This week’s BDOTW style champion didn’t just bowl us over with one look, but in fact four different looks! One of our all time favourite French supes (that’s supermodel to you and me), Laetitia Casta attended the Venice Film Festival this week in a selection of delectable dresses good enough to eat! OK, so she didn’t opt for anything fruity or edible (Stella McCartney spring/summer 2011 anyone?), but her choices were too tasty to ignore! Opening up on an uber-glam note, Laetitia opted for a sheer lace Dolce & Gabbana gown. Looking beyond terrific (have you seen that washboard stomach?), our fave supe went a step braver and opted to don a black bra and pants under the gown, for all to see. Now that’s brave. Next up, a stunning embroidered Fall 2012 Valentino dress which was teamed with lust-worthy white Giovanti Rossi pumps. Swoon! Then came the ultimate LBLD (Little Black Lanvin Dress) the model sported at the pre-festival dinner held by Vogue Italia. Hailing from the Pre-Fall 2012 collection; Laetitia teamed the dress with Louis Vuitton cap-toe pumps. Simply divine. The form-fitting floral Dolce & Gabbana second scorer had us squealing with sartorial delight, as Laetitia injected a little fun print into her red carpet wardrobe. She topped the look off nicely with Sergio Rossi ‘Chi Chi’ pumps in unexpected electric-blue. Appearing in an array of snap-worthy dresses is definitely the way to our hearts – an art form Ms. Casta has down to a T!

Barneys teams up with Disney for its festive “Electric Holiday” campaign
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… we love it when Disney meets fashion! Not only do we have a London Fashion Week full of Minnie Mouse outfits to look forward to next month, but across the pond, Barneys is getting its Disney on too! Barneys has officially teamed up with The Walt Disney Company for the store’s highly anticipated Christmas campaign – last year it had Lady Gaga, remember? – entitled “Electric Holiday”, and will be unveiled on November 14th at the Madison Avenue flagship store. A short film consisting of some of the most iconic Disney characters walking the runway in some of the hottest designer pieces will be displayed in the windows. “When we got to the moment when all Disney characters walk on the runway, there was a discussion,” said Barneys New York creative director Dennis Freedman. “The standard Minnie Mouse will not look so good in a Lanvin dress. There was a real moment of silence, because these characters don’t change. I said, ‘If we’re going to make this work, we have to have a 5-foot-11 Minnie,’ and they agreed. When you see Goofy, Minnie and Mickey, they are runway models.” Wow. Talk about excited! What do you think of Minnie Mouse in Lanvin, Daisy Duck in Dolce and Gabbana and Goofy in Balmain? [WWD]
Read MoreEmma Stone gets futuristic for Interview, talks hair colours and heartbreak
Actress-of-the-moment Emma Stone is a long way away from the usual girl-next-door we normally associate her with, as she poses for a very futuristic photoshoot for Interview. As well as donning some gorgeous outfits from the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Versace, Christopher Kane and Haider Ackermann (among others) for Mikael Jansson’s camera, Emma opens up to the mag about more personal matters. “I was crawling on the floor,” she told the magazine about going through a break-up. “I remember throwing up … within the hour. I remember being on the floor … I have never felt anything quite like that. It was so visceral. It’s like someone has killed you and you have to live through it and watch it happen … It was awful.” Aww, can we hug her? We know she has her The Amazing Spider-Man hottie boyfriend Andrew Garfield now, but still… On a slightly less depressing note, she also speaks out about her hair colour, which is apparently always a hot topic of discussion. “I had to dye it red for Superbad,” she said. “They didn’t let me go back to blonde until Spider-Man. “Now I’m back to my roots. But I get a lot of questions about hair colour. People are very into talking about hair. Why do you think that is? Is it because I’m a girl?” We can’t say for sure Emma; but we’d wager it might have something to do with the fact that you look gorgeous no matter what, and people want to get some tips from you? Just a hunch! [Fashion Etc]

