The different faces of fashion snobbery

Along with next season’s offerings, this week has been filled with tales of an adventurous nature. Kim Kardashian has been a frequenter on my social media timeline, as has comeback couturier, John Galliano. So what’s the connection between the two, you ask? One of fashion snobbery and its many faces, I say. It was reported earlier this week that Kim Kardashian’s shoot for the March issue of ELLE US was, to a certain extent, hampered ever so slightly by the lack of designer pieces her stylist was able to pull. The stylist in question, Nicola Formichetti, is Lady Gaga’s fashion friend and creative director of Mugler, and a fashion force to be reckoned with in the industry. So, why the problem to pull pieces for a relatively standard shoot for someone of Formichetti’s fashion calibre? Well, his explanation was Kim’s ‘not the ‘It’ girl yet, but she will be’. Really? I guess this comes down to how we define the term ‘‘It’ girl’. With a public profile such as Kim Kardashian’s (given that major brands thrive off even bigger personalities) and her major outreach to an extended fan base (she surely has partial support and love from Kanye’s fans, too) that amounts to a Twitter following in excess of 17 million, it shouldn’t be impossible to figure out. Isn’t an ‘It’ girl emblazoned across everything, everywhere (cue: previously relatively unknown Cara Delevingne now tipped as the next Karlie Kloss/Kate Moss)? Isn’t her name supposed to roll off every tongue, appearance shift a thousand products and boyfriend supposed to be the world’s number one rapper? An argument about Kim’s rapidly expanding curves seemed to have seeped into the conversation, but people like Kate Upton would void such an idea. After all, hips or no hips, Upton isn’t the average size zero […]

Midweek Moodboard: Work-out gear

Aint nothing like a brand new year and an abundance of extra pounds to guilt and shame us into joining the gym again. We don’t want to look terrible while attempting to use the treadmill though (our unimpressive level of fitness will already sort that out) so finding the perfect gymwear is essential. You never know what strong, hunky, burly man might be flexing his perfectly sculpted muscles around the corner – a girl always has to look her best… if not for the menfolk then for herself! Ashley Tisdale, Kim Kardashian and Vanessa Hudgens are just some of the famous faces who have perfected the glam working out look, which is why we’ve looked to them for some inspiration. Thanks, ladies! Take a look at some of the pieces that just might get us in the mood for the gym: Bordfield bag, £34, available at Jack Wills Sports bra, £14.99, available at Superdry Black tank top, £10, Puma available at eBay Clerwood water bottle, £4.50, available at Jack Wills Sports top, £34, Esprit available at Zalando Gym leggings, £19, Sport by Ellos available at La Redoute Air Max 90 08 trainers, £122, Nike available at Littlewoods

Rachel Zoe appointed ShoeDazzle Chief Stylist

Despite her clothing collections not doing as well as she had hoped, we always knew that Rachel Zoe would be alright and bounce back. And as we expected, she’s landed on her feet again – literally in this case! The blonde stylist-to-the-stars has just been named as the Chief Stylist for ShoeDazzle, a role previously held by Kim Kardashian. The service works just like the wonderful StylistPick, whereby the shoes all come at a set price (an affordable one at that -$39.95!) and are selected to cater to each individual by people in the know; in this case: Ms Zoe! “It is really taking things to the next level in terms of elevating the brand of ShoeDazzle and some of the other offerings we are going to be having soon,” said CEO and co-founder Brian Lee. “I don’t think there is anybody else in the world who understands trend as well as Rachel. I think we are bringing in the very best, and I think that elevates the style aspect of ShoeDazzle.” We think she’s the perfect choice too – after all, ShoeDazzle reportedly surveyed 50,000 of its customers to find out which celeb they’d most like to take style advice from, and Rachel was the clear winner. “Rachel Zoe was number one on the list by far,” Brian Lee said. “There was no second place.” Members will start receiving their personal product selections from Rachel this month – and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for the TV commercial airing any day now! MTV EMAs 2012 – the best dressed!

