There was so much action on the Golden Globes red carpet at the weekend that we didn’t even have time to get to the after-party outfits – shame o0n us! Luckily we’ve dedicated this afternoon to celebrating the stars who rocked up to the Warner Brothers and InStyle Golden Globe Awards after-party, and more importantly what they chose to wear for the occasion. The young Hollywood stars once again pulled out all the stops, with Disney princesses Ashley Tisdale, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens going for very different but equally ravishing designer dresses. Ashley was demure, chic and understated in her stunning floor-length Issa gown, Vanessa upped the sparkle factor with her Jenny Packham dress, while Selena Gomez flashed the pins in an Atelier Versace creation. Just goes to show that there’s more than one way to interpret the after-party dress code successfully! Despite more fun and flirty dresses making an appearance, long gowns were still out in force, with Miranda Kerr looking like a sexy scarlet screen siren in her plunging Zuhair Murad dress, while Bond girl Berenice Marlohe floated along the red carpet in a Monique Lhuillier dress from the new aquatic inspired collection. Take a look at a select few of our best-dressed celebs who partied the night away in style: Miranda Kerr in Zuhair Murad Ashley Tisdale in Issa Selena Gomez in Atelier Versace Vanessa Hudgens in Jenny Packham Berenice Marlohe in Monique Lhuillier Kate Bekinsale in Gucci Jessica Alba in Louis Vuitton Nikki Reed in Jenni Kayne Who gets your vote? PPR buys 51% stake in Christopher Kane
There have been rumours about the future of Christopher Kane floating around the blogosphere for quite some time now, but it’s now been officially confirmed that French luxury multinational company PPR has bought a majority stake (51%) in the Scottish designer’s brand. “We are very excited and honoured to be partnering with PPR for the next stage of development for our brand,” Christopher Kane said. “PPR has an incredible reputation for building some of the very best luxury brands in the world. They respect our creative vision and they have the expertise and experience to help us build the Christopher Kane brand globally.” The Christopher Kane brand now joins the likes of Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Stella McCartney, so it’s safe to say the brand in safe hands and in good company. Both PPR and Mr Kane seem to be pretty pleased with the new deal, so we’re quite excited to see how things will develop over the next few seasons. Watch this space! [Vogue]
Read More10 evening gowns that’d be perfect for the Golden Globes or the Oscars!
The turn of the year marks the beginning of a rather exciting period in the celebville calendar: awards season. With the Golden Globes merely days away, and the Oscars (gasp!) taking place next month, our imagination is running wild thinking about the potential sartorial choices the leading ladies of Hollywood will make. Read More“For me, darkness is something very beautiful,” Riccardo Tisci, GQ
GQ’s Designer of the Year is a pretty prestigious title, which is why it doesn’t go to just anyone. This year, the lucky and very worthy recipient is 38-year-old Riccardo Tisci, who boasts the complete reinvention of Givenchy on his CV among other impressive things. “When Tisci came to the label in 2005, there was almost no menswear line to speak of,” the article reads. “Today the segment accounts for about 30 percent of its business, and “boring” is not a word that comes to mind. “Tisci almost instantly brought to Givenchy what Tom Ford once brought to Gucci and Hedi Slimane to Dior: a money-minting black box of creative energy and social capital that’s as enigmatic as it is lucrative, and built in part on his personal reputation.” The article is a must-read, as it shines some light into the world of Riccardo Tisci with some great observations from the author and some wonderful quotes from the main man himself. Ps: if you want to do some more fashion reading by the fire this weekend (cup of hot chocolate encouraged but not essential) then check out this Dirty Pretty Things article by International Herald Tribune editor Suzy Menkes. A great read about some of the big players in fashion from the likes of Alber Elbaz to John Galliano and more.