We knew it! We knew that we shouldn’t have got too attached to the sun and its glorious rays, because as we predicted, those degrees have already started to drop. Well, it was fun while it lasted! However, we’re still remaining relatively optimistic that the sun will return to us in good old Blighty, which is why we haven’t banished our summer clothes to the back of the wardrobe or ruled out buying more summer-appropriate pieces just yet. We’ve already covered the summer-ready dresses, so now it’s time to look at some fine, fancy and FLAT footwear, just in case we are blessed with another short-lived (but much appreciated) heatwave. This is most definitely not cheating, and the “must stop blogging about every single item Blake Lively is wearing on her Savages promo tour” goal we set ourselves isn’t proving difficult at all, honest. Shifty eyes… Ok, we admit that we’ve been besotted with Blake Lively’s wardrobe recently, but one look we didn’t manage to rant and rave about which we feel deserves extra attention was her hot pink Lanvin one! We’ve always regarded Blake as a bit of a Barbie, with her blonde locks, legs that go on for decades and very ample, generous chest. So, seeing her in a hot pink Barbie ready-ensemble was the icing on the cake. We want some Blake/Barbie in our lives too, so we’ve selected some pieces that should help us get one step closer to our plastic fantastic childhood best friend. Yesterday’s ‘Celebrity Style’ post was focused on the ever-gorgeous Blake Lively, so as much as we wanted to gush about the TWO beautiful Marchesa and Jenny Packham outfits she wore to The Late Show last night, we thought we’d give someone else a go in the style spotlight. It’s only fair, after all. So, from Gossip Girl to Spice Girl (see what we did there?) we present you: Melanie Chisholm. Mel C, i.e. Sporty Spice, definitely gets our style gold medal for her immaculate appearance at yesterday’s press call for the announcement of the Viva Forever! musical. Don’t act like you’re not excited about it – we’ve seen you Googling the date of opening night! As usual, Victoria Beckham looked pristine, polished and you guessed it, posh, but did you honestly ever think you’d see Sporty Spice in an elegant white mullet dress? No. Exactly – hence why we are showing our appreciation for Mel C’s sartorial choice in the best way we know how. While we loved Emma Bunton’s cute style (we adore those Brian Atwood platforms!) and were quite fond of Geri Halliwell’s flirty (albeit slightly age inappropriate) dress and Mel B’s Lanvin number, Mel C gets our best-dressed vote without a doubt. We love a good fashion risk, and this white Acne dress was definitely one which paid off. Mel C is our best dressed, but who is yours? Vote now! [poll id=”352″] [Image]

Read MoreIs Alber Elbaz the only ‘real’ designer left?
It’s rare, these days, for a designer belonging to a fashion house owned by a large conglomerate to truthfully speak their mind. Expectations, expected silences and a certain submission are all part and parcel of nurturing someone else’s (fashion) baby, albeit you’re the one who takes a bow out on that runway before a terrifyingly discerning audience. Last week, I came across a piece in The Independent on Lanvin’s loveable artistic director, Alber Elbaz, about his hatred for the word ‘cool’ and his vehement passion for the very creative roots from which he comes. Put simply, he highlighted how the fashion world has, to a set degree, become a theatre act, dramatic designers the puppeteers – I’ll leave you to guess who the puppets are… At the helm of luxury powerhouse Lanvin, Elbaz has quietly transformed this brand into a superpower, celebrated by the celebrity and fashion pack alike. Arriving in 2002, Elbaz took the then ailing brand into his hands, and like a little romantic fairy, brought it back to the fore. In the article, Elbaz, although mentioning no names refers to the spectacle that is the inside fashion pack, and how the industry has increasingly become detached from what it originally set out to do. He also speaks with a certain sadness in his voice on the overdriven rumour mill of who-replaces-who every time a fashion house restructures its creative team, and the pain of his own somewhat history-making dismissal from YSL in 1999 after the Gucci group brought out the brand, for reasons no other than Tom Ford wanting to creatively take over. Talking proudly of a soon-to-be-published book marking his tenth anniversary at Lavin, Elbaz said: “I thought that at a time like now, when the whole industry is about the six minutes of the show […]