It was an exciting Sunday night, yesterday. Not only did we have the X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing results to deal with (do you think the right people left, by the way?) we also had the MTV EMAS to watch! And we’re kind of glad, because things got a bit tense thanks to those results shows! We’ve been looking forward to these awards ever since we found out Heidi Klum would be hosting, and she didn’t let us or her country down! Although we loved all of her many outfit changes (there was a lot of Versace!) our favourite was definitely the blue Versace she sported on the arrivals red carpet. We know all the EMA hosts and hostesses enjoy an outfit change or ten while doing their presenting duties, but nothing beats having a word-class supermodel on the stage, right? Other ladies who impressed us sartorially included Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian, Gwen Stefani and Rita Ora, who really went for the wow factor in a stunning red Marchesa dress! Here’s a list of some of our favourite fashion hits from the evening. Who gets your vote?  Heidi Klum in Versace [image] Taylor Swift in J Mendel Rita Ora in Marchesa Kim Kardashian in Stephane Rolland Louise Roe Alicia Keys in Stella McCartney Lana Del Rey [poll id=”377″]

Kate Upton is now a Vogue cover girl!

You better believe it Kate Upton critics… the 20-year-old former Sports Illustrated model has just scored her first ever Vogue cover. It didn’t take long for her to cement her fashionista status and get Vogue’s seal of approval, did it? First Carine Roitfeld’s CR Fashion Book and now Vogue – what next, we wonder? Having said that, Vogue Italia doesn’t actually reflect every single issue of the fashion Bible. After all, Kim Kardashian has fronted the Italian version of the mag, despite Anna Wintour vowing to never choose Kim or any of the Kardashian “klan” (sorry!) to front the US edition. Still, Vogue is still Vogue at the end of the day and we think Kate looks incredible. There’s something very old pin-up girl/Cindy Crawford back in the day about it, don’t you think? Plus, we haven’t seen a model fill a bra quite like Kate on the front of a fashion glossy for quite some time, so nice going!

Is Kanye West teaming up with Karl Lagerfeld?

We know that Karl Lagerfeld is one of the busiest men in fashion (and the world, probably) but it doesn’t look like he is slowing down anytime soon. Rumour has it that the Kaiser had a meeting with none other than Kanye West in New York, where the pair apparently discussed some future business ventures. “They were in a deep conversation, then later appeared to be getting devices out to discuss design ideas,” a source told the New York Post.  Nothing has been confirmed by Chanel, or either of the boys’ PR teams, but it doesn’t sound like a crazy idea seeing as Kanye sat FROW at the Chanel spring/summer 2012 catwalk show and was photographed for Chanel’s The Little Black Jacket book. Sounds like an exciting project might be in the works. And imagine the endless marketing possibilities? If Kanye convinces the Kaiser to let Kim Kardashian in on the deal, it could be a triple K threat! Does “Karl Kanye Kim Kollection” sound like a good potential name? Watch this space! [Vogue]

Follow the masses and get your Converse today!

Kanye West might be all over the Yeezy trainers (the foot candy he designed with Nike) but not every man is willing to literally walk in his shoes. While Kim Kardashian‘s other half and a host of his other rapper pals might not be ready give up their Nike’s just yet, Converse trainers still remain as one of the most popular types of footwear in the world for both men and women; and given their iconic timeless design, it’s not hard to see why! If you think the Converse brand has been around forever, then you’re not far off, because the first shoes were invented back in 1908. Although the classic black and white design is just as – if not more – popular as it was back in the day other Converse creations are also taking the world by storm too. Not only are they a great sports shoe (we don’t need to tell you how many basketball stars, tennis players, skateboarders and other athletes swear by them) but they make casual dressing a breeze. The majority of styles and colours tend to go with most daywear, and given the right accessorising, can actually translate well into nightwear too provided you’re not attending a black tie event. You only need to look at all the male and female celebs rocking their Converse on a daily basis to understand the full extent of their popularity. And you can even get some cheeky styling tips from them too. Actors such as Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford and Ben Affleck, and singers like Bruno Mars and Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong are just a few of the famous faces who swear by Converse trainers, be it the popular Chuck Taylor All -star designs or something a little bit more individual. If you want […]

Kanye West ISN’T showing at Paris Fashion Week

What’s this – Kanye West isn’t showing his third collection at Paris Fashion Week? When we first heard the rumours we were a little bit shocked, but it’s true – the rapper-turned-designer will not be showing his third DW by Kanye West collection on the catwalks of Paris next month. Although the news was officially confirmed by the PR agency that represents his label, no specific reason was given. Do we think his new relationship with Kim Kardashian has anything to do with it? Is the label – which has received mixed reviews from the fashion world – discontinuing for good or is it taking a little break? Answers on a postcard please – and we’ll keep you posted once we know more! We don’t know about you, but we were kind of looking forward to Kanye’s vision for the spring/summer 2013 season. [Vogue]

