Pixie poses in PPQ

Pixie Geldof does love her fashion, so we weren’t really that surprised to see she had three costume changes when she went to the PPQ Jackdaw store opening last week in Mayfair. Starting off fairly normal in blue skinny jeans, vintage leather jacket and a rather quirky straw trilby, Pixie then changed into that gorgeous PPQ patchwork dress! It’s beautiful dress, not sure why she decided to keep her jeans on though!

Grunge alert: Sass & Bide Destroyed Starting Something Boyfriend Jean

Distressed denim is back. And it is back with a vengeance. Stay ahead of the fashion pack this spring, team your toweringly high platform stilettos with a faded fitted denim jacket and pale blue skinny jeans with rips all over them. To me, this seems like the anathema of true style, but distressed denim has already been spotted on some of London’s most fashion forward designers, buyers and journalists and it’s filtering through to celebrity world as I type. Think Alice Dellal with a few more clothes on and you’ll be on the right track. To get the look without destroying your beloved

London Fashion Week: Twenty8Twelve AW09

Twenty8Twelve was always going to be a wearable collection. Anyone who hoped otherwise must be sorely disappointed. But those who knew what to expect should be happy indeed. For their debut at London Fashion Week, Sienna and Savannah Miller delivered a collection of skinny jeans, tiny leather biker jackets, loose jersey tops, cropped trousers, tailored coats and a very sexy sparkly mini-dress as modelled by Jourdan Dunn. Boring? Perhaps. Actually yes. The truth is while many fashionista’s including myself could snap up many of the basics from the collection, this could easily have been an offering from Topshop.

New York Fashion Week: William Rast AW09

Last night, William Rast not only brought in the celebrities (naturally Jessica Biel was there to support her man, she is stunning!) but also pulled in fashions heavyweights , Anna Wintour (she is tiny!) and Carine Roitfeld (she is amazing!). It was obvious not just from Wintour and Roitfeld’s presence but also from the collection that Justin Timberlake, his partner Trace Ayala and fellow creative directors Marcella and Johan Lindeberg are pushing for credibility in the fashion industry.

Are you ready for the return of the 80’s?

Some may say it is the era fashion forgot, a decade of designs that are best left in the past. But clearly designers and the high street weren’t listening and we are now facing a 1980’s style revolution. But what should you expect? How about…body-con dresses and skirts, batwings, double skirted dresses, shoulder pads, high top trainers, rara skirts, jerseys, baggy jeans, crop tops and neon brights, oh and not forgetting taffeta (hopefully that one will pass us by).

Trends: Hit the Decks

If the rumours are true, then deck shoes are the latest must-have fashion item this summer. It’s hard to believe that a shoe associated with fatherly types and would-be eurostrash sailors would make waves in the fashion circles, but it has. But how do you wear this trend without looking like you are on the way to the yacht club?

A Must Have: Scarves

Switching between seasons is super difficult; one day it’s so balmy you can wear shorts, then the next morning you can find yourself clad in long trousers, wishing you had worn a wool jacket. Well, the answer to that precise problem still eludes me, but I’ve come a bit closer to finding a solution for day/night transition.

Style Crush: Ashlee Simpson

Okay, I am admitting this with great reluctance, but … I really like Ashlee Simpson’s style. This is frustrating to me, because I’m not entirely sure what she does (the lip-synching snafu of a few years ago proves that she receives some, um, assistance), and she’s just a little too ooey-gooey with Pete Wentz. But I really have a thing for her look.

2007 Fashion Trends: 10 of the best!

Eclectic is the word that comes to mind when we think of the trends that hit us this year. Styles came and went at a frenzied pace, some we loved, some wouldn’t go away soon enough. It was also the year that designers took their collections mainstream, partnering with high street stores to democratise fashion. From high waist lines to ballet flats galore, 2007 fashion was quite timeless. Here’s a look at the best fashion trends in 2007! 10. High-Waist Lines We still get chills when we think of that dreaded Jessica Simpson photo (this look is not for everyone. But after we caught a glimpse of Eva Mendes sporting this saucy, high-waist pencil skirt, we wanted to try looking like a sexy pin-up girl too! 9. Christian Louboutin Heels Manolo who? After years of absolute domination thanks to our favourite show, SATC, we finally saw another designer, Christian Louboutin, steal the soles of celebrities everywhere making a little flash of a red from the bottom of your shoe an accessory and fashion statement in itself. For more advice on fashionable shoes, check out Shoe Adviser for the latest shoe reviews. 8. Ballet Flats Three cheers for a trend that gave our weary feet a rest! Ballet flats did away with their once orthopedic image, and became staples for on-the-go, jet-setting gals everywhere. Hopefully this fashion godsend will stick with us a little while longer. 7. Year-round Scarves No matter the temperature outside, leaving home without a scarf around the neck left us feeling a little bit exposed. Overwhelming celeb’s tiny frames, we couldn’t help but wonder if Hollywood starlets were trying to keep warm or shield themselves from the paparazzi. 6. Belt it out Creating girly silhouettes with belts of all shapes and sizes was all the rage this year. From wide, […]

