Love or Hate: Ashish sequined bandana dress

My love of all things western stems from a holiday I spent on the west coast of America a few years ago. I fell in love with the Arizona desert, the cacti and the clothes. In my wardrobe is a silk western shirt complete with ruffles and embroidered cowboy boots and dice. Everyone thinks it’s fancy dress but I love it. This is why I was always going to love Ashish’s sequined bandana dress. It’s quite the statement garment. Constructed with Ashish’s trademark sequins, its A-line, black and has a deep-v open back. Attached to the neckline is a red and white paisley sequined bandana. It’s lined inside with fine silk and has a hem which stops about mid-thigh. It’s tongue-in-cheek, but it screams fun. Granted this isn’t going to be everybody’s cup of tea, and I’m not sure where I would ever wear it, but I love it none the less. You just know you’re going to have a good time in this dress. Ashish sequined dress with bandana, £965, available at Browns. BUY NOW!

Fearne Cotton’s haphazard workwear

We would hate it if we were papped on our way to work when we’re not looking our best, so we can’t imagine that Fearne Cotton was too pleased being photographed in this disastrous outfit. On her way to the Radio One studios yesterday morning, Fearne was spotted wearing an oversized cape – top marks for that one – that was hiding a very haphazard outfit underneath.  The tightly-tied up army boots with loose combat trousers teamed with a mustard yellow knit and a tan handbag were a messy mismatch. Did she get lost in her wardrobe this morning? Ms Cotton is known for her kooky style which we usually admire, so we’ll let this one slide – but remember, the paps are everywhere, Fearne. What do you think of Fearne’s thrown-together look? Cast your votes in our poll below. [poll id=”62″]

Khloe Kardashian isn’t reserved in red

It may be hard to believe that there are, in fact, days when the Kardashian’s aren’t dolled up to the nines (they even look glamourous in their gym gear). But spotted earlier this week in LA, youngest sister Khloe chose to hang up her bodycon and dress down – though she made sure she’d still get noticed. Donning a pair of bright red J Brand jeans (a favourite amongst celebs) to have lunch out with her hubby, we love their bright statement – but we’re not so sure about the oversized Burberry boots and handbag she chose to accompany them. If we’re honest, we’re surprised she veered away from the classic Kardashian uniform of huge platform heels, but if her feet needed a rest, a simple pair of ballet flats would’ve been better than those bulky boots on this occasion. Plus, we’d have preferred a black handbag to her grey tote, too. Still, we’re giving Khloe top marks for effort with her bold denim. But what do you think: are those jeans a hit or a miss? Sienna Miller looks fab in fur

Despite rumours that recent ex Jude Law has fallen back into the arms of Lily Cole just weeks after their split, Sienna Miller was spotted last night demonstrating that the best revenge in these situations is to look as fabulous as possible. Leaving the Theatre Royal Haymarket after her performance in Flare Path, she stopped to sign autographs for fans waiting outside looking as effortlessly stunning as we’ve come to expect in black ankle boots and tailored chambray short. And, despite the weather starting to cheer up (finally!), Sienna chose to finish the outfit with a short, shaggy fur coat, perfectly complimenting her hair and skin tone. Accessorising with a make-up free face and glossy hair, Ms. Miller is one of those lucky few who doesn’t need to be dolled up to the nines in order to show an ex exactly what he’s missing. Take that, Jude. [poll id=”56″]

