Chloe’s Sevigny’s new line for Opening Ceremony is revealed

In the UK Opening Ceremony is seen as one of those legendary stores. I guess in much the same way that Dover Street Market is for non-Londoners. With the launch of the e-commerce site, we thought it couldn’t get any more exciting. Now we could get a piece of the iconic store for ourselves without the pricey airfare. Well it just got better, Chloe Sevigny has just revealed her new line for Opening Ceremony at London Fashion Week, and it’s going to be sold here too! I loved the last line, especially those floral bodiced dresses, although Topshop were quick on very good look-alikes. At the Double Club on Sunday, Chloe showed us her new kooky line. And her inspiration? Well how about designer Miguel Adrover, mixed with a bit of James Dean, bit of old-school preppy and “gay lumberjack. Taking a note from Stefano Pilati, the range is considered unisex. Boyfriend blazers, leopard print cardigans and loose fit trousers make up this very stylish range. The footwear is also part of the range, in collaboration with Bass, those gorgeous strapped up shoe boots were created along with the loafers. And despite a hectic working life, it doesn’t look like Chloe is planning on giving up her designing any time soon. Explaining that “maybe I’d do a very small collection for one of the big luxury brands, but right now, Opening Ceremony is right-we have a shared aesthetic. So it looks like we can expect more from this lovely fashion pairing. Although I am a little concerned, if this collection is unisex does that mean those leather hotpants Chloe is sporting are actually intended for men? For any man reading this, do not attempt, you cannot get away with it, I repeat do not attempt. But on a final note, […]

London Fashion Week: Charles Anastase AW09

So what do you do, when you’ve put your best clothes on, your wearing staggering high heels, you’ve got your ticket in hand and then you have a door slammed in your face? This was my Charles Anastase experience today. After queuing for a while and having run from John Rocha, I was all ready with my ticket to get into the show. And after much waiting, and complaining of sore feet, we climbed the steps to enter, then the PRs turned and said they were now at full capacity, we couldn’t come in, and with that they closed the door. On the up side this meant I was on time for the next show, and after reviewing the images, I didn’t miss much. How to describe Charles Anastase Autumn/Winter 09? Oh I know, Peaches Geldof. I’m not sure I need to say any more. There was quite a nice striped oversized jumper, but it was no different from something you might pick up in Topshop. A velvet dress with floppy hat was quite cool, very Biba. But these were the only real highlights for they were lost in the mess of platform combat boots, ripped tights, gothic make up and what were in essence dull clothes. Could it get worse? Why of course it can, how do you do a model’s make up at one of the most anticipated shows? Do you go gothic? Romantic? Or maybe creative? Not if you’re Anastase, for he thought it was best to make it look like the models had covered their faces in mud. Nice. So the collection was mainly made up of baggy jeans, scrawled t-shirts, a bit of leopard print… Peaches’ wardrobe. But there was one must have item: see-through nylon trousers, my my, where can I get such wonderous […]

Daisy makes commuting fashionable

Unlike the other fashion capitals of the world, London doesn’t really notice when Fashion Week is in town. I will mention to friends that I’m off to the shows or the Natural History Museum and they will respond with “oh is there something on? This is very distressing for people like myself where fashion is not about what clothes you put on, but is a way of life. So anything that brings Fashion Week out into the general psyche gets top marks from me. Because this year celebrates the British Fashion Council’s 25th birthday, lots of lovely events can be expected in celebration. One of these is a range of illustrations by fashion darling Daisy de Villeneuve, which will not hang in a gallery but will instead adorn our Oyster card holders and chests. In collaboration with Transport for London, Daisy has created some quirky illustrations that will be sold on their new online shop. Daisy’s drawings are based on passers by from her time spent on our infamous transport system. Her images have a childlike cool factor and you can see why she is loved by the fashion industry. Having worked her felt tip magic for brands including Colette, Topshop, Shanghai Tang and V&A and magazine work for Lula, Vogue and Sunday Times Style. She has also managed to fit in time to exhibit and publish two books. On the TFL-British Fashion Council collaboration Daisy says: “I was born in London & have always loved it. I find it such an inspiring town, full of creative & interesting people. There is a special energy here, from fashion and music to clubs and magazines that is truly unique to London, no doubt the reason I can never stay away too long! So yes people, Fashion Week is approaching and if […]

