Viktor and Rolf debut bridal collection!

Vera Wang is getting some serious competition in the wedding dress market, as Dutch designing duo Viktor and Rolf have just unveiled their debut bridal range as part of their pre-spring/summer 2014 collection. “We’ve always loved designing bridal wear because a wedding dress is a garment with a lot of meaning and emotions attached to it,” the designers told Vogue. “The wedding dress is the ultimate clothing icon.” No arguments there. However, akin to Viktor and Rolf’s other collections, their six-piece bridal range is unconventional and diverse, to say the least. There’s definitely something in there for everyone though – there’s a traditional dress (pictured above) but also a wedding jumpsuit, a mini wedding dress and even a simplistic mullet dress. So if you’re looking for a dress with a difference, we think you’ve found it! [Image]

Viktor and Rolf to make Haute Couture comeback!

Exciting times ahead for Viktor and Rolf. It’s been reported that the Dutch designer duo will be making a very welcome return to Haute Couture, as the House of Viktor and Rolf has officially been listed as a Correspondent Member in the Haute Couture schedule. They join the likes of Valentino, Giambattista Valli, Elie Saab, Armani and Versace in the prestigious category. The boys will be staging their first Haute Couture show of 13 years in Paris this July, so we haven’t got long to wait to see what they have up their sleeve. Viktor and Rolf shows are never boring though so it looks like we are going to be in for a real treat as far as both the actual collection and the show itself are concerned. [Telegraph]

Doll Face: Viktor and Rolf Retrospective

Little girls dressing up their dolls is supreme training for a lifetime of dressing up themselves; some things never change and little girls will always be made of sugar and spice. Working in a nursery a few summers ago, I may not have had an inherent talent for childcare but, boy, could I style those dolls. The real little girls didn’t stand a chance. Between this ingrained relationship and all the doll-like fashion, beauty and models that have reigned over the catwalk of late, I have been waiting for someone to create something innovative in this realm. Well, of course, I should have known to rely on avant-garde fantasists supreme

Anne Hathaway suits up in Viktor & Rolf

An Oscar-winning actress such as Anne Hathaway is used to diversity and versatility on screen, and it looks like she uses the aforementioned diversity and versatility on the red carpet, too. Sure Anne loves an elegant gown or an ultra-feminine dress, but she isn’t afraid to toughen up either (remember her blonde, punk inspired Valentino look at last year’s Met Gala?) or go for something on the more androgynous side. Although Anne is wearing a tailored Viktor and Rolf suit from the duo’s spring/simmer 2014 collection, there’s nothing manly about it; in fact she looks softs and feminine thanks to her pointy heel, subtle make-up and side swept hair. The detailing on the jacket helps girl-ify the outfit too, making this another red carpet style triumph! Miranda Priestly would be so proud!

Gold and Silver Accessories For The Most Glam Time Of Year

In the fashion world, you’ve barely entered one season before you’re looking ahead to the next. That’s why it’s best to nail spring fashion this Christmas, so you can be ahead of the game by the time we’re looking towards summer! Here are some great gold and silver accessories that you can wear throughout the festive season: Medusa Necklace In Greek mythology, Medusa had the ability to turn anyone who looked directly at her to stone. Pretty useful ability, but this silver statement from Versace comes with no such caveats. We love the legendary look of the chain and gorgon head. Become a Grecian Goddess today! Safety Pin Earring Looks a little painful, but this earring from Viktor & Rolf’s the perfect addition to any rebel girl’s wardrobe. Match with silver studded shirts to complete the look. It’ll definitely get you noticed, if nothing else. Feather Choker This beautiful, winged statement accessory is from Balenciaga and seems to follow the mythological theme. It looks absolutely gorgeous with an off-the-shoulder top or dress, which shows off its stunning detail. Coil Necklace This reminds us of a Celtic torc (we’re sensing a pattern with this year’s accessories). Thanks Altuzarra for providing us with this lovely piece. Match gold accessories with a red lip and a white tunic this year for a timeless, glam Roman ensemble. Silver Envelope Clutch This clutch from Herve Leger will go superbly with a glitzy silver occasion dress this year, whether that’s for the Christmas office party or New Years’ Eve. It’s large enough to keep all your valuables together, without being too heavy and unwieldy. All you need is a set of pearl necklaces to complete the look. Gold on Gold You need a good pair of shades, even in winter. Seriously, that snow glare when the […]

