Ah, memories. Thursday afternoons are for reminiscing, and we’ve got a lot to reminisce about – like last Friday, for example. You may or may not have heard, but last week we took our Discover a Style You’ll Love competition winner on a fleeting, fashionable trip to Paris thanks to Ford Ka and Toni & Guy, and it’s about time we shared what we got up to on our shopping extravaganza. Following a fail-safe recommendation from our friend Esteban Cortezar, we took a well-paced stroll around the streets of Paris’s trendy Les Marais, stopping only for a one-glass-too-many lunch at a kitsch French cafe for an authentic feast of bread, cheese and meat before hitting the boutiques. Two hours, £1,000 and several bags of A.P.C later – we’re nothing if not savvy – we and our winner, Di, were armed with a wardrobe’s worth of vintage and designer goodies, and the rest, as they say, is sartorial history. Lunch, anyone? Our thanks to Ford Ka and Toni & Guy for involving us in such a fun campaign, and, of course, Chris, our tired but tolerant videographer….

As we battle the post-holiday blues and prepare for what the new year has in store, we’re still reliving what last year had to offer – and in fashion, there were enough dramatic twists and turns to keep us on the edge of our sartorial seat all year long. From Alexander McQueen’s tragic death in February to the frenzy following William and Kate’s royal engagement in November, take a look at the highlights and lowlights that have made the most memorable fashion moments of 2010. Lee Alexander McQueen Following the designers death in February, the fashion world came together to mourn the loss of one of the world’s greatest design talents with a special memorial service at September’s London Fashion Week. His last collection was unveiled without him at a private show just one month after his death – shortly after, Sarah Burton was named as his successor, and unveiled her first solo collection at Paris Fashion Week. Celebrating his life and work, McQueen was last month honoured posthumously with the Outstanding Achievement Award at 2010’s British Fashion Awards. Naomi Campbell She’s had her fair share of controversy, what with being accused of attacking her New York driver – for which she didn’t face charges – and being sued by her former agent for perjury, but Namoi Campbell has had her ups too. Her Fashion for Relief catwalk show reunited the fashion greats for a worthy cause and went down as a storming success, Dolce & Gabbana payed special homage to her at Fashion’s Night Out, and the super picked up the Special Recognition Award at the BFA’s to boot. Fashion’s Night Out (and In) Fashion’s Night Out proved more successful in its second year than it did the first, persuading even the biggest names in fashion to get involved […]

Read MoreFashion’s Night Out: Dolce & Gabbana and Naomi Campbell
These days it seems like most every model peaks at the age of 16, but then again, Naomi Campbell isn’t most models. The iconic super has been in the industry for a quarter century and shows no signs of slowing down – in fact Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour was just yesterday quoted in the New York Post as saying that she is “a joy to work with.” And when the 40-year-old stunner outshone Gisele, Karlie, Karolina and countless others closing the FNO show at Lincoln Center in an Oscar de la Renta gown on September 7th, she made it no secret that everywhere Naomi goes a large crowd follows. In light of the British model’s unparalleled career and timed to Fashion’s Night Out in New York, Dolce & Gabbana celebrated the 25th anniversary of Naomi Campbell’s reign in fashion with a 14-model fashion dance at their Madison Avenue boutique last week. It may have only lasted a few minutes, but Naomi and the 14 female models decked out in Dolce & Gabbana Naomi tees caused quite a commotion as they danced their way around the store and onto the street – famed choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson had arranged the moves and DJ Lindsey provided the beats to the lively affair (complete with an open champagne bar). To seal the memorable anniversary with something tangible, the shirts worn by the 14 models were sold for $200 a pop at the event, where Naomi stayed on in the boutique to sign them. Designed by Dolce & Gabbana the limited edition collector T-shirts come in 14 iterations, each with an iconic image of Naomi Campbell taken by some of the world’s most esteemed contemporary fashion photographers (Patrick Demarchelier, Steven Klein, Bruce Weber and Mario Testino, among others). We didn’t see all that many […]