Read MoreJessica Chastain is dreamy in Dior for Marie Claire US December
Marie Claire is seriously on fire this month, rounding off another great year of magazine covers with a killer December issue featuring Jessica Chastain. Nicole Scherzinger stunned on the UK cover that we showed you last week, and now Jessica Chastain is doing her part for the Stateside version, striking a fierce pose in a hot pink Christian Dior Haute Couture dress. Jessica strikes us as a cool and very grounded actress, which is definitely confirmed in the accompanying interview where she tells the mag how her successful career hasn’t changed her lifestyle… “I always supported myself through acting and would make money last a long time,” she said. “I understand the value of money, and I’m not an impulsive buyer. I bought a new laptop three years ago, and before I bought it, I spent a month thinking about buying it. “So my lifestyle hasn’t changed, except my anxiety about paying the rent is gone.” And don’t forget being able to wear Couture, Jess! You can read the rest of Jessica’s interview – where she also opens up about the subject of men – and see more stunning pics in the December issue of Marie Claire US. [Images]
Read MoreVictoria Beckham, Mulberry and more create this year’s Designer Pudsey Bears for Children in Need
It doesn’t seem like a whole year since a host of famous faces and designers created their own Pudsey Bear for Children in Need, does it? Nevertheless, it’s that time of year again, and this time the likes of Alexander McQueen, Mulberry, Victoria Beckham, Burberry, Giles, Henry Holland and our very own fashion Bible British Vogue have all designed their own version of the iconic toy. British Vogue’s Pudsey is made up of some of the most recent as well as some of the most iconic, covers in British Vogue history, with some of the cover stars including Rihanna, Kate Moss, Rachel Weisz, Freja Beha Erichsen, Cheryl Cole, Lana Del Rey, and Emma Watson among others. See how many you can spot! A few of our other favourites include Burberry, Gucci (who ran with the equestrian theme) and Victoria Beckham (who went with a very feminine make-over for Pudsey). We think little Harper will love him! All of the Designer Pudsey bears will be available to view in Selfridges from tomorrow until November 14th, when they will then be auctioned off for Children in Need. Which one is your favourite? Read MoreMilan Fashion Week SS13 kicks off
Now that London Fashion Week is over – we have bittersweet emotions about it, if we’re being honest – we can return to absorbing the spring/summer 2013 collections from the comfort of the office chair – no high heels required! Milan Fashion Week is truly where the luxury starts, and the beginning of this season was no exception. MFW had barely begun before the big guns were out in force and the likes of Gucci, MaxMara, Alberta Ferretti and Emporio Armani showcased their collections on the lavish Italian runways. None of this save the best til last nonsense, it’s all go from the get go in Milan! Gucci hit the nail on the head and went back to basics for spring/summer 2013… who knew bold, vivid, block colour could be so effective in making a statement? While we’re not sure which pieces Blake Lively (the new face of the brand) would wear, we think she’d give everything a pretty good go… after all, she has the potential to make anything work for her. We’re looking forward to red carpet events of the future to see how the famous faces will style their new-season Gucci should they be lucky enough to get their hands on it. Over at Alberta Ferretti, the models walked out in aquatic inspired garments against a sea-like backdrop. Monique Lhuillier also went for an under the sea theme for her SS13 collection which she showed during New York Fashion Week, so it’s safe to say we’ve stumbled upon one of the key trends of the new season. We’ve always been a fan of mermaid chic (blame Disney’s Ariel) so it should come as no surprise to learn that we are all over Alberta Ferretti’s theme too. It was layer central over at Emporio Armani – and what interesting […]
Read More6 celebrity style icons worthy of their own clothing label
There is a long list of contemporary stylish ladies who are equally as eye catching as the Hepburn’s, Kelly’s and Monroe’s of yesteryear. These ladies have an ‘until death do us part’ kinda relationship with fashion, and their extensive wardrobes, impeccable taste and dedication to looking stylish knows no bounds. So to celebrate the women at the fore of fashionable happenings and their enviable sense of style, we’ve decided to chart our top 6 style icons… Rihanna We think RiRi’s sartorial reputation precedes her. Yes, she has a penchant for expletive-laden footwear (cue: X Factor performance in those trainers), wearing clothes emblazoned with illegal substances and often pushes the limits of fashion to an unimaginable edge, but she never fails to carry off her eccentric wardrobe. High Street, high fashion our outrageously high heels worn with leather shorts; she really is the only girl in the world who can execute it with perfection! Fave 2012 fashion moment: In Givenchy Haute Couture at the 2012 BRIT Awards, Olivia Palermo Gracing front row at headline-hitting fashion shows; girlfriend to a HOT model and the owner of a wardrobe over spilling with sartorial perfection, Olivia Palermo is a no-brainer on our Style Icons list! The flawless beauty, who fronts the cover of the Instyle UK October issue, revealed she likes ‘walking out of the house feeling fully pulled together.’ Something she sure has down to a t! The queen of nonchalant off-duty dressing (she even makes dog walking look stylish!), Olivia is often spotted in impeccable style staples, including a well cut jacket, a statement (not ‘It’) bag and wow-inducing heels. Olivia’s timeless style is easy to translate, and appeals to a wider population – a large chunk of which definitely likes to look fashionably ‘pulled together’. Fave 2012 fashion moment: Rocking the peplum trend […]
Read MoreBlake Lively wore Marchesa down the aisle!