Yesterday saw the launch of the Conscious Collection by Swedish high street retailer, H&M. The eco-friendly collection boasts an Exclusive Conscious collection; red carpet ready pieces crafted from sustainable materials, and following in line with the Swedish retailer’s goal to become the leading name in sustainable design. Exclusive Conscious consists of beautifully crafted floor length gowns and dresses drenched in high-end appeal, meeting the demands for au courant cuts and silhouettes, and keeping loyal to the biggest trends of spring/summer 2012. Doused in colour pop neon and mimicking couture pieces with a pocket-pleasing price tag, you can snap up a Katrantzou-esque hyper-floral form-fitting dress for a fractional £39.99, or maybe a Lanvin-inspired printed dress with a front split, detachable skirt is suited to your style palate at a smile inducing £149.99. This is visually pleasing, well crafted fashion with an untainted production conscience that eliminates the purchasing hierarchy, and allows such fashion to spread itself thinly. See, the glam-gone-green concept has been floating around for some time: H&M produces seasonal Conscious Collections, crafted entirely from 100% organic cotton; Eco-Age creative director and wife of Oscar-winning actor, Colin Firth, Livia Firth, is a well-know sustainable fashion ambassador, and some of the Exclusive Conscious pieces have already made their debut on the red carpet. But let’s look at the reality of it all; can H&M, the fashion world’s equivalent of McDonalds, really claim to be greener than the Amazonian rainforest? Or, even more importantly, can H&M solely produced dresses – minus a high-end designer collaboration tag – really cut it as glamorous when, in fact they are cut price and no match to a Zac Posen ruffled hem gown? The latter, you may say, has already been achieved when Viola Davis and Michelle Williams opted to wear dresses from the Exclusive Conscious range […]

Read MoreRolling in the Deep – trouble that is, Mr Lagerfeld
We’re gearing up to kick off fashion month – well, NYFW is well under way with several reports of FROW-gracing celebrity IT girls- and it’s all getting a little heated. Kanye’s decided to show in one of fashion’s most easily offended cities again, after a rather ‘rap with a capital C’ to quote one onlooker, debut, and Karl Lagerfeld is on some sort of mission to be branded the next Galliano (minus the racism), after unnecessarily mentioning one of fashion’s pet hates when talking about the ridiculously talented Adele: the ‘F’ word. Yes, the man at the helm of the intertwined C’s candidly called Adele ‘fat’ in an interview with the Metro newspaper, although he cleaned up his verbal vomit by adding she has a ‘beautiful face and a divine voice.’ In the real world, there is nothing untrue about Lagerfeld’s comments. Adele is a large lady. ‘Large’ can be taken as euphemism on my part, if you wish, but it doesn’t withdraw from the fact that Adele isn’t Alexa. On an equal footing, Adele’s weight doesn’t deduct a single scrap of talent from the phenomenally gifted young lady that she is. Tremendously admired either side of the pond, with global album sales in excess of 23.5 million; this immense affection for her arises from the simple fact that she can, with such ease, captivate an audience of thousands by appearing on stage with just a microphone and pianist in tow. That not a single special effect; vintage Versace body or pyrotechnic-laden spectaculars are needed to enhance what she has. She has it all. But it wasn’t labeling Adele ‘a little too fat’ that got my mind reeling, it was more the reaction afterwards. The Cut reported on designer Isaac Mizrahi’s unwavering defence of Lagerfeld’s comments, as the designer ran to […]