Paris Fashion Week AW11 round-up

As Paris Fashion Week brought the month-long round of AW11 collections to an end, we’ve scoured through the shows to bring you a quick-fire round-up of our favourites from the City of Light. Take a look at our highlights from the sartorial proceedings in Paris below… Who: Alexander McQueen What: The collection, at times, maintained a softer silhouette than we’re used to from the house of McQueen, but once again Sarah Burton proved she knows what she’s doing with the label. With white tweed skirts, fur accents, opened pleats, grey separates, intricate suits, knitted fur detailing, raw chiffon frills, spray-on leather leggings, robotic bustiers, platform shoes and moulded silhouettes galore – this was yet another truly astounding collection, with McQueen’s signature style printed all over it. And the finale of wedding-esque dresses did nothing to dispel the Kate Middleton rumours. Who: Chanel What: Lagerfeld definitely celebrated International Women’s Day with his autumn/winter collection at Paris Fashion Week, and with raw silhouetted clothing making a profound impact on the catwalk, there was no denying the rough, tough and ready mood of the clothes: an abundance of boiler suits, cropped jackets, pleated trousers, tweed legwarmers, flat brogues and mannish ankle boots. Who: Louis Vuitton What: A quintessential collection of hotel uniform-inspired clothes, with patent leather jackets, sheer skirts exposing suspenders and bottom-revealing cashmere onesies completing the array of rule-breaking get-ups. Surprise appearances from Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss smoking stole the show. Who: Lanvin What: A collection of sophisticated silhouettes, with mustard and caramel draped fabric dresses aplenty. Who: Valentino What: A romantic collection of lace and cashmere, delicate jumpers and A-line dresses. Who: Miu Miu What: A statement collection of signature Sixites shapes, bold colour blocking and sparkly heels galore. Who: Givenchy What: A collection inspired by the Japanese kimono silhouette […]

Lindsay Lohan’s courtroom look

Waiting to see what Lindsay Lohan will wear to court has become more fascinating than what actually happens at the hearing. Her last two outfits have been a combination of body-con and cleavage-baring, so we were pleasantly surprised to see she was a little more appropriate in LA yesterday – but only a little. For round three of her courtroom appearances (she’s been accused of stealing a $2,500 necklace from a  jewellery store, don’t forget), she chose another body-con mini but this time in a khaki green leather. She did manage to cover up her pins, at least, with black opaques and finished the look with patent mock-croc shoe boots. We can only hope that the trial doesn’t end in jail time – both for Lindsay’s sake and for our style-watching eyes. What do you think of Li-Lo’s look? Appropriate for court or inappropriate before a judge? [poll id=”52″]

Rachel Zoe’s maternity style

Only celeb stylist Rachel Zoe would consider five inch thigh-high boots appropriate maternity wear but gosh, doesn’t she do it well? Attending a Pre-Oscars party in LA last weekend, the mum-to-be wore head-to-toe black.   Since LA is experiencing some of it’s coldest days since the 1940s at the moment (no, we’re not in the least bit smug!), Rachel wrapped up in a huge shaggy fur coat. The outfit underneath was very simple – skinny jeans and a black tunic – but it’s her uber chic accessorising that takes the look from drab to directional. Adding her trademark oversized glasses and a bang on trend Seventies floppy hat, Zoe’s outfit was a far cry from the average Mothercare mum attire. What do you think of Rachel Zoe’s look? Is she a slummy or yummy Mummy? [poll id=”46″]

Who will replace John Galliano?

So Galliano’s out. It’s a sad, sorry shame, but it was inevitable (and necessary) in light of his recent racist ramblings. Naturally, the fashion sphere has already begun speculating who’ll replace the enfant terrible – but let’s face it; those are some pretty big pirate boots to fill. With Dior standing by its schedule to show its autumn/winter 2011 collection at Paris Fashion Week on Friday, the pressure’s never been so high to perform – rumour has it some top editors are anxious of attending the house’s show because it’s been tainted with bad publicity – especially with the all-too realistic problem of poor sales looming. Suffice to say, we reckon Dior’s looking to find a new front (wo)man to direct its design pretty pronto, so let’s take a look at the names being thrown around already as possible replacements. 1. Riccardo Tisci Who: Riccardo Tisci, creative director at Givenchy Why: Riccardo Tisci has garnered increasing acclaim since heading Givenchy in 2005. He’s a design genius and he’s bold, but he’s also a safe bet, seeing as he’s already working within the LVMH staple (Givenchy belongs to the luxury conglomerate). And if you believe in history repeating itself, you’ll like this – Galliano was himself heading Givenchy before landing creative director at Dior. 2. Marc Jacobs Who: Marc Jacobs, creative director at Louis Vuitton as well as his eponymous empire Why: Louis Vuitton also lives under LVHM alongside Dior – if the powers that be want to keep it in the family, Marc could be in the running. Question is, is he ready to leave Louis Vuitton? 3. Phoebe Philo Who: Phoebe Philo, creative director at Celine Why: Another designer working under LVMH’s bracket, Celine is also owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, making Phoebe Philo another close contender. But […]

