Battle of the celebrity (inspired) bags!

Earlier this week, British Vogue speculated that Mulberry’s Del Rey bag might just be the luxury brand’s most popular piece of arm candy yet… and while we think the fashion Bible might just be right if current sales and interest are anything to go by, it got us thinking about celebrity bags and the inspiration behind them as a whole.

Lunchtime buy: Anya Hindmarch glitter clutch

When it comes to clutch bags, no one does them better than Anya Hindmarch. The British designer started her bag business in 1991 after being inspired by the luxurious bags that she had coveted when travelling in Italy, and it’s very clear that her design foundations were built on Italian minimalist, high quality chic. The ‘Valorie’ clutch is an example of such, and it’s a firm favourite for fashionistas. Its neat size and classic box shape ooze the understated luxury that we all look for in our accessories. But this season the Valerie has had a Christmas makeover, with the leather now doused in gorgeous, glistening glitter – exactly what we’ve been looking for to go with our party outfits, non? Shiny and sleek with the signature Hindmarch bow featuring on the push clasp fastening, this will set off our Christmas party dresses perfectly. Plus, as it’s made from soft and sturdy calf leather, we’re sure it’ll last for many a party season ahead.  Anya Hindmarch Valerie Glitter Clutch, £285, available from StyleBop.

The Current/Elliott Girls Have Got It in the Bag

What happens when a genius pairing comes together? Pure magic, in the form of the Westward handbag collection: the lovechild of cult American denim brand, Current Elliott and Kate Spade. LA-based stylists and designers, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott’s, debut handbag collection has manifested itself in a considerably desirable form. A well-crafted handbag commands nothing else to aesthetically complement it, and that is what struck me when flicking though images of the Westward collection. It is amazing how novice handbag designers – with the exception of few- have an infectious knack to perfect dimension, proportion and most importantly colour, so that the buyer sees it and is engulfed by the need to have it in their lives, (a bit like me, really). With the highest price point sitting around £790, it’s relieving to find a selection of covetable designs that won’t force me into premature bankruptcy. Current and Elliott have added their witty imagination to the canvasses of these handbags, and the result is a collection brimming with feminine charm, punctuated with Alexa Chung vintage cool and a spin on the classics – most evidently in the form of a sequined duffle bag. Top of my handbag roll call: Westward Curiosities Satchel in Navy; Westward Ingenue Clutch in Plata Sequins and the Westward Wanderlust Satchel in Taupe. A far cry from the intimidating ‘superbags’, costing my annual earnings; I can begin devising a plan of action to fund the purchase of the perfect trio – all at once. See the entire Westward colection here.

Anya Hindmarch’s Valorie Gold Glitter Clutch: Glittery gorgeousness

Enter the Anya Hindmarch Valorie Gold Glitter Clutch and try not to drop whatever you may be holding (especially if it’s your child). This stylish clutch is now signature for the designer Anya Hindmarch, and it is easy to understand why. It is exceptionally understated in its timeless form and style, yet classically appealing with its Hollywood metallic glamour and glitz. Yet I can’t help feeling torn over it and its accompanying price tag. Once again it’s that battle between head and heart. My head says: So, £225 may seem like a small amount to pay (in comparison to many designer clutches) for an iconic piece of signature Hindmarch, and our love of gold is very unlikely to sway in the future, but I just can’t help thinking that you might be able to find something equally as stunning on the high-street. Now don’t get me wrong, to receive this as a present would be immensely pleasing, but to purchase it out of my own money, when £200 more could buy something that would actually fit my day-to-day life in it and I could use it every day, could seem slightly rash. My heart says: This accessory would be the perfect accompaniment to any evening outfit. When I think about pieces from Balmain, Stella McCartney, and Alexander McQueen even, I can see that this clutch would work with anything and everything from my wardrobe and anything and everything on my imaginary fashion wish-list. And it’s just so GLITTERY and girly. It’s every girls dream, literally. It’s possibly even the Cinderella of clutches. ‘Where’s my credit card… (hunting around in bag)…no one shall stop me…I SHALL purchase this clutch. £225 is literally a bargain!’ Conclusion: So, is it an investment? I think it just might be. Anya Hindmarch’s Valorie Gold Glitter […]

We’re not buying Victoria Beckham’s Crocodile Skin Handbag for Selfridges. Are you?

