New York Fashion Week: William Rast AW09

Last night, William Rast not only brought in the celebrities (naturally Jessica Biel was there to support her man, she is stunning!) but also pulled in fashions heavyweights , Anna Wintour (she is tiny!) and Carine Roitfeld (she is amazing!). It was obvious not just from Wintour and Roitfeld’s presence but also from the collection that Justin Timberlake, his partner Trace Ayala and fellow creative directors Marcella and Johan Lindeberg are pushing for credibility in the fashion industry.

Michelle Obama wears Jason Wu again for the cover of Vogue

In contrast to the Pixie Geldof for Vogue Italia debate, Vogue US has chosen a very worthy woman to grace their cover. The First Lady, Jason Wu, Mrs. Obama was shot by legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. Inside we’re treated to an interview written by editor-at-large. Andre Leon Talley who comments: “She doesn’t need any help [choosing outfits]. She loves fashion and knows what works for her. Mrs. Obama picked the outfits for the shoot herself, and chose a Narcisco Rodriguez black dress as one of her pieces. She’s pictured in a number of ‘hard at work’ poses and in the interview discusses everything from the press interest in her wardrobe to trying to take her children to school. On the First Lady, Anna Wintour remarked: “Change was the clarion call of Barack Obama’s election campaign, though I don’t think any of us at Vogue initially realized that would include the difference that was going to be made by First Lady Michelle Obama’s wardrobe…. It’s inspiring to see our First Lady so serene and secure in her personal style. Mrs. Obama is an inspiration to many and it’s great to see her at the forefront of the media. Appearing in Vogue gives her a personal touch…a feeling of familiarity. [Source, source, source]

The Grammy Awards 2009: The Good, the bad and the ugly!

The Grammy Awards is the one ceremony when stars can let their hair down and don some more interesting creations. It’s also the time when we get to see music stars trying their very best to look as stylish as Oscar nominees. Yes, it’s a mixed bag every year and this year was no exception. The Good Audrina Patridge , Looking like a young Audrey Hepburn, this column of teal from Tadesh looks stunning. The patent belt and clutch are right on trend and that side bun looks nonchalant chic. The neckline is incredibly flattering. An all round winner. Katy Perry , Hold the front page, Katy Perry actually got a red carpet look right, but she’s got a long way to go to make up for that horrendous performance. As for the Basil Soda gown, it is a gorgeous springtime pink, fits like a glove and the oversized corsage detail adds a creative edge. Carrie Underwood , Another surprise style winner. Shimmering delightfully in Zuhair Murad, Carrie shows off her wonderful figure and quite rightly plays down the accessories. Gwyneth Paltrow , She has become the queen of showstopping outfits. Working her incredible legs, she does look phenonmenal. Gwyneth quite literally shines in Versace. The Bad Miley Cyrus , Herve Leger by Max Azria is the brand of choice at the moment. But the young, gorgeous ones usually choose a nice little body con. And whilst I appreciate that Miley is enough trouble without getting her boobs out, she should have opted to dress her age. Solange Knowles , Talking of acting your age, whilst Miley needs to look more youthful, Solange needs to age up. This outfit is something you might have worn to your school disco aged 14. Not the Grammy Awards aged 22. Sheryl Crowe , […]

Lebron James and Gisele Bündchen do US Vogue

The latest issue of US Vogue has hit newsstands and as we suspected it’s generating quite a buzz. For reasons unknown to us, editor, Anna Wintour opted to break Vogue’s unwritten rules for its annual shape issue and have not one but two models grace the cover, one of them being a man and a black man at that. Shot by Annie Lebowitz, professional Basketball player strikes a pose with supermodel Gisele Bündchen, wearing Calvin Klein. Its the third time we’ve been treated to a male figure on the cover of Vogue, Richard Gere had the privilege of being the first in Nov 1992, posing alongside his then wife Cindy Crawford and George Clooney did the honours in June 2000 with none other than Gisele…again. What do we think? Unfortunately Gisele’s pose looks uncomfortable and unnatural, otherwise it could have been a great cover.

London Fashion Week: Its a wrap!

According to the most recent edition of Drapers magazine, since the point of taking over at the British Fashion Council, 18 months ago, Helen Riva has managed to bring London Fashion Week – with the help of sponsors – from the point of nearly declaring bankruptcy to the brilliant success that it was this season. Seriously….even my Aunt who hasn’t really got a clue about fashion week informed me over the weekend of some of the highlights from the past week. So what does this mean? The PR was fantastic and the exciting buzz was felt by many! Apparently Riva, wants to put the swing back in to LFW and intends to make the event an important part of the “city’s cultural calendar” so I guess we can expect bigger and better things come February.

