Out with the old, in with the new

It would appear that the reign of the skinny jean may just be over; the time has come, once again, for the wide-legged jean. And it’s about time! Whilst I do love my skinny’s, the flare is a far more figure friendly way to wear denim. It was a harsh reality, but the skinny cut was best suited to those with longer, thinner legs as demonstrated by the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss. The Flare on the other hand looks great on more or less anyone, due to the loosely cut shape they make legs appear thinner, if you have shorter legs then by teaming them with platforms, another favourite for this season, you’ll look 6 ft tall!

Lets hope it doesnt catch on

My heart nearly stopped when a friend of mine sent the image above with the subject line How Long before its here? My response? NEVER! Apparently the Jeans Bikini Pant is a trend instigated by the Brazilians that is now infecting teen girls in Japan, which is a shame seeing as the Japanese are usually so on point when it comes to fashion. I seriously can’t see the appeal and this is one trend I do not wish to see on the high street. I only just about managed to survive the whole “thong showing above a pair of hipsters and don’t think my heart can take this travesty. And to think all it’d take for it to become a regular sighting on the streets would be for Kate Moss to be pictured in a pair which would promptly be added to her collection for Topshop…what is fashion coming to?

Head of the House

The slogan genius, that is Henry Holland, single-handedly bailed out the t-shirt from its painful few years in high security fashion prison, to deliver us a collection filled with satirical delights. Showing his notoriously famous t-shirts with Fashion East at London Fashion Week last week Monday, models sported t-shirts emblazoned with phrases such as ‘I’ll show you who’s boss Kate Moss’ and ‘Wham bam thank you Stam’ House of Holland t-shirts known for their witty, daring rhyming schemes challenge the imagination and are a far cry from the mundane ‘Team Jolie’ and ‘100% sexy’, making them a big hit! Lady Sovereign wears ‘Biggest midget in the game’, which was custom made for her and everybody’s favourite MySpace rapper, Marvellous Macc Mello, donned Holland’s ‘Cause me pain Heidi Slimane’ T-shirt back in November. Hype surrounding Holland T-shirts began when the Fashion Groupies collection was released last September. Designer Giles Deacon wore a ‘Uhu Gareth Pugh’ T-shirt at fashion week and Gareth Pugh returned the favour by wearing a ‘Get your freak on Giles Deacon’ at his catwalk show. Other slogans in the Fashion Groupies collection include “Do me daily Christopher Bailey’! House of Holland is available at houseofholland.co.uk

Darimeya…..Have you got yours?

Who knew that ‘happiness’ was but a click of a button away, or that it only cost £54…well, maybe a little more if you want ‘happiness’ in all available colours!! I wouldn’t have believed it myself had I had not witnessed the squeals of joy first hand as my flatmate finally managed to secure her purchase of the Darimeya, floral jersey tunic dress from asos.com, in both black and blue! As shown here on Kate Moss herself (in brown), this spectacular design, available in both short sleeve and jersey style, can be worn with pretty much anything. But if you want to get your hands on at least one of these dresses then you need to act fast and be prepared to go to all lengths necessary. Asos.com sold out in only minutes of displaying the Darimeya number, as have Topshop, so GOOD LUCK and GOD SPEED!

Victoria Beckham: Less is more!

As Victoria Beckham is carving a new career in the shape of a ‘professional style icon’, why is it that fashion writers and fashionistas alike are still asking why she continually gets it wrong? It’s certainly not the fault of the clothes – there was nothing wrong with the Giambattista Valli dress she sported some weeks ago, or the Louboutins she wears at every photo opportunity. She’s got the figure to carry off almost any style (though the measures she takes to achieve it are somewhat extreme) and she was some steps ahead of the pack with her gamine bob. So what is it about Posh that is working against all the good work? Few took her fashion book That Extra Half and Inchseriously, despite the fact that it was actually penned by esteemed Guardian fashion writer Hadley Freeman, and Grazia continue to critique almost every outfit with savage wit.