Opinions: Anything goes…

The world of fashion was an exciting escape from my humdrum reality of being a nerdy kid growing up in the suburbs. I remember when I was a teenager I would hole up in my bedroom for hours and ardently flip through stacks of fashion magazines and read them cover to cover. Not one article, caption, or even advertisement was passed over. I studied the latest styles and designers, practiced the how-to’s of make-up and hair, and stared at glossy photos of the glamorous and perfect supermodels and wished I was tall, thin, or pretty enough to be one. I’ll always remember the first time I saw the fashion world go leopard print or nautical, the first time I saw that wedged platform heels were in (which was life-changing since I’m 5’1), and the first time I saw the short angled bob rocked by Linda Evangelista. Everything was so new, thought-provoking and transient; fashion truly seemed to capture the sentiment of what was ‘now’.

Opinions: Should designer and high street collaborations stay exclusive?

Traditionally, fashion was associated only with big name designers like Prada, Ghesquiere, Lanvin or Yves St. Laurent. Each season they would dictate what the masses would wear the next season, but it would often take quite some time for these new trends to trickle their way down to the department stores at a price level the average person could afford. H&M, Target and Kohl’s weren’t exactly going to be found on the cover of InStyle or Vogue.

Opinions: Fashion Mid-life Crisis?

I’m at a fashion crossroads. You know how in fashion magazines, they tell you that women within certain age groups should adopt trends differently? i.e., In your 20’s you should embrace the latest style craze with open arms; in your 30’s, a head nod or acknowledgement of sorts; and in your 40’s/50’s, an admiration from afar…perhaps a raised eyebrow and subtle smile if appropriate. In my early-to-mid 20’s, I was a fashion trend sycophant: wild prints, form-fitting dresses, one-shouldered sparkly tops, 5 inch platform wedge heels, and Fendi baguettes were staples in my daily wardrobe. When suiting up, I was fun, flirty, and daring, and I didn’t really care about the consequences. I was like Lindsay Lohan, minus the stint in rehab. I felt young, powerful, and loved the idea of turning heads.

Someone should tell Mrs Cruise not to box herself in! She’s managed to turn her image around from middle age mama to style icon with the help of the wide leg jean. Katie parades around in her wide legs so often that she’s become synonymous with the style. (It’s pretty much the same thing Kate Moss did with skinny jeans.) But if you find that you also stick to only one style of jeans such as the skinnies or wide legs, we dare you to shake it up a little. Why not try high waisted flares? Men in leggings….seriously?

With skinny jeans and leggings being at the core of ‘below the waist’ fashion, accentuating legs seems to be key to most styles. I myself have a number of pairs of leggings and absolutely love them, whether I’m wearing them with a dress for a night out, or with a hoody for a cosy night in. BUT…I feel a line has been crossed when we transfer this fashion ‘must have’ to our male counterparts. In my opinion, and I have complete faith that my girlfriends would agree with me, I don’t want to wake up one morning to find my boyfriend or brother sporting the same leg warmers or leggings as me……there are just some trends that shouldn’t be shared between the sexes…. A Shift in Season

As hemlines continue to rise, the shift dress is finding it’s home as a wardrobe staple, replacing skinny jeans as our favourite garment. First revisited on the runway six months ago the sixties trend looks set to run and run, especially with the impending release of Factory Girl, the film about Edie Sedgewick that’s set to make Sienna Miller an even bigger star than she already is. Shopping in a refined manner

When creative director of Refinery 29, Philippe von Borries, asked me to take Refinery’s new e-commerce site , Refinery Shops , for a test drive, I couldn’t resist browsing through some quality New York boutiques. Minimal for me is often key and I am into my modern contemporary pieces so wandering round the fresh, clean and stylish “virtual marketplace was ultra satisfying. I was hoping to pick up a big oversized white shirt, unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be, I did however find this very quintessentially chic Tie Neck Blouse from Lyell ($150) which would look great teamed up with black skinny jeans and a pair of platform pumps. And this Lerario Beatriz Panel-Front Party Dress from Mick Margo ($375) went straight on my wish list…. The site is not for those on a budget, however there are a few pieces which have been slashed in price, so you can be sure to pick up a bargain or two. And Philippe promises more stores, more cities and even more products, so stay tuned….