Fashions multi-talented recruit welcomed motherhood into her plush LA mansion for the fourth time, after adding to her adorable brood a little girl, Harper Seven. Certain to be the best-dressed tot to crawl the Hollywood Walk of Fame (she will one day), her über stylish mother’s modish offerings just keep exceeding our sartorial expectations, and quite frankly, impoverishing us in the process ! Mrs. B has stunned the fashion pack with an exceptional £8995 crocodile skin handbag. Yes, £8995. The bag was unveiled at Selfridges on Friday and will be for sale as part of their Christmas collection;  rather fitting too in ladylike snow white with a gold hexagonal-link chain handle. In ownership of over 100 Hermès bags, Victoria is safely an authority in her own right on luxury handbags – and her newest creation is no exception. But if you take a passing glance at the luxury handbag market, and consider the likes of Nancy Gonzalez and Bottega Veneta – specialists in their own right and also creating exotic skinned bags – selling their wares at smaller price points than the near £9000 mark, you’re forced to question the price validity of VB’s latest offering. Having incurred negativity from PETA for her use of exotic animal skins and then selling most of her ‘superbag’ collection for between £8000-£18000 may, to some, seem an audacious act by a designer ; but it’s not so much the ethical background of her designs that concern us, more their practicality. I wouldn’t rush to say I view VB’s ‘superbags’ as iconic – no, we have the Hermès Kelly to fulfil that role. Having reportedly justified her foray into the world of accessories by complaining about other luxury designers benefiting from higher sales, thanks to her flaunting their wares; seeing VB jet-set around various airports with her £18,000 crocodile skin […]

Love or Hate: Holly Fulton Pony Skin Bag

I have had more than enough of this winter. I really don’t think I am meant to live in cold climates. I only need to go near someone with the sniffles and I get full-on flu symptoms. A personal low point was also a comedy-slide on ice outside a local coffee house while a team of business people sat by the window having their morning latte. Not cool. This is why my eyes were automatically drawn to Holly Fulton’s Pony Skin Bag. The beige rectangular clutch is part of Fulton’s recent collection, created to transport the wearer to far climates – think Amazonian embellishment, tribal print and exotic skins. With this bag I am Bianca Jaggar on safari with Mick, circa 1972. The pony skin exterior gives it a super-luxe edge and the front detail is just stunning; natural wood, leopard-print pony skin, faceted crystal and, my embellishment of choice, silver studs. It’s roomy enough to hold all your belongings and has a neat little black wrist strap to boot. The bag tunes in to all the safari and Aztec prints around at the moment. I’ve seen some All Saints tribal print silk trousers it was made for. However, if it was me, I would let the arm candy do all the taking and wear it with a simple black dress. Now where did I leave my passport? Holly Fulton Pony Skin Bag, £470, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Zandra Rhodes New Handbag Collection

‘My glasses, my purse and my keys,’ those are the essentials that Zandra Rhodes keeps in her handbag, but will she be carrying the Rose clutch or the Quartz shopper I ask, ‘Well [the clutch] is great for going out at night but the shopper is so practical, because I can only wear my heels for so long and I can fit a pair of flat shoes in there too.’ Ah, a woman after our own hearts! Indeed, last night we were treated to a preview of Zandra Rhodes’ new bag collection for AW10, and amongst cocktails and canapes – and a very chic nail bar – we got the chance to pick out our favourites from the range, with a little help from the woman herself. Where do we start? Well there’s the divine Citrine suede envelope clutch in raspberry which is finished with Zandra’s signature and chain detail print, or the colourful Peridot bow-clasp clutch which is embroidered with an abstract image of Zandra’s face. If you’re more of a statement shopper kind of girl like us, then you’ll love the turquoise moonstone bag – with a chain link strap just the right length to sit atop your shoulder and with a clasp opening to a more than ample sized bag, you’ll be able to fit all your essentials (and a pair of flats!) in their easily. Other stand out pieces include the fun Sunstone clasp-close mini bags that feature a rose gold logo plate from her heritage collections, and the half Moonstone clutch bags which make for a perfect evening option. With its bold and fruity colour palette the collection is unmistakably Zandra, but the finishing touches, such as the shocking pink inside of the bags and the heritage prints and logos don’t dominate the look and […]

Lunchtime buy: Miu Miu bird suede and python clutch

You might think perhaps that the combination of textures, the repetition of the dusky pink against solid black and the scalloped edging as well as the attention-grabbing bird motif might be a bit too fussy; yet somehow it works in a way that exudes girly charm and sophistication. Judith Leiber Beehive clutch

