Oh yes, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration is finally here! It doesn’t just mean an extra day off for us (love you, Lizzie!)… it means celebrating all things British – with a splash of indulgence thrown in there for good measure. Plus, it’s a great rehearsal for getting into the patriotic spirit for the Olympics in a few months!

Here at My Fashion Life, we love to advocate new and exciting fashion talent. Looking to the next crop of individuals set to amass a strong fashion following is thrilling, and the fresh design ideas they reflect are a realisation that inspiration can be acquired from absolutely anywhere. Such is the case of print artist and fashion designer Gemma Land, who, after graduating with an MA in Fine Art Photography from the London College of Communication, has gone onto impress the fashion set with her individual take on scarf printing. Having already been awarded the Wolf & Badger Graduate Design Award in 2011 and the Creative Archive Award in 2010, it was the latter that helped kick start Gemma’s design career by launching her debut collection ‘Bourgeois Utopias’ at London and Paris fashion week. Her work was picked up by the industry and featured by coveted publications such as Dazed, Digital Huffington Post and Russian Vogue. For her second collection of photographic silk scarves, ‘The Strawberry Hill Collection’, Gemma took literal inspiration from Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham, South London. Emblazoned across the silk scarves in monochrome and colour print, the ‘hallucinogenic’ representation of the stark white Gothic revival dwelling brings a beautifully eerie quality to her work. Speaking exclusively to My Fashion Life about her forthcoming autumn/winter collection, Gemma revealed she would be working with wool for the first time, alongside silk. “The collection prints are inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s novel, The Fall of the House of Usher”, she added. Props to Gemma, because we can certainly picture ourselves swathed gloriously in a silken, picturesque Gothic building! And as for her next collection, we can expect some arresting and somewhat haunting imagery translated into something beautiful. The Strawberry Hill Collection is currently available to purchase online at Avenue32.com or […]

Read MoreRate or Slate: Olivia Palermo in Zara, Paris Hilton in Alice + Olivia and Jaime Winstone in Giles
We’ve got quite the mix of style for this week’s Rate or Slate! Naturally, a little Coachella fashion has been thrown into the mix, alongside what we saw on the red carpet. Ever the indecisive lot, we’re having a little situation with making our minds up on this week’s starlets. Olivia Palermo wore a Zara ensemble to the ‘Safe’ New York Premiere, and chose to recycle some instantly recognisable accessories, including an insanely beautiful vintage Hermes clutch. Extrovert socialite, Paris Hilton, wore her colourful personality in skirt form, as she channelled a boho vibe by opting for the printed Shannon skirt by Alice + Oliva as one of her many Coachella outfits. Teaming with a white bandeau top and fringed statement necklace, Paris’s outfit sure turned heads. Jaime Winstone appeared on the red carpet in an interesting Giles number for the premiere of her latest film, ‘Elfie Hopkins’. Sporting a shaved head as part of her latest role as a soldier in the new series of Mad Dogs, we’re not sure what we think of her latest avatar. It’s over to our discerning Style Jury… Fashion News Ed says: ParisHilton: ‘I know Paris always does this look, but as she does it so well, I can’t really complain. She totally embraced the Coachella theme! Insanely jealous of those rock hard abs, too.’ Olivia Palermo: ‘Olivia is my fave; she hardly ever puts a foot wrong and this is no exception. The accessorising is perfect too… such a babe, as always!’ Jaime Winstone: ‘On first glance, Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress came to mind… There’s nothing wrong with Jaime’s dress per se, I think it’s just a bit ill-fitting and doesn’t really do her any favours. I’ve seen better from her!’ You say: ‘Olivia Palermo is always the best! She is […]
Read MoreBest Dressed of the Week: Diane Kruger in Derek Lam at the Paris Premiere of Les Adieux à la Reine
It doesn’t take much for this fashion darling to make it onto Best Dressed lists the blogosphere, even the fashion world over. Always immaculately presented; her petite frame has shown off many a drool-worthy designer dress before, and this time round she’s won us over with a very delicious offering from next season. Not that we mere mortals can even get a look in until a further six months down the line; Diane Kruger sported a Derek Lam Fall 2012 black and white printed dress with an embroidered red and black collar at the Paris premiere for her latest film Les Adieux à la Reine (Farewell My Queen), (out March 21). Catwalk preppy cool at its best! Although she skipped a season with her dress choice, Diane completed her look with pumps from Versus Spring 2012 collection pumps, and a delectably summery, wispy side swept do. A muted red on her nails matched the warmth of the red embroidery on her collar, whist her makeup took a neutral direction. One never to stylistically disappoint Diane’s Derek Lam choice was a fun-filled glimpse into next season; a serious colour pallet infused with the print fun and frivolity of spring/summer. Major nods of approval at My Fashion Life HQ!