Paris Fashion Week AW13 highlights from John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy and more

It was quite an action-packed weekend in the French Capital, with a host of celebs, editors, and big-name fashionistas filling the front rows of some of the hottest shows on the Fashion Month calendar. Some of the collections shown over the last few days included ones from Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Givenchy, Viktor & Rolf and Jean Paul Gaultier to name but a few. Viktor and Rolf embraced that monochrome trend we love so much, while Riccardo Tisci presented a stunningly intricate Givenchy collection with subtle punk infusions, with our fashion-favourite tartan print making an appearance on the catwalk too! And Givenchy wasn’t the only show to reference the 80s punk revolution – Jean Paul Gaultier also drew punk rock inspiration – particularly with the styling thanks to those wigs – and also with the abundance of leather and edgy printed pieces. Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender get steamy for W

W magazine has definitely turned up the heat for its August issue, as Charlize Theron and her Prometheus co-star Michael Fassbender are getting pretty steamy on the front cover. Charlize is sporting a plunging, dangerously smouldering black Christian Dior dress, while Michael is rocking the Viktor and Rolf and a seriously sexy pout. We could stare into his eyes all morning… We love everything about this cover, from the choice of stars, to the background, to the relatively minimal headlines to the actual content we could potentially be getting from aforementioned headlines. The lazy girl’s guide to a better body? Yes please! Standout shoes? Er… of course! We have every faith that the editorial pics are just as stunning as the cover; Charlize rarely disappoints when it comes to fashion shoots so we doubt this will be any different. Will you be picking up the August issue of W?

AW11 Trend Recap: Arresting Jewel Tones & Spellbinding Prints and Patterns

Jewel Tones Deeply exotic gemstone hues replace last season’s bold fixation. Christopher Kane neon’s; seriously citrus and cerise hues and intense colour blocking have matured into glamorous, deep set jewel tones. With an emphasis on unadulterated opulence, varying textures beautifully contrasted in emerald at Emilio Pucci and Diane Von Furstenberg. Garnet garnered serious attention at Celine and Marc Jacobs, whilst citrine set the scene for the months ahead at Bottega Veneta and Valentino. Judging by this palette, it’s unsurprising then that the perennial LBD may just be sidelined in favour of its mystery evoking, colourful counterpart. Print & Pattern If you thought Prada and Stella McCartney’s madcap prints were the ghosts of season past, think again. Prints continued their haunting this season, minus the monkey business. The autumn/winter catwalks painted a sumptuous display of ornate artistry and a nod to ceramics, as designers took inspiration from precious objects of art. With an leaning towards wearable luxury – a continuing theme this season – swirls, motifs and tapestry-infused prints took centre stage at Etro, Mary Katrantzou and Viktor & Rolf, with a rather grown-up take on an unusual favourite: spots, as played out at Stella McCartney and Marc Jacobs.  Last season’s ditsy florals have bloomed and are even more impactful as seen at Paul Smith and Jil Sander. The key to this trend: be as decorative as you dare.

Love or Hate? Viktor & Rolf AW11

Sometimes, especially as spring approaches, we might be tempted by a little tan. And sometimes, when we’re sick of being really good, we like to be a little bit cheeky. But never, not even at Halloween, do we like to look like we’ve been spawned from a sun-burnt devil. But it would seem Viktor & Rolf would like us to embrace a look that’s part sunbed scare, part devil defiance next season – and we for one aren’t buying it. A structured fan-pleated coat? Well, if you remove the umbrellas from the shoulder we’ll take its fierce tailoring any day. But you want us to wear a zipped polo and dip-dye our faces red? Come on. Apparently the “blank canvasing” is a ploy to get us looking closer at the impeccable tailoring, but we’re all too consumed by the fact this model looks about ready to explode, whether by means of over-heating, anger, spontaneous combustion or all three. We do, however, totally expect Lady Gaga to rock this check-me-I’m-a-cool-angel-with-a-sharp-structured-white-coat- but-look-I’m-also-a-devil-with-dark-eyes-and-a-red-face-too look on a stage near you very soon. Suffice to say we’re not heading for a spray tan any time soon, but we might throw on Angels & Demons this afternoon for good measure. What do you think of this look from Viktor & Rolf’s autumn/winter 2011 collection? Do you think it’s an arty statement or just plain pretentious? Let us know your thoughts below. [poll id=”50″]

