The hub of all excitable activity, and displaying a manner of dressing that even those residing across the Atlantic strongly envy (yes, those polished NYC queens), London is a melting pot of acceptance and crazy, annotated flower diagrams in the name of Christopher Kane. But given the shows are essentially work affairs, where buyers behind affluent retail names come to place hefty orders, and editors come to coo at what they’ll be instructing Testino to shoot in seven or so months’ time, was fashion week on point? Did the runway looks deliver and meet expectation? Here’s what we thought: Translatability Tom Ford’s show during London Fashion Week had us, for the first time, sitting up and thinking about how a shattered crystal dress arranged in a mosaic-like effect was ever going to appear on the red carpet. Or, would we see It mademoiselle Alexa Chung rocking a teardrop cut-out dress from Christopher Kane’s spring 2014 collection at some high profile shindig? Some of the clothes worked – like Emilio de la Morena’s relaxed-but-city-slick separates and even Topshop Unique’s impressive line-up of printed spaghetti strap dresses and curved, cropped shirts – when it came to mentally visualising them on ‘real’ people in the ‘real’ world, but the goth cyber chick at Mark Fast made it hard to maintain that focus. Out of touch? In a rather interesting piece rounding up the shows in London, Cathy Horyn made a very valuable point: “As I went around London, to places and streets filled with ordinary people, I had the sense, more than ever, that fashion here was taking place in vacuum. Do they care about Christopher Kane’s naïve drapes and twisted flower dresses? If the public doesn’t appear to be even remotely listening, whom are we talking to?” With street style running the gamut at […]

Read MoreCelebrate cool Britannia with Rimmel’s new Brit collection
Ever since Kate told us to ‘Get the London Look’, we’ve been steadfast fans of Rimmel London. For nearly a decade now, Ms Moss has been the face of the cult British cosmetics brand and we’ve happily been following in her fashionable footsteps. After all, if it’s good enough for Kate… Now, of course, we can get even closer to supermodel glamour as Kate’s launched her own range of specially designed lipsticks for the brand. The London Lipstick Collection by Kate presents seven statement looks from the palest pinks to the chic and classic red. And, presented in sleek black matt packaging with a kiss from Kate scribbled on the lid, they’ll look just as great in our clutch bags as they do on our lips. Also featured in the Brit Collection, Glam Eyes HD Union Jack Eyeshadow palettes come in a cute union jack design with quirky shades such as ‘Green Park’ and ‘Black Cab’ – adding a bit of Brit cool to make-up bags world-wide. Plus, the iconic I Love Lasting Finish Nail Polish has had a Union Jack makeover too, with the caps now emblazoned with the iconic flag. From the most stylish capital in the world (its official, remember) straight to your beauty bag – morning makeup routines don’t get much sweeter. The London Lipstick Collection by Kate, £5.49; Glam’Eyes HD Union Jack Eyeshadow, £6.99; and I love Lasting Finish Nail Polish, £2.99, are all available nationwide now.
Read MoreThe purse-friendly models: Alexa Chung for Vera Moda and Daisy Lowe for Peacocks… why?
Events in fashion often occur in twos. Two Kate’s got married in phenomenal dresses in the same year; two high-end designers recently collaborated with US department store Macy’s, and even fashion week happens twice. Even if I am leaning on exaggeration here, there’s a recent mirror image fashion event that just can’t go ignored: fashion’s darling and retro ambassador, Alexa Chung, being snapped up by Danish high street retailer Vera Moda, and fashion model Daisy Lowe posing for Peacocks. Two very beautiful women, with every designer at their beck and call, vying to get them to grace front row, or even better, walk the runway à la Lowe for Chanel. So why would they choose to ‘downgrade’ and represent the high street? It more than surprised me to learn Chung, who is rarely seen without her trademark mini Chanel bag and sporting nothing less than an offhand, vintage-inspired, thrown-together outfit, took on Vera Moda. She’s not exactly a self-confessed admirer of the retailer’s average designs, and I can’t envisage Chung in its creations, either. But Lowe’s venture into high street modelling is a little more understandable. Playing loyal to blood ties, Lowe is the face of her mother Pearl’s autumn/winter collection – her seventh – for purse-friendly retailer Peacocks, and looks a delectable vision in a range of vintage-inspired dresses. But motherly love aside, the question still arises: why Peacocks when PPQ are on tap for this 5’10” beauty? Quite ironically, in fashion terms, I see a ‘trend’ arising. High street mega-brand, H&M, snapped up world-leading models Freja Beha Erichsen, Anja Rubik and Raquel Zimmermann for their spring/summer and autumn/winter 2011 campaigns. Although appearing as a mutually beneficial alliance, frankly speaking they don’t need each other. The chosen models make mega-bucks from the biggest fashion houses, and H&M has a […]