Gladiator-chic

How To Create Your Signature Style: 6 Tips For Men

Every male fashion icon has a unique style, from David Beckham to Steve McQueen. But they are celebrities. Why should a regular person need to establish their look? Simply put, it demonstrates a person with purpose and direction. What Is a Signature Look? A signature look, almost by definition, entails wearing clothing that you like and works well for you in terms of style and functionality. It should represent who you are. A signature style can be as effortless as always wearing a suit in the same colour with men’s dress shoes or never leaving the house without your favourite baseball cap. Why Bother Creating a Signature Style? In some ways, having a distinctive style would be both time-saving and, maybe, a bit lazy. You have your own template for dressing and won’t feel obligated to dress a specific way. You simply dress like yourself, which is the true purpose of a signature look. It’s a type of personal identification in a branded era. Naturally, this helps if you’re in the public spotlight. But there’s a case to be made that it’s also useful if you’re an average Joe. For one thing, it means you’re suddenly less ordinary, you’re your own man. And second, don’t we all desire to be unique? We all seek the most sought-after quality of 21st-century originality. And, over time, among the clearest manifestations of originality is a signature style. Here are some practical tips for men who wish to dress better and demonstrate a feeling of direction and purpose. 1. Dress for Your Body Shape Knowing your body shape and how to dress to showcase your greatest features takes practice. Certain styles flatter your body type more than others. Here are a few ideas to consider while shopping for men’s suits: 2. Dress for Your […]

When you’re wearing a combination of fresh men’s basics and traditional pieces to match your body shape, you’ll achieve a classic, polished look.  The Main Men’s Body Types  Every guy is unique, but men’s body types are a simplified way to classify the male figure. It can be helpful to discover your body type if you’re interested in improving your fitness routine or switching up the clothes in your closet. The more you understand different ways to categorize men’s body types, the easier it will be to decide what looks best on you. To help you save money on clothing and gear, check for a north face student discount, as many retailers offer special discounts to students. One option for classifying male body types is the somatotype theory. Verywell Fit says men fall into one of three categories: ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph. Ectomorphs have a tall, slim build and a lean frame, while endomorphs have a rounder build with a larger waist size and frame. If you have a medium frame with a muscular, athletic build, you’re a mesomorph.  Another way to group men into a body type is through the shape of their figure. Possible shapes include: Read through body type classifications, and then decide which one fits you. 12 Brands That Offer Clothes for Women Who Are Above 5’9” – Heightism: It’s a Thing

As a tall woman, you know what it’s like to shop for regular clothes and have them look too short on you, or to look around the department store and see everyone else with tons of options while you can’t find a thing that fits. It’s just like having big feet and never being able to find a decent pair of shoes. It sucks…. They say that “if you look good, you feel good”.  And for us tall women, this rings especially true when shopping for clothes.  However, sometimes when shopping for clothes many tall women are forced to settle for styles that aren’t the absolute best-looking choices available when compared to their petite counterparts. For instance, if you shop in stores like H&M or Whistles it is much more likely that the store carries a wider range of shorter sizes than they do longer ones.  If you’re taller than 5’9″, then you know what we’re talking about.  Many times in these types of stores your biggest size would be a medium/large – which could be too small in the shoulders and arms, but too big around the waist and hips. This is why many stores are now carrying tall sections for women who wear sizes 14-24.  This sounds great, but there are still some significant issues with what they offer you in the way of clothing – the fit just isn’t as good as it could be, and more often than not, the styles are dated.  So we’ve compiled a list of the best tall women’s clothing brands that offer stylish, well-fitting clothes for tall women everywhere.  Where to buy clothes for tall women? Boden  Boden doesn’t have a dedicated ‘tall section’ but the majority of their women’s clothes are offered in a long fit, which is fantastic because […]