Fetishism’s were a seductively tantalising visual for autumn/winter 2011, as we saw designers so skilfully display the romanticised side of this extreme ‘sport’ into their collections. Sweet nothings were whispered at Christopher Kane, Dior and Louis Vuitton with delicate sheer inserts contrasted against stark black, whilst a lacier affair delighted at Lanvin and Antonio Berardi. But this bondage inspired look wouldn’t be complete without a touch of slick black PVC and leather as seen at Etro and Ralph Lauren. If innuendo were a dress, this would be it. Androgyny They may be impossible to live with, but the boys are being generous this season and letting us borrow from their wardrobes. Nothing brought a more mastered masculine touch than autumn/winter 2011’s softly-softly take on sharp tailoring. Injected with sexy, feminine accents in the form of sparkly trousers at Michael Kors and plunging necklines at Balmain and Chanel, tuxedos were the template. Totally transformed, with embellished lapels at Dolce & Gabbana; cropped tux jackets at The Row; rounded tailcoats at Moschino and a prevalently monochrome palette; this really is the best of both worlds.

Read MoreWho will replace Christophe Decarnin at Balmain?
This season is going to be remembered not for trends or style icons, but as the season of the great creative reshuffle. First Galliano was fired from Dior under the shadow of scandal, spelling rumours of a major swap-around in the luxury French fashion houses, and just yesterday it was announced that another of the greats has jumped ship as Christophe Decarnin parted ways with Balmain. The French designer, who joined the label in 2005, is widely credited as the strength behind Balmain, lifting both prices and designs to new heights, and inspiring Balmania among celebs and the fashion world with his fierce designs. Although his departure hasn’t attracted the same sense of shock as Galliano’s, rumours are rife as to what has prompted the split. Most sources suggest the designer’s recent absence from his AW11 show, blamed on exhaustion, was actually masking a deeper emotional health crisis. But it’s also possible that his leaving has a lot to do with creative differences between Decarnin and Balmain CEO Alain Hivelin (how many ripped tees and power leather can one really wear?), or that the designer’s enthusiasm was lost after unofficial Balmain ambassador and supportive friend Emmanuelle Alt left the brand to take the helm at Vogue Paris. Either way, there’s opening at Balmain for one of the biggest feats in fashion, and the question on everyone’s lips is who’s going to get it. We’ve highlighted the favourite front-runners for the job (and yes, the same names rumoured for Dior are cropping up here, too) – see below for the candidates tipped for the post. 1. Melanie Ward Who: Balmain’s stylist Why: Fashionista tips Ward as the most likely replacement. Following Emmanuelle Alt’s departure, über-stylist Ward stepped in to cover styling duties at Balmain, and was credited, albeit unofficially, with having […]

As Paris Fashion Week brought the month-long round of AW11 collections to an end, we’ve scoured through the shows to bring you a quick-fire round-up of our favourites from the City of Light. Take a look at our highlights from the sartorial proceedings in Paris below… Who: Alexander McQueen What: The collection, at times, maintained a softer silhouette than we’re used to from the house of McQueen, but once again Sarah Burton proved she knows what she’s doing with the label. With white tweed skirts, fur accents, opened pleats, grey separates, intricate suits, knitted fur detailing, raw chiffon frills, spray-on leather leggings, robotic bustiers, platform shoes and moulded silhouettes galore – this was yet another truly astounding collection, with McQueen’s signature style printed all over it. And the finale of wedding-esque dresses did nothing to dispel the Kate Middleton rumours. Who: Chanel What: Lagerfeld definitely celebrated International Women’s Day with his autumn/winter collection at Paris Fashion Week, and with raw silhouetted clothing making a profound impact on the catwalk, there was no denying the rough, tough and ready mood of the clothes: an abundance of boiler suits, cropped jackets, pleated trousers, tweed legwarmers, flat brogues and mannish ankle boots. Who: Louis Vuitton What: A quintessential collection of hotel uniform-inspired clothes, with patent leather jackets, sheer skirts exposing suspenders and bottom-revealing cashmere onesies completing the array of rule-breaking get-ups. Surprise appearances from Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss smoking stole the show. Who: Lanvin What: A collection of sophisticated silhouettes, with mustard and caramel draped fabric dresses aplenty. Who: Valentino What: A romantic collection of lace and cashmere, delicate jumpers and A-line dresses. Who: Miu Miu What: A statement collection of signature Sixites shapes, bold colour blocking and sparkly heels galore. Who: Givenchy What: A collection inspired by the Japanese kimono silhouette […]
Read MoreDerek Blasberg confirms Tisci for Dior via Twitter
It looks as if the gossip surrounding Riccardo Tisci – and whether or not this Italian designer will take the helm at Christian Dior – has just been kicked up a notch, as fashion editor, Derek Blasberg, revealed on Twitter last night that Tisci has definitely been confirmed for Dior. Whilst backstage at a Katy Perry concert, Blasberg tweeted: “I was just told backstage at the @KatyPerry concert (of all places!) that Riccardo Tisci is CONFIRMED at Dior. I leave #PFW for a second…” But with Tisci recently stating he was “happy at Givenchy,” the rumours continue to spiral on we’re afraid, with Style.com only adding yet more fire to the billowing flame of uncertainty over Twitter: “Not to add to the Dior rumor mill, but people in Paris are asking, why has the Lanvin team been in tears all day?” Could the Lanvin director, Alber Elbaz, still be in the running for the coveted scoop at Dior? It’s almost too much gossip for one to handle.