All will be revealed

Could this be one of the pieces from Kate’s new range for Topshop? It may just be possible as British Vogue seems to have bagged the rights to give us an exclusive sneak preview of the collection in their April issue, which of course features Kate on the cover. Only time will tell if the dress she’s posing in is actually from the line….on another note I hope they go for the cover on the left. [Image:Fadedyouth]

A Shift in Season

As hemlines continue to rise, the shift dress is finding it’s home as a wardrobe staple, replacing skinny jeans as our favourite garment. First revisited on the runway six months ago the sixties trend looks set to run and run, especially with the impending release of Factory Girl, the film about Edie Sedgewick that’s set to make Sienna Miller an even bigger star than she already is. Burberry’s sexy Spring/Summer 07 campaign by Mario Testino took inspiration from the 1960’s photography of Cecil Beaton, and saw Kate Moss leading the troupe of beautiful people dressed in cream and silver trapeze-shaped coats with oversize buttons.

Winter Sun Beach Chic

In preparation for my own escape to the sun this winter I have been searching London high and low in pursuit of the perfect holiday wardrobe – no mean feat whilst still in the depths of winter. Ever the fashionista I am, taking inspiration from the Spring/Summer 07 catwalks, coveting neon brights teamed with creamy caramels a-la-Christopher Kane, whilst shimmery pale gold and light-as-air chiffons will come into their own with a golden tan. Braving the changing room after a Christmas season of serious indulgence is never a pleasant task, so the shopping destinations need to be all the more special to ease the struggle. For pure ambiance and experience, I head to Notting Hill, where my favourites are top-end boutiques Heidi Klein and Pistol Panties. Pistol Panties bikinis never fail to make you feel and look like a fifties starlet , concealing and revealing in all the right places. The appropriately named ‘Kate’ style is top of my wishlist – the sparkly gold is very Princess Leia, especially when teamed with a Melissa Odabash kaftan from Heidi Klein. This one-stop holiday shop’s style is more pared-down beach chic, but the experience is no less spoiling. As well as a magnificent selection of bikinis by the likes of Missoni, the in-house beauty salon will buff manicure and tan you so that you’re well and truly ready for the sun. If you can’t make it to Notting Hill my best advice is to shop online where websites like www.figleaves.com have an infinite selection and www.Cocobay.co.uk has a free returns policy and stocks hip Aussie brands Seafolly and Moontide. For those on the other side of the Atlantic, www.shopbop.com is the only way to go – snap up a hot pink Diane Von Furstenburg Beach or printed Marc Jacobs bikini whilst they’re […]

Back to business…

Wow, hasn’t this holiday break gone by in a flash! It was quick, but relaxing, and I spent most of it, eating, drinking and getting my fashion fix from re-runs of Sex and the City. Oh how I do miss Carrie’s style…..many can criticise but she is and will always be a style icon in my eyes. And to another icon of style, Kate Moss, – whom I still think doesn’t beat Carrie in the style stakes – the New Year has only just begun and Moss is already stealing the headlines with her possible marriage to Pete Doherty. Apparently the two skinny jean lovers didn’t tie the knot but instead engaged in a Buddhist ceremony. Anyway back to business, as fashion week will soon be upon us, I thought I’d kick of with some dates for the big players Couture Week: 22nd , 25th January 2007 New York: 2nd , 9th February 2007 London: 12th -16th February 2007 Milan: 17th February – 25th February 2007 Paris: 25th February , 5th March 2007 In addition Glasgow will be holding their fashion week from the 28th March , 31st March 2007.

Sienna’s fashion statement

As obvious as this is, I didn’t actually see this one coming. Sienna Miller and her sister Savannah have announced that they will be launching their own fashion label, with a name inspired by Sienna’s birthday, “Twenty8Twelve. Anyone wishing to feel sceptical should know that the venture will most probably be a creative success if their fashion credentials are anything to go by. Sienna unlike the likes of Nicole Richie, does not hire or fire stylists as she styles herself, while Savannah is a graduate of Central Saint Martins who has lent her talents to Alexander McQueen, Betty Jackson and Matthew Williamson. The collection compiled of 80 pieces will be entitled “An Anthology of Rebellion and is inspired by “Dickensian London Quoted by Style.com, Sienna said of the partnership, “This isn’t about just lending a name to something and not really being involved.” Hmmm could she be having a dig at Kate Moss? Technology…fashions future.