Kanye West returns to Paris Fashion Week Yes! And how hotly anticipated his return is at My Fashion Life HQ, we can’t even begin to tell you. We love a little stir in the fashion cauldron every now and then, and a stir follows wherever controversial hip hop mogul West goes. After a questionable debut last season in Paris, Kanye West is set to shut critics’ mouths by showcasing a second round of his sartorial ‘skills’ on Tuesday. Let’s hope this time the collection is editorial-worthy and doesn’t end up being ‘rap with a capital C.’ Ouch. Lana Del Rey’s wardrobe woes Her voice mesmerises us, but her dress sense is cringes-worthy. It is intolerable. After seeing a picture of Lana arriving at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont sporting her namesake Mulberry bag and wearing a white ruffled dress teamed with unflattering Adidas trainers, we needed a moment to contemplate this style monstrosity. Why Lana?! The Video Games singer clearly needs a lesson in how to channel this season’s athletic trend the right way. Jamie Hince feels ‘awkward’ at fashion shows Kate Moss’s rocker husband squirms in his seat when on the FROW watching what are the best moments in fashion unfold before his eyes. Sat next to his wife – who happens to be the world’s most recognised face – Jamie isn’t too fond of this liberty. We just think your being ungrateful, Mr. Hince. After all, the runway is where your wife made her millions, and quite frankly, we’d give an arm, leg and organ to rub shoulders front row with fashion royalty. There, we said it. Read MoreMonday Musings: The things rattling our fashion brains on the hardest day of the week
The things were mulling over this morning at My Fashion Life HQ…. Hedi Slimane to replace Stefano Pilati at YSL It’s the classic will he, won’t he situation, and annoyingly took over this fashion weekend in Milan. It’s the fashion we’re here for, not the design house politics! Suzy Menkes put forward a thoroughly exciting piece on the current situation surrounding designer dismissals and admissions; although, we must say how super sad we were to see the uber-talented Raf Simons wave a teary goodbye during his final bow at the Jil Sander show on Saturday. Rigorous reporting Oscars – THE OUTFITS! Yes, you guessed it. Forget who won what, its more who wore what! We can’t wait to read the opinion outpour on who chose to destroy their chances of a sartorial trophy, and who naturally won, again. We’ll be a part of that outpour, too. More of Lupo the royal pup – limelight stealer! Finally, we have someone else upping Kate Middleton in the camera hogging stakes, as the royal couple’s adorable four-month-old cocker spaniel had his first outing in Kensington Gardens, last week. We’re a nation of pet-lovers, as well as obsessive Kate-Mid fanatics, so we’d rather see more of the pair, together, obviously. As per Kate’s usual website crashing antics post public appearance, we suspect a hike in Lupo named pets. We’re hyperventilating over the Marni x H&M lookbook – complete with prices! Prints galore and at price tags we just can’t argue with. If high fashion could fall straight from the catwalk, then the Marni x H&M collection is it. The new look book featuring the entire collection complete with prices is a dream. Coming true on March 8. Paris Fashion Week. That is all. The last day of an opulent Milan Fashion Week is upon us today, […]

Read More2011 in news: 10 things that shook the fashion world this year
Among the clinking glasses of endless mulled wine toasts, pre-Christmas mince pies and secret peeling of presents under the Christmas tree, there’s just one more thing left to do this year: reminisce. 2011 has been a significant year for the fashion world. Craze-inducing collaborations, a royal wedding remembered more for the dress than the extra public holiday and fashion losses so large the entire industry collectively wept. And what have we done with all that? Rounded it up, of course. Below, we bring you fashion’s best and most moments shocking of 2011. 1. The royal wedding dress April 29th will forever be marked in our minds as a date that made unparalleled fashion history. Alexander McQueen’s creative head, Sarah Burton, was spotted entering the Goring Hotel merely hours before the royal wedding took place, sparking rumours she’d designed the dress. Indeed, she was bestowed with this burdensome duty and boy, did she deliver! The exquisite appliquéd lace dress acquired Burton deserved acclaim in the fashion world, culminating in an unsurprisingly big win at the British Fashion Awards last month. A big year for Sarah Burton – an even bigger year for fashion. 2. John Galliano – Dismissal from Dior and namesake label Probably the most gulp-inducing, tear-jerking headline to emerge from the fashion world this year was the dismissal of Dior design master, John Galliano. Arrested in a Parisian cafe after allegedly assaulting and racially abusing a couple using anti-Semitic remarks, the allegations against the couture creator were all founded in court, resulting in his rapid fall though the echelons of the very industry that homed him. His immediate suspension from Dior, and later from his namesake label, sparked an emotional outcry amongst Galliano’s closest industry friends. Whilst the hunt for his replacement is said to be in its final […]