Read MoreWho will replace John Galliano?
So Galliano’s out. It’s a sad, sorry shame, but it was inevitable (and necessary) in light of his recent racist ramblings. Naturally, the fashion sphere has already begun speculating who’ll replace the enfant terrible – but let’s face it; those are some pretty big pirate boots to fill. With Dior standing by its schedule to show its autumn/winter 2011 collection at Paris Fashion Week on Friday, the pressure’s never been so high to perform – rumour has it some top editors are anxious of attending the house’s show because it’s been tainted with bad publicity – especially with the all-too realistic problem of poor sales looming. Suffice to say, we reckon Dior’s looking to find a new front (wo)man to direct its design pretty pronto, so let’s take a look at the names being thrown around already as possible replacements. 1. Riccardo Tisci Who: Riccardo Tisci, creative director at Givenchy Why: Riccardo Tisci has garnered increasing acclaim since heading Givenchy in 2005. He’s a design genius and he’s bold, but he’s also a safe bet, seeing as he’s already working within the LVMH staple (Givenchy belongs to the luxury conglomerate). And if you believe in history repeating itself, you’ll like this – Galliano was himself heading Givenchy before landing creative director at Dior. 2. Marc Jacobs Who: Marc Jacobs, creative director at Louis Vuitton as well as his eponymous empire Why: Louis Vuitton also lives under LVHM alongside Dior – if the powers that be want to keep it in the family, Marc could be in the running. Question is, is he ready to leave Louis Vuitton? 3. Phoebe Philo Who: Phoebe Philo, creative director at Celine Why: Another designer working under LVMH’s bracket, Celine is also owned by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy, making Phoebe Philo another close contender. But […]
Read MoreAnne Hathaway’s 8 Oscar dresses: which was best?
The pressures of hosting the Oscars – especially when you’re the youngest host in the awards’ history – must have got to Anne Hathaway’s wardrobe at the 83rd Academy Awards last night. With no less than eight outfit changes, she left little room for disappointment in the sartorial stakes, switching between a vintage Valentino here and an Aetelier Versace couture there thanks to Rachel Zoe’s styling assistance. Sure, she didn’t break barriers, but she name-dropped enough designers to be worthy of an Oscar herself. Here’s a breakdown of what she wore – let us know which look you loved best in the poll below. 1. Valentino Arriving on the arm of the designer, Anne arrived on the red carpet in a red Valentino gown – from the label’s couture archive, no less. 2. Givenchy Couture Taking to the stage to kick-start the ceremony, Anne chose an ivory chiffon gown with crystal embellishment by Givenchy Couture. 3. Lanvin From Goddess to guy, a quick change into a le smoking-style tuxe from Lanvin and crystal Brian Atwood pumps broke up Anne’s gaggle of gorgeous gowns (albeit briefly). 4. Vivienne Westwood Back to the ballgowns – Anne slipped into a black corset feather-printed tiered dress by Vivienne Westwood for her third look. 5. Oscar de la Renta He was missed on the red carpet last night, but Anne championed the iconic American designer in a metallic gold form-fitting dress with flapper-style fringing (which she demonstrated with a shimmy). 6. Atelier Versace Back to red – this time wine coloured – in a strapless floor-length gown with embellishment across the bodice by Aetelier Versace 7. Armani Prive Swapping shimmer for simplicity, Anne changed into a gloss-finished cobalt blue column dress by Armani Prive for her penultimate look. 8. Tom Ford In the ultimate show-stopper, […]