Cameron Diaz’s Vanity Fair faux pas

Generally speaking as your age increases, your skirt should lengthen. You wouldn’t think this rule would apply to someone like Cameron Diaz, but it seems that sometimes, Hollywood is not excluded. At the Vanity Fair Oscar Party Sunday night in LA, Ms. Diaz wore a monochrome animal print Carolina Herrera number to show off her fabulous figure. We were, however, left horribly disappointed. Only just about covering her behind, the skin-tight asymmetric dress with its peplum detailing was unflattering on the near-40-year-old, and wasn’t helped by the safe black shoe boots and clutch bag, which were a tad too plain for the daring dress. The outfit would have been far more more fitting in a nightclub than on the red carpet (and we reckon Cameron could do with putting down the dumbbells for a while – look at those biceps!). But we want to know your verdict on Cameron’s outfit – is it tantalising or tacky? [poll id=”44″]

Barbie gets a sophisticated makeover

Everyone knows that the iconic Barbie doll will always be remembered for her itsy-bitsy waist, platinum blonde locks and skimpy outfits, but it’s time to put the past behind us and introduce the conservative architect Barbie – nope, we didn’t get excited either. As the famous toy turns 50, she’s undergone yet another career transformation, and with previous job titles including astronaut and surgeon, this time we see the famous blonde turn into an architect. Not her most glamorous of career moves, but we guess it’s just another way for the media to banish those ditsy blonde stereotypes. Her new get up comes complete with thick black rimmed glasses, a blueprint holder, a skyline printed dress and high heeled boots, all aimed to get young girls thinking about their futures more seriously – and although it’s not in her preferred pink colour palette, the stilettoes and tight fitting pencil skirt still can’t hide Barbie’s love for all things fashion. “We believe the Architect Barbie will help inspire a new generation to consider the profession of architecture,” the American Institute of Architecture tells the Telegraph. The new look comes as part of the latest designs in Mattel’s Barbie I Can Be line, with the new architect doll hitting shops in autumn this year. Maybe we’ll see a rise in women architects? We’re not holding our breath either.

Olivia Palermo looks polished in Reiss

The ever-stylish Olivia Palermo frequented several London Fashion Week shows but one of our favourite looks was her gold Reiss dress at the Jaeger show. The City star flew the flag for British designers looking impeccable (what does she put on that hair to make it so shiny?) and remarkably relaxed considering the amount of shows she attended. By accessorising her shirt dress with leopard print shoe boots and a structured black bag she nailed fashion week style like only a frequent frow-er can. And knowing that staying warm doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style, Olivia threw on a fine frilled stone-coloured jacket  to brave the February cold, cementing her place in the best dressed lists. Top points, Palermo. Let us know your thoughts on Olivia’s look by voting in our poll below. [poll id=”36″]

London Fashion Week AW11: Aquascutum

Who: Aquascutum What: Modern minimalism, clean lines and colour pops Thoughts: Aquascutum’s autumn/winter 2011 collection is the first under Joanna Sykes’ creative direction, and what a path she’s paved. Combining her signature clean cuts with the label’s rich British heritage, English Icons feels like a fresh approach for Aquascutum, but it’s all the better for it. Outerwear is key, of course, taking traditional winter staples like the trench, field jacket and pea coat and translating them into something altogether more contemporary with tonal colour blocking, exaggerated proportions and a playful mix of textures – English tweeds, mohair, leather, suede, shearling. They’re sleek, but the occasional slouchy parker or puff jacket give an air of relaxed Nineties nonchalance. Traditional tailoring is given a new lease of life with clean cuts and matching separates worn together for a powerful statement, especially when injected with splashes of vivid orange and electric blue in gentle geometry. But amidst the modern minimalism there’s femininity, too, best seen in loose, long silk dresses and jumpsuits in soft slate shades and midnight blue, or sheer chiffon blouses in blush. And making a debut appearance, there’s accessories to boot – quite literally. Structured, pared-down ankle or knee-high boots with subtle coloured panels in a mix of suede, deerskins and tough saddle leather and grown-up, sophisticated bags with charming hardware form the perfect finish to this incredibly wearable-but-cool collection. Keeping Aquascutum’s roots but reinterpreting them into something very clever, Sykes’ inaugral collection for the British heritage label is nothing short of amazing – and we want it all. [Images]

