British Fashion Awards 2010: what they wore

The fashionistas were out in full force last night as London’s Savoy Hotel and Theatre played host to this year’s British Fashion Awards – and boy did the stars dress to impress. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our pick of the crème de la crème of last night’s best dressed. First up is Naomi Campbell who wore a stunning full length black sheer gown, complete with matching faux fur shrug – all courtesy of close friend Alexander McQueen; an honouring tribute to the late fashion designer who died in February this year. Following in the British fashion footsteps was young Hollywood starlet Emma Roberts in a fun and flirty Julien McDonald party frock – the youthful black and blue glitzy design proved an utterly perfect choice for the little star. Picking up the British Style Award on the night was the ever fashionable Alexa Chung, wearing an SS11 pastel pink Chanel frock with ostrich feather trim – Ms. Chung certainly proved her style credentials were worthy of recognition. Top models were also undoubtedly dressed to perfection, with Lara Stone in Calvin Klein, Claudia Schiffer in Mary Katrantzou and the gorgeous Daisy Lowe in a gothic Elie Saab number – it just goes to show Britain certainly knows how to create some serious sartorial statements. Last but not least, and possibly our favourite of them all, is the beautiful Victoria Beckham wearing one of her own designs to last night’s fashion Oscars – the first of which she’s been nominated for. The highly-praised fashion designer has come a long way since her former Spice Girl days, wouldn’t you agree? So well done ladies, here’s to an super stylish 2010 – all we can say now is roll on next year.

Round the table with Henry Holland and Gemma Cairney

As you well know, here at MFL we’re rather partial to a fashion TV series or two, and none more so than Frock Me with TK Maxx, back on TV screens in the UK for a second series to brighten up the bleakest Sunday mornings. Hosted by super-style icon Alexa Chung, London designer Henry Holland and Radio 1 style expert Gemma Cairney, Frock Me follows fashion through its rampant relationship with music as it highlights top trends for the season, chats to the very best in the business, gives DIY styling tips, and shows you how people on the street are working – and styling – the season’s best trends… in a nutshell. Naturally, we were obliged to catch up with Henry and Gemma when TK Maxx invited us to London’s Zetter hotel last week where, alongside a few other bloggers, we quizzed the pair on all things Frock Me and fashion. We’ve seen three shows so far, can you tell us what we can expect from the rest of the series? HH: There’s a show about romance, there’s a show about Americana, there’s a show about festivals; so there’s those theme-shows, and you can expect to see Sophie Ellis-Bextor, you can expect to see Gabriella Cilmi, we’ve had the Future Heads, Marina and the Diamonds, Paloma Faith – she was good, and everyone did live too. And then there’s some very ridiculous sketches… GC: We’ve got prints in Bristol [just aired] which was fun, I actually put a couple up against each other for the Frock Off, and the girl really looks like Alexa so that was good. And then we’ve got in Birmingham Americana – we ended up with about 200 people surrounding us in the middle of town for the final section, so we were kind of […]

The beauty trends you need to know about

Want to know what products you should invest in and what styles will be big in make-up and hair this year? Because we’re so lovely, we’ve asked the experts on your behalf. From petal coloured lips, to sharp 90s style bobs, get ready for the key trends of 2010. Make-up Seen on the catwalk and on the red carpet throughout 2009, the trend for bold, statement lips has a couple of months left to run yet. So be brave, says Nadin Eule-Mau, global PR and marketing manager for Rouge Bunny Rouge. . “We will see strong lips for which a long-lasting lip liner is a must. Different colours of expressive lips allow everyone to find the right look for example sheer damson, light orange, pale carnation pink or pure true red. But heading into Spring/Summer more muted tones are set to take centre stage according to Revlon. “Spring/ Summer 2010 sees make-up take a step away from the 80s influence we have seen over the past few seasons and instead take on a softer, fresher approach with more of a nod to the 60s with beautiful pastels, nude tone lips and lashings of mascara, says Petros Petrohilos who did the make-up look for the Sass&Bide show during London Fashion week in September. That means lashings of mascara, brown eyeshadow (oh yes, it’s back in a big way), nude or coral lip colours and natural skin. Watch out for a new lilac shade nail polish and Peach Petal lipgloss from Revlon in March. Robin Narvaez, makeup artist at leading salon, Salon Eliut Rivera in New York says there will also be a trend for poppy colours such as pink and orange from March onwards. “For March, April and May bright pinks work best on lips paired with kohl rimmed eyes, getting […]

Kimberley Walsh for New Look

Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh is following in the footsteps of fellow band member Cheryl Cole by fronting a campaign for high street chain New Look, which debuts this week. The singer was snapped up for the deal after New Look asked its online community members who their modern style icons were. No surprises for who ran away with the title, then. According to Marie Claire, readers picked Kimberley for her “real figure” and because she’s the “girl that girls love”. In her first solo modelling gig, Kimberley dazzles in a lace figure-hugging dress that shows off her womanly curves, as well as working her girl-next-door style in checked shirts and jeans. It may not be as up-market as Cheryl’s £500,000 deal with fashion house L’Oreal, but we think Kimberley will do wonders for the store, whose previous campaigns have included Lily Allen and Alexa Chung. Perhaps this is another step towards fashion brands using more curvaceous models, too. Let’s hope so. [Images]

Steep vs Cheap: Ray-Ban or Topshop?

Summer is finally upon us and that means we get to adorn the best sun-induced accessory, sunglasses. Definitely a girls best friend, you don’t need to worry about growing out of them or trying to squeeze into that smaller size, they will always fit just perfect and go with every outfit. The only problem is that you have to decide upon a style, my favourite will always be the wayfarer. A style that seems season-less. Seen year after year on our favourite celebs, already this season they have been spotted on the faces of Alexa Chung, Lindsey Lohan and Chloe Sevigny. The brand that made them famous of course is Ray Ban and the above are fabulous.

Yves Saint Laurent’s was very sleek , big in the shoulder, narrow in the hips – paired over a miniskirt. Ralph Lauren grounded a floaty chiffon evening dress by topping it of with a boyfriend blazer while Hussein Chalayan paired his with nothing but boots.
