Vera Wang is getting some serious competition in the wedding dress market, as Dutch designing duo Viktor and Rolf have just unveiled their debut bridal range as part of their pre-spring/summer 2014 collection. “We’ve always loved designing bridal wear because a wedding dress is a garment with a lot of meaning and emotions attached to it,” the designers told Vogue. “The wedding dress is the ultimate clothing icon.” No arguments there. However, akin to Viktor and Rolf’s other collections, their six-piece bridal range is unconventional and diverse, to say the least. There’s definitely something in there for everyone though – there’s a traditional dress (pictured above) but also a wedding jumpsuit, a mini wedding dress and even a simplistic mullet dress. Viktor and Rolf to make Haute Couture comeback!

Exciting times ahead for Viktor and Rolf. It’s been reported that the Dutch designer duo will be making a very welcome return to Haute Couture, as the House of Viktor and Rolf has officially been listed as a Correspondent Member in the Haute Couture schedule. They join the likes of Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Elie Saab, Armani and Versace in the prestigious category. The boys will be staging their first Haute Couture show of 13 years in Paris this July, so we haven’t got long to wait to see what they have up their sleeve. An Oscar-winning actress such as Anne Hathaway is used to diversity and versatility on screen, and it looks like she uses the aforementioned diversity and versatility on the red carpet, too. Sure Anne loves an elegant gown or an ultra-feminine dress, but she isn’t afraid to toughen up either (remember her blonde, punk inspired Valentino look at last year’s Met Gala?) or go for something on the more androgynous side. Paris Fashion Week AW13 highlights from John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and more

It was quite an action-packed weekend in the French Capital, with a host of celebs, editors, and big-name fashionistas filling the front rows of some of the hottest shows on the Fashion Month calendar. Some of the collections shown over the last few days included ones from Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Givenchy, Viktor & Rolf and Jean Paul Gaultier to name but a few. Viktor and Rolf embraced that monochrome trend we love so much, while Riccardo Tisci presented a stunningly intricate Givenchy collection with subtle punk infusions, with our fashion-favourite tartan print making an appearance on the catwalk too! AW11 Trend Recap: Arresting Jewel Tones & Spellbinding Prints and Patterns

Jewel Tones Deeply exotic gemstone hues replace last season’s bold fixation. Christopher Kane neon’s; seriously citrus and cerise hues and intense colour blocking have matured into glamorous, deep set jewel tones. With an emphasis on unadulterated opulence, varying textures beautifully contrasted in emerald at Emilio Pucci and Diane Von Furstenberg. Garnet garnered serious attention at Celine and Marc Jacobs, whilst citrine set the scene for the months ahead at Bottega Veneta and Valentino. Judging by this palette, it’s unsurprising then that the perennial LBD may just be sidelined in favour of its mystery evoking, colourful counterpart. Print & Pattern If you thought Prada and Stella McCartney’s madcap prints were the ghosts of season past, think again. Prints continued their haunting this season, minus the monkey business. The autumn/winter catwalks painted a sumptuous display of ornate artistry and a nod to ceramics, as designers took inspiration from precious objects of art. With an leaning towards wearable luxury – a continuing theme this season – swirls, motifs and tapestry-infused prints took centre stage at Etro, Mary Katrantzou and Viktor & Rolf, with a rather grown-up take on an unusual favourite: spots, as played out at Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs.  Last season’s ditsy florals have bloomed and are even more impactful as seen at Paul Smith and Jil Sander. The key to this trend: be as decorative as you dare.

Love or Hate? Viktor & Rolf AW11

Sometimes, especially as spring approaches, we might be tempted by a little tan. And sometimes, when we’re sick of being really good, we like to be a little bit cheeky. But never, not even at Halloween, do we like to look like we’ve been spawned from a sun-burnt devil. But it would seem Viktor & Rolf would like us to embrace a look that’s part sunbed scare, part devil defiance next season – and we for one aren’t buying it. A structured fan-pleated coat? Well, if you remove the umbrellas from the shoulder we’ll take its fierce tailoring any day. But you want us to wear a zipped polo and dip-dye our faces red? Come on. Apparently the “blank canvasing” is a ploy to get us looking closer at the impeccable tailoring, but we’re all too consumed by the fact this model looks about ready to explode, whether by means of over-heating, anger, spontaneous combustion or all three. We do, however, totally expect Lady Gaga to rock this check-me-I’m-a-cool-angel-with-a-sharp-structured-white-coat- but-look-I’m-also-a-devil-with-dark-eyes-and-a-red-face-too look on a stage near you very soon. Suffice to say we’re not heading for a spray tan any time soon, but we might throw on Angels & Demons this afternoon for good measure. H&M to team up with Viktor & Rolf