London Fashion Week AW11: Jaeger

Who: Jaeger London What: British elegance in bright block colours, colonial references, relaxed tailoring and classic signatures with a contemporary edge. Thoughts: Among the dark collections we’ve seen so far, Jaeger offers a bright breath of air next season. Nude and blacks are still dominant in the luxury label’s autumn/winter 2011 collection, but they’re offset against bright pops of crayloa colours. A jewelled blue dress here and a fuschia shirt there is teamed with black for the ultimate colour contrast, while camel separates are injected with flashes of scarlett red for an especially contemporary take on classic designs. The winter coat – a Jaeger signature – plays a pivotal role for autumn, appearing in dramatic maxi lengths, sleeveless clean cuts, exaggerated capes and cropped shapes in rich textures. Detail is key here – oversized lapels, buckles and collars lined with fur or shearling. Dogstooth prints proudly reflect the label’s British heritage, as do Prince of Wales checks and sumptuous wools – an extravagance that leads into eveningwear with jewel silk dresses, colour-shock chiffon blouses and sleek jet blacks. Knitwear adds a rich texture to Jaeger’s autumn collection, appearing in mohair, cashmere and sculpted wool jerseys in neutral blushes and punchy earthy tones – shapes are oversized, falling just above the knee with ribbed cuffs or finish loosely at the hip. Bags remain classic but are finished with feather straps, textured panels, buckles and padlocks whilst shoes take on a simplistic yet contemporary approach – strapped sandals with wide leather cuffs have contrasting coloured heels, knee-high boots fall wide and textured and ankle boots come bright and patent. Our favourite part? Black socks with contrasting colour pop toes and heels – an especially fun touch to this directional collection.

London Fashion Week AW11: Jean-Pierre Braganza

Who: Jean-Pierre Braganza What: Structured asymmetrical tailoring, signature prints, tough leather separates and splashes of red. Thoughts: Jean-Pierre Braganza kicked off the shows at Northumberland House by sending out sharply constructed grey tailoring – asymmetrical cuts in the lapels and openings. Paired with fur collars and dramatic old school halfway poses from the models, the show started off with a gentle air, however, the clues were in the high sculpted ponytails and red blushed makeup for the dark and forbidding garments next in line. Sculpted leather dresses, skirts and cut-away jackets fixed together with rivets paired with black suede knee high boots and ribbed jersey detailing were added to oversized bombers. Blood red was introduced into the collection via a wool mini skirt and set the way for block red coats and suits. Reds then spiralled into signature prints on silk dresses and drop crotched jumpsuits. Overall, we felt as it looked a little bit like a collection we may have seen before from Jean-Pierre Braganza, but whilst it would’ve been nice to see a newer statement from him, it was a good start to the week nonetheless. London Fashion Week AW11: Fulguni & Shane Peacock

Who: Fulguni & Shane Peacock What: Glam-goth, bondage tendancies, leather and decadent gold embellishment Thoughts: The party week really got started at the Fulguni & Shane Peacock autumn/winter show, where punk rockers and gothics alike were taken out clubbing to grind to dirty house. Bondage elements were carried over from last season’s collection, with prominent leather piping and biker jackets with leafy gold embellishment taking centre stage. Craftsmanship was rife in all of the garments – red and black graphic prints were layered with both crochet and mesh, creating a messy yet uncomplicated feel. Models conveyed an edgy and angst-ridden demeanour and, adorned in ripped fishnets, metal spike bracelets and towering domed platforms, they looked every bit the provocative part. Appliqués, rivets and sequins brought fitting mini dresses to life and the use of the odd feather helped retain a slice of the sweet. Favourites would have to be a billowing teal blue mullet dress complete with body con upper sparkle; a nude voluminous gown with textured gathering, structural shoulder and hip add-ons and an elegant mesh trail; and the devilish soft jumpsuit, hardened by a splash of metallic baroque. Atmospheric excitement resonated at the end of yesterday’s show with a crowd left ready to take on the world sporting kinky knee high leather boots and saucy red eye shadow.

