New York pops to London

Two trendy New York shops are set to pop-up in London. 11 up-and-coming designers from New York’s trendy Lower East Side will be selling their collections in two pop-up shops, as London is given a taste of the LES’s voguish vibe. Running as part of the Wish You Were Here Swap project in collaboration with the Lower East Side Group, the pop-up shops will be transported to the Newburgh Quarter, near Carnaby Street in central London, for four weeks. Shoppers will be treated to a discount shopping night and an NY style block party complete with a catwalk show as well as a closing Halloween party as part of the month-long exchange, the timesonline reports. Aside from the obvious rail browsing, expect to take a free trip in an NY-painted London cab and nibble on naughty New York grub in the form of hot dogs, bagels and American brownies at the launch this Saturday. Well, that’s our appetite whet, quite literally. The swap comes as the latest in a growing trend for pop-up outlets, as retailers set up shop for a limited period of time: Topshop’s EDIT boutique has returned, Gap 1969 have recently launched a pop-up store in Kingly Street, and Gucci’s pop-up trainer shop is also coming to London soon. We can’t say we’re not fans of this trend, all this limited shopping stuff is pretty exciting. [Images]

Mark Fast’s London Fashion Week Show Causes Plus-size Controversy

Mark Fast has sparked huge controversy after using plus-size models in his S/S10 collection at London Fashion Week. The Canadian designer known for his super tight body-con knitwear used three plus-size models from agency 12+ on Friday, as well as the usual stream of waif-life models. But not everyone in his team approved of the last-minute decision, which caused both his stylist and casting director to walk out. Oh dear, temper tantrum? Fast’s managing director Amanda May told the Telegraph there were creative differences with regards to the casting of those girls. There was a team change and we’re glad we stuck to our decision. Mark Fast wasn’t the only one to go against the grain at London Fashion Week; PPQ used exclusively black models in their line-up and the Sykes collection was presented on models up to the age of 70. Whilst we’d hardly call Fast’s svelt size 12 and 14 models ‘plus-size‘, we do think this change is really encouraging and applaud the designer on his step-away from skinny. [Images]

Kate Moss to appear in TV documentary

Kate Moss is set to make an appearance in hairstylist James Brown’s new documentary show. The programme, aptly named James’ Salon, is a fly-on-the-wall documentary about the opening of the super model’s friends first salon, and according to the hairstylist, this is a chance for people to see the real Kate. He told WWD: “People will see how funny and warm and caring she is. “People will see the real her. The one-hour show, which is set to broadcast on E4 on Tuesday 13th October, sees Brown in full swing as he revealed he was involved in all aspects of the salon, from toilet-roll holders to cups and saucers. How refreshing. Apparently, the hairstylist isn’t particularly camera shy, either. “I forgot about them after the first 10 minutes, he said. Some are just born naturals, eh? We think this could be a great step for Moss – who made an appearance at London Fashion Week yesterday watching the Topshop Unique show. Her rare TV appearances mean the public haven’t always warmed to her, but perhaps that’s all about to change. [Images]

Yasmin Le Bon for Wallis

Yasmin Le Bon is world renowned for her beauty, her 80’s pop icon husband and now her new collection for Wallis. Wallis has previously had the reputation of an older woman’s brand, but Yasmin Le Bon’s first collection will most definitely put Wallis into the fore-front of high street fashion. When entering the show room there were two things that caught my eye. Number 1- The beautiful burgundy, backless goddess dress that gave me immediate envy of the mannequin that was dressed in it.

Not a problem, along with the lovely Winnie from

It’s no men at Christopher Kane

Christopher Kane won’t let men in his studio. The Scottish designer, who runs his label with sister Tammy, prefers working with women as he thinks they have more creative energy. He explained: “I’m just a girl’s boy – I think they have so much more to say and so much to give. My whole studio is full of girls, I don’t really like boys in there – they just mess up the dynamic and want to be the boss.”

Five of the best: Sequin jackets

Gone are the days when sequin jackets were only associated with bingo callers, Elvis impersonators and holiday park entertainers. Pick a good one and it really doesn’t matter if you’re wearing a comfy t-shirt and boyfriend-cut blazer is big this season and the same applies to sequin blazers. Think Miami Vice, with sparkles on. Then there are textured, vintage style jackets for that world-traveller, just-got-off-the-plane-from-Monte-Carlo-darling vibe. Just add smoky eye shadow and a pout. Choose the cut, colour and size of the sequins wisely and you could have yourself one of those wardrobe treasures that will become threadbare before you get tired of wearing it.

Steep vs Cheap: Denim Leggings

Leggings resurfaced around 2006 and season after season they refuse to go away. Available in every theme, whether it be animal print, neon or 80’s sequins, but right now for us the most desirable pair are jeggings or treggings or jean leggings, whatever you want to call them…the combination of the legging and the jean is just fabulous. Okay, I agree that they might not be the most flattering item of clothing but if you have a figure that allows it these are a lush choice. As comfortable as leggings but with a smarter edge, they look cool with a vest and flats. Or as an alternative to the super-tight skinny jean look without the discomfort, pair with killer heels and blazer for that chic evening outfit. These Current/Elliott jean leggings, available at

Interview with Fashion Blogger Mireia from My Daily Style

How would you describe your style? That’s the most difficult question to answer… I love being feminine, I only wear clothes that fit me. I cannot undestand trends that make the woman look ugly. Always with some rocking accesories! I hate overdressed outfits; that’s what I always try to look simple.