Read MoreFive minutes with fashion designer Esteban Cortazar
You might remember him more recently for leaving Emanuel Ungaro when Lindsay Lohan was appointed, but you’d be wrong to think that’s Esteban Cortazar’s defining moment. At the ripe age of 26, he’s had his own fashion label, has headed a major French fashion house, has dressed industry insiders and the A-list elite alike, and famously brought Cindy Crawford out of her modelling retirement. And yes, we did say he was only 26. Born in Colombia but spending much of his childhood in Miami, a 12-year-old Cortazar found himself surrounded by the fast-paced flurry of the city’s style scene and a fashion fascination was born – but little did he know his dream of one day becoming a designer would result in him becoming one of the industry’s biggest success stories. In 2002, Esteban’s eponymous label made its runway debut to critical acclaim – one year later, he brought Cindy Crawford out of her modelling retirement when she agreed to open and close his spring/summer 2004 show (the pair had formed quite the friendship after eating chocolate covered strawberries together when he was 13, but more on that later), and a further four years on, he would hold the helm at the house of Ungaro. His love of the feminine form fused with his passion to create cool, intricately-individual pieces had made him a hit with fashion fans across the globe, but like any good story, he’s not without his controversy. Last year, after breathing new life into the classic label, Cortazar hung his creative cap at Ungaro when Lindsay Lohan was brought on board to give the brand publicity – he is, after all, an esteemed designer, and one that probably doesn’t want to be associated with nipple tassels any day of the week. But fast-forward to today and […]

Hakaan wins ANDAM award 2010: He was a little known addition to the schedule at February’s London Fashion week, but with a fabulous collection as well as Lara Stone on the catwalk and Kate Moss in the front row the show caused quite a stir. Now it seems that his fashion star is set to shine a little brighter after being given this year’s ANDAM award, with previous winners including Giles Deacon and Gareth Pugh we’re pretty sure there’ll be no stopping him. John Paul Gaultier launches Lingerie Line: We know what you’re thinking, it’s going to be Madonna Blonde Ambition circa 1990 all over again, and if you ask us – that’s not a bad thing. Read MoreMen’s Fashion Week Round up, Milan: Days 3 and 4
With Paris Men’s fashion week now in full swing we finish our round up of Milan Men’s fashion week from the 21st and 22nd of June. Ermenegildo Zegna The cravat was key at Zegna, in shades of burnt ombre, rich khaki and royal blue, it was worn just often with the more casual shirting as well as with the traditional suiting. Suits came in shades of peach and marl grey and was worn with tailored shorts and brogues, or worn with open necked shirts that were finished with a cravat. More casual looks had a slightly urban influence with parka style lightweight jackets in rich orange, worn over a striped jersey and paired with bright whites and sandals. But the Riviera influence was never far off with models donning sunglasses and wearing straw hats atop their head or held loosely at the side, as well as checked blazers that gave a contemporary nod towards the classic look. Gucci The look was chic and sleek at Gucci with classic slim fit suiting in luxurious suede and stand-out tailored leather jackets. Like many of the shows blue was a key colour, here coming in smart dark denims, midnight blues and cornflower blue shades and mixed with rich suede browns and rusty orange. Head-to-toe and denim was seen in the form of a safari style suit as well as with the more traditional double breasted suiting done in a denim-look fabric. Knitwear was made for Spring, done light and white in colour and oversized in style, the chunky-knit funnel necked jumpers were worn with super slim trousers in the same shade for ultimate contrast in proportion. Etro Verdant pastures at the Etro show laid the way for a refreshingly light-hearted collection that showed intricate print and embroidery alongside bursts of zesty colour. Tailoring […]

Stacey Duguid has led a life most girls would die for. After stints at Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani and Prada, Stacey was asked by Elle’s editor Lorraine Candy to join her favourite magazine, and now proudly takes her place as Executive Fashion Editor at Elle. Having met , and worked with , some of the most prestigious people in fashion, she doesn’t miss one trendy trick. In between jetting to and fro from fashion weeks, blogging for ASOS.com and writing her new book, Stacey found a few minutes to talk to us about her fashion life. What made you embark on a career in fashion, and how did you get to where you are today? I had a rather unsuccessful stint at Art school in Manchester where I was studying for a Fine Art degree, it was the early 90’s and the legendary nightclub the Hacienda was in full swing and I chose clubbing over art. I moved to London a year later not knowing a single soul. I took a job at Harvey Nichols on the shop floor and started interning for a PR agency who handled fashion label Red Or Dead every Friday for free. It was whilst working at the PR agency I attended my first ever fashion show, I was so young but remember it like it was yesterday; the fashion fire was well and truly ignited! I went from emptying bins and sorting out post to working on the Red or Dead account pretty quickly and was able to give up working at Harvey Nichols. My time on the shop floor was well spent though; I met so many people who are now all in very senior fashion jobs around the globe namely Chloe, Calvin Klein and InStyle. Interestingly during this time I applied to […]

