Fashionable New Year’s resolutions

Frankly, we’re bored of New Year’s resolutions. Let’s face it, we’re not going to start that diet yet, and we’re certainly not putting pounds into a gym membership when there are so many sale bargains still to be had. Oh no, we think it’s far more fun to hear what some rather fashionable folk are attempting for the year ahead.

Tried and Tested: Lumecin and Eyliplex-2 by GoodSkin Labs

GoodSkin Labs impress me with their clinically functional packaging. The pharmaceutical appearance of the anti-ageing skincare brand’s products just scream ‘I mean business’. So when you read the science garble on the box, you expect it to be true. The brand is currently pushing its products as party season saviours. And with Jack Frost just about to start his winter stint, we decided to road test two products that sound particularly useful for getting through the cold snap.

Beauty Road Test: Front Row by Charles Worthington

I’m used to testing ‘miracle’ products from big-name, leading brands only to find them a disappointment. Many just don’t work. It’s a simple as that. So when Charles Worthington contacted My Fashion Life to tell us they were sending some rather special new products our way, I approached with the usual caution. High-performance they said. The result of countless years of experience collaborating with some of the fashion industry’s most notable names, they said. Tested at editorial shoots and fashion shows, the Front Row collection of nine styling products are suitable for both use on the catwalk and for re-creating the looks at home.

After-all, with a crack-team of industry heavyweights behind it, Revlon has arguably been one of the most exciting brands of the year. The 76 year-old cosmetics giant has undergone something of a renaissance since its signing of former Lancôme international artistic director and renowned make-up artist, Gucci Westman in May last year.

H! by Henry Holland launch party

So we’ve been pretty excited about Henry Holland for Debenhams for a while, but never more so than now. We popped down to his H! by Henry Holland launch on Tuesday evening for a sneak preview of what’s to come next spring. Full of high hopes though we were, we had our anxieties , Debenhams may well have a roster of big name designers (Betty Jackson, Matthew Williamson, John Rocha), but Henry Holland’s a little different , he’s younger, quirkier and, dare we say it, a tad cooler , would it really work?

Cube presents: Spring/Summer 2010 collections

Not so long ago, the lovely people at Cube PR invited us to view the latest collections from some of their favourite clients, including Bank, Timberland and Fred Butler. Here, we take a look at our pick of the bunch for next season:   Darkroom Darkroom is a new concept store that is set to open in London next month. The brand mixes high-end fashion and interior accessories and the store (which will be on Lamb Conduit Street in Holborn) will also house art and sculpture exhibitions. The collection at Cube was striking yet simple, offering practical pieces that could alternatively be seen as works of art to just sit and admire. Leather accessories from designer Fleet Ilya took inspiration from saddlery, constructed with moveable joints, while Medicine Douce (who has collaborated with none other than Christian Lacroix) used rope to create contemporary and unusual jewellery. Our favourite pieces had to be the hand-knitted leather clutch from Camilla Staerk and Von Sono’s oversized scarf.                           Fred Butler Entitled Hibiscus Ridiculous, Fred Butler’s spring 2010 collection was a complex spectrum of shiny, plastic, colour. 3D stars were the main focus of these accessories, in the form of wide-pronged chokers and holographic head gear. The props stylist and accessories designer won New Gen sponsorship this season and will be showing at Somerset House during London Fashion Week. It’s no wonder that her dramatic collection has grabbed attention, since Butler’s enormous 3D accessories have been used in music videos for The Gossip, Little Boots and Lady Sovereign. By the looks of the spring 2010 offering, we think this extravagant designer should be expecting a call from a certain Miss Gaga in the near future!                                   […]

Five minutes with Elle’s Executive Fashion Editor, Stacey Duguid

Stacey Duguid has led a life most girls would die for. After stints at Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani and Prada, Stacey was asked by Elle’s editor Lorraine Candy to join her favourite magazine, and now proudly takes her place as Executive Fashion Editor at Elle. Having met , and worked with , some of the most prestigious people in fashion, she doesn’t miss one trendy trick. In between jetting to and fro from fashion weeks, blogging for ASOS.com and writing her new book, Stacey found a few minutes to talk to us about her fashion life. What made you embark on a career in fashion, and how did you get to where you are today? I had a rather unsuccessful stint at Art school in Manchester where I was studying for a Fine Art degree, it was the early 90’s and the legendary nightclub the Hacienda was in full swing and I chose clubbing over art.  I moved to London a year later not knowing a single soul.  I took a job at Harvey Nichols on the shop floor and started interning for a PR agency who handled fashion label Red Or Dead every Friday for free. It was whilst working at the PR agency I attended my first ever fashion show, I was so young but remember it like it was yesterday; the fashion fire was well and truly ignited!  I went from emptying bins and sorting out post to working on the Red or Dead account pretty quickly and was able to give up working at Harvey Nichols.  My time on the shop floor was well spent though; I met so many people who are now all in very senior fashion jobs around the globe namely Chloe, Calvin Klein and InStyle. Interestingly during this time I applied to […]