Paris Fashion Week: Viktor & Rolf AW09

One of the highlights of last year was the Viktor and Rolf exhibition. It was a magical walk through the story of their designs and told rather wonderfully through giant dolls. Well this Autumn/Winter 09 show continued their flair for the creative and sent down models painted as white as porcelain dolls in clothes that were startlingly beautiful.

Dita Von Teese and Wonderbra: A Match Made in Heaven

I’ve been biting my nails in excitement ever since Wonderbra, the lingerie brand responsible for giving many of us our first cleavages, announced that they were to team up with Dita Von Teese for their next range of lingerie. I mean, what a pairing! Two things haven’t gone more perfectly together since Viktor and Rolf, Dolce and Gabbana, strawberries and cream…

H&M to team up with Viktor & Rolf

After the success of H&M’s collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney, the high street fashion retailer has announced it will be teaming up with Dutch design duo Viktor and Rolf to produce a collection for Autumn/Winter 2006. Of the venture, Viktor & Rolf said, “If haute couture is the most sublime form of fashion, then H&M is fashion at its most democratic. Our roots are based in couture. It’s the heart and soul of our work. But we also love to play with opposites: Transformation is a key element of our signature style,” H&M must have high hopes for the collection after reporting total growth in sales of only 9 per cent compared to a previous 15 per cent. Aside from poor sales it’s also lost its position as Europe’s largest clothes retailer to Spanish fashion group, Inditex. (owners of Zara)

Your must-haves for spring 2014

Fashion month seems like such a long time ago, so we know that the trends presented on the spring/summer 2014 catwalks might not instantly come into your heads under pressure. You don’t need to trawl through the New York, London, Milan, and Paris archives to remind yourselves what to look out for in the shops and online when updating your wardrobes though… there are only eight pieces you need to guarantee a stylish spring. Here are your must-haves for the spring season: 1. A white shirt is a wardrobe staple whatever the season, but it’s practically a necessity for the upcoming spring/summer season – just ask Preen and Viktor and Rolf, among others. You can go plain for max versatility, but we can’t resist the embellished collar on this beauty. Sister Jane embellished blouse, £45 2. A floral dress in spring? Pretty much a given but there’s a reason floral dresses are the perfect springtime attire – you can’t go wrong with a standard floral dress. Layers of clothing and jewellery are heartily encouraged! New Look floral skater dress, £13 3. Wedges have been the answer to many a sartorial footwear question over the years, and we think these cork wedges have it all – height, comfort, versatility – add to shopping cart! Michael Kors Jolie beige suede cork wedges, £155 4. We were delighted when we saw full skirts on the latest Dior and Roksanda Ilincic catwalks – what’s not to love about this glamorous, voluminous and ultra feminine trend? A bright, bold full skirt will serve you well this spring! Coast Aralynn skirt, £115 5. Pastel is back with a vengeance this spring/summer season; make sure you’re getting in on the trend with some comfy yet chic pastel jeans. Perfect to dress up or down! Blumarine pastel pink […]

Forbes names highest earning male model!