Etam heats up thanks to Natalia Vodianova

How many of you ever shopped in Tammy Girl? It was the place we all headed to as young teenagers to end up looking like rejects from Blossom, or the long lost cousin of a Spice Girl. Yes Tammy Girl was for a time a British Institution, and Etam was its’ big sister. Etam, is nothing to write home about, it was a fashion shop, not cutting edge, not terrible. It eventually fell into difficulties and was bought by our favourite fashion tycoon Natalia Vodianova has become the face of the Etam. In a star studded catwalk show at the glamorous Ritz in Paris, Natalia’s line ingeniously titled Natalia pour Etam, was witnessed in all it’s glory by the likes of Eva Herzigova and Charlotte Casiraghi. The collection includes swimwear, lingerie and nightwear and is reasonably priced with top end being around $80. The line will launch in store from April and a further collection is expected later. The collection is wearable and stylish, with a gorgeous beach maxi dress and silk pyjamas stealing the limelight. It is still quite bizarre to see Etam connected with such high glamour. But one thing I do wonder, when are the celebrity fashion links ups going to end? When will designers take back the reigns under their own names? I’m finding the constant

Asda tackles the inbetween’s!

Supermarkets have been offering us everything from onions to earrings for a while now, but the two big brands are now seeking to assault the fashion world head on. Whilst Tesco plans to start a trading war with ASOS, Asda are creating the ultimate gimmick in denim: inbetweeny sizes. ASOS has been going from strength to strength and is dominating the UK fashion market. And so who wouldn’t want a piece of all that online purchasing action?! Well, certainly not Tesco. The super giant; currently has a number of fashion lines in store, which do in all fairness always create a media hype each season, and will soon be available online. So whilst you’re buying your spuds why not treat yourself to a new dress? Or perhaps a pair of jeans that actually fit? Thanks to Asda you should be able to do just that. Have you ever tried on a pair of jeans and they’re too small? So then you try the next size up and they’re to big? Well, Asda have set out to rectify that all to familiar feeling. The jeans will be available in sizes 11, 13 and 15 and all will cost £12. The concept came about after a study by University College London looked at body sizes and shapes using scanning techniques and 11,000 participants. It found that women did not consider themselves to be any particular size. Speaking to The Telegraph, George brand director (the fashion label at Asda), Fiona Lambert said: One of the most common complaints from our customers is that they are in between sizes. We all know there is nothing more unflattering than a pair of jeans that are too tight or loose. We aim to solve the dilemma with our mid-sized jeans. If we’re honest buying jeans is […]

Kate Moss is off to Hollywood

It is easy to overlook the talents of entrepreneur Kate Moss, in fact she’s probably one step away from a pitch on Dragon’s Den. We’ve seen her pouting and strutting for years, then she had a go at singing, and then there was the pole dancing and of course fashion designing. Not to mention the busy schedule of being a muse, a mum, a girlfriend and an all-round party animal. But now, according to the News of the World Kate has designs on Hollywood. She is reportedly looking for a career with longevity once her modelling days are up. A ‘source’ told the News of the World: “She’s always had dreams of acting. Kate’s nervous but feels, with the right backing, she can make the transition from supermodel to Hollywood star. It is also rumored that she is being aided by Michael Figgis, a film director who worked with Kate on those steamy Agent Provocateur ads. I’m not sure having appeared as Maid Marian in ‘Blackadder Back and Forth’ and Vicky Pollard’s mate in Little Britain Live is really the credentials of a Hollywood A-lister. And supermodels don’t have the best track record for making that jump to the big/small screen, Elle Macpherson in Friends anyone?! Although, Kate is such hot property I guess it doesn’t matter whether she can recite a soliloquy or not. Do you think she’d make a good actress? Are we looking at an Oscar or a Razzie winner?