Leigh Lezark seems to be everywhere we turn at the moment. The new edgy ‘it’ girl has been confirmed as Charles Worthington’s new campaign ambassador and will front his latest catwalk hair inspired range, Front Row. No guesses as to who is doing the hair at the Erdem S/S10 show at London Fashion Week today, then (it’s Charles Worthington, if you haven’t sussed). Fashion’s Night Out – London

While the Fashion’s Night Out event organised by Vogue in New York may have attracted most of the media attention, here in London the event was equally fun and a unique opportunity to meet some of our favourite designers and fashion icons. With so many designers about, this was not an occasion to dress down for, but the champagne and cocktails being served in almost every shop taking part certainly helped ease the pain of walking around Mayfair for three hours in stupidly high heels. For me the highlight of the night was talking to three of my favourite men in fashion – Christopher Kane, Osman Yousefzada and Rupert Sanderson. Sanderson, who is also celebrating three years of residency in Bruton Place, cleared away all of his beautiful shoes to turn his shop into a painting studio. Guests were invited to paint a white square of card and all the squares will be laid out on the nearby Berkley Square to create the largest high heel ever which Sanderson will photograph from a helicopter, sending signed prints to all the participants. Dressed in pilot-style khaki overalls, Sanderson seemed to be having a good time and was completely lovely. Why was his event not focused on selling shoes? He wanted to do something fun and this was the first thing that popped into his head, a celebration of shoes and “our manor” (the London equivalent of “his hood”). Then it was on the Bruton Street to Juicy Couture, Diane von Furstenburg, Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney and Kenzo.  With so many lovely clothes and people to look at and champagne on offer in all of the stores, it was hard not to feel like spending money. And that was pretty much the point of the evening. Poor Matthew Williamson was unable to […]

Rihanna goes topless for Italian Vogue

Rihanna has posed topless for Italian Vogue. The ‘Umbrella’ singer has taken part in a raunchy photoshoot with famed fashion photographer Steven Klein for the magazine’s annual couture supplement. The Grace Jones-inspired cover of the special publication sees the star clad in a structural feathered Valentino gown and patent knee-high boots, throwing a bucket of water at the camera. Inside, the daring pictures see the ‘S.O.S.’ star clad in just skimpy pants, with glitter covering her chest. Other images show her in a Madonna-style conical bra, and another has her donning a sharp-shouldered jacket teemed with just lace knickers and suspenders and boots. The Barbados-born beauty’s hair also dazzles in the pictures, sculpted into a range of high quiffs and cones, teamed with dramatic dark eye make-up and deep red lips. Most of the pictures have been shot in black and white, with a lone colour photograph depicting her wearing a turquoise dress and boots.

Tried and Tested: Dr Organics Manuka Honey Cream

I actually only discovered that Holland and Barrett had a skincare collection after being invited to a press breakfast for the launch. There are six individual skincare collections that make up the line and each offer different healing properties. There’s Aloe Vera, Pomegranate, Tea Tree, Vitamin E, Lavender and my personal favourite Manuka Honey.

Steep vs Cheap: Lanvin or Linzi?

Summer is itching to appear (promise), we had our sunny spell and now the rain refuses to go away. More than being very upsetting and rather annoying, it makes it difficult in choosing the appropriate footwear. It is morally wrong to be wearing boots in the months of July and August but unless you want soaking wet feet, sandals are not an option. Step forward the ballet pump, a hidden gem of a shoe, chic for work and play, they can be formal in black or add a summery splash of colour in a gorgeous array of brights. My favourites have to be the Chanel-esque quilted flats, in black, they are perfect for pairing with jeans, vest and blazer for that preppy casual look or a skirt and shirt for that smart office outfit.

Tried and Tested: Revlon’s Colourstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick

Generally, I’m not a fan of long-wear lipsticks. I’ve tried many of them in the past, mainly during a misguided but fun period as a goth. Dark lipstick was essential and at the all-night rock clubs I used to frequent long wear was the only thing that would do. Getting back on topic, I think I can rank the things I most dislike about them in this order. – In at number three, the fact that you have to remove a layer of skin just to get the bloody things off , it hurts and it takes too long. – At two, most brands make you carry around an extra stick of gloss or moisturiser, which is just one more thing to get lost in my bag. – And in top position, how much they dry your lips out. It may be even and lasting coverage, but if your lips look and feel like Dot Cotton’s then what’s the point? The good people of Revlon clearly have the same gripes, if not the same experience of testing them whilst laced up into an 18-inch corset and dancing to Sepultura. Their much advertised

Take That take Henry’s tartan

Henry Holland was delighted when Take That wore his tartan fabric during their recent tour. The British designer, who founded the House of Holland label has revealed the band’s stylist Luke Day personally approached him to see if he could provide red checked fabric for the pop stars’ ‘Circus’ stage costumes. He said: “Luke Day, who styles Take That and did the tour, asked if we had any left over tartan he could use for some costumes. They had the pieces made to fit in with the show and it was just using our special house tartan fabric. There were two jackets and two trousers.” The style icon, who is close friends with platinum blonde model Agyness Deyn, was thrilled with the end result. Henry said: “I loved the show, it was the biggest one I have ever been to and was spectacular!”