Here’s a bit of reverse sexism this morning… In a world where men are traditionally paid more than women for the very same job, it’s quite refreshing to know that it’s the total opposite in the modelling world. Sean O’Pry, the Atlanta-born hottie above who has modelled for the likes of Viktor and Rolf, Giorgio Armani, and Versace among other big brands, has been named as the highest earning male model in the world. (Our very own Brit David Gandy secured the second spot – something we feel he should be very proud of!) Sean’s earnings for the past year amounted to $1.4 million – a pretty impressive sum we think you’ll agree. However, it’s quite miniscule when compared to the whopping $42 million Gisele Bundchen – the highest paid female model – earns. Do we think male models should make the same as their female counterparts? [Forbes]

Jessica Alba dishes business tips in Glamour UK May

Fashion glossies can never go wrong with putting Jessica Alba on their front cover – especially when she looks as gorgeous as she does on the front of Glamour UK’s May issue. We do kind of wish the background colour wasn’t so bold and harsh though as it distracts us from the beauty of Jess’s dress – not to mention her beauty in general. The actress and businesswoman was photographed by Simon Emmett and styled by Charlotte-Anne Fidler, and shares her tips for success with Glamour’s readers. Additionally, she can be seen modelling a host of lust-worthy fashionable pieces in the editorial, from big-name designers such as Viktor and Rolf, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and Valentino among others. Although, the Martin Grant playsuit she is rocking in the picture below has to be our favourite! (Plus look how chuffed she looks while wearing it!) You can get the May issue of Glamour for your iPad and Kindle from today! What are you waiting for? [Images]

Paris Fashion Week SS13 highlights – Part 3

It was a busy weekend for the Parisian fashionistas, as Vivienne Westwood, Christian Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galliano were among the spring/summer 2013  collections which debuted on the French runways. We already saw Raf Simons present his debut collection for Christian Dior a few months ago during Couture Fashion Week, but we were still looking forward to seeing what direction he would take his first ready-to-wear line in. As a whole, it was contemporary and modern, but it was minimalistic. The subtle but very apparent hint of romanticism wasn’t lost in the new-season collection either, which just goes to show that Raf Simons has done his homework. We’re impressed! You can always expect a good gimmick from a Vivienne Westwood show, and the latest outing was no exception. The models essentially channelled Marie Antoinette with their hair and outfits, while some of them walked out with hearts on their faces – obviously the designer was keen to show and spread the love. Quite cute really! Jean Paul Gaultier collections are always a highlight, and once again the designer sought inspiration from famous faces. It was all about the late Amy Winehouse for the Couture show back in January, but this time round JPG paid tribute to more than one musical icon by presenting looks inspired by David Bowie, Boy George, Madonna and the legendary Michael Jackson. We imagine the catwalk show in itself would have been quite spectacular and the atmosphere somewhat electric. John Galliano was another hotly anticipated collection, as we were intrigued to find out what creative director Bill Gaytten was capable of doing now that he didn’t have Christian Dior to focus on as well. The collection definitely went in a different direction this season; gone was John Galliano’s love of theatrics, drama and all things attention-grabbing, […]

Golden Globes 2011: trend round-up

So we’ve given you the gossip as it happened and we’ve scrutinised the stars’ style to bring you the best and worst dressed – but that’s not all on our sartorial radar. This year’s 68th Golden Globes saw some serious red carpet trends, and as our favourite retailers rush to get their hands on the key pieces and recreations, we’re here to round them up and show you what to look out for in elegant eveningwear this season. Statement scarlett red With Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks and January Jones taking centre stage in statement scarlett gowns by Romona Keveza and Versace respectively, vivid, vibrant red made a va va voom visual on the matching coloured carpet. Emerald green This surprise stand-out trend of the night saw Angelina Jolie, Mila Kunis and Catherine Zeta Jones turn heads in rich emerald green. From Angie’s classic long-sleeved Atelier Versace to Mila’s one-shouldered Vera Wang, this jewel tone shone like no other on Sunday night. Romantic nudes Soft and ethereal, this year’s romantic nudes were a subtle elegance on the red carpet with Scarlett Johansson, Leighton Meester and Dame Helen Mirren all opting for subdued blush tones and second-skin shades. Pretty pinks This year’s Golden Globes played host to a wash of pretty pinks and sweet honeysuckles. From Megan Fox‘s pastel Armani Prive to lady of the night Natalie Portman‘s blush Viktor and Rolf gown, this look was all about celebrating girliness. Serious sparkle Whether on Olivia Wilde‘s frothy Marchesa ballgown or Anne Hathaway‘s figure-skimming Armani Prive piece, statement sparkle was head to toe in these all-or-nothing glittering gowns. Minimalist lines In stark contrast to the girls above, minimalism cut through the carpet as a serious style contender with the likes of Claire Danes, Nicole Kidman and Emma Stone opting for sleek, simple designs. Golden Globes 2011: best dressed