The only thing more shocking than discovering Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds got married in secret at the weekend was learning who designed her wedding dress. The blushing bride wore neither Chanel nor Gucci and actually went for a custom Marchesa gown instead – designed exclusively for her by Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig. Who would have thunk it? According to British Vogue, the new Mrs Reynolds wore a one-of a-kind Couture bridal ballgown with a hand-draped silk tulle bodice covered in crystals and rose gold embroidery. We need a pic… like, now! We’re not betting people, but would have wagered serious money that Blake would have glided down the aisle in a bespoke Chanel or Gucci number. Blake and Kaiser Karl have been friends for what seems like forever, and she is of course the face of Gucci’s new fragrance so they seemed like the obvious choices. Still, it wasn’t all shock-factor, as Blake reportedly wore a pair of her BFF Christian Louboutin’s shoes under her gown. And yes, he was invited to the wedding too! As for Ryan and the rest of the boys, reports are suggesting that they all wore Burberry suits custom made for them by Christopher Bailey! Are you still shocked Blake is now a married woman? [Image]

Read MoreHarper’s Bazaar UK celebrates the model as Joan Smalls and Laetitia Casta cover October issue
As much as we love the hottest celebs on the front covers of magazines (Kristen Stewart on the front of October’s British Vogue is a prime example) we get stupidly excited when the mags go back to their roots and stick the models on the front covers too. We really commend Harper’s Bazaar UK’s decision to put not one, but two models on the October cover – and those models are none other than the wonderful Joan Smalls and Laetitia Casta. Two stunning ladies in their own right who showcase the respective rising and existing talent of the modelling world. Both girls get a lot of attention inside the mag too, with their own editorial pictures and interviews, so it really is a two for the price of one deal. We couldn’t possibly choose a favourite so we think we might close our eyes and do a lucky dip when it comes down to picking one up in the shops. Which one are you drawn to?
Read MoreThe Fash-off! Charlotte Casiraghi vs Hayley Atwell
It’s business as usual on Planet Celebrity as the stars have been bending over backwards with their red carpet sartorial efforts. And this week’s Fash-off has us torn between two shades of blue on two stunning ladies. Charlotte Casiraghi, granddaughter of Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, (in case you were wondering, y’know) sported a form-fitting, cobalt blue Gucci gown with cut out detailing for the 2nd Annual Gucci Award for Women in Cinema. It was only fitting the amateur show-jumper and dedicated equestrian, whose show-jumping career is sponsored by Gucci, and she appears in the brand’s Forever Now campaign, would don a stunning dress Frida Giannini specially crafted for her. Look-at-me earrings and a Gucci stingray clutch (natch) completed her look. On the other side of the blue spectrum, Anglo-American actress and leading lady in the soon-to-be-released The Sweeney, Hayley Atwell, decided to take an oceanic view to dressing and rocked up to the London premiere of the film in a turquoise, Spring 2012 Emilio Pucci lace dress. Completing her eye-opening bright look was a Lulu Guinness ‘Lips’ clutch (a rather fitting, quirkily British touch), and Charlotte Olympia pumps. Here’s what we thought… Fashion News Ed, Maria says: You can’t really go wrong with a bit of Gucci on the red carpet – especially if you work so closely with the brand. Just look at Blake Lively for proof! I love this colour on Charlotte- it complements her hair and skin tone beautifully and the earrings really bring out the electric tones of the dress. Magical! I love the subtle cutaway detailing too as it brings just the right amount of sexiness to the look without overdoing it. Well, if you have the body (which she definitely does) then you’d be a fool not to flaunt it. It’s a toughie […]
Read MoreThe Fash-off! Rihanna vs. Jessica Alba