Move over Kate, Beth Ditto is here

Kate Moss may have the title as the most successful high street celebrity designer, let’s face it Lily Allen and Madonna were a joke, but Gossip singer Beth Ditto may be set to rival the supermodel. Rumours have circulated since last year that Beth Ditto is in talks with womenswear brand Evans to create a special line for the high street chain. And now, Catwalk Queen has reported that a collaboration is set to happen. According to Catwalk Queen, sources have whispered that Beth has been working with Evans’ head designer Lisa Marie Peacock. It is believed that a collection will be ready for July this year. If Beth’s own wardrobe is anything to go by, then this collaboration is sure to be show-stopping. Beth is famed for her eccentric style, including those figure hugging catsuits that even Kate Moss wouldn’t dare to wear and an array of bold sequin encrusted dresses. The collection apparently consists of oversized t-shirts, graphic prints and studded handbags. And with Beth being tipped to be Love’s first covergirl, she’s set to reign supreme as 2009’s fashion icon, so you’d better watch out Kate.

G-Day Has Arrived: The Return of Gossip Girl

At last, the day we’ve all been waiting for; Gossip Girl returns this Wednesday at 9pm on ITV2! Reunited once more with Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate, Dan, Vanessa and Jenny, I can barely contain my excitement at the prospect of another season of Upper East Side drama, dresses and dead-pan one-liners. Since it’s debut in 2007, Gossip Girl has gone global, with its young cast dominating our screens and magazines: Blake Lively is this month’s Vogue US cover girl, Chace Crawford is Leona Lewis’ leading man in her new music video, Taylor Momsen has been signed to IMG, and Ed Westwick is, eh, snogging Drew Barrymore. But it’s not the stars that have most of us in a frenzy, it’s the fashion.

Are you ready for the return of the 80’s?

But clearly designers and the high street weren’t listening and we are now facing a 1980’s style revolution. But what should you expect? How about…body-con dresses and skirts, batwings, double skirted dresses, shoulder pads, high top trainers, rara skirts, jerseys, baggy jeans, crop tops and neon brights, oh and not forgetting taffeta (hopefully that one will pass us by).

You would have been blind not to notice the usual suspects Fearne Cotton, Kate Moss and Alexa Chung donning theirs recently.

The slithering sexiness of the animal print

I have a confession, it may shock you, it may even disgust you, but I am afraid it is true. I love animal prints. Yes, I know, but it’s true, leopard prints, snakeskin, crocodile, even butterfly wings. I really do love a print. They can look awful, tacky, cheap. But there is a certain charm, almost a kitsch quality to the tackiness of animal prints. And it would seem I’m not the only one who thinks so. The designers have gone print crazy for this season, check out Luella, Alexander McQueen and of course the king of print; Roberto Cavalli. Not forgetting the high street, which is currently inundated with all sorts of skin creations, many of them taking on a vintage feel. Peep toes, structured handbags and cropped gloves, manage to transport the tacky to the tasteful. There’s a 1940s feel to this season’s animal print trend. This continues the kitsch look but makes it a little more wearable. The most important rule with animal print is less is more and keep the rest of your outfit understated. If you want a demure approach go for a crocodile skin, the more daring will opt for leopard or snakeskin. If you’re feeling extrovert why not try a skin print dress like the one pictured. This Bolongaro Trevor, £135 from Urban Outfitters, will look great with opaque tights, ankle boots and the obligatory rouged pout. Check out Topshop, Oasis, and Miss Selfridge for great accessories. If you want to get more mileage out of your skins then head to Jaeger for some gorgeous bold snakeskin chiffons. Reiss also have some very sexy snakeskin shoes in an array of colours. Print is all about sassy seduction. Animal prints = animal instincts, purrrfect!

Skinny Jeans Get a Makeover

It is with much regret that I feel I should be waving goodbye to the skinny jean this autumn. However I needn’t worry, because the ever reliable favourite appears to have just had a makeover.