After the success of H&M’s collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney, the high street fashion retailer has announced it will be teaming up with Dutch design duo Viktor and Rolf to produce a collection for Autumn/Winter 2006. Of the venture, Viktor & Rolf said, “If haute couture is the most sublime form of fashion, then H&M is fashion at its most democratic. Our roots are based in couture. It’s the heart and soul of our work. But we also love to play with opposites: Transformation is a key element of our signature style,” H&M must have high hopes for the collection after reporting total growth in sales of only 9 per cent compared to a previous 15 per cent. Aside from poor sales it’s also lost its position as Europe’s largest clothes retailer to Spanish fashion group, Inditex. (owners of Zara)

Here’s a bit of reverse sexism this morning… In a world where men are traditionally paid more than women for the very same job, it’s quite refreshing to know that it’s the total opposite in the modelling world. Sean O’Pry, the Atlanta-born hottie above who has modelled for the likes of Viktor and Rolf, Giorgio Armani, and Versace among other big brands, has been named as the highest earning male model in the world. (Our very own Brit David Gandy secured the second spot – something we feel he should be very proud of!) Sean’s earnings for the past year amounted to $1.4 million – a pretty impressive sum we think you’ll agree. However, it’s quite miniscule when compared to the whopping $42 million Gisele Bundchen – the highest paid female model – earns. Paris Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 3

It was a busy weekend for the Parisian fashionistas, as Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano were among the spring/summer 2013  collections which debuted on the French runways. We already saw Raf Simons present his debut collection for Christian Dior a few months ago during Couture Fashion Week, but we were still looking forward to seeing what direction he would take his first ready-to-wear line in. As a whole, it was contemporary and modern, but it was minimalistic. The subtle but very apparent hint of romanticism wasn’t lost in the new-season collection either, which just goes to show that Raf Simons has done his homework. We’re impressed! You can always expect a good gimmick from a Vivienne Westwood show, and the latest outing was no exception. The models essentially channelled Marie Antoinette with their hair and outfits, while some of them walked out with hearts on their faces – obviously the designer was keen to show and spread the love. Quite cute really! Jean Paul Gaultier collections are always a highlight, and once again the designer sought inspiration from famous faces. It was all about the late Amy Winehouse for the Couture show back in January, but this time round JPG paid tribute to more than one musical icon by presenting looks inspired by David Bowie, Boy George, Madonna and the legendary Michael Jackson. We imagine the catwalk show in itself would have been quite spectacular and the atmosphere somewhat electric. It’s that time of year again when the longest red carpet in Hollywood plays host to the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, and in case you missed our live coverage last night, we’re here to round up the front-running designer frocks and the what-were-you-thinking disasters. From statement scarlet red and rich emerald green to romantic peaches and nudes, take a look at our pick of best dressed celebs that wowed at the Beverly Hilton last night… Leading the way in the sartorial stakes was Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks (above) who looked positively stunning in a scarlet silk crepe floor length Romona Keveza gown – who said red heads can’t wear red? Magic in Paris….

Who said modelling was easy? It most definitely wasn’t at the Viktor and Rolf show during Paris fashion week. To the horror of the fashion pack, the design duo sent their models uncomfortably tip toeing down the catwalk in clogs with massive spotlights on scaffolding along with sound systems attached to their backs. As far as concepts go – to make each model a self contained fashion show – it was an interesting one which I’m sure could have been communicated via less dangerous and demanding methods. As far as fashion weeks go, Paris was my favourite this season for three reasons, Christian Dior, Hussein Chalayan and Sonia Rykiel. Watch the Dior show below. When Katy Perry drastically went from sporting candyfloss pink locks to a bright blue Marge Simpson-esque barnet, we knew blue would hit the roof. And it appears to have done just that, in Katy’s world anyway. Spotted at the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Parislast week, the Teenage Dream singer graced front row in a cobalt blue creation from the designers’ spring/suumer 2012 collection. This week’s Rate or Slate is a real corker, because we love it when celebrities really step out of their style comfort zones and embrace the unexpected. First up, taking a brazen fashion stance – something she is more than partial to – is Katy Perry. Attending the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Paris, Katy ensured her popping blue hair colour matched her outfit, as she donned a black shift dress and contrasting cobalt blue coat from the design duos spring summer 2012 collection. Devil Wears Prada actress, Emily Blunt, opted for a Naeem Khan fall 2012 number at the LA premiere of her latest movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Usually seen in form-fitting red-carpet dresses, this was definitely a silhouette detour for Emily. DJ, model and muse Leigh Lezark brightened up a dull, grey, wet Paris fashion week morning by sporting a standout, canary yellow Sonia Rykiel suit to the designer’s fall 2012 show; a brave colour choice by the standards of someone who is almost always seen in black. Paris Fashion Week: Day 5