Everyone at the moment seems to be speculating about fashion’s future with Time magazine suggesting the industry is in a “state of medical emergency” and rightly so. Fashion is undoubtly stagnant and stale and with the number of celebrity labels which have infiltrated the market it is no wonder that it has become solely about marketing, i.e Topshop and Kate Moss. Watching footage of Hussein Chalayan’s show at Paris fashion week Spring/Summer 07 showed and gave hope to all that there is a future and an interesting one at that. Not the first designer to mix technology into fashion, (there are others before such as Alexandra Fede.) However Chalayan communicated the idea that technology could play an important role effectively and successfully. Using technology to create movement with zippers, hemlines and sleeves and to transform structure. He’s connected the two industries at a time when we are all in desperate need of refreshing and new ideas. The relationship between fashion and technology got off to a slow start and I must say I doubted if it would work and whether consumers would be accepting of it. But I’m absolutely certain now that technology is fashion’s future. It’ll be exciting to see the different ways designers will incorporate technology into fashion to create style in their collections.

On off girlfriend Kate Moss summoned the musician to her home to tell him exactly what she thought of his irresponsible behaviour but couldn’t find the words and gave him a beating instead. Doherty said of his encounter with Moss…. “She was angry about the blood-spraying thing. She beat the crap out of me. She laid into me punching and kicking. “I’m alright, but she hurt my finger. I couldn’t do anything back, because she’s a girl.”

Marchesa’s Weinstein connection

Label Marchesa made up of design duo Georgina Chapman and Kerin Craig , seems to be causing a bit of a stir….. Only launched in April 2005 and they’ve already dressed some of the top names in the fashion industry such as Rene Zewellger, Claudia Schiffer, Penelope Cruz, Mischa Barton and Felicity Huffman. Rather than praise their success alot of industry insiders are mostly speculating, as Georgina Champan’s boyfriend is none other than Harvey Weinstein, the 53 yr old Hollywood mogul (founder of the film company Miramax) who is the boss of most of the women photographed in Marchesa. The success of the label has been attributed to Weinstein & Chapman’s romance, and many feel that Marchesa doesnt have much to offer, which is possibly true but a bit harsh. Hasnt it been said time and time again that in fashion its alot about “who you know”. Matthew Williamson uses his connections all the time, and has admitted in the past that his friendships with Kelis, Kate Moss, and others does count and he uses them to his advantage. There’s no doubt its an unfair industry at times, but if Marchesa are going to be criticized, then alot of other designers/labels should be also. [LA Times]

