Jas M.B and Brady for ASOS Best of British

You can never underestimate a good man-bag. It’s a sign of a truly well dressed man – a significant component in the carefully considered outfit. It’s one of those staples of the modern man’s wardrobe that simultaneously hints at practicality and style. And most importantly, it holds your stuff. But simply acting as a holdall for your belongings is not enough for the man bag; it must look stylish, be good quality, and most importantly not fall apart at the hint of carrying anything more than an i-phone. Managing to cover all of the above bases is the ASOS Best of British collaboration between heritage brand Brady and London based designer Jas M.B. The ASOS Best of British collection aims to celebrate the nation’s wealth of design talent, and has produced a number of collaborations between well-known British brands from Ally Capellino and Doc Martens to Eley Kishimoto and Orlebar Brown. The Brady and Jas M.B collaboration has produced two styles of leather bag: the Marlborough holdall, £350, and the interestingly named Arial Trout Satchel, £270. Combining a mix of Brady’s heritage for hardwearing country sport accessories and Jas M.B’s understated but practical aesthetic, both bags bring these components together to offer two truly stylish bags. The Arial Trout satchel features a square leather front with buckle fastening and a long adjustable strap for wearing across the body. Sharing the textured design of the satchel, the holdall features a front logo and contrast handle for a sturdy and stylish weekend bag. Both are available to buy now from ASOS.

Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

Boutique by Jaeger Press Day

Get ready for a new lust-have label to add to your list as British heritage brand Jaeger plan to launch their new Boutique range. We went along to their press day recently to take a look at this hotly anticipated new collection as well as having a peek at their mainline offerings for the new season. Inspired by their iconic 60s young Jaeger range the collection has been re-interpreted for today’s modish young Londoner. Boasting the quality and fabrics of the Jaeger we know so well, the Boutique line adds a contemporary rock-n-roll vibe to this classic British brand. An array of trousers, dresses, blouses, jackets and coats in tailored wool, laminated tweed, electric-blue silks and edgy prints make for a surprising yet totally covetable collection. It manages to marry sixties spirit with a contemporary edge without losing sight of Jaeger’s rich heritage. What’s most exciting is that the collection really speaks to a younger buyer with trend driven pieces in dazzling fabrics and retro styling. While the pricing is 30-50% less than their mainline offerings, the price tag at Jaeger Boutique is still a little steep for the twenty-something crowd they’re aiming to capture. There’s no doubt we’ll fall in love with it, but it may be a case of one investment piece once in a while rather than a must-have off the rail purchase every week. Although that electric blue silk dress is doing a good job of persuading me to ignore the bills and buy it anyway…

Fight Cervical Cancer in Style

Last night, some of the biggest names in fashion and music joined hands to hold a star-studded extravaganza for Fight Cervical Cancer in Style, a national campaign which helps to raise awareness about the disease and teach women how to reduce their risk. In case you don’t already know, this week is European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week, and getting London’s ball rolling is PM’s wife Sarah Brown, whose charity Wellbeing of Women, alongside Jo’s Trust, is backing the campaign. We popped down to Camden’s Koko nightclub to take a peek at the pop-performances on offer and feast our eyes on some fabulous fashion from London-cool label PPQ, who put on a colourful catwalk comprising their favourite looks for spring. So as models strutted their stuff in this season’s hottest looks and some of Britain’s biggest chart-toppers belted out their hottest hits, our focus turned to what they were wearing , we’re fighting in style, after all. From the ever-quirky Paloma Faith who wore a glittery red ‘P’ hat with matching heart balloons tied to her wrist, to Pixie Lott in a classic LBD, La Roux in a matching top and bottom 80s-inspired ensemble by Basso and Brooke, and the Sugababes who barely wore a thing, their styles were worlds apart. But one thing linked them together: these pop princesses, alongside our hosts for the evening Lauren Laverne and Miquita Oliver, are raising awareness of cervical cancer and helping to educate young women about the disease, which kills three women everyday in the UK alone. “We’re delighted with the amount of celebrity support that has been forthcoming for this important campaign, Robert Music, Director of Jo’s Trust, says. “Cervical cancer can be a devastating disease and may not have any symptoms until it is quite advanced, so it’s essential that girls […]