Olivia Wilde wows in Alexander McQueen

Kanye West was definitely onto something when he told girlfriend Kim Kardashian that dressing in black and white was the sexiest sartorial option. Although he and Kim have got it wrong a few times (everyone’s human, after all) we hope they will look to Olivia Wilde for inspiration in the future. Olivia absolutely nailed the all-black trend when she attended Conde Nast Traveler’s “The Visionaries” event in New York last night in a stunning black Alexander McQueen dress. Olivia’s demure but edgy look highlights everything we love about the brand – the structure in the shoulders, the feminine flowing skirt and the sexiness in the plunging neckline. The actress doesn’t need a fancy belt to accentuate her tiny waist, but the one she chose was certainly a nice touch. It broke up black colour and complemented the golden tones of her hair and make-up beautifully. Olivia Wilde and Alexander McQueen are a dream team, and we can’t wait for them to join forces again!

Midweek Moodboard: Mad for monochrome

Now that Kanye West has had his way with her wardrobe, it’s usually Kim Kardashian who’s rocking the monochrome trend these days. However, it’s another K who has got us obsessing over black and white clothing this Wednesday, and that K is none other than Kristen Stewart. Who would have thunk it? K-Stew has really come into her own on the red carpet lately, and we think her latest appearance might have been the first time the usually camera shy and awkward actress has looked like she was enjoying the flashing camera lights. If you want to embrace the monochrome trend but don’t want to risk looking like a zebra, then black and white separates are the best way to go about it. If it can work for Kristen Stewart (and the other famous K’s Karl Lagerfeld and Kim Kardashian) then we think it’ll totally work for us too. Here are some hot black and white pieces to snap up right now should you want to get in on the monochrome action: Lace corset top, £22, available at Topshop Cat ring, £8, Tatty Devine available at Selfridges Skull print scarf, £234, Alexander McQueen available at Far Fetch Black platforms, £260, Diesel available at Javari White prom skirt, £10, available at Topshop Monochrome tote bag, £2379, Reed Krakoff available at Far Fetch Contrast lapel jacket, £140, Just Cavalli available at Flannels [Image]

Five Coast dresses for any occasion!

[noskim] While searching for last minute London Fashion Week outfits, I got a bit distracted and somehow stumbled upon the party dress section of the House of Fraser website. As we all know, Coast is one of the first ports of call when it comes to finding a dress for a fab occasion (whether it’s a summer or winter wedding, glam party, you name it, Coast has it covered!) and I found myself somewhat overwhelmed with choice. The selection of dresses available at Coast right now is rather insane – we are approaching party season after all! – but I’ve managed to narrow them down and select a few current favourites. What do you think of my choices? Are you tempted by any of them? Check out the full selection of these Coast dresses currently available to buy right here. There’s something very Stella McCartney about this dress. You know the design I mean – the one that every single celeb from Kate Winslet to Kim Kardashian has been wearing. Black is obviously the sartorially safe colour, but the plunging neckline and polkadot detailing jazzes it up and makes it just that little bit daring! Perfect for wearing on a posh evening out with the other half! I’d wear it with: some dainty sandals for an elegant look, or some bright platform heels to be loud, bold and glam! Charlette knit dress, £95  Purple is definitely one of the hottest colours of the new season, and the best thing about this dress is that it features several shades of it, so you really are spoilt for choice! Really tempted to snap this up and wear to my birthday shenanigans later this week… I’d definitely stand out from the crowd! I’d wear it with: the beauty of this dress is that it […]

Could eBay kill our charitable side?

Like a sickening Heston Blumenthal recipe of bacon ice cream, one wouldn’t consider stringing ‘Kim Kardashian’ and ‘charity’ along in the same sentence. I’m not talking about financial charity – she does that – I’m talking about fashionable charity; the act of handing over the beloved contents of your wardrobe to a charity of your choice for a cause worthier than walking around in them racking up envious praise, without financial gain. After rap star boyfriend Kanye branded her rather extensive wardrobe ‘ghetto’, Kim Kardashian has jumped on the e-selling bandwagon and auctioned several items from her designer-heavy wardrobe on eBay. Well, obviously, there’s no room for cleavage-pushing bandage dresses and heels teetering on Coco Austin territory in Kanye West’s all leather and monochrome world. So, the subservient girlfriend that she is, Kim has decided to flog her pre-loved wares on the world’s largest marketplace, and only donate 10% of the proceeds from sale to the ‘Life Changing Church Community’ charity. *insert shocked-fall-on-the-floor- gasp here*. An appalling donation by the standards of someone who has several financially flourishing enterprises on the go, and splashes $750,000 on a Lamborghini for her beau’s birthday present (cue: awkward/angry shifting in chair). But her reckless spending has nothing to do with the pain that I’m feeling in the part of my heart dedicated to all things charity-related. No. The fact that most things a super-celeb of Kim’s calibre endorses turn to platinum (forget gold), and quite frankly thrash all records of public success frightens me. Take the sacred union of marriage for example, now reduced to an easy, 72-day (façade), complete with desirable Vera Wang wedding dress. Could Kim’s shift to eBay spell ruin for charities so desperately in need of donations such as these to keep supporting the causes that created them? An […]