One is the official queen of off-duty dressing; the other is better known for a daring, yet questionable approach to ‘personality projection’ through her sartorial choices. We could only be talking about Jessica Alba, oh, and Rihanna. This week’s fash-off (or should we say cas(ual)-off) sees the two beauties go head-to-head in considerably low-key outfits – well that’s definitely low-key for RiRi, after what she landed in at Heathrow Airport! Vivacious wardrobe queen, Rihanna, was papped out in London in a complimentary logo-ed Kenzo ensemble, denim cut-offs, Opening Ceremony ‘Mary Ellen’ boots and her fave Gucci USA GG Flag Collection Boston Bag. On the other hand, Jessica Alba was spotted strolling around LA in a pair of – what are fast becoming her signature staple – Current/Elliott black stiletto Wildflower jeans, a casual blue tank and Surface to Air strappy sandals. Here’s what we thought… Fashion News Ed, Maria says: Rihanna’s been dressing a bit erratically lately, and I’m less than impressed with the cannabis jumper she wore as she touched down in London a few days ago, but I do actually really like this look. It has that whole “I just threw this on – and what?!” thing about it, without looking like she got dressed in the dark while hungover. I think the leopard print shoes definitely jazz it and help turn her look from casual to fash-worthy – a very age-appropriate, figure-flattering ensemble from our fave Bajan pop princess. Jessica Alba does casual street style better than most, but this strays slightly from her usual, more “done up” chic outfit choices. The accessorising is perfect though; she found a great top to match her busy trousers, although the shoes are a tad distracting. Even though I’m a huge advocate of Jessica Alba’s off-duty style, I’m going with […]
Read MoreTwo very different – but equally wow-worthy – red carpet looks from Kate Hudson!
Kate Hudson always makes an impression on the red carpet; whether she’s donning the most elaborate gown or experimenting with her fashion choices by wearing something a little more unpredictable, all eyes are usually on her for the right reasons. This was definitely the case at both the red carpet premiere and photocall of The Reluctant Fundamentalist at the Venice Film Festival yesterday. Kate kicked of the proceedings by attending the photocall in a cream suit from the Gucci Resort 2013 collection, taking a more mature and chic sartorial approach than what we’re used to seeing. However, when it was time for the premiere, Kate brought out the big guns and wowed us all with her bedazzling gold gown from the Atelier Versace autumn/winter 2012 collection. Figure-hugging and sparkly are words we usually associate with Kate’s red carpet style, and we can see why: why mess with the formula when it’s perfect? Two flawless looks from the blonde actress, but which is your favourite? Do you commend her style risks or should she stick to what she knows? [poll id=”364″]
Read MoreBest Sunglasses for Middle Aged Men
Sunglasses may be the perfect accessory for your wardrobe. They’re stylish; they protect your eyes from glare and they can offer a significant amount of UV ray protection. For men of a certain age (40 year old and up) it can offer another added perk: certain styles of sunglasses protect your eyes from age related diseases. If you’re 40 years old or older, you need a pair of eyeglasses that will complement your outfit without sacrificing your skin and eye health. Here are some of the best choices for middle aged men: Polarised sunglasses are a great choice for men who need added eye protection. Consider walking outside in the glaring sun without any sunglasses on. The glare from the sun is always tough to bear, isn’t it? Now imagine a pair of glasses that significantly limit the amount of glare you experience, as well as blocking harmful UV rays from damaging your skin when you’re playing golf, out fishing or boating. Wraparound sunglasses not only block UV rays from damaging your skin, they’re also one of the most stylish glasses on the market. So when you’re walking down the street to your car, having lunch outside with friends, or kayaking on the lake, strap on a pair of wraparound glasses. Gradient sunglasses aren’t as popular as wraparounds or polarised glasses, but they work just as effectively at blocking harmful UV rays. They are fashionable, sleek and diverse. Nearly every designer, from Gucci to Dolce and Gabbana, has their own unique take on the gradient style. You don’t have to worry about being blinded from the sun while driving, but at the same time, you can see clearly without shades that are too dark for your taste. They fit well and are flattering, and what can be better for the […]