Cream of the crop

These days I find analysing red carpet dresses pretty tedious, everyone plays it so safe and when one star does attempt to be slightly fashion forward and take a risk they get criticised a hundred times over. Example? Jennifer Hudson in Oscar de la Renta. I just don’t agree with the masses on this one, her jacket was cute and complimented her figure. No doubt Andre Leon Talley, the man supposedly responsible for the apparent disaster that was her outfit won’t be asked to lend his efforts anytime soon, even if he is Anna Wintour’s right hand man.

It’s got to have cost her a Vogue cover or two!

Designer Profile: Rachel Roy

There are a crop of women such as Jasmine De Milo and Margherita Missoni to the Marchesa duo who are making a sophisticated mark in the fashion industry. Those mentioned have had their paths cushioned either by a rich daddy, a mogul boyfriend, or have been born into an existing fashion dynasty, however, in all three cases each lady has the talent to match. Another female whose name must be added to the list and whose story stands out from the rest is that of womenswear designer Rachel Roy. Often pictured – trying quite hard to give off the impression of perfect relationship status – with her beau hip-hop mogul Damon Dash – no one can argue that her rise to success hasn’t been fuelled by hard work and a whole lot of determination. Starting out her career in fashion as a t-shirt folder at a retail store, Roy took on an internship at Rocawear, progressing through the ranks, to Creative Director for their womenswear line. However partly due to the fact that her design approach clashed with the urban chic of Rocawear, Roy grabbed the bull by its stylish horns and developed her own line, making her debut this year at NY Fashion Week in September. Roy, who exudes grace and style, has even managed to get the blessings of fashions most powerful tag team, Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley. Her spring/summer 07 collection was hardly the work of a trendsetter, but more that of a communicator, and she spoke perfectly to both the working lady and the lady who lunches. Keeping it simple and working solely on shape and detail, Rachel Roy’s work is nothing short of class. With fashion week not too far away, it’ll be exciting to see what Roy has in store for the […]

Success of Devil wears Prada

Quite surprised at the success of “The Devil wears Prada”. According to reviews Meryl Streep gives a very impressive performance as Miranda Priestly, the boss from hell who’s said to bear a resemblance to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour. So much so that some designers were unwilling to lend their designs to the movie, for fear of getting on the wrong side of Ms Wintour. “The Devil Wears Prada” is the first film to take a 21st-century view of fashion, moving beyond the myth of its practitioners as visionaries, revealing them instead as the exacting functionaries they are: those who live and dress and think according to the seasonal edicts of global conglomerates.” – ny times.com

Getting connected

Let’s say you are the next Marc Jacobs, young, talented, charming. Or a budding Guy Trebay, Kate Betts, Constance White, Richard Martin with bon mots bursting in your brain. Or the next Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, or Andre Leon Talley. But you have no connections and no idea how to get them. You want to get IN, into the industry, into the fashion shows. How do you do it? 1. GET A JOB – Andre Leon Talley started his career sweeping the floors of Andy Warhol’s Interview offices. Marc Jacobs worked at Charivari while attending high school. Anna Wintour assisted Carrie Donovan at Harper’s Bazaar. Want to be a stylist? Find a photographer and develop imagery together to build a portfolio from which you can get paying work. If you write create your own website or xerox your own ‘zine. 2. GET CONNECTED – Find out what’s going on. The bible of all bibles in the fashion world is Fashioncalendar.net 3. AND NETWORK – Fortunately or unfortunately connections count for a lot in any world and especially the world of fashion. Make a powerful enough network for yourself however and it can even compensate a lack of talent. If you are not the daughter, son, niece, nephew, friend, then you must make your own connections. Condé Nast does Reality

Condé Nast have joined the reality tv bandwagon. According to WWD, Condé Nast’s West bureau have sent out an email confirming shoots have begun for a new reality show based around Teen Vogue. The show will follow Lauren Conrad from MTV’s docudrama “Laguna Beach” around while she interns at the magazine under Vogue senior West Coast editor Lisa Love. Richard Beckman the president of Condé Nast’s media group has called the idea “intriguing”, and followed up with “I think it could be interesting, given what goes on in this building.” There is a possibility the show could be a test run for a spin off for the “Laguna Beach” docudrama. Hopefully we’ll see another series in the pipeline, focused around Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, that would prove very interesting. [WWD, Teen Vogue]

Designer sunglasses: Splendid or a sorry waste?