1990’s Fashion: Sports and Heroin Chic

Heroin chic is a trend in fashion that is based on sickness, dark circles under the eyes, exhaustion, and other signs of drug use. It originated in the early ‘90s and mainly in the United States, when heroin use became popular in wide circles, due to the decline in its market value. At the same time, most people did not know how to get into rehab without insurance (https://addictionresource.com/drug-rehab/no-insurance/ would have definitely helped them), that is why the rates of deaths from drugs were pretty high. In the ’90s, it wasn’t about body awareness and healthy habits — half of all Americans smoked on a regular basis, the opioid epidemic was at its peak, nobody would go get treatment at rehab by choice.  At this time, a huge number of films on this topic appeared. You definitely watched or heard of such movies as Trainspotting, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Basketball Diaries, and Pulp Fiction, which have become iconic.  So, let’s figure out why after the ‘80s, when Princess Diana and Brooke Shields were style icons, everything changed dramatically and the trend was a slender physique and unkempt. How heroin chic appeared It all started with British photographer Corinne Day, or rather with her photo shooting with Kate Moss called The 3rd Summer of Love. It is important to understand that these photographs glorified the future photo model, giving a powerful impetus to the development of her career.  At that time, Kate was only 15 years old, but that did not stop Day from filming her half-naked with a cigarette in her hands. These photos instantly spread throughout the fashion community, appearing on the covers of many glossy magazines, including The Face. At this time, for the first time, the term Heroin Chic began to be used, which […]

Take a look at these bizarre trends for 2021 and beyond. Pop Colour Checks Pop colour checks are a hot trend on the fashion scene. This retro-inspired style can brighten up any outfit and is easy to adapt for any season. For a monochrome outfit, you can pair bright pants with matching shoes and sweaters. You can also make a plaid blouse the star of an outfit by pairing it with a bright pair of pants. You can finish the look by adding heels or Alexander McQueen sneakers. These can be styled up or down to make you stand out wherever you go. Neutrals While neutrals have been a fashion trend, outfits that include coordinating neutral pieces are currently the hottest. For a chic and timeless look, pair neutral tones with one another. Pair grey and brown tones with pops of colour such as navy blue or yellow. Oversized Shoulder pad Boyfriend Jackets A boyfriend blazer from the 80s will create a long-line silhouette. The shoulder pads help to keep the overcoat in place at your waist and extend your legs. This outfit can be worn with either trousers or modern-style leather pants. The colours that are perfect for this trend are neutral, charcoal, and powder blue. For a sophisticated look, you can easily dress it up or down. Pastel Colours All Over Pastel ensembles are a great way to look sophisticated and cute this season. How can you identify a piece that can become one of the cornerstones of your closet, and what features elevate a piece of clothing to that hallowed status?  Many things make something a wardrobe staple, and the truth is, it can differ from person-to-person. You probably already have some staples in your wardrobe already, stuff that you consider important to putting together your stylish outfits. Here are a few key identifiers… Something Versatile  The simplest and most basic form of a wardrobe staple is something that can serve multiple purposes and fit in with several different looks. In order for something to become a bread-and-butter piece in your clothing repertoire, it has to have the superpower of being something you are confident will work in many settings. For example with trousers, layered under a strappy dress, or complemented with a jacket or a blazer. You no longer wish to compromise on quality or versatility, and you understand that having one very well-made object is worth five items that may be trendy but aren’t of as high a quality. By the time a woman has hit her stride, she has a pretty good sense of her style. And, hopefully, she has a few high-quality accessories that can take her to the opera for a night or dinner with her girlfriends. If you’re building your wardrobe and want to express your bold personality, here are eight accessories for strong women, from high-end women’s watches to stylish bags.  1. A Stylish Hat A hat is an integral accessory that is beautiful and useful to keep the sun off your face and protect your skin against photodamage. The type of hat you choose is dependent on your sense of style and your face shape. For form and function, look for fedoras that give your ensemble a retro, 90s vibe, or opt for a broad-brimmed Panama hat in felt to add texture and depth to your outfit. Cashmere or Merino wool knit beanies are luxe options for the cooler months, and a newsboy’s cap gives just the right measure of insouciance to an otherwise basic outfit. 2. Quality Belts Another accessory that instantly ties together an outfit and gives some shape to even the most voluminous clothes is a good belt. Belts aren’t just for holding up your pants. A black, obi-style wide belt with a big buckle looks great with summer frocks and helps transition into cooler seasons. A skinny belt can nip-in at the waist to transform a shapeless outfit and give you enviable curves. If you wear your belts under your […]