Read MoreChristina Hendricks models for Vivienne Westwood
The curvaceous Mad Men actress, Christina Hendricks, has certainly bagged herself a winning high profile fashion campaign with this one, as news breaks that the fiery red head is fronting Vivienne Westwood’s Get A Life Palladium Jewellery Collection. Looking as glamorous as ever, the actress models the latest gems from Westwood’s jewellery line, said to be inspired by nature, pagan symbols and crafted from the precious metal Palladium- an element from the highly sought after platinum family. “Vivienne Westwood has always been one of my favourite designers, so it was a great honour for me to be asked to represent the ‘Get a Life’ Palladium Jewellery Collection,” explains Christina. “I admire that Vivienne uses her designs to inspire change and the pieces are just so wonderful. I love that there are dramatic pieces such as the tiara and the heart necklace as well as more simple pieces such as the acorn earrings. As Palladium is a naturally white metal, the pieces really sparkle under the lights and I cannot wait to wear them on the red carpet.” And it seems Christina’s love for Vivienne is equally reciprocated, with the iconic British fashion designer sharing just as much compassion for the Hollywood star. “Christina is the embodiment of beauty and we were delighted to have been able to involve her with this new jewellery collection. Her style is just so complimentary to my designs,” says Westwood. The collection is now available from Vivienne Westwood’s Conduit Street boutique in London as well as the LA boutique, reports SkyShowbiz. Read MoreNatalie Portman condemns John Galliano
The shocking video that emerged yesterday claiming to show Christian Dior creative director John Galliano in the same bar where Thursday’s alleged verbal assault took place, in which the designer made anti-Semitic insults towards a couple drinking at a nearby table at the time, hasn’t done Galliano any favours. Black Swan actress Natalie Portman, the face of Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie fragrance, has said in a statement this morning that she’s “deeply shocked and disgusted” that Galliano would use such language. “I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced,” the Oscar 2011 winner told Vogue UK. “In light of this video, and as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr Galliano in any way. I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.” Galliano’s fate now rests in the hands of the police, but Dior is sticking by its decision to suspend him until the case is resolved. See the video of Galliano for yourself here.

Read MoreFirst look: Burberry Prorsum’s SS11 campaign
It’s a well known fact that luxury British label Burberry Prorsum is no stranger to haute heritage clothing – after all, nothing screams London style like a good tailored trench – so it comes as no surprise that it’s chosen the great British landscape to play backdrop in its latest campaign for SS11. But with Emma Watson and Rosie Huntingdon-Whiteley nowhere to be seen, Burberry’s swapped its fashion-forward ambassadors in favour of up-coming British models Cara Delevingne (Poppy’s younger sister, who’s biggest feat so far has been ASOS, FYI) and Jacob Young to kick start its summer satorials. Shot by world renowned photographer Mario Testino, the images see the two models looking nonchalant on a rather dismal looking Brighton beach – we suspect those pebbles weren’t the most pleasurable of props – and aim to give you the total Burberry experience by showcasing everything from its Prorsum, London, Brit and accessories collections together. Phew. But it doesn’t end there – the evolving summer campaign is the first of its kind for Burberry, with new faces rolling out each month from now until May, giving surely one of the most coveted platforms for young models-in-the-making. “We wanted to create a dynamic, evolving campaign that reflects the diversity of our broad global consumer, revealing new British cast members each month, all with their own identity, embodying the different attitudes of the Burberry guy and girl,” says Christopher Bailey. “We shot the campaign on Brighton beach to celebrate the great British outdoors and our history of supporting emerging talent and to bring to life the emotion behind protection from the elements.’’ An interesting concept indeed. Read MoreThe ins and outs of Vintage clothing
A vintage lovely can so easily become a retro mistake. Walking into a jumble sale and decking yourself out in head to toe 80’s and 90’s does not mean you understand vintage shopping. It will not make you cool, despite what the legions of identikit 80’s Madonna tributes walking around Hoxton might like to think. Nor is dressing in head to toe fifties a guarantee that you will look like a goddess from Hollywoood’s golden age. A retro mistake is just as bad as any other fashion mistake. But good vintage fashion is here to stay for a very good reason , it offers unique clothing of the kind of quality that only top end designers provide today. Plus it tends to be a lot cheaper. So what exactly is vintage? Well it’s certainly not an item of clothing made in the last 15 years, despite what all those 80’s and 90’s revivalists might think. But it’s still a fairly broad category, covering everything under 100 years old (100 and over is officially antique and deserves a telegram from the Queen or at least very gentle treatment).

I’m in a bit of a quandary about this product. I can’t decide if it is genius or spectacularly sinister. Huge Lips Skinny Hips by New York cosmetics brand Purple Lab is a lip plumping gloss with added natural appetite suppressant, Hoodia Gordoni. The company describes it as a “ground breaking lip gloss offering non-invasive access to the lips and hips women have always dreamed about. The Hoodia, the same substance that can be found in many slimming pills, works by mimicking the effects of glucose on the brain, tricking it into thinking you’ve just eaten. While Vitamin B3 stimulates blood flow to the lips surface and diminishes wrinkles around the lip edge. There’s also lemon peel oil to cool lips and extracts of meadow foam plant moisturize.