Something’s got us buzzing this morning, and it’s not an excess of coffee; we’ve just caught sight of the Judith Leiber Beehive clutch. If you’re familiar with the luxury American accessories designer, who’s crystal-clad clutches have caught our eye many a time before (remember the elephant and camel or that disco ball?), you’ll know her designs have no limits. Enter the Beehive clutch. There aren’t many designer’s who can put forth a bag in the shape of an irritating insect’s nest and it be considered high fashion, but Leiber, of course, somehow pulls it off. Perhaps it’s the painstaking process of hand-painting and hand-embellishing the clutch , we’re talking crystal by crystal, here , that makes us ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ in awe. Or perhaps it’s the simple fact that a gold and black crystal-covered beehive makes us feel as though we’ve entered the grown-up world of Winnie the Pooh, where bees can be beautiful, and whimsical, wonderful accessories can be classic all the same. Stunning though it may be, however, it’s hardly a practical purchase. Though we seriously doubt anyone willing to pay the £4,320 price tag that comes with this sweet little statement clutch has practical on the mind. Still, can’t say we’d mind clutching onto this leather-lined Leiber case. Judith Leiber Beehive clutch, £4,320, available at Net-A-Porter.com

Marchesa to launch handbag collection

Marchesa is set to launch its first accessories collection. The handbags, set to launch in spring, are a collection of 28 clutches and evening cases, and you can bet your bottom dollar they are every bit as elaborate as their stunning gowns and dresses. Featuring beading, pleating and corsetry, key styles include an oval silver clutch with complicated beading and embroidery detail and clutches with tassels and rock jewels. Exotic alligator, crocodile and lizard skins have also been used. Speaking to WWD, Georgina Chapman, co-founder and designer, said: “We had never done accessories, so we thought, ‘let’s approach it the way we approach a dress’. As you’d expect, the collection of clutches coordinate with the mainline dresses, but Chapman insists you could wear them more often than you’d first imagine. “Some people don’t always have an occasion for a gown, she says. “You could wear these with jeans and a T-shirt. The only requirement for the bags was that they fit a night’s essential kit: a BlackBerry, cosmetics and keys. Keren Craig, other half of the Marchesa duo, said: “We were frustrated because we couldn’t find [an evening] bag to fit it all. “These are timeless styles, and it was important that they be unique. The designs will debut at Marchesa’s spring presentation, on September 16th at the Chelsea Art Museum, New York, and will arrive in eveningwear and accessory departments in key stores next year. Separately from Marchesa, Chapman is also working with British jeweller Stephen Webster to create a capsule jewellery collection, which will be unveiled this autumn. [Images]

It’s weird. I love bags and I’ll be the first to admit that I have an unhealthy obsession. But my ratio of shoulder bags to clutches is oddly disproportionate. I only ever come to this conclusion when I’m dressed to impressed, on my way out and stressed beyond belief because I can’t find a clutch to match my outfit for the evening. I always promise myself that asap I’ll invest in more clutch bags but I always end up falling head over heels for yet another shoulder bag or a tote. This weekend was the last straw. So as soon as I got over my hangover I set about hunting first and foremost for a classic clutch whilst I build up my collection. I didn’t have to look too far. I fell in love almost immediately with this metallic clutch by Botkier. I’m still not over metallics and I adore the detail. It’s on sale, which makes it even more adorable. So, it’s settled. I’m pumping new life into my shameful collection of clutch bags with this beauty and I’m on the hunt for more! I’ll keep you posted. £270 £135 available at www.my-wardrobe.com

While doing my blog rounds on Friday, both worlds collided when I saw this keyboard shopping bag. My first thought was, “interesting”…second thought, “would I actually carry one?” The Keybag, which also comes in black, is designed by Portuguese designer João Sabino. Like the cupcake clutch, I do love the concept. However 80% of my day is spent banging away at a keyboard, so could I see myself carrying one around too? Not so much.n {democracy:22}

Handbags on Steroids: Oversized Mania

I’m very much a minimalist when it comes to carting around personal possessions – the lighter and smaller the bag, the better, unless I’m purposefully aiming for an arm workout or backache. I was very excited for the recent clutch movement and am surprised to see the opposite end of the spectrum still taking on more size. Perhaps this is a ploy by designers to produce even more expensive bags? After all, bigger bags = bigger price tags? In recent months, we’ve spotted fashionistas on the town toting ridiculously giant bags (most notoriously,

When Good Bags Go Wrong!

Who was it that said “less is more,” or to rephrase, that “more is just more?” Whomever it was, word does not seem to have reached the bag design team at Marc Jacobs and now Chloe. While Marc seemingly did the impossible and created something truly garish in his ‘bag on a bag’ um, bag, Chloe just tossed a lot of flap/buckle clasps onto this clutch.