Read MoreTop Womenswear Trends for Autumn 2012
The fashion catwalk shows previewing autumn 2012 collections, from Milan and Paris to New York, all signalled certain key trends in womenswear that are likely to make their way to the high street for the coming season. Jackets Its all about androdgeny next season. Womenswear inspired by traditional menswear was arguably the defining trend of the catwalk shows for autumn 2012. From 1920s-style dandy-esque smoking jackets and tuxedos to the more masculine straight lines of the 1970s, retro menswear was the evident theme in collections from everyone from Gucci, Emilio Pucci and Miu Miu to Victor & Rolf, Max Mara and Isable Marant. Such jackets are often combined with countryside-chic fabrics such as plaid and tartans. Check out some of the best high street examples of women’s jackets we found from Crew Clothing, and River Island. Gothic One of the key trends to emerge for Autumn 2012 from the catwalks was gothic fashion. Mining the darker seams of fairytales and gothic romance fiction, capes, riding boots and ruffled blousons combined with tuxedo-esque jackets were highly visible. Leading the way was Frida Giannini’s collection for Gucci, where the theme stretched from day to evening wear. All-black outfits are an option, although teaming them with a brown belt or white shirt can make a pleasing contrast. Oriental Embroidered dragons and flowers adorned short-cut jackets and full-length dresses in Dries Van Noten’s catwalk collection, while Issa took inspiration from the Orient for wraparound robes and tight-fitting dresses. Oriental prints will be a feature of the high street this autumn, while more intricate embroidered designs will be all over the high-end stores. Ripped Denim Daisy Dukes with ripped edges and visible pocket linings have been the key trend in summer shorts this year. The theme of distressed denim has been taken over into the […]
Read MoreLeighton Meester for Vera Wang’s new Lovestruck Floral Rush fragrance
Last week it was all about Blake Lively for Gucci, but now it’s her Gossip Girl co-star Leighton Meester’s turn to shine on a fragrance ad campaign. After all, Blair Waldorf wouldn’t have it any other way! Leighton is posing pretty for Carter Smith, as she promotes Vera Wang’s new ‘Lovestruck Floral Rush’ scent – a follow-up to the popular ‘Lovestruck’ perfume that she is also the face of! Top notes of this fragrance include champagne, pink pepper and apricot blossom, as well as some pink passion flower, marigold and white freesia in the middle. Sounds pretty scrumptious, but we’ll let you be the judge of that when it comes out later this month. And just like the original Lovestruck fragrance, it continues with the modern day Romeo and Juliet theme… can’t go wrong with a good old-fashioned love story with a contemporary twist! [Sassi Sam]
Read MoreJessica Biel fronts InStyle US August issue, talks about Justin Timberlake giving her style advice
The gorgeous Jessica Biel is InStyle US’s cover girl for the August issue, rocking a very wow-worthy black and gold Ralph Lauren jacket with some simple jeans and strappy Gucci sandals. The last Jessica Biel cover we were blown away by was her W issue back in March, and this one, which was photographed by Dusan Reljin, is just as beautiful. Jess talks to InStyle about what she’s up to in Hollywood at the moment (her new films Total Recall and The Tall Man, basically), and of course, her yummy fiancé Mr Justin Timberlake. And as if JT didn’t already seem like the perfect boyfriend, the fact that he gives her perfect style advice has just made him go off the scale. “He is fearless in his choices and has a real eye for design,” Jessica told the mag. “And I’ll be honest: He has better taste than I do!” A bold statement; could he be any more perfect? InStyle’s August issue hits newsstands this Friday!