It’s that time of year again when the longest red carpet in Hollywood plays host to the 2011 Golden Globe Awards, and in case you missed our live coverage last night, we’re here to round up the front-running designer frocks and the what-were-you-thinking disasters. From statement scarlet red and rich emerald green to romantic peaches and nudes, take a look at our pick of best dressed celebs that wowed at the Beverly Hilton last night… Leading the way in the sartorial stakes was Mad Men actress Christina Hendricks (above) who looked positively stunning in a scarlet silk crepe floor length Romona Keveza gown – who said red heads can’t wear red? Next up, Black Swan actress Natalie Portman survived the pressure in an elegant Viktor and Rolf silk blush dress with a red sequinned floral embellishment and matching red accessories that we got to see in all the more details when she picked up her Best Actress Award. Angelina Jolie swapped her usual black on black look in favour of this long sleeved sequinned emerald green Versace gown – the power shoulders and scooped back complete with soft side-swept hair proved a huge hit for Angie. Following in the Versace suit was Mad Men actress January Jones (no surprise there), who pulled off flashing all that flesh in a cut-away floor-sweeping red fringed gown. Claire Danes led the way for spring style and opted for a neon pink Calvin Klein halterneck dress – it’s a hard cut to pull off, but the minimalist column cut and colour-popping pink saw this actress reach new sartorial heights (and pick up a Best Actress for TV Series Award). Dressed in a jaw-dropping figure hugging Giorgio Armani dress was actress Anne Hathaway, who too went for big shoulders, long sleeves and sequins on her […]

Five minutes with: Dolly Jones, editor of Vogue.com

If anyone knows about the ups and downs of working in online media it’s editor of Vogue.com, Dolly Jones. Under her direction she’s literally turned the site into fashion heaven – packed with videos and podcasts to keep us occupied…oh and enough street-chic to keep us inspired too! Always on the go, Dolly took a five-minute break to talk to us about fashion week, H&M collaborations, and British fashion. You’ve worked at Vogue.com for over nine years now, what’s the biggest change you’ve witnessed in online publishing since you first started? That people want us to feature them. When I started it was quite a challenge to persuade designers and models that they wanted to be associated with a phenomenon they didn’t understand – the internet was associated with internet geeks and porn addicts and not fashionable at all. What does a normal day for you consist of? Every day is different. It’s a luxury if I get to sit at my desk and get through my emails, I receive hundreds every day. I work with a brilliant editorial team these days and I love seeing all the ideas we come up with coming to fruition, whether it’s a film on VogueTV, a gallery of the seasonal trends from A to Z or an exclusive interview in the Daily News. I work with the commercial team to try to bring exciting and innovative clients onto the site and travel to Paris and Milan to cover the fashion shows as well as liaising with the magazine team to ensure our brand is where they want it to be. It’s a constant hamster wheel of meeting all the most exciting people in fashion to ensure we are on the pulse of what’s happening within the industry, both with the established global businesses […]

The recent sleuth of fashion weeks have revealed an unlikely new style icon: the clown

Magic in Paris….

