted the help of Aseem Batra to write the script, and the Emmy award-winning Todd Holland to direct it. There’s no word on when it will be ready, who else will star in it, or whether it will even come to the UK (fingers crossed!) but we’ll keep you posted! We’re intrigued to see Rachel’s character; we wonder if her adorable son Skyler will be making an appearance in the show too? Don’t expect to see Rachel Zoe at London Fashion Week (or Selfridges)

Just last week we heard through the grapevine that all was not well in Rachel Zoe land after her TV show faced being axed and her couture clothing label was rumoured to be doing badly too… but now there appears to be even more bad news for the famous celeb-stylist-turned-designer. As well as Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Nordstrom reportedly losing interest in her line due to poor sales, it’s also been announced that her collection will no longer be stocked in Selfridges either. And as a result of this, she therefore won’t be attending the Burberry show at London Fashion Week. Yikes! “Her London launch didn’t go as well as she’d hoped,” a source reportedly told The Daily Mail. “Selfridges dropped her clothing line because it was very expensive. They still have her shoe collection but the clothing line wasn’t as successful as hoped.” Unfair? Or is Rachel Zoe’s clothing line far too expensive for this recession we appear to still be in? [Telegraph]

Rachel Zoe is a fan of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s $17,000 fur bag (PETA however, is not)

A few days ago, the blogosphere blew up when it emerged that Jessica Biel used her $39,000 The Row backpack as a casual beach bag. Of all the places you don’t wanna get sand, that piece of back candy should always be top of the list! However, now it looks like another backpack from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s award-winning clothing line has got people talking. Celeb stylist Rachel Zoe took to her website to rave about how much she loved the multi patchwork fur backpack (which also comes in black shiny calf skin, slate shiny alligator and black alligator) and reportedly retails for just under $17,000. Not everyone shares Rachel Zoe’s love for the bag though – PETA has once again hit out at the Olsen twins for their use of fur… “If it looks like a troll and acts like a troll, it’s probably a Trollsen Twin — or someone wearing one of their new $16,000 totes, which are made from the fur and skins of innocent animals,” a spokesperson for PETA told Gossip Cop. “What the Olsens lack in creativity, they try to make up for in shock value. Sadly, it’s the foxes, calves, and alligators — who often have the fur ripped off them while they are still conscious and able to feel pain — who pay the dearest price.” Yikes! Time for you guys to weigh in…

Iris Apfel: is this Rachel Zoe in the next 50 years?

Rachel Zoe might be respected in her field but, unfortunately for her, nobody in the real world actually likes her. This is the harsh reality of being a celebrity stylist. Rachel has the ability to strike fear into the hearts of even the most resilient designers and celebrities she’s working with. However, there’s one woman who makes her look like a Disney Mousketeer in comparison. That woman is Iris Apfel. The 90-year-old cuts a striking silhouette; all huge jewellery, opulent clothing and flying-saucer spectacles. There isn’t much the eccentric fashion icon doesn’t know about style and, boy, she doesn’t hold back. Speaking about walking down Fifth Avenue, she once said, “It seems that the fatter and uglier people are, the fewer clothes they wear. The shorts and flip-flops and tight jeans on butts that go from here to Poughkeepsie.” That, and the fact she believes size 10 (UK size 14) stretch jeans should be outlawed, means she’s created more than her fair share of controversy. While Rachel Zoe might have been hailed as the leader of the pro-skinny movement in Hollywood a few years back, nobody quite does body fascism like Iris. Iris is currently working on her own jewellery collection, regularly speaks at lectures and is an unlikely New York socialite. While she seems to have the energy and zest for life of someone half her age, it’s reassuring to know that, when she does finally retire from all this fashion malarkey, we have a suitable substitute in everyone’s favourite demonic stylist – Rachel Zoe.

How many suitcases does Rachel Zoe need for Paris?

Apparently Rachel Zoe doesn’t take too well to packing lightly, if this picture of her poor hubby pulling along a whole trailer of luggage on arrival in Paris is anything to go by. Paris Fashion Week does, of course, require a more discerning approach to packing, but 11 bags and suitcases and two Louis Vuitton duffel bags for one week’s stay in the city is excessive by anyone’s standards. “Final stop..Paris via Eurostar train..@rbermanus is hating me right now..xoRZ,” Zoe tweeted at the weekend. Yes, let’s look at Berman, who through gritted teeth is probably wishing he didn’t marry a super-stylist-cum-designer right now. Still, just think of all the outfits in there! The ridiculously high heels! The fierce faux fur! We’ll recap just what she assembled from her baggage soon. [Styleite]

Lusting after Rachel Zoe’s Alexander McQueen Folk tote

Endorsements and cult followings are not scarce in the world of celebrities. Naming handbags in admiration of eminent personalities – the iconic Hermés Kelly and its more contemporary counterpart, the Mulberry Alexa – prompts an acquisition frenzy. Yep, we endure the pain of endless cash rationing in the hope of some day saving enough for the ‘It’ bag we barely saw two minutes ago perched on the arms of the rich and famous. And then, before the ‘It’ bag has even had its moment, the next covetous creation is already gracing shop floors. So allow us to introduce the lust-worthy Alexander McQueen Folk tote – this season’s most sought after accessory (a now-permanent front-runner in our books) and a transeasonal fixture about to enter every style-conscious shopper’s wardrobe. Rachel Zoe’s maternity style