Read MoreTom Ford comes to London, Azzedine Alaia goes to Paris
Just yesterday we told you Karl Lagerfeld was coming to London to launch yet another collection in Selfridges, but he isn’t the only designer to get swept up in London 2012 fever. Tom Ford will be opening his first ever British standalone store in London’s Sloane Street (201-206 to be precise), and it will be neighbours with the likes of Gucci, Fendi and Chanel. The exact opening date has yet to be confirmed, but you can still shop his collections in Selfridges, Harrods and Harvey Nichols, as well as online, in the meantime. Also opening a new store is Azzedine Alaia – and as it will be his first in over 20 years, it’s pretty exciting stuff! His shop, however, will be in Paris, and will sit pretty on the Rue de Marignan (just off Avenue Montaigne where Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior live.) Things are always a big deal where Alaia is concerned – the designer essentially only creates new collections when he feels like it, so we assume he feels the exact same way about stores too. More deets as and when we get them, as always! [Elle]
Read MoreBlake Lively stuns in Zuhair Murad Couture at the Savages premiere
Well what do you know, Blake Lively looked absolutely breathtaking at the LA premiere of Savages last night – shock horror! As if anyone doubted that she would look anything but a vision of utter perfection, though. The stunning actress – and new face of Gucci – rocked the red carpet in a figure-hugging black and nude Zuhair Murad gown from the Spring Couture 2012 collection which pretty much fit her like a glove. We always said that Jennifer Lopez and Zuhair Murad were a match made in heaven (he is creating her tour wardrobe after all) but we think he and Blake also make a pretty indestructible team too. The dress is indisputably stunning, but it doesn’t act alone in making Blake’s overall look so wow-worthy. Her old Hollywood glamour girl side-swept waves, subtle jewellery, pillar box red lips and crescent nails also contribute to the sartorial magic. Flawless!
Read MoreLouis Vuitton is world’s most valuable luxury brand – for the seventh year in a row!
Huge congratulations to Marc Jacobs and the entire Louis Vuitton label, as it’s just been revealed that it’s the world’s most valuable luxury brand – a title it has managed to hold onto for seven impressive years. Other labels to sit nicely in the top ten include Hermes (which came second) Cartier, Rolex, Chanel, Gucci, Prada (for the first time ever… we think that deserves a hearty round of applause!) and Burberry. No surprise seeing Burberry in there, as it’s now a billion pound brand! So why, in this double dip recession, are we still spending so much on luxury goods? “Luxury is seen as a good investment, with people increasingly buying classic pieces rather than high fashion,” said Nick Cooper, a spokesperson for Millward Brown Optimor (the company that conducted the study.) “Those who can afford it indulge, including young professionals who, increasingly unable to buy houses, are spending their disposable income on mid-tier luxury.” Hands up if you’re guilty…

Read MoreIs Alber Elbaz the only ‘real’ designer left?
It’s rare, these days, for a designer belonging to a fashion house owned by a large conglomerate to truthfully speak their mind. Expectations, expected silences and a certain submission are all part and parcel of nurturing someone else’s (fashion) baby, albeit you’re the one who takes a bow out on that runway before a terrifyingly discerning audience. Last week, I came across a piece in The Independent on Lanvin’s loveable artistic director, Alber Elbaz, about his hatred for the word ‘cool’ and his vehement passion for the very creative roots from which he comes. Put simply, he highlighted how the fashion world has, to a set degree, become a theatre act, dramatic designers the puppeteers – I’ll leave you to guess who the puppets are… At the helm of luxury powerhouse Lanvin, Elbaz has quietly transformed this brand into a superpower, celebrated by the celebrity and fashion pack alike. Arriving in 2002, Elbaz took the then ailing brand into his hands, and like a little romantic fairy, brought it back to the fore. In the article, Elbaz, although mentioning no names refers to the spectacle that is the inside fashion pack, and how the industry has increasingly become detached from what it originally set out to do. He also speaks with a certain sadness in his voice on the overdriven rumour mill of who-replaces-who every time a fashion house restructures its creative team, and the pain of his own somewhat history-making dismissal from YSL in 1999 after the Gucci group brought out the brand, for reasons no other than Tom Ford wanting to creatively take over. Talking proudly of a soon-to-be-published book marking his tenth anniversary at Lavin, Elbaz said: “I thought that at a time like now, when the whole industry is about the six minutes of the show […]

Read MoreSo…who will design Angelina Jolie’s wedding dress?