Stella McCartney in Stella McCartney (duh)

There’s only one set of people we like style-stalking more than celebs, and that’s designers. Let’s face it, they design the labels we love and the pieces we lust-after which, in our books, puts them on some sort of proverbial pedal stool. And very few, might we add, give us better sartorial satisfaction than Stella McCartney. A working mum on the go, she nails that everyday luxe look so well that we’ve given up trying. Wearing a black and white flecked cocoon coat over grey skinny jeans, black peep-toe boots and an ever-fab oversized Falabella bag, Stella’s tonal layers are the ultimate in laid-back luxe – and we love the edgy accents that keep a simple look cool. But we want to know your thoughts. Does Stella’s style scream success or do you expect more from Ms. McCartney? Cast your vote below! [poll id=”34″]

New York Fashion Week: Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham and DVF

Starting off our weekend round up of New York Fashion Week is the ever cool downtown designer Alexander Wang. Loved the world over for his easy-to-wear urban silhouettes and formal loungewear, Wang failed to disappoint once again with his Fall 2011 collection. With sleeveless parkas, luxe fur jackets and others in leather, black and grey separates, metallic footwear, satin pants, leather panel detailing, multi-split tunics, open toe leather boots and tassels galore, his autumn offering is perfect for that achingly cool Nineties inner city girl. Next up was our own home-grown British designer Victoria Beckham who, despite recently announcing her fourth pregnancy, didn’t let the bump get in the way. With impeccable tailored eveningwear in abundance, Ms. Beckham delivered a truly classic collection of trademark pencil dresses that we’ve come to know and love – not to mention a tweed grey, burnt orange and cranberry colour palette with the occasional pop of sunshine yellow seen across cocooning minidresses, laidback loosened silhouettes and draped fabric shawls – the epitome of chic, wearable every day staples. Last but not least was Diane Von Furstenberg with her eagerly anticipated vibrant ‘Goddess’ collection, where the signature colour-injected stripes and floaty separates simply oozed feminine fantasy. With bold graphic prints, sun-infused patterns, metallic accents, gladiator sandals, signature ‘broken cloud’ detailing and neon green and yellow splashes of vibrancy, the collection was undoubtedly the picture perfect backdrop for summer. Stay tuned for more daily NYFW updates…

New York Fashion Week: BCBG Max Azria and Vena Cava

BCBG Max Azria was the first major show of New York Fashion Week to kick start the sartorial proceedings yesterday, with Kelly Rowland, Ashanti, and Maggie Rizer sitting front row eagerly awaiting a promising collection. The clothes translated into a mixture of long and midi-length tissue-like dresses, many of which were backless or belted with soft chiffon layers, and a predominanty neutral colour palette with the occasional bright blue or splash of vibrant orange. Many of the minimal silk dresses came complete with turtle necks and sturdy Seventiesinspired cowboy boots – not the most feminine of looks, but the clean, modest sculptural detailing made way for an interesting wardrobe trend. Vena Cava Meanwhile over at the Vena Cava catwalk later on in the day, models could be seen strutting their stuff in a mish-mash of Nineties flashbacks, with cut-out dresses, crop tops, berets, long skirts, trousers and platform shoes aplomb. But the revival didn’t end there – designers Sophie Buhai and Lisa Mayock took the style inspiration one step further, creating a zine full of imagery including Calvin Klein Jean ads, No Doubt and Saved by the Bell. While everyone knows designers look to the past for fashion inspiration, we wonder if this delicious decade will be a sure-fire hit like the Seventies? Stay tuned for more from New York Fashion Week…

Steep vs Cheap: camel coloured trousers

The camel colour phenomenon to hit the fashion world doesn’t appear to be going anywhere any time soon – handy, because we couldn’t think of a more versatile shade – so with this in mind (and with the current weather being unbearably dull), we bring to you the camel coloured trouser as the ultimate weather-ready style staple. If your pasty pins aren’t ready to brave the cold just yet, opt for these stunning 3.1 Phillip Lim silk-crepe harem pants to help shield them from the bitter chill. Their lightweight design and loose-fitting cut make way for ultimate style and comfort – simply team with a chunky knit jumper and shearling trim ankle boots and away you go. However, at £320, they might be a little too steep for most, so if you’re yet to become convinced of their pant power, how about trying this cheaper pair at Topshop on for size. It’s almost impossible to resist a pair of tailored camel trousers at a fraction of the price, non? And at a mere £42.00, we’re struggling to find reasons not to snap them up. But whichever pair of tailored trousers you go for this season, hold onto them – you’ll be wearing them all through next season, too. 3.1 Phillip Lim silk-crepe harem pants, £320, available at Net-a-Porter. BUY NOW! Camel belted pleat-front tapered trousers, £42, available at Topshop. BUY NOW!