Only celeb stylist Rachel Zoe would consider five inch thigh-high boots appropriate maternity wear but gosh, doesn’t she do it well? Attending a Pre-Oscars party in LA last weekend, the mum-to-be wore head-to-toe black.   Since LA is experiencing some of it’s coldest days since the 1940s at the moment (no, we’re not in the least bit smug!), Rachel wrapped up in a huge shaggy fur coat. The outfit underneath was very simple – skinny jeans and a black tunic – but it’s her uber chic accessorising that takes the look from drab to directional. Adding her trademark oversized glasses and a bang on trend Seventies floppy hat, Zoe’s outfit was a far cry from the average Mothercare mum attire. What do you think of Rachel Zoe’s look? Is she a slummy or yummy Mummy? [poll id=”46″]

Rachel Zoe is “emotionally attached” to styling. The celebrity fashion consultant – who is famed for dressing Hollywood stars including Nicole Richie, Cameron Diaz and Eva Mendes – loves the adrenaline rush she gets when she finds a client the perfect outfit. I have a huge emotional attachment to what I do. It’s what made me what I am.”

Rachel Zoe Vs Anna Wintour

Stylist Rachel Zoe got more than she bargained for after making an honest comment about the lack of Vogue’s influence in today’s celebrity obsessed society. After speaking to the NY Times Zoe was quoted as saying, “Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say that I’m more influential…….As great as it is, Vogue won’t change a designer’s business. But if an unknown brand is worn by a certain person in a tabloid, it will be the biggest designer within a week.” Naturally her comments were branded controversial, I mean no one insults Anna Wintour right? Well according to Page Six, Zoe has subsequently been dropped by her management agency, Magnet and speculations as to whether Ms Wintour had anything to do with her being dumped, are rife. If the rumours are true then it is possible that Vogue may or may not hold as much power anymore but it’s certain that Wintour is still as powerful as ever. Ah well….as a friend always says to me, “It’s easier to take back a million pounds that were stole than a couple of words you gave away.

With a long list of celebrity clients including Kate Hudson, Mischa Barton, Enrique Iglesias and Salma Hayek, Zoe commands up to approx. $6000 a day for her work and is notably more fashion obsessed than most. Her look is very glam boho, (think 1970’s, Kate Moss and Tom Ford), and in response to her critics who claim she’s simply creating clones of herself, Zoe says, “I’m not trying to make people look like me. But when you spend a lot of time with someone, you rub off on each other. I think I’m kind of an older sister to Lindsay and Nicole.”

Interviews: Celebrity Stylist, Zoe Lem

In the world of fashion, Zoe Lem does it all. Whether it’s styling the stars for the red carpet and participants on the UK version of “What Not to Wear, or flying off to the Middle East to work with the English language version of the Al-Jazeera news network, she’s been there, done that, and with a certain je ne sais quoi. Lem trained as a designer before deciding to focus on styling, and now her work can be seen on A-list celebs, magazine covers, music videos, and a myriad of other places. So, the favourite question to ask stylists and designers: who would you consider to be your biggest influences? That really is a difficult one to give a one word answer, I am very inspired by vintage clothing and the 20’s through to 50’s there was such beautiful style. If it’s who rather than what, then there is no one person. But my mother was really so into clothing growing up, even now her favorite shop is Topshop and she has a very funky style. I was brought up on charity shops, markets and finding great bargains in unusual places, a long while before it was cool to go for second hand chic!

How to Set Up a Vintage Clothing Store Online

Vintage clothing has always been popular with a small segment of the population. However, website Vintage-frills states that when top Hollywood stars like Sienna Miller and Ashley Olsen started wearing vintage clothing, the trend truly went global. The street-style was quickly adapted by stars all over the world and it even showed up on the fashion catwalks of Paris and Milan. But it’s been a while now and the style is being adapted and modified and there is still a demand for high-quality but beautiful vintage clothing from any era. Most buyers tend to frequent eBay, which has a huge group devoted to vintage clothing; buying, selling and repairs. The niche fashion is still in demand with Hollywood stylists like Rachel Zoe, Elizabeth Stewart, Petra Flannery, etc. still heavily invested in the field for vintage gowns, tops and accessories. As a result, small business website Chron states that starting an online vintage clothing store seems like a good idea. You can source materials from several places and list them online on a website for resale. Before you start though, here are a few tips on how to start a fashion line with vintage clothing. Tip #1 – Research vintage clothing as much as possible. For example, most stylists prefer top designers from the 50s and the 60s for their unique evening gowns and cocktail dresses. However, during the same time, there were several small designers too that were creating wonderful, high quality clothing. However, you will have to research the era you are interested in, and learn as much as possible about the designers, and styles of the era before you can actually start shopping. Tip # 2 – Pricing is probably the most important part of any business. One very important area to focus on is value. Vintage clothing […]

Isla Fisher apparently gets Jennifer Lawrence’s red carpet cast-offs…

Here’s a nice little insight into the celeb/fashion hierarchy… Sacha Baron Cohen’s sexy wife Isla Fisher has spoken out about what goes on behind-the-scenes in preparation of those big red carpet events, and apparently – as gorgeous as she looks – she doesn’t actually get first dibs on the dresses! “I have a stylist (Rachel Zoe) who styles Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway and whoever else,” she said. “They get all the dresses first, and then whatever they refuse – there are few, since they hang on to all the dresses until the very end – the couple left to choose that no one wants, I get that rack. “Usually it is the first dress that I try on that wins because I’m always in a rush. I’m happy to wear anything. When you look at my red carpet fashion choices, I’m always staying within my comfort zone – which is the opposite attitude I have to taking a role.’ We’d never have thought that Isla Fisher’s outfits are someone else’s cast-offs anyway – she’s an expert at rocking it on the red carpet and owning whatever dress she has on!