Since Brangelina announced their engagement by brandishing a ring costing the equivalent of a modest flat in London in our faces, we decided to amuse ourselves (and you, of course) with Ms Pitt-To-Be’s prospective wedding dress. We didn’t just want to imagine what Angelina would choose for her big day, we actually wanted to ‘create’ it, so to speak. (Keep reading…) Taking a brief look at Angelina’s red carpet appearances so far this year, it’s clear she has an affinity for….. 1. Versace – She opted for directional look on the Golden Globes red carpet in a rather memorable Atelier Versace number, and who can forget the Oscars? Apart from the infamous, knobbly kneed flash of leg on display – which acquired a following of its own – again Angelina picked Versace. Donatella’s designs are clearly number one for the Hollywood superstar, but she does opt for other big names, too. Angelina’s daytime, smart-casual look often lies in a Ralph Lauren suit, and at the 3rd Annual Women in the World Summit last month, she appeared in an androgynous, monochrome Gucci suit. It appears Ms. Jolie is a sucker for classic fashion names, but not without putting a personal and highly unconventional spin on things. She won’t just wear a look fresh-off-the-catwalk, but rather tattoo it (pardon the pun), sartorially, with her initials. And, extreme personalisation, we say, is the way forward when it comes to picking a memorable wedding dress. Ange definitely won’t be succumbing to the ‘meringue culture’ surrounding wedding dresses! (We hope!) So, a lot of you may possibly be thinking Angelina will settle for a Versace bridal number, but the Italian brand isn’t known for its altar-appropriate fashion. However, one wave of Ange’s celeb wand and Donatella would probably be in her atelier working on something […]

Read MoreFashion’s Brazen Copycats: Inspiration or shameless imitation?
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But I say, is it really when the imitation is so blatant that you can’t tell a difference between the imitated and the imitator? The news has recently been awash with trademark infringement stories, and rightly so, because this type of infringement is serious and spells financial disaster for the business involved. In the world of fashion, however, the existence of copycats is ten-fold that of anywhere else. Tatty Devine recently filed a legal complaint against Claire’s Accessories after several of the former’s designs, including a renowned dinosaur necklace were copied. Then, the highly documented story of Christian Louboutin, who fruitlessly dragged Parisian fashion house Yves Saint Laurent to the dock over its use of Louboutin’s famed red sole. But two recent situations of design stealing have left me, well, speechless. The first is that of Jessica Simpson taking rather direct inspiration from Christian Louboutin’s 2010-release ‘Statarata’ heel – in other words copying the shoe, renaming it ‘Evangel’, removing the red sole and selling it at an affordable price. Simpson’s $98 rip off of the $995 ‘Statarata’ heel is so obvious, even an orthodox, flat-sporting, anti-heel protestor would be able to spot the non-difference. The second scenario is similar to the first except it involves two mega-brands at loggerheads over what is effectively a poor attempt at covering up an obvious creative crime. Italian powerhouse Gucci has accused Guess and its footwear licensing company, Marc Fisher Footwear, of devising a “massive scheme” to copy Gucci’s trademarks, which include the classic square ‘G’, the diamond-shaped repeating pattern with interlocking G’s, the designer’s name in its script font, and the green and red stripe design.’ At first glance, I really can’t spot the difference between the two designer versions of the sneaker at […]

It’s almost celeb style overload this morning – although we think you’ll agree that you can never have too much where the Oscars are concerned. The celebs who didn’t walk the red carpet definitely didn’t stay home in their pjs – they went to either Vanity Fair or Elton John’s Oscars parties, with some celebs even going to both. Or all three if you count the actual Oscars red carpet too!

Oscars, they may not be, but that doesn’t mean the outfits worn on the red carpet were any less exciting. In fact, a few of the looks worn at the 2012 Independent Spirit Awards were far better received at MFL HQ than some of those from yesterday’s Academy Awards. Is it because the attendees are so desperate to get it right on the Oscars red carpet that they hold back or play it safe?

As it was his last collection with Jil Sander, Raf Simons definitely made sure he went out with a bang; it may have been a subtle and quiet bang, but he definitely left a lasting impression. We adored the pastel pink coats and dresses that made their way down the runway, which is a huge contrast to what we have been seeing the past few Jil Sander seasons. Emporio Armani presented what Giorgio himself called the “Little Winter Follies” collection, which was sultry, sleek and undeniably striking. Velvet, fringe, floral, polka dot, chiffon, leather – it was all there, and all teamed with cute, flirty short shorts; not very wintry on paper, but paired with predominantly monochrome shades, tights and flat shoes, worked a treat! Bottega Veneta joined the likes of Gucci and Alberta Ferretti with the dark and moody theme, offering a minimalist but edgy autumn/winter 2012 collection. The evening gowns were a huge highlight for us; there was an abundance of flesh on show, and lots of feathers, peplums and fine embroidered detail to boot. Last but not least on our favourites list was Emilio Pucci, who offered sheer, slashed, sensual designs in wintry and seductive shades. Peter Dundas apparently sought inspiration from his Norwegian heritage, and also dabbled in the masculine meets feminine theme that many designers have been playing with this season.