Fru Fru

Label Name: Fru Fru Created by: Sydney Sisters Cam and Amba Shepherd What was the first piece of clothing you ever made? wow that’s a real brain stretcher….. as Fru Fru it was a collection of very feminine girlie hand decorated & printed cotton tanks – sequins, lace, paint, soft and pretty. If you could make 3 changes to the fashion industry what would they be? 1) In Australia we would get the government to plough some money (or provide business incentives/ discourage importing) into Australian textile and manufacturing industry because it all going off shore now which means that making garments here is now STUPIDLY expensive. 2) We would develop retail cooperatives for young emerging designers to sell their wares direct to the public. 3) We would set up a taskforce to take all the retailers who order stock (on 30 day account) but then don’t pay, off to a big fat ugly jail cell (no make that a teeny squishy ugly one). What couldn’t you live without? Living near the beach. Whose style do you admire? Gwen Stefani & Kate Moss What will you be wearing this autumn/winter? Well its coming up to Summer here now so lots of bikinis and free flowing cotton tops because it gets so hot! Lots of turquoise, gold, spots, sparkles and stripes i think… Describe Fru Fru in 3 words….. Thoughtful, wacky, sweet! To celebrate, the Fashion and Textile Museum is proud to announce the forthcoming launch of an ambitious and comprehensive touring exhibition directed and curated by Terry Jones, the magazine’s founder, creative director and editor-in-chief. The exhibition will visit Paris, Tokyo, New York, Sao Paulo, Hong Kong and Beijing throughout 2006 and encompass five decades of cutting-edge creativity traced through i-D’s rich archive, from its beginnings in 1980 to the present day. Reinforcing the magazine’s position as the founder of all style magazines, it will also capture the essence of i-D, whose premise from its conception has been to empower people to express their own ideas and their individual identity. “The revolutionary aesthetic and philosophy of i-D Magazine have provided us with a bold monitor of our times” says Gity Monsef, Creative Director of FTM. “The Fashion and Textile Museum is proud to be collaborating with i-D for this seminal exhibition which will chart the 25-year history of our most visionary style publication.” The exhibition will use ‘identity’ as a central theme and explore this concept in its myriad of forms. Appealing to all five senses on a multi-dimensional level, it will do so with the use of still images, short films, 3-D sound, graphics and scent. Soundtracks featuring music and voices from around the world will form part of the installation, whilst perfumers from Symrise Inc. will work with i-D’s scent curators to create unique fragrances that epitomise the five eras that make up the magazine’s history.

Romero Bryan

Romero Bryan has achieved what most designers only dream of. His designs have been worn by Kate Moss, Beyonce, Cameron Diaz, Victoria Beckham and Usher. In 2003 his talent was recognised by the Royal Bank of Scotland when he was listed as no. 5 in the Rich list 2020 with a prediction of being worth £30 million and unlike most he remains extremely down to earth about his success. Having just graduated from the London College of Fashion Romero began designing in his early teens, and received recognition at the age of 16 when singer/actress Samantha Mumba wore one of his designs to the Brit awards. With prospects of a great future ahead of him, we managed to catch up with Romero before he embarks on his career. It’s becoming very common now for our British designers to jump ship and go to New York, is this something you would consider? Well I will be leaving for the BIG NYC August 5th, in the hope of finding a job or at least new clients there to buy my new clothing line. As you may see my graduate collection was somehow different to anything i’ve ever designed before. It wa much more mature, simple yet sexy. America watch out here I come……… Do you plan to venture into menswear? Eventually, but for now I’d like to focus on one thing at a time, and that is conquering the womenswear first. Which fabrics do you prefer working with and why? I love chiffons and denim. Chiffon because I love its fludity, its movement can be so sexy yet sophistcated depending […]

Lindsay Lohan’s Weight Loss

How true this is, I can’t be sure, but it’s reported that Supermodel Kate Moss, best friend Sadie Frost and actress Lindsay Lohan enjoyed a weight loss weekend away together at an exclusive spa. If correct then I have to ask “What weight????” What’s happening to certain women in celebrity land is absolutely ridiculous. Nicole Richie is so skinny she looks as if she’s just about to break in two, Mary-Kate Olsen just looks ill and Lindsay Lohan has already collapsed. Whether due to her weight we don’t know, but either way it can’t be a good sign. Yes, there has always been pressure on Hollywood women to look thin, and we always seem to go through periods where anorexia is constantly talked about and suddenly all coverage of the illness dies down. But now it’s been all over the media for quite a while and most of all it’s very scary. Not only for the young girls who look up to these stars but for the stars themselves. Richie and Lohan are bearing the brunt of it, with Lohan receiving a petition signed by 12,500 of her fans asking her to fatten up and Richie having to constantly defend herself, deeming her sudden loss of weight to her regular workouts with her trainer. There is no doubt that these girls are working out but there is also no denying that they don’t look well. According to the Daily Mail, the hourglass figure is back in fashion. Let’s hope so!