Could the next London Fashion Week in February be the best one ever? Just yesterday, we announced that Stella McCartney would be coming home to hold a fashion presentation during London Fashion Week, and today another fashion house has revealed that it is bringing one of its brands to London. For the first time since the brand launched, Alexander McQueen will be showcasing its younger McQ collection with a catwalk presentation during London Fashion Week, although the mainline collection will continue to show at Paris Fashion Week. The catwalk show will coincide with the McQ flagship store that is due to open in London’s Mayfair (at 14 Dover Street, to be exact) in the spring. A four storey Georgian townhouse – with 273 square metres of retail space – has been transformed to house the collection which offers womenswear, menswear and accessories.

Read MoreWhat we really thought of Kanye West’s first fashion collection
I must admit that, perhaps unlike others, when I first heard Kanye West was launching a womenswear line, I was rather excited. Not excited in the way that Miu Miu’s glitter boots send me into total sartorial meltdown, or in the same way that the fashion world is waiting to hear who’s replacing Galliano, but in a way that I’m utterly intrigued and entertained by the idea that a jumped-up hip hop star who likes floor-length fur coats and excessive bling could make a go of it in another competitive creative industry. Of course I had my doubts – one only has to look at Lindsay Lohan’s disastrous streak at Emanuel Ungaro to see that celebrity lines are ill-fated – but I also had hopes of having another Victoria Beckham surprise that sent the industry spinning on the very tables it turns on. And so it was that Kanye West presented his first fashion collection at Paris Fashion Week on Saturday. He chose Lycée Henri IV, the prestigious public secondary school in the capital’s Latin quarter, to debut his designs, and invited an impressive list of no more than 100 guests who would sit on two single rows either side of the runway. For all Kanye’s egotistical ways, it was a humble beginning to his career in fashion, and had his collection lived up to the calibre of its high-profile audience – Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Alexander Wang, Ciara and the Olsen twins all sat front row – this could have been quite the fashion moment. Unfortunately, Kanye’s collection was everything it shouldn’t have been, but it wasn’t without effort. The hip-hop star – a regular fashion front-rower and fan, let’s not forget – seeked advice from London designer Louise Goldin after his attempt to enrole at Central Saint Martins […]
Read MoreHow many suitcases does Rachel Zoe need for Paris?
Apparently Rachel Zoe doesn’t take too well to packing lightly, if this picture of her poor hubby pulling along a whole trailer of luggage on arrival in Paris is anything to go by. Paris Fashion Week does, of course, require a more discerning approach to packing, but 11 bags and suitcases and two Louis Vuitton duffel bags for one week’s stay in the city is excessive by anyone’s standards. “Final stop..Paris via Eurostar train..@rbermanus is hating me right now..xoRZ,” Zoe tweeted at the weekend. Yes, let’s look at Berman, who through gritted teeth is probably wishing he didn’t marry a super-stylist-cum-designer right now. Still, just think of all the outfits in there! The ridiculously high heels! The fierce faux fur! We’ll recap just what she assembled from her baggage soon. [Styleite]