Read MoreBest of 2011: 5 trends we loved
2011 has certainly been a year for experimenting: there must be something about living in a bleak economical climate that’s made us all a bit more dreamy and creative, and all the better for it, we say! This year, we’ve donned all manner of lengths, fabrics and patterns (to many a varied response, probably), but creating, experimenting and borrowing styles is what keeps fashion exciting and meaningful, right? And besides, it’s always fun dressing up to try out a new look, whether it works or not. So, without further ado, here are our five favourite trends that we loved from 2011… Sixties Mod Our favourite era; what’s not to love about short A-line dresses and a sleek monochrome palette? This year we’ve channelled Jean Shrimpton, Jane Birkin and Twiggy all at once, we’ve flicked our eyeliners and we’ve donned every Peter Pan collar going, and do you know what? We loved every minute of it. Peace, Love and Mod Dressing? Yes, please! Prints 2011 was undeniably the year of the print: never before have we seen so many bold and beautiful patterns sported all at once. Mixing your fruit print shorts with your breton stripe T-shirt was officially how we wore print this year – it doesn’t sound like it should work on paper, but in practice, it’s brilliant. Fur Fluffy, furry, faux and fantastic: fur had a real moment in 2011. The fur coat came into its own at the beginning of the year in the UK, when us Brits experienced our first proper snow fall in years. Warm and glamorous, fur became the snow-challenged girl’s best friend. Then, once we saw the Gucci fur stoles on the AW11 runway, the fur stole literally stole our hearts, trimming our camel boyfriend coats with a glorious dash of fluffy femininity. […]
Read MoreBest of 2011: best dressed celebs
It’s getting towards the end of the year and we’ve been overcome by a sudden sense of contemplativeness. While New Year might bring resolutions, diets and silly foil hats, there’s something it also brings that we’re not ashamed to love – yes, best of lists! Here at MFL we like a yearly round up just much as the next publication, but ours is, like, so much more fun because it involves clothes and celebrities. What’s not to love? We took a look through the year’s celebrity style hits to sift out the best from the average. So, fasten your seatbelt, kids, here’s our run through of this year’s best dressed… Alexa Chung in Miu Miu Looking like a grown up school girl, we loved Alexa Chung’s Miu Miu ensemble at the label’s spring/summer 2012 show in Paris earlier this year – no wonder she scooped the Style Icon Award for a second year running! Jessica Alba in Dolce & Gabbana Jessica Alba rarely puts a foot out of place and looks so pretty at a Swarovski party in California. Her lace Dolce & Gabbana dress combined with lashings of gems reminded us why we love Jess so much. Nicole Richie in Stella McCartney Kick starting us into the festive mood this year, style queen Nicole Richie wowed us in her Stella McCartney poppy red skirt and sweater combo. Known for her laid-back boho style, she gave us a ladylike look we hadn’t seen from her in a long while. Selena Gomez in Marchesa Ladies and Gentlemen, the MFL award for Best Newcomer goes to 19-year-old Selena Gomez. Wearing this angelic Marchesa dress, she somehow looked girly and feminine whilst maintaining an air of sophistication. We predict big things! Olivia Palermo in Tibi Queen of accessorising, no best dressed is complete […]

Born in Slovenia and originally trained in industrial design before gaining an MA in jewellery design from the Royal College of Art, Lara Bohinc’s jewellery has always carried a sculptural aesthetic that makes her pieces extremely attention-grabbing. Having collaborated with Gucci, Marcus Lupfer and Lanvin to name a few – whilst also working as a freelance consultant for Cartier International – it’s clear that Lara’s got a good eye for style, and this bracelet is exemplary of her talents.
