Everyone at the moment seems to be speculating about fashion’s future with Time magazine suggesting the industry is in a “state of medical emergency” and rightly so. Fashion is undoubtly stagnant and stale and with the number of celebrity labels which have infiltrated the market it is no wonder that it has become solely about marketing, i.e Topshop and Kate Moss. Watching footage of Hussein Chalayan’s show at Paris fashion week Spring/Summer 07 showed and gave hope to all that there is a future and an interesting one at that. Not the first designer to mix technology into fashion, (there are others before such as Alexandra Fede.) However Chalayan communicated the idea that technology could play an important role effectively and successfully. Using technology to create movement with zippers, hemlines and sleeves and to transform structure. He’s connected the two industries at a time when we are all in desperate need of refreshing and new ideas. The relationship between fashion and technology got off to a slow start and I must say I doubted if it would work and whether consumers would be accepting of it. But I’m absolutely certain now that technology is fashion’s future. It’ll be exciting to see the different ways designers will incorporate technology into fashion to create style in their collections.

Kate’s kiss for Jemima
Topshop boss Philip Green is a very lucky man indeed, after bidding and winning a kiss with Kate Moss for £60,000 the multi-millionaire decided he would much rather see the supermodel kiss Jemima Khan (Hugh Grant’s girlfriend) instead. Both women must have enjoyed the experience as it lasted for over 60 seconds…unfortunately pics of the steamy kiss cant be published. Instead they will be sold, with all proceeds from the sale going to Hoping Foundation for Palestinian refugee children whom the auction was held in aid of. View more images at Vogue

Love Vintage? Then you’ll want to know about Joe Prince, a vintage fashion boutique dedicated to the rare, retro and more individual pieces in fashion…. What makes Joe Prince unique? There are a number of sites out there selling vintage and retro fashion but we’re trying to do things a little differently. We have a huge passion for fashion…new and old. Current designers are constantly taking inspiration from what has gone before and translating it into a modern interpretation of the latest look. At Joe Prince we have our eye on the runway and source items from the past which you will see in the stores next season. Most vintage sellers just buy up anything vintage! We purchase items from all over the world to ensure that we have an eclectic mix of products on our website and we want the vintage pieces we select to work within a modern wardrobe. We want our customers to find something at Joe Prince which they will treasure forever but wear to death! What do you think is so appealing about Vintage clothing? Vintage is perfect for the girl (or guy!) who has nightmares about walking into a bar and seeing someone else in exactly the same outfit! Vintage pieces, by their very nature, are unique and individual, so this appeals to the fashion trend-setters. I also think the stories behind the vintage clothes are appealing. For example, I recently bought some dresses from a lady’s estate in Texas. Apparently she was ‘lady of the manor’ and used to host cocktail evenings and balls at her home in the 1920’s. I bought some of her cocktail dresses and I can just imagine her gliding down her marble staircase ready to greet her guests!

Originating from a career in advertising, Kal Kaur Rai began designing clothes as a hobby. However after supplying a boutique on a sale or return basis and completely selling out, Kal knew it was time to take her hobby seriously. Launched in 1997, the label now boasts a clientele of Beyonce, Mariah Carey and Victoria Beckham and is stocked in over 70 independent stores including Topshop. 2004 saw Kal Kaur Rai adding to her CV the honorary title of Winner of the young achiever of the year at the Asian business awards. Whom would you credit as being an inspiration? Women who understand the power of dress and style are an inspiration to me. What do you have in store for us design wise for Spring/Summer 2005? For S/S I am doing an eclectic mix of long boho skirts and ethnic inspired tops. Lots of embellishment and colour. What one piece of advice would you give to a budding fashion designer? Your finger must be on the pulse at all times. The fashion industry is like a roller coaster ride, you have to be ready to take the rough with the smooth. Each season is like starting a new business. Time is moving so fast anyone would think it was chasing Beyonce’s ass. (Yes that girl is sex all the way and she has a damn good stylist, who is working that diva look for her). Anyway spring is making its way to your side of town ALREADY, therefore its time to put away all those dark colours and force yourself to try out the pinks, blues, greens and yellows. Fashion is so exciting right now, and most of all individuality is being embraced. So tap in to your creativity and create a couple of trends of your own. Try out ribbons; tie them round your neck, your waist or even your wrists. Get out of those trousers and jump in to skirts and cropped trousers, let go of those jumpers that have hugged you through winter and replace them with fitted tops. And finally pack away the parkas and invest in a Trenchcoat.