Luxirare is the latest blog to make the fashion flock swoon. Mixing mouth-watering fine cuisine with killer clothes (displaying her amazingly creative sewing skills), this is a blog that stands out from the crowd! This morning, you woke up: And tried to remember my dream about aquariums because it was one of the best dreams I’ve ever had. I grabbed my computer and researched aquarium dream through google, and found out the meaning wasn’t as satiating as I thought it would be, more like reading a vague horoscope. I shook off my mild disappointment and made two cups of iced coffee. How would you describe your style? Inferior compared to Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, Jennifer Herrema, and Anna Piaggi. What other fashion blogs would you recommend? Cathy Horyn for NYT, stylebubble.co.uk, seaofshoes.com, atlantishome.typepad.com, THEFOXYMAN.blogspot.com, Karlascloset.blogspot.com, childhoodflames.blogspot.com, and am-lul.blogspot.com. There are definitely more but if I listed them all we would never get to the other questions. Fashion tip for the season? Pay your bills on time before you shop. A good credit score is far more advantageous than having the latest Christopher Kane for Topshop piece. Try not to buy fast fashion clothing from retail chains such as Forever 21 or H&M. Try to think, will I eventually want to pass this on to my kids, someone that is special in my life or will I just get tired of it? I recently sold all this merchandise on e-bay that I thought I’d die without owning and eventually (within a month) I got so sick of seeing it everywhere and hardly wore it out. I’m sure everyone knows this already but good vintage is always a score and worth investing in. Clothes are only clothes though, the best fashion tip for the season would be to be content with who you […]

Lily Allen not collaborating with Kate Moss anytime soon….

She has rooms just dedicated to clothes.” Despite her fascination with fashion and designer labels, Lily – who designed a sell-out line for British high street store New Look in 2007 – says she has no plans to collaborate with the 35-year-old model on a clothing range. Referring to Kate’s Topshop line, Lily told Britain’s More magazine: “We won’t do a fashion line together. I think she does very well on her own. Summer 09 Trend: Desperately Seeking Denim

Moving on from the sombre and dramatic runway looks of last year, designers are opting for a more innovative, daring and colourful palette this season. It should come as no surprise therefore, given the “dare to wear nature of the season, that the 1980’s is yet again ripe for revival. Designers such as Danielle Scutt went for a trashy and flashy 80s look, and Topshop Unique’s collection looks like it has jumped straight from the set of a Bananarama video with its shoulder pads, boxy tailoring, denim jumpsuits, and candy-coloured motifs.

Summer 09 Trend: DIY Studding

Ever since the punk scene was thrown open to tattooed Vice-readers, the emerging metal revival has bubbled up into mainstream and high fashion. This time around, punk comes to subvert long-standing garments like the school blazer and the military jacket with studding and shredding work. Taking cues from Givenchy’s new all-black, chain strewn direction, the leathery wardrobes of models Alice Dellal, Elisa Cummings and Erin Wasson, and the sudden flashes of grit and silver on the runways of Balmain and in the windows of Topshop, it comes as no surprise, therefore, that DIY studding is on the rise. While hardware was once the domain of the Sex Pistols and their Camden Town punks, this season has seen Burberry, Wang, McQueen, Cavalli and Rodarte embellish lashings of leather and lace with gromets, spikes, conical and pyramid studs.

Summer 09 Trend: Fringing

Move over Dame Shirley Bassey! Fringing has gone beyond curtain trimmings and upholstery, surfacing in a myriad of chic guises on this season’s runways. Yes, this season, fringes are growing on anything and everything: dangling from the hems of skirts, jackets and dresses, embellishing evening gowns and footwear, even trimming bikinis. The burgeoning trend was prominent everywhere on the spring/summer 2009 runways from Alexander McQueen to Alberta Ferretti and Emma Cook to Elie Saab. Come autumn, the trend will still be going strong with designers, including Gucci and Anna Sui, embracing it as part of the folk look. Fringing has now captured the imagination of the British high street as the must-have finishing touch with retailers such as Topshop, Dorothy Perkins, and ASOS all embracing the trend with items that belie their price. Even the A-listers are in on the act, with stars such as Mischa Barton and the Olsen twins inhabiting a West that is sleek rather than wild.

Miley Cyrus grows up in Herve Leger

She was chaperoned by dad, Billy Ray Cyrus and was almost mobbed by screaming fans. Her day had been somewhat quieter with a shopping spree in Topshop. But back to the dress, it’s from the Autumn/Winter 09 collection and she teamed it with vertigo heels by Sergio Rossi. It is a fabulous outfit, there is no denying that. But it is very mature. Henry Holland’s off to Debenhams?

In an attempt to take a more directional approach to their lines and challenge retailers such as Topshop, Debenhams are rumoured to be in talks with none other than Henry Holland (the fashion journalist turned fashion designer and a supermodels best friend). Debenhams’ current designer list includes Julien Macdonald, John Rocha and Betty Jackson. Matthew Williamson also created a number of lines for the store. This would be a surprising move for Henry to make. Although let’s face it there’s a recession on and a steady cash flow would secure the mainline collection. But will it damage the brand? I never quite felt the same about Matthew Williamson after he designed for Debenhams. If it were Topshop or H&M he were in talks with there would be a real buzz about it, the problem is Debenhams brand image…let’s face it, they’re just not “cool.