Accessory shopping, I’d like to think, is my forte. Drawn far too easily to a just-landed bag or the latest crop of eye-popping statement jewellery pieces; during a financially destructive trip to Selfridges, I’ll happily make allowances for an unnecessary accessory investment from my rent fund. But there’s a particular accessory category I haven’t quite warmed to, yet; sunglasses, and the hefty price tag that accompanies them. I may sound rather fickle, especially after declaring a soft spot for unnecessary expenditure, but standard looking sunnies that cost the equivalent of one month’s food allowance aren’t worth starving for. It confuses me that people are willing to spend a questionable sum of money on an item so prone to damage or loss, and with sunglasses becoming a permanent fixture in daywear looks, the fashionable population is increasingly treating sunglasses as an investment purchase – but, instead happily snapping up near seven pairs a year! The recent surge in luxe eyewear brands has afforded this previously seasonal accessory category cult status. A lizard-trimmed cat eye version by Linda Farrow Luxe will set you back a palm tingling £345, whilst Finest Seven’s 14 carat white gold-plated aviator sunnies will see you part with a meaty sum of £645. Fashion Editors (most notably La Wintour) have always seen the sunny side (pardon the pun) to recession-inducing eyewear, including the likes of Kanye West and Rihanna, often papped sunglasses-clad, indoors, past midnight; but sadly, we’re not all blessed with a budget of Niagara proportions. That said, it doesn’t mean I’d rule out applying my tried and tested high-low method to sunglasses shopping. Partial to snapping up pocket-friendly, on-trend eyewear at Topshop and Asos, thanks to their extensive collection of cat eye and round frame sunnies, it also works well to purchase a high end version […]

Miranda Kerr scoops Best Dressed of the Week in Erdem

The multi-tasking model, mum and missus of Mr Orlando ‘Hottie’ Bloom surely knows how to make a stylish headline! Spotted out and about in Sydney, Miranda looked delectable in an Erdem Spring/Summer 2011 ensemble. Clashing prints is a favourite pastime of ours (if you hadn’t already guessed), and Miranda has this down to a tee! Pairing her pretty prints with nude courts, the Prada ‘Pyramide’ bag from the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, and a statement crystal necklace – we simply cannot stop ogling at the perfection that is Mrs. Bloom! Often spotted in super-slick outfits, Miranda has definitely marked herself out as a fashionable one to watch, but don’t you think Miranda’s look is a cheeky take on Madame Wintour’s signature style: floral dress, nude heels and statement sunnies sound familiar… Top marks for channelling the ‘Wintour Way’ of dressing, Miranda. After all, there’s nothing wrong with being inspired by the most powerful woman in the fashion world!

Long live McQueen: the luxury label’s having a moment

It started on Friday with the royal wedding, and it continued on Monday at the Met Ball – now, it’s safe to say McQueen’s having a moment. Thanks to Sarah Burton’s already-iconic wedding dress for Kate Middleton, McQueen’s the label on everyone’s mouths, and last night’s Met Ball did nothing to stop the word spreading. Celebrating the life and work of the late designer, the Costume Institute Gala has just opened its New York doors to an exclusive exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, and this year’s annual Met Ball paid tribute to the man himself Monday night in a specially-themed evening which saw eight stars wearing one piece or another from his eponymous label. Naturally, we’re feeling a little patriotic right now and have decided we want in on the action, so we’ve rounded up our five favourite McQueen must-haves to snap up in celebration. See below for our top picks – long live McQueen! Moth wing silk scarf, £285, available at Alexander McQueen. BUY NOW!   3D leaf skull cuff, £250, available at Alexander McQueen. Topshop takes over at the Met Ball

The prestigious Met Ball took place last night, and the fashion elite were out in full force to showcase their style talents on the red carpet. British fashion reigns at the Met Ball

For an event that usually champions the best of American fashion, last night’s Met Ball saw a surprising amount of stars wearing gowns from British designers. Perhaps it was a nod towards last night’s honouree, the late Alexander McQueen, who’s life and work was celebrated in an accompanying exhibition, Savage Beauty, or maybe the world hasn’t quite recovered from royal wedding fever just yet – but either way, the Brits ruled the red carpet. Dressing the most celebs was Stella McCartney – also clad in her own label – who decked out an impressive 14 stars in her dresses (save a jumpsuit for Iman), including Rihanna, Naomi Watts, Eva Mendes, Maggie Gyllenhaal and BFFs Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Hudson, Thandie Newton and Madonna. Also high up on the most-spotted list was, unsurprisingly, Alexander McQueen. Sarah Burton wore a white dress by her own design to honour her friend and mentor, while Daphne Guinness, Naomi Campbell, Gisele, Coco Rocha, Anna Dello Russo, Karen Elson, Racquel Zimmerman and Salma Hayek and Sarah Jessica Parker all paid tribute to the designer. And the list of Brits doesn’t stop there – Erdem dressed Lily Donaldson in a floor-length navy lace gown, Burberry bagged Rosie Huntington-Whiteley to wear a satin rose gown and nude python clutch, and Alexa Chung wore new-season Christopher Kane. Stay tuned for our round-up of the best and worst dressed from last night’s Met Ball.