Read MoreLondon Fashion Week SS12: Paul Costelloe
Who: Paul Costelloe What: 1960’s Paris – swing dresses, voluminous silhouettes and youthful elegance. Pieces punctuated with luxurious layers of fabric, especially silk, are given extra life with tailored flirty frills. The palette remains neutral, often pearly, but is punched with coral, pink and mint green for Parisian edge. Highlights: teeny-tiny babydoll dresses, balloon sleeves and skirted dresses, button-up skirt suits, and a Sixties belted shirt dress. Lowlights: fussy frills and ruffles became repetitive and, at times, overpowering. Overall: If sticking to a theme like glue sticks to paper was his aim, Paul Costelloe certainly deserves a medal next season. For spring, his girl has a taken a decidedly youthful turn, played out in feminine, flowing dresses with flirty touches. The Sixties Hollywood classic, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, was Costelloe’s inspiration, and it’s evident in Sixties babydoll dresses, some high-necked with exaggerated puff sleeves and others scooping softly lower. Elements of vintage Parisian style seep through, most notably in coral and mint metallic splashes, but the palette remained unashamedly neutral, with pearly whites and creams taking centre stage. It’s elegant, innocent and shamefully pretty, but with enough frills to fill a frou-frou wedding, it errs a little too far on the sweet side. Watch Paul Costelloe’s spring/summer 2012 below:

If you didn’t know Paris was the style capital of the world, you could have made a darn good guess after Beyonce’s visit last week. On a brief break in the City of Light with hubby Jay-Z, the couple made more than their fair share of rare public appearances doing regular things like eating and shopping, but they mixed it with some irregular stuff that only the rich can do like wear a different designer outfit every day from collections that aren’t even available yet and pose for upcoming issues of fashion glossies (she’s wearing Gucci for Harper’s Bazaar above, FYI). Good old Bey, when she’s back, she sure as hell lets you know it. See below for five of the fab outfits she showcased on her trip, and tell us which is your favourite look in the poll below. Isabel Marant AW10 We already raved about Beyonce’s printed silk dress from Isabel Marant’s AW10 collection, which she expertly paired with McQueen fishbone platforms and a black crocodile Balmain bag, but it’s well worth a second mention here. Roland Mouret Next outing, next outfit, this time a black dungaree romper by Roland Mouret teamed with artfully messy hair and a pair of strappy platforms for a chic stroll along the streets. Marc Jacobs AW11 Taking a decidedly lady-like direction, Bey opted for a green and red polka dot dress from Marc Jacobs’ AW11 collection to celebrate Easter, this time swapping statement footwear for a pair of classic Louboutin pumps and her trusty Balmain bag. Isabel Marant AW11 Another look from Isabel Marant, this time a dusty pink leather jacket from the French label’s AW11 collection that she teamed with casual cargo shorts and those Daffodil Louboutins for a sleek everyday look (save the 6.5 inch heels). Balmain Probably our least […]

Hello, who is this hot honey blonde we see? Why, it’s only Beyonce! Despite the odd appearance at a basketball game, Beyonce’s largely steered clear of the spotlight for some time, but we for one are super pleased to see she’s back and looking better than ever. Showing off her newly blonde locks, she left restaurant L’Avenue at the Meurice Hotel in Paris with husband Jay-Z last week looking utterly fabulous. We love her sexy draped printed dress complete with waist cinching black sash and matching crock handbag. She chose gold sandals that perfectly complimented her honey coloured skin and the metallic flashes in the dress – and, of course, no celeb outfit is complete with the obligatory pair of sunglasses. And judging by the size of that rock on her left hand, things are still go swimmingly with her hunky hubby. Good to have you back, B! [poll id=”95″]

Read MoreJohn Galliano was absent from his presentation in Paris
After John Galliano was fired from his creative director post at Christian Dior last week for making anti-Semitic remarks, it was unsure whether or not the designer’s own AW11 collection – owned by Dior parent company LVMH – would go ahead at Paris Fashion Week or not. In the end, company executives decided on a low-key event, and held the small scale presentation at a townhouse in Paris’ moneyed Avenue Foch, where just 19 looks were showcased to press and buyers. The show itself was a somewhat sorry affair, and with Galliano understandably absent from the proceedings, the viewing was accompanied by music from Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and Coldplay’s Viva La Vida, with lyrics such as ‘We could have had it all’ and ‘I used to rule the world’ adding to the somber mood of it all. The models were dressed in signature Galliano gowns, with layered tweed jackets, pared-down pencil skirts, pleated sundresses, fur trimmed parkas and floral centrepieces – all finished off with distinctive bow shaped lipstick and dark smoky eyes, reports The Daily Mail. The New York Times shared this view on the show, adding, “typically Galliano, [a] mix of romantic dresses, a loosely draped mint kimono with black lace appliqué, a black vinyl trench and a silk halter dress.” But with Galliano now rumoured to be in rehab in Arizona, his future – and his brand’s – still seems an undecided one. See the looks from what might be his final collection below…