Betty Jackson, the legendary British designer, has rejoined the designing team at Debenhams to create their first must-have jewellery line. The range, which forms part of her ‘Betty Jackson. Black’ line for the high street store, fuses resin, perspex and metals with chunky chains and grosgrain ribbon to create a collection of contemporary statement jewellery. We caught up with Betty in the gorgeous Junior Deluxe Suite of the Soho Hotel on Tuesday afternoon to discuss her new collection, her career and her success. This isn’t the first time you have collaborated with Debenhams , you also created the ‘Betty Jackson. Black’ line of clothing and homeware for the store , how did the partnership between the two of you first come about? They just asked. We just thought, ‘that’d be quite good’ and I’d already been working with somebody else , another big company on the high street , and that contract had just come to an end and literally it was the day after when Debenhams phoned and we went in to meet and it’s been great. They’re great people to work with and because they had this stable of designers as well – that was another thing I was bit worried about as well, they had lots of them and I thought, ‘how am I going to make a difference here?’ But I think their choice of designers is great and I think we all have a different voice. They’re very careful about keeping it to the personality of the designer, and I think that they work really hard on that , we all have our own little team and it gets really competitive, which is great. It began with the clothes and then moved onto homes maybe 18 months after and then the jewellery thing was natural, […]

I was lucky to get a seat in this show as it was packed! People were standing on the ledges and overlapping each other on the runway benches. When the lights came up we were greeted with a beige body con dress with bold shoulder detail. The colours were neutral but had an undertone of shimmer that added to the space age feel. Strong shoulder jackets followed beige and black dresses and separates in the form of mesh body con miniskirts and sequin centre panels.
Read MoreLondon Fashion Week SS10: Ashish
Ashish can be a bit hit or miss. You see dresses you love and then they’re mixed in with strange jersey pieces or like last season crazy pom poms. This season was coherent, funky, and packed full of pieces you’d want in your wardrobe. Yes, the king of sequins pulled off a really rather good show. This is partly down to letting his fabulous dresses dominate. The feel was 90s Brit abroad, think visors, bum bags and sportswear. The clothes acted like post cards to home, with holiday inspired wear, there was Paris with the Mona Lisa and the Eiffel Tower. Italy was followed with Hawaii, then New York and Miami. The twist was spike studding, which embellished many of the pieces. These items along with the tie-dye denim helped break up the sequins, but let’s be honest you go to Ashish for the sequins. The cartoon style clouds were fabulous as were the flamingos. The sunset dress was my particular favourite and I loved that this felt like a true summer show. Even the beaded fringing, which transported me back to holidays as a child, left me similing. It was fun, humorous and felt very right. Sometimes fashion isn’t so much about creating cutting edge designs but rather tapping into a shared psyche. And after having done the 80s to death along with 60s and 70s it’s nice to have a vibrant vacation.

Paris Couture Week AW09: It’s bloomin lovely at Christian Dior!
John Galliano sent models down the catwalk in their underwear at the first day of Paris’ Couture Fashion Week yesterday. The ‘Fever in the Cabine’ Christian Dior collection was inspired by shows put on in the 50s, and featured models in jackets and knickers, and skirts and bras. Galliano was inspired by a picture of Dior backstage at a show surrounded by models hurriedly getting dressed. He attempted to recreate the mayhem on stage, with the couture outfits available to order as sets. Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reports: “A lilac, wide-collared jacket was worn with seashell-pink lace ‘tap’ pants and an orange satin ‘tulip’ skirt with a vintage-style, 50s black bra. Lace knickers, suspenders and stockings were paired with a dramatic, black-and-white, zebra-print jacket. A leopard-print sheath dress was open at the bust to show an elaborate black lace bra.”