Tulisa underwhelms in Herve Leger at X Factor press launch

It goes without saying that X Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos has a cracking body, and we all know by now that the classic Herve Leger by Max Azria bandage dress does wonders for showcasing one’s curves… but we think she could have said “look at my hot bod” in a better way. Don’t get us wrong, we love the bandage dress as it does exactly what it’s supposed to; just look at how miniscule Tulisa’s waist is. Plus, it gives her an hourglass figure to rival Kim Kardashian’s. However, were just really, really, really bored of bandage dresses! And to top it all off, we’re still not too keen on her newly lightened locks. We really want to love it as we have a bit of a soft spot for Tulisa, so we’re hoping it will grow on us as the weeks go on. Are you looking forward to the new series of X Factor which starts tomorrow? We can’t wait for the live shows, as we know Tulisa will up the style ante and give us some show-stopping looks to prove she is a (semi) Greek goddess!

Beyonce and Jay Z top ‘Highest Paid Celebrity Couples’ list

Last year, ultimate supermodel Gisele Bundchen and American football star hubby Tom Brady topped the Forbes Highest Paid Celebrity Couples list as they collectively earned $72 million, but they couldn’t hold onto their crowns for this year. Instead, least year’s runners up Beyonce and her husband Jay Z have moved up one spot to steal the title, earning a cool $78 million between them. Can we actually just hold on for a second and try to get our heads around that figure?! You’ll be pleased to know that David and Victoria Beckham came third thanks to their combined earnings of $54 million, closely followed by Brangelina, who earned $45 million in the past year. Impressive stuff – we wonder who will reign supreme next year… our money’s on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West! [Forbes]

Karlie Kloss sizzles in Stella McCartney

As The Amazing Spider-Man is now officially out in cinemas, we thought we’d revisit some of our favourite looks from the premieres. One look which we couldn’t get out of our heads was Karlie Kloss’s one at the London premiere a couple of weeks ago. The 19-year-old model stunned in a black Stella McCartney dress with cut-out detailing, but unlike Kim Kardashian’s recent outfit by the designer which divided opinions, Karlie’s seems to be a unanimous hit. Karlie’s messy up-do and barely there make-up adds a contemporary and youthful touch to the dress – which has been worn by women twice her age, after all – and also makes it slightly more casual. Had Karlie been the main star of the show (and we could totally see her doing a Rosie Hutington Whiteley and becoming a movie star in the future) some voluminous curls and a flick of eyeliner would be sufficient to complete the transition.

Christian Louboutin speaks out about losing that Zara lawsuit

Poor Christian Louboutin! He famously lost his court case against Yves Saint Laurent, and the shoe designer didn’t seem to have much luck with suing Zara either. (The high street store sold some similar-looking shoes a few years ago, which prompted team Louboutin to take legal action…) However, while he may have lost the particular court case about a single pair of red-soled Zara heels, Christian Louboutin wants you (and anyone else who tries to rip off his iconic designs) to know that he still “continues to own valid and enforceable trademark rights in its Red Sole Trademark” and will persevere with suing any copy-cats. The official statement reads: “Much of the discussion either implies or states that through this ruling we have lost our rights to our world famous Red Sole Trademark. We would like to clarify that what has been disputed and canceled is only one French registration of said Red sole Trademark. Christian Louboutin continues to own valid and enforceable trademark rights in its Red Sole Trademark, including in France itself as well as throughout the world. A number of court decisions have recognised the strong association between Christian Louboutin and the Red Sole Trademark, including in France. Christian Louboutin will continue to protect and enforce its rights to its Red Sole Trademark which has been its iconic signature for the past 20 years. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who continually show support to our brand.” As much as we like the idea of channelling our fave Louboutin-loving celebs Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria for a fraction of the price, we can’t deny that there is only one red-soled shoe maestro and his name will always be Christian Louboutin. Whose side are you on? Discuss… [Styleite]