ASOS Profit increase

Online fashion retailer ASOS has reported a surging increase in profits due to new style trends set by Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. According to reports, sales to the year end 31 March have risen by 82 per cent to £12.8m while underlying pre-tax profits rose 77 per cent to a record £1.1m. Previously called “As seen on screen” ASOS have successfully found their niche by providing celebrity imitated clothing at an affordable price. Their current best sellers include Joss Stone’s hippy look , tailored city shorts worn by Kate Moss, and anything skimpy as worn by Paris Hilton. Asos chief executive Nick Robertson said the biggest success story had been footwear, which already accounts for some 12 per cent of sales. “Women like their shoes. We have mixed and matched the range and the current big sellers are wedges and Indian style sandals with beads and sequins on them,” he said. The success of ASOS really highlights how strong an influence celebrities do have in the retail industry. [Sharecast.com, Yorkshire Post]

I wouldnt be suprised if this is the next step for Victoria Beckham. I remember when most issues of Vogue or Elle had Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss etc on the front cover. Now even I look forward to which female celeb rather than model will grace their covers. During the supermodel era, “actresses wore clothes and supermodels wore fashion,” says Singer. “At that time, actresses thought it would damage credibility if they were seen as fashion plates.” But this generation of actresses grew up in fashion-centric times, and they’ve “come of age thinking that a love of fashion and seriousness about craft are not incompatible.” I can’t decide whether I’m for or against the celebrity fashion icon. I see the pros and cons but I do know that I miss the supermodel era. If you asked somebody in the late eighties/early nineties to name a model they would say the name of a current model without hesitation. Now not that many have a clue.

Get Autumn Ready With These Essential Transitional Pieces

Ladies, don’t pack away all your summer clothing just yet. Yes, summer is sadly coming to an end *sigh* but with many of our favourite trends continuing on right into autumn/winter, lots of the pieces you’ve snapped up will transition nicely. Here’s 5 key pieces you must keep! White Jeans White denim (here) is having a major fashion moment and you’ll be glad to know it’s not going anywhere, anytime soon. Swap that favourite blouse you love to wear with your skinny jeans for an oversized statement jumper in preparation for the colder months ahead. Overalls Admittedly it took us a while to master the art of wearing overalls (here), so it’d have been a real shame if we were forced to give them up so soon. Thankfully this isn’t the case. For a casual weekend look, wear with a sweatshirt and a pair of playful sneakers for a lovely day out lunching with friends. Floral Dress Nothing screams spring/summer like a floral dress. In fact, it’s possibly the number one hero piece every year and it’s one of the key items for autumn & winter too. Update your floral print dress with tanned suede knee high boots, a cozy gilet and a glam floppy hat for a look that transitions seamlessly. Flares We are super happy about the resurrection of flares. Nothing has given us as much pleasure as donning our flared jeans and channelling our inner 70’s goddess. Give your flares a classic spin this season and combine with a white t-shirt and a tailored blazer for a modern AM to PM look. Fringe Bag Remember that cross-body bag you weren’t sure of snapping up, but you couldn’t help yourself ’cause it was just TOO gorgeous? Well, it was a smart buy! With both cross-body bags and fringe being […]

Emma Stone covers American Vogue’s May issue!

Good things do indeed come to those who wait – why else would Anna Wintour wait ‘til all the other magazine covers have been released before debuting the American Vogue ones? The Vogue US May issue is solid proof that you save the best ‘til last, as it features Emma Stone – expertly photographed by Craig McDean – rocking a plethora of fabulously fashionable pieces on the cover and within the accompanying editorial. And her interview is a great read too, just as we expected, as we kind of like to think of Emma as our girl-next-door best friend. Inside the mag, Emma poses in threads from Christian Dior to Chanel and many more in-between, and also talks about her new films (The Amazing Spider-Man 2 included, naturally) and her boyfriend/Spidey himself, Andrew Garfield… “I think I’ve learned a lot by being around him,” she gushed. “And, you know, he is an incredibly important person to me. “It’s been fun working with him just because of who he is as an actor and person. I think it would be fun no matter what.” Aww, what a cutie! And judging by their appearance at The Amazing Spider-Man 2 premiere, we think their love is as strong as ever! You can read the rest of Emma’s interview in the Vogue US May issue.