So last year there was Sex And The City, and right now we get our weekly fix of Gossip Girl and Stylista. But we want something more! Thankfully, Sacha Baron Cohen aka Borat/Ali G, has come to our rescue in his new guise as fashion reporter Bruno. The film hit the headlines during the Milan and Paris Spring/Summer 09 catwalks back in October 2008, as Bruno ran riot round the fashion weeks. One incident included him sucking on tampons during the Stella McCartney show and making a general nuisance of himself, as well as storming the Iceberg catwalk and sneaking into the backstage areas with fake passes dressed in a Velcro jumpsuit. These antics split the fashion world, some brandishing it a disgrace whilst others seeing the funny side.

As usual, we’re suffering from bouts of fashion week withdrawal. So we thought we’d share this video with you which pretty much takes a look at some of the top shows from Paris and features mini interviews with Freida Pinto, Galliano, Lagerfeld and Alber Elbaz. Look out for a quick interview with Anna Wintour towards the end who says that next season, ladies will be looking for signature pieces with longevity.

Perhaps it’s the Michelle Obama effect, perhaps it is a fabulously well-played campaign or maybe it is a love of fashion, that has pushed the Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown to stand up for UK fashion. The PM’s wife paid a visit to our fabulous London Fashion Week; she even had time to stop off at Stephen Jones’ very exclusive party. Where she mingled with the likes of Erin O’Connor, the man himself and everyone from Giles Deacon to Anna Piaggi. But when she wasn’t parting the night away she was on her very own fashion campaign. She has called on the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and the Royal Family to help LFW. It isn’t as widely acknowledged as Milan, Paris and New York, and tends to be overlooked. She is asking our leaders; to help us fashionistas put our home on the fashion map once and for all. Speaking about her commitment to the BFC during its 25th Birthday, Sarah explained: “The Mayor, the Palace-we should all work together to keep London Fashion Week as big and bright as we can. It’s in all our interests. She really is doing her best to get involved, not only attending the party, but also trekking around the exhibition, and watching the Vivienne Westwood show. It’s a positive step forward for British fashion. [Image, Source]

Naughty but nice is the best way to describe Bora Aksu’s show. With a Marilyn Manson soundtrack and Jodie Harsh perched in the front row, it seemed Aksu was determined to misbehave. The audience at the On|Off show at the Science Museum certainly seemed to enjoy it, giving Aksu one of the most enthusiastic applauses I have heard all Fashion Week. Although that could have been down to their relief at being able to leave the Amazonian heat of the auditorium. Spare a thought for those poor models.

Fashion week is on so let the front row gossip begin. Now we heard from someone who knows someone who heard from someone that Grazia is saying that Gareth Pugh is definitely moving to Dior Homme. There have been numerous rumours surrounding this possible move. Ever since big fashion boss’ daughter Delphine Arnault, daughter of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault sat front row at his menswear show in Paris. It wasn’t just her presence that caused quite a stir, but she had also gushed about the collection calling it “beautiful. Speculation then ensued over where he might head off to. Then the penny dropped, Dior Homme has somewhat fallen off the radar, and as Delphine was sat at a menswear show rather than waiting for the women’s line, it was decided he was being groomed for Kris van Assche’s job. Grazia claim that it is definitely happening, with an announcement to be made any day now. I’d have thought that the announcement will be held until Fashion Week moves to Paris. In an even more telling move Gareth Pugh’s Paris show is running directly after Kris Van Assche’s at PFW, both shows are taking place Wednesday 4th March, with Pugh’s venue still unconfirmed. So we will just have to wait and see, they may make an early announcement in order to sort out fact from fiction. Oh you have to love the front row rumour mill. And speaking of front rows, the man in question has been spotted out and about; last night he took prime position at the eagerly anticipated Pam Hogg show. [Image, Source]

If it wasn’t for Paris & Nicky Hilton and cast members from Gossip Girl sending gaggling teenagers into mass hysteria, I would have sworn I was at London Fashion week two seasons ago. Jill Stuart sent out lots of lace, ivory chiffon ruffled dress, sheer blouses with billowy sleeves, black rock-chic tailcoats and fun flirty skirts. Most of the looks were finished off with a fedora embellished with a cute lace rose. Aside from a dominate black and ivory palette, shades of steel grey and lilac made a welcome appearance. The ankle boots were gorgeous. Overall the collection was girly but a bit more grown up.

Armani is not a fashion designer to fade into the background nor has he ever hidden behind his models and designs. Only a couple of weeks ago he was accusing D&G of plagiarism and now he has made comments that have rippled throughout the fashion world.