Who said modelling was easy? It most definitely wasn’t at the Viktor and Rolf show during Paris fashion week. To the horror of the fashion pack, the design duo sent their models uncomfortably tip toeing down the catwalk in clogs with massive spotlights on scaffolding along with sound systems attached to their backs. As far as concepts go – to make each model a self contained fashion show – it was an interesting one which I’m sure could have been communicated via less dangerous and demanding methods. As far as fashion weeks go, Paris was my favourite this season for three reasons, Christian Dior, Hussein Chalayan and Sonia Rykiel. Watch the Dior show below. Big thanks to the youtube user who uploaded this. Amazing! Part 2 & Part 3 [Image:Elle]

MFL Most Wanted: Cobalt blue a la Katy Perry

When Katy Perry drastically went from sporting candyfloss pink locks to a bright blue Marge Simpson-esque barnet, we knew blue would hit the roof. And it appears to have done just that, in Katy’s world anyway. Spotted at the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Parislast week, the Teenage Dream singer graced front row in a cobalt blue creation from the designers’ spring/suumer 2012 collection. Katy made an envious sight in the deep oceanic hue, although verging on absolutely crazy – her blue-haired secretary-esque up do and the tidal wave embroidery on her dress and contrasting coat made the paps go wild – she kick started a bout of colour envy at My Fashion Life HQ, and now we want to douse everything in a striking shade of the colour. We won’t rattle on about the specifics of the blue a la Meryl Streep and the ‘cerulean’ rant in Devil Wears Prada. Instead we’ve selected the best cobalt blue pieces you can snap up right now. Rate or Slate: Katy Perry vs Emily Blunt vs Leigh Lezark

This week’s Rate or Slate is a real corker, because we love it when celebrities really step out of their style comfort zones and embrace the unexpected. First up, taking a brazen fashion stance – something she is more than partial to – is Katy Perry. Attending the Viktor & Rolf fall 2012 show in Paris, Katy ensured her popping blue hair colour matched her outfit, as she donned a black shift dress and contrasting cobalt blue coat from the design duos spring summer 2012 collection. Devil Wears Prada actress, Emily Blunt, opted for a Naeem Khan fall 2012 number at the LA premiere of her latest movie, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen. Usually seen in form-fitting red-carpet dresses, this was definitely a silhouette detour for Emily. DJ, model and muse Leigh Lezark brightened up a dull, grey, wet Paris fashion week morning by sporting a standout, canary yellow Sonia Rykiel suit to the designer’s fall 2012 show; a brave colour choice by the standards of someone who is almost always seen in black. It’s over to our Style Jury….  My Fashion Life News Ed says: Katy Perry: ‘You’ll hardly ever find me say anything negative about Katy Perry, and this time is no different. I would have lost the tights or worn my hair down as it looks a tad secretary chic (an uber stylish, gorgeous secretary, mind) but this is definitely my favourite. Gorgeous!’ Emily Blunt: ‘I think this dress totally drowned Emily, which is a shame because I usually love her red carpet style. If the hemline was shorter and she added some bold, flirty accessories, she could have got away with it but something isn’t right here. I don’t think the shoes help either.’ Leigh Lezark: ‘Kudos for going for something so bright and out of […]

Paris Fashion Week: Day 5

Let’s get down on our knees and praise Vivienne Westwood and Jean Paul Gaultier for the gorgeous display of colour that has been lacking in many designer collections this season. It wasn’t all hugs and rainbows though; much of Vivienne’s collection was influenced by those good old historic times (Elizabethan and Edwardian in particular) that Ms Westwood draws a lot of her inspiration from, making it another wonderfully British collection. And kudos to the model who rode a bicycle down the catwalk! Over at Jean Paul Gaultier, in amongst the bright and colourful ensembles, was an abundance of fur, knits and puffer jackets. And it looks like he went for a less controversial theme this season round. If you cast your minds back to just a few months ago, his Couture collection was heavily influenced by the late Amy Winehouse, which may have been loved by some (us, included) but wasn’t well received by his muse’s family. We felt that Rei Kawakubo’s Comme des Garcons presentation was one of the most surreal shows we have seen this autumn/winter 2012 season, as the models came out looking almost cartoon-like in their stiff multi-dimensional dresses and lego-esque hair. Now that John Galliano’s former intern Haider Ackermann’s name has been thrown into the Dior creative director equation, his latest collection is probably his most important yet. Luckily for him, he did a marvelous job, presenting a collection that he said was inspired by the colour of autumn leaves. We loved the layering and the styling as a whole, too; we honestly can’t fault it! Katy Perry was among the front-rowers at Viktor & Rolf which surprised us, seeing as there wasn’t a bubblegum or candy floss coloured garment in sight for the collection that was allegedly inspired by the moon. The colours may not have been to Katy’s […]