Why we need to stop interfering with The Skinny People

Reading the title of this post may make you want to scream abuse at me, and indeed label me a blind-eyed bat who has no regard for those wasting away under their J Brand leather trousers and Burberry trench coats. But let me clarify that I do care, just not enough to intervene by shoving an angel slice in a waifish companion’s mouth. The recent spectacle surrounding Alexa Chung’s Instagram picture that showed the fashion darling looking painfully thin has given rise to many question and arguments. Well, in my head, anyway. For I ask: why the tirade of abuse against someone who is actually, successfully making a living from her apple-slice-thin fashion status? And what of other famous posers in similar physical situation, who are thrust in the limelight (well never out if it) and regularly applauded for every itsy-bitsy (expensive) achievement, even though they’re withering away (yes, you, Victoria Beckham)? And what about the other end of the appearance spectrum? The Lauren Goodgers and Kim Kardashians who bemoan every inch of their bodies; with the former boozing and crying over holiday pics, and the latter taking up sports such as dating a foul-mouthed, sneaker sporting rapper, and regularly visiting the gym with her water bottle stuffed in a Hermés birkin. OK, rant over now let’s get back to Alexa. We know the fashion front-rower has become increasingly slimmer since she first came on the scene circa 2007, and, anyone who looks at that Instagram picture cannot shy away from the fact that Alexa’s never ending legs do look skinnier than your average glossy editorial model’s. But here is my argument: we instantly spit out against slim women, and fire off every rule in our healthy living book collection to defend our slightly meatier thighs, but what about those […]

Kids’ Choice Awards 2011: Best Dressed

Every year the celebs turn out in full force to celebrate the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles, and whilst it might not be the Oscars, it doesn’t stop the attendees upping the fashion stakes in fantastic form. With such a young and cool atmosphere, heavy long gowns and Chopard jewels were out in favour of fresh, youthful looks at this year’s 24th awards, all set for the spring season ahead. We’ve scoured the orange carpet for pictures of our favourite fashionistas from the weekend’s ceremony, so without further ado, here are the emerging style setters that stole the show at the 2011 Kids’ Choice Awards. Welcome to our top 10 best dressed list… Selena Gomez Selena was a real winner on the night in this outfit. Her Christian Cota shorts and top combo looked fantastic paired with her electric blue Camilla Skovgaard strappy sandals. Fresh, young and the best dressed on the night. Miley Cyrus Miley looked fresh and summery in her colourful strapless dress by Dolce and Gabbana. She can sometimes dress too old for her age on the red carpet, but this look is perfectly appropriate. Pixie Lott Pixie looks cute and playful is this adorable Miu Miu dress. The heart print and quirky collar give her an edge over many of the other looks seen on the night. Black strappy shoes and a long black shoulder bag complete her look. Kim Kardashian Kim showed off her killer curves in this Azzedine Alaia white ruffled dress. The colour looks great against her skin tone and she accessorized well with a beautiful Adriana Castro python clutch. This is definitely one of the most carefree looks we’ve seen from Kim in a while. Heidi Klum Heidi looked effortlessly chic in this fantastically-embellished Gucci mini dress. The spiky detailing gives a […]

Celebs love Christian Louboutin’s Lucifer heels (and so do we)

With their cigarette-thin heels and bright red soles, Christian Louboutin’s statement shoes are the go-to footwear for celebrities, regardless of where they’re headed. And it seems this pair of killer courts – cleverly named Lucifer after their devilish wicked streak – are no different. Spotted on Elle Macpherson on the school run (seriously, how does she look that glamourous first thing in the morning?), Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez, Louboutin’s Lucifer Bow heels are only for the fearless – but boy are they worth the wobble. The decorative double bow at the toe mixed with deadly sharp studs and spike heels make these pumps a fierce combination of pretty and punky, meaning they’ll work with pretty much any outfit (a la Elle’s skinnies or Kim’s mini). We’re totally sold on them – as with all Louboutin’s, they turn any outfit into a show-stopper. See how the celebs are wearing theirs below… [nggallery id=8] Christian Louboutin Lucifer Spike Bow Pump, $995 (£650), available at Bergdorf Goodman. BUY NOW!

NY Fashion Week SS10: Day 6 Recap

The highlight of my day today was going backstage at J. Mendel. Love! The hair, the dresses, the nails, the makeup everything was utter perfection. Gilles Mendel seemed so cool and composed and he was looking wonderfully dapper (even though as far as I could tell he wasn’t wearing socks with his leather shoes!).