Interview with fashion designer Betty Jackson

Betty Jackson, the legendary British designer, has rejoined the designing team at Debenhams to create their first must-have jewellery line. The range, which forms part of her ‘Betty Jackson. Black’ line for the high street store, fuses resin, perspex and metals with chunky chains and grosgrain ribbon to create a collection of contemporary statement jewellery. We caught up with Betty in the gorgeous Junior Deluxe Suite of the Soho Hotel on Tuesday afternoon to discuss her new collection, her career and her success. This isn’t the first time you have collaborated with Debenhams , you also created the ‘Betty Jackson. Black’ line of clothing and homeware for the store , how did the partnership between the two of you first come about? They just asked. We just thought, ‘that’d be quite good’ and I’d already been working with somebody else , another big company on the high street , and that contract had just come to an end and literally it was the day after when Debenhams phoned and we went in to meet and it’s been great. They’re great people to work with and because they had this stable of designers as well – that was another thing I was bit worried about as well, they had lots of them and I thought, ‘how am I going to make a difference here?’ But I think their choice of designers is great and I think we all have a different voice. They’re very careful about keeping it to the personality of the designer, and I think that they work really hard on that , we all have our own little team and it gets really competitive, which is great. It began with the clothes and then moved onto homes maybe 18 months after and then the jewellery thing was natural, […]

Tried and Tested: Dr Organics Manuka Honey Cream

I have such sensitive skin that when I’m not testing out facial products I tend to stick to a standard fragrance free moisturiser by Boots. However, and I say this like an excited kid, that was until I experienced Dr Organics Manuka Honey Cream by Holland and Barrett. I actually only discovered that Holland and Barrett had a skincare collection after being invited to a press breakfast for the launch. As the name suggests the Dr Organics line is 100% organic and includes a complete selection of skin and environmentally friendly hair, body and oral care products using popular active ingredients. There are six individual skincare collections that make up the line and each offer different healing properties. There’s Aloe Vera, Pomegranate, Tea Tree, Vitamin E, Lavender and my personal favourite Manuka Honey.

Beth can change your life

Beth Ditto has designed some “life changing” leggings. The Gossip singer, who has collaborated with UK fashion chain Evans on a collection for plus-sized women, has always found it almost impossible to find leggings that fit due to her curvy figure, and so was determined to rectify the problem. She explained: “I’m so proud of these! These are going to be life-changing. See if you’re fat the waistband should come up here, all the way up to under your breasts, so you feel secure and you get a smooth line. Not necessarily held in, but like nothing’s going to be weirdly squeezed out.” The 28 year old American was reportedly suggested for the Evans design job by her close friend supermodel Kate Moss.

Paris Couture Week AW09: It’s bloomin lovely at Christian Dior!

John Galliano sent models down the catwalk in their underwear at the first day of Paris’ Couture Fashion Week yesterday. The ‘Fever in the Cabine’ Christian Dior collection was inspired by shows put on in the 50s, and featured models in jackets and knickers, and skirts and bras. Galliano was inspired by a picture of Dior backstage at a show surrounded by models hurriedly getting dressed. He attempted to recreate the mayhem on stage, with the couture outfits available to order as sets. Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reports: “A lilac, wide-collared jacket was worn with seashell-pink lace ‘tap’ pants and an orange satin ‘tulip’ skirt with a vintage-style, 50s black bra. Lace knickers, suspenders and stockings were paired with a dramatic, black-and-white, zebra-print jacket. A leopard-print sheath dress was open at the bust to show an elaborate black lace bra.”

Interviews: Caroline Issa – Owner of Tank Magazine

Caroline Issa – owner of Tank Magazine – is known for her impeccable sense of style but fashion aside Caroline is also an astute entrepreneur. Being at the helm of such an innovative and influential publication means she’s always on the go and in the know. Here, Caroline takes some time out of her busy schedule to talk fashion, music, travel and more… Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself, your background and how you came to own Tank Magazine? I actually studied business in Philadelphia as an undergraduate and moved to San Francisco after that as a strategic management consultant, working with fashion retailers and consumer brand companies on their business strategy. Working in the US and in Asia, I was then moved to work in London with a UK-based retailer before meeting my now-business partner, Masoud Golsorkhi who had started Tank magazine four years earlier. I found him to be an inspiring partner and thought, I’m young, when else can I become an entrepreneur with such an amazing opportunity and product. Five years later, I’m still here! Any thoughts on increasing Tank’s online presence and launching a blog? We have been debating in the office what we want Tank’s online presence to be. We currently have our own project, www.tank.tv which we started five years ago showing moving images online and has had shows at the Tate Modern and the ICA. Regarding our magazine’s online presence, we are aiming to launch something unique, which doesn’t just translate what the paper version is but adds a layer for the readers. Watch this space. Spring Trend Alert: Feeling Fruity

Spring must definitely be in the air as we’ve been seeing a more light-hearted, colourful approach to fashion of late. Strawberries and pineapples are strung around necks, whilst green crystals form the shape of apple earrings, in fact, some charm bracelets are a veritable fruit salad of juicy gems! Some of the best pieces come from the high street, but rest assured, should you feel the need to splurge you’ll find plenty to whet your palate at Browns Fashion and Net-a-Porter.