American Apparel tries to defend its latest controversial ad campaign

American Apparel is to controversy what Mary-Kate is to Ashley, so it comes as no surprise to learn that the brand’s latest ad campaign featuring a topless model with the phrase “made in Bangladesh” positioned over her assets has once again got people talking. Creative director Iris Alonzo has done her best to assure people that the topless model who goes by the name of Maks (who also happens to be an American Apparel employee, may we add) was more than happy to get her kit off for the brand, but that hasn’t made the ad any less controversial… “We’d been looking forward to doing a photo shoot with Maks for a long time. She’s a lovely person and a great employee,” she said in defence of the ad. “We also found her background to be compelling for a variety of reasons and the ad came from that. We’re very proud of her and her bravery. “Like a lot of our ads, it has multiple meanings. The “Made in Bangladesh” headline refers to the origin of the model as well as an issue of critical importance in the fashion industry. In regard to Maks, she is an independent young woman who is forging her own path regardless of what may be culturally expected of her. We believe all women should be able to decide how to live their lives and have the freedom to express themselves.” Hmm, do you think that explanation justifies the ad campaign? Were you disturbed by American Apparel’s latest ad campaign or were you far more offended by pube-gate? Let us know! [Coco Perez]

Is anyone really fit to replace Anna Wintour?

You might consider our proposition insane, if somewhat impossible, but it could totally happen. If the “new” age for women retiring in the UK is realistically lingering in the seventies, then Anna Wintour isn’t too far off. At 64, the impeccably bobbed, Manolo-clad Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue faultlessly oozes that polished glamour so many of us can only dream of inhaling from the printer-fresh pages of our monthly subscription Yet, what begins must end, and recent rumours speculating Wintour’s retirement have got the style set buzz-chatting – some with confusion, others with a glimmer of excitement at whom might be deemed worthy to take the helm of the world’s grandest fashion institution. So, instead of suffering sleepless, sweaty nights figuring out what will happen to the physical impression Anna has left on her regular FROW spot – if she ever decides to hang up that Prada fur coat – we’ve gathered our heavy-hearted thoughts and picked out five possible replacements. Yes, human replacements, not some page-flicking robot with impossible-to-attain hair. Having said that, who knows what the future holds? The WAG-turned-wardrobe queen: Victoria Beckham Churning out winning runway ensemble, season-on-season, VB knows a thing or two about what makes winning fashion editorial content. It doesn’t hurt that she’s permanently well-dressed, backed up by a good-looking brood and a super-successful, hunk-in-pants husband. Her consistency, business-meet-fashion discipline and taste for luxury could easily put her in the pool of potentials. Carries comes to life: Sarah Jessica Parker Hey, hey! Wintour’s bestie (they enjoy “private dinners” on the regular), Sarah Jessica Parker, is possibly the closest suspect we’ll get to having an A-lister take the reigns after Anna. Although the actress has denied all rumours about replacing the powerful editor-in-chief, they do share a love for fashion fundraisers, Manolos and pretty dresses. Kate Boss. Not Moss: She’s […]

Lupita Nyong’o for Dazed and Confused’s ‘Girls Rule the World’ issue

Lupita Nyong’o blew us away with her Ralph Lauren red carpet dress on the Golden Globes red carpet at the weekend. She may have missed out on the Best Supporting Actress award to Jennifer Lawrence, but awards season is far from over, which means that she still has a chance to walk away with a shiny accolade to add to her mantelpiece. It also means that we have many more red carpet outfits to look forward to, but in the meantime, we will happily check out her Dazed and Confused cover to tide us over. The 12 Years a Slave actress covers the magazine’s Girls Rule the World issue, which also features the likes of Lottie Moss (her big sister goes by the name of Kate – you might have heard of her?), Little Dragon, Tavi Gevinson and Stacy Martin among others. Lupita was shot by Sharif Hamza and styled by Robbie Spence, and judging from the preview pics we’ve already seen, we can tell that this is one issue you definitely won’t want to miss! The February issue of Dazed & Confused is out on Thursday January 16th.