Vivienne Westwood knocks Kate Middleton off her throne

Before you read the title and assume the royal marriage is now defunct, read on. Kate is still very much married to Britain’s most eligible bachelor and she still has to curtsey before the woman with a penchant for pastels and lady like handbags: Queenie. But the woman: our future- squeakily clean and perfect dimple sporting – queen has recently come into the spotlight for matters other than her immaculate Reiss and Whistles ensembles. Simultaneous firing from the fashion gentry, criticising Kate’s elevated style status, overindulged eyeliner and ‘thrifty’ trait has been interesting. See, in fashion, it is believed some people have the ‘right’ to comment and reflect, while others should silence their opinions for lack of a Vogue subscription. In my opinion: Kate Middleton is good at being as normal as they get. ‘They’ being the girls, who shop in local supermarkets, wear the same dress on more than one occasion and even agree to wear silly hats to match their husbands – who in Kate’s case just happens to be a prince. That’s all. If anything, there is a heightened need for Kate to maintain normality when reflecting on the haunting past of her late mother-in-law. In an interview with Sunday Times magazine, fashion veteran Vivienne Westwood spoke of her disagreement with Kate’s heavily kohl-rimmed eyes. This followed on from the comments made by Dutch design duo, Viktor & Rolf, who pleaded with Kate to de-kohl in order to let her natural beauty shine though. A fair criticism, considering there have been times I have seen images of Kate with her eye makeup looking stark in comparison to her rosy complexion, but you have to applaud her confidence for going DIY with the makeup brushes – even on her wedding day! But it isn’t so much Kate’s makeup […]

The fashion verdict: designers react to Kate’s wedding dress

Among the 2 billion people watching the royal wedding on Friday was a surprising amount of leading designers, who tuned in to discover Kate Middleton’s dress had indeed been designed by Sarah Burton on behalf of the house of McQueen. With a lot of love going around for the already-iconic creation, a very fashionable jury have given their verdict on Kate’s dress – Karl Lagerfeld called it “very pretty”, Valentino loved it, and Donatella Versace thought she looked beautiful – with a triumphant applause, save for Vera Wang who “would have preferred a closed neckline” and Elie Saab who “would have liked it even more with a little extra volume and longer train.” Here’s what the fashion heavyweights had to say about Kate’s dress… Karl Lagerfeld: “She is very elegant. The dress is classic and goes very well in the Westminster decor. It almost reminds me of (Queen) Elizabeth’s wedding, the royal weddings in the Fifties. The proportion of the train is good. The lace is very pretty. I like the veil a lot.” Vera Wang: “This was great for Sarah Burton, and whether it was intentional or accidental, everything worked. It is amazing and wonderful for someone who does not usually do wedding dresses to show such restraint. The dress was cut beautifully, in a subdued way. I found the fitted lace bodice and the fairly large skirt, without tiers or technical draping, just right — a modern version of a tradition that will never be outdated. I would have preferred a closed neckline, however.” Prabal Gurung: “I thought it was pretty and appropriate. A high-profile wedding like this is not the place for making a crazy fashion moment. It sounds like an oxymoron but it was a personal moment in a very public place. The dress clearly said […]

H&M: Who did it best?

Remember back in 2004 when it was Karl Lagerfeld for H&M? At the time the concept was almost revolutionary and many a fashionista went crazy for the idea of combining high and low fashion. Although afterwards Lagerfeld accused H&M of snobbery due to the fact that the Swedish retailer only created limited quantities of the collection that hasn’t stopped other designers from following in his footsteps and we’ve since seen Stella McCartney and Viktor & Rolf create successful lines for the high street store. And so we wait with baited breath for Roberto Cavalli at H&M and boy have they teased us with leaked pictures and sneak previews. But to date which designer collaboration do you think has been H&M’s best so far? {democracy:7}