Read MoreSS11 trend recap: plisse pleats and sheer lace delight
It’s Friday, and we’re in love. Yes, we do happen to be listening to the Cure, but Robert Smith’s not the only romantic round here – where spring’s concerned, romance is rife. To mark the last day in our SS11 trend recaps, we’re embracing next season’s ethereal edge and looking to pretty ballerina-inspired pleats and lashings of peek-a-boo lace to get us through the afternoon with sheer sweet delight. Plisse pleats L-R: Chloe, Lanvin, Richard Nicoll From skater to box to plisse, pleats rule the roost this spring. The perfect lightweight finish to full, floaty skirts, look for flippy shapes that skim the knee, mid-lengths that swing at your calves, or long lines that sweep the floor for full-on romance . Take sartorial inspiration from Chloe‘s soft ballet-inspired skirts, Lanvin‘s billowing leg-flashers and Richard Nicoll‘s pretty pleated playsuits. Sheer lace delight L-R: Erdem, Dolce & Gabbana, Christopher Kane If it’s worth seeing next spring, it’s worth seeing through. Lace is back for SS11, but its delight this time around is in its sheer diversity – quite literally. From frilly white shirt dresses at Erdem to stunning floor-sweeping wedding cast-offs at Dolce & Gabbana, lace embraces next season’s luxe romantic feel with an etheral edge. Looking to offset the girliness? Get your direction from Christopher Kane, who balanced feminine shapes with popping acid neons. [Images: Style.com]

Read MoreGolden Globes 2011: worst dressed
You’ve seen the sartorial highs from last night’s 68th Golden Globe Awards, now it’s time for the ones you’ve all been waiting for – the downright disasters. From the all-too-familiar faces to the un-stylish surprises, cue the giggles and gasps as we reveal the worst dressed celebs on yesterday’s red carpet… There’s just no saving Jennifer Love Hewitt (above) from this awful pale blue oversized origami Romona Keveza dress – the colour and stiff structure just don’t cut the sartorial mustard on Jen. Despite most of Twitter raving over this, words fail us when it comes to Halle Berry’s Nina Ricci netted LBD – perhaps someone should tell her she’s not cat Woman any more. We’ve come to expect nothing less than English eccentricity from Helena Bonham Carter, but it looks as though Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter has rubbed off all too much on the actress in this mixed-print net-skirted Vivienne Westwood dress, Lennon shades and mis-matched shoes. Shame neither of them matched her dress. Christina Aguilera hasn’t been scoring all that highly in the style stakes lately, and unless she was trying to look like a mermaid, we’re sorry to say this Zuhair Murad frock hasn’t helped her much. Another miss for designer Zuhair Murad, who doesn’t seem to be having much luck at the this year’s Golden Globes – just look at this whiter-than-white wedding-inspired gown Jennifer Lopez wore on the night, complete with a diamond-encrusted cape. Always one to break the mould, Tilda Swinton‘s efforts to do things differently in new-season Jil Sander didn’t pay off this time – the lemon skirt and crisp white shirt looks awkward on the androgynous actress. Last but not least is (regrettably) American actress Julianne Moore – who made quite the fashion faux pax in this ill-fitting one-puff-sleeved Lanvin dress – […]