Let’s get down on our knees and praise Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier for the gorgeous display of colour that has been lacking in many designer collections this season. It wasn’t all hugs and rainbows though; much of Vivienne’s collection was influenced by those good old historic times (Elizabethan and Edwardian in particular) that Ms Westwood draws a lot of her inspiration from, making it another wonderfully British collection. And kudos to the model who rode a bicycle down the catwalk! Over at Jean Paul Gaultier, in amongst the bright and colourful ensembles, was an abundance of fur, knits and puffer jackets. And it looks like he went for a less controversial theme this season round. If you cast your minds back to just a few months ago, his Couture collection was heavily influenced by the late Amy Winehouse, which may have been loved by some (us, included) but wasn’t well received by his muse’s family. We felt that Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garcons presentation was one of the most surreal shows we have seen this autumn/winter 2012 season, as the models came out looking almost cartoon-like in their stiff multi-dimensional dresses and lego-esque hair. Now that John Galliano’s former intern Haider Ackermann’s name has been thrown into the Dior creative director equation, his latest collection is probably his most important yet. Luckily for him, he did a marvelous job, presenting a collection that he said was inspired by the colour of autumn leaves. We loved the layering and the styling as a whole, too; we honestly can’t fault it! Before you read the title and assume the royal marriage is now defunct, read on. Kate is still very much married to Britain’s most eligible bachelor and she still has to curtsey before the woman with a penchant for pastels and lady like handbags: Queenie. But the woman: our future- squeakily clean and perfect dimple sporting – queen has recently come into the spotlight for matters other than her immaculate Reiss and Whistles ensembles. Simultaneous firing from the fashion gentry, criticising Kate’s elevated style status, overindulged eyeliner and ‘thrifty’ trait has been interesting. See, in fashion, it is believed some people have the ‘right’ to comment and reflect, while others should silence their opinions for lack of a Vogue subscription. In my opinion: Kate Middleton is good at being as normal as they get. ‘They’ being the girls, who shop in local supermarkets, wear the same dress on more than one occasion and even agree to wear silly hats to match their husbands – who in Kate’s case just happens to be a prince. That’s all. If anything, there is a heightened need for Kate to maintain normality when reflecting on the haunting past of her late mother-in-law. In an interview with Sunday Times magazine, fashion veteran Vivienne Westwood spoke of her disagreement with Kate’s heavily kohl-rimmed eyes. Among the 2 billion people watching the royal wedding on Friday was a surprising amount of leading designers, who tuned in to discover Kate Middleton’s dress had indeed been designed by Sarah Burton on behalf of the house of McQueen. With a lot of love going around for the already-iconic creation, a very fashionable jury have given their verdict on Kate’s dress – Karl Lagerfeld called it “very pretty”, Valentino loved it, and Donatella Versace thought she looked beautiful – with a triumphant applause, save for Vera Wang who “would have preferred a closed neckline” and Elie Saab who “would have liked it even more with a little extra volume and longer train.” Here’s what the fashion heavyweights had to say about Kate’s dress… Karl Lagerfeld: “She is very elegant. The dress is classic and goes very well in the Westminster decor. It almost reminds me of (Queen) Elizabeth’s wedding, the royal weddings in the Fifties. The proportion of the train is good. The lace is very pretty. I like the veil a lot.” Vera Wang: “This was great for Sarah Burton, and whether it was intentional or accidental, everything worked. We thought Malcolm McLaren’s planned Christian Dior The Musical was a little out there. But it turns out he was just ahead of the designer all singing all dancing game. For it has been announced that Yves Saint Laurent’s life will be set to music. Singer Alain Chamfort and songwriter Pierre-Dominique Burgaud are working on the score and the musical shall focus on Saint Laurent’s rise to fashion fame. The musical will open with his work at Christian Dior and follow the highs and lows of Yves Saint Laurent’s career.

Remember back in 2004 when it was Karl Lagerfeld for H&M? At the time the concept was almost revolutionary and many a fashionista went crazy for the idea of combining high and low fashion. Although afterwards Lagerfeld accused H&M of snobbery due to the fact that the Swedish retailer only created limited quantities of the collection that hasn’t stopped other designers from following in his footsteps and we’ve since seen Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf create successful lines for the high street store. And so we wait with baited breath for Roberto Cavalli at H&M and boy have they teased us with leaked pictures and sneak previews. Time to take a break….

So there have been a few changes around My Fashion Life this year including a complete site re-design thanks to sycamore solutions and hopefully there will a lot more in 2007! I’ve often shied away from being personal in this blog, so this really is an overdue personal post. In my three soon to be four years of blogging I’d say this year has been the most demanding. Juggling the regular updates with increasing work commitments is often tricky but this summer had to be the most difficult. Updates were very infrequent, but yet you guys still stayed patient and loyal with My Fashion Life, so a massive THANK YOU, your love especially through your emails and comments is much appreciated. And so I am now officially on holiday! Will be back on the 3rd of January with a lot more fashion goodies.
