Celebrity Labels: Sarah Jessica Parker raked in £3.5m from Bitten

Sarah Jessica Parker made the headlines this week after speaking out about her hurt feelings upon hearing she was voted Maxim’s un-sexiest woman alive. Granted, its not the best title one can hope to receive. Most of the stories feature a breakdown of SJP’s earnings, confirming that she’s made £12.5m ($25m) in just 4 years from advertising, movies and collaborations.

Sweatshop shame: Banana Republic accused of promoting unfair working conditions

Banana Republic, opened its first store in the UK yesterday in Regent Street, London, amidst allegations of promoting unfair working conditions. According to the charity War on Want, workers in its Indian factory are forced to work 70 hours a week for 15p an hour, often receiving only half payments for overtime. Even worse, the Guardian claims that workers are verbally abused if they dare complain, and petty disputes often result in docked pay.

Articles: The Search for the Perfect Bag

I woke up one dark winter morning earlier this year and decided then and there that I had to become the owner of a soft, leather designer bag. No longer would my black £35 patent M&S holdall suffice in my new job (it’s fashion daaaahhling). Now, this could have something to do with the fact that I had only recently overheard a conversation about handbags in the blonde and beautiful corner of my office that went something along the lines of: “£500 for a bag is an absolute bargain, I mean my Balenciaga cost, like, more than a grand. Enough said , I had some serious catching up to do.

Accessories: Hair Wars

I don’t know about most of you, but my hair is completely unmanageable. I don’t mean that I can’t get it to hold a curl or it is too limp or anything like that- rather, my hair has a mind and will of its own. If you think this sounds ridiculous, well, you haven’t seen my hair. It’s insanely thick (like, every single hairdresser I have ever gone to tells me that my hair is the thickest they have ever seen, AND I break hair elastics at least once a week).

Mascara: Imju Fiberwig

A few weeks ago, I went to dinner with my girlfriends and as usual, our convo turned into a lively discussion about the latest beauty products we’ve been using. As we covered falsies vs. eyelash extensions vs. the latest mascaras, we started talking about Imju’s Fiberwig, the number-one selling mascara in Japan (with buzz rivaling that of the legendary Shu Uemura eyelash curler). With the promise of clump-free, smudge-proof dramatic lashes at the touch of a wand, I had to see what all the hoopla was about.

Dressing Up (or Down!) for Any Occasion

Getting dressed for a night out is always something of a conundrum (for me, anyway). Where am I going? Is it raining out? How far do we have to walk? Am I going to an Irish pub or something a little more swanky? These are all things that I attempt to answer before I head out the door, but I’m generally fairly successful as long as I know where I’m going. So last week, my wonderful boyfriend told me he was going to take me out for Valentine’s Day, and … and those were all the details I got.

Shopping: Locher’s

One of my favourite things about fashion would be the contrasts (and I am NOT referring to hipster irony, which is frankly annoying and deserving of an entire other post!); pair a pretty, flirty white summer dress like this one from Juicy Couture with a pair of beat-up Chuck Taylors and you’ve got the makings of a great outfit, in my mind. This tendency meant I was absolutely delighted to discover

Project Runway Season 4: Episode 9

I will admit that when I was a kid, I used to watch the WWF all the time with my older brothers (I was a big Hulk Hogan fan). I never really got into watching women’s wrestling though because cheering on huge, as in built like a super hero, ladies wearing glittery spandex pulling out each others hair was not really my cup of tea. So when this weeks Project Runway challenge was to create a look for one of the Divas of Wrestling to wear in the ring, I was partly appalled, but also partly intrigued. After all, what could Nina Garcia and Michael Kors possibly have to say about faux patent leather spandex?

Shopping: Topshop Animal Print Dress

January may be one of the worst months of the year in the Northern hemisphere; the cold weather and overcast skies get to even the sunniest of dispositions and fill us with the desire to spend the rest of winter wrapped in a duvet. But sadly things like uh… jobs or school usually prevent us from having that luxury…except on the weekends of course. But a cure for the winter doldrums lies in a cute outfit!

The quality definitely isn’t the same as buying their designer duds full price, but if you’re a one season love ‘em and leave ‘em after type of girl like me, these affordable designer lines are an absolute godsend.

Holiday Gift Guide 2007: Tocca Candles & Eau de Parfum

Ever had that disappointing feeling when you thought you’d discovered a fabulous brand that you could proudly share with everyone…then found out everyone already knew about it? This happened to us last week after we attended the press day over at Village Press. We were so smitten with the romantic aroma from the candles that greeted us upon arrival that we immediately did some more digging about Tocca upon return. Only to discover that we really should have heard about them earlier being that they’ve been around since 1994 and have a clothing collection that’s been worn by two of our favourite models, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.

Model Profile: Ali Stephens

Google the name “Ali Stephens and you’re likely to find a few dozen sites featuring a girl whose beauty is simply otherworldly, clad in Balenciaga, Chloe, and Prada (among many others) strutting down the runway like a seasoned pro. When I searched for her, I kept clicking through the list, hoping to see more photos (really, why were there so few!) and started coming across statistics for a cross-country runner named Ali Stephens from Utah with an interest in marine biology. As it turns out, these two girls are one and the same: the girl that glides down the catwalk can also run a blisteringly fast cross-country race (albeit in more practical shoes). And the reason why photographs are relatively few and far between? Ali was discovered only last August—yes, August of 2007—yet landed on the runways of the crème de la crème of designers’ weeks later in the Milan and Paris shows.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Chevron Cars

Apologies for the late post…I’ve been meaning to blog about Breast Cancer Awareness for the past week but unfortunately procrastination got the better of me. There are many wonderful organisations out there that are showing their support but I’d like to bring to your attention one which caught my eye. Since 2001 Chevron has promoted the awareness of breast cancer through the release of a limited edition toy car. The cute car is re-designed every year and given a name with significance. Past names have been Hope, Cherish and Promise. For 2007, Chevron has released Courage and as part of a yearly tradition the toy car is emblazoned with a pink ribbon reminding us to “Think Pink. Courage, $7.99 is available for purchase at Chevroncars.com and 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Komen foundation. For more information click here.

Rachel Zoe Vs Anna Wintour

Stylist Rachel Zoe got more than she bargained for after making an honest comment about the lack of Vogue’s influence in today’s celebrity obsessed society. After speaking to the NY Times Zoe was quoted as saying, “Anna Wintour is one of my heroes, but they say that I’m more influential…….As great as it is, Vogue won’t change a designer’s business. But if an unknown brand is worn by a certain person in a tabloid, it will be the biggest designer within a week.” Naturally her comments were branded controversial, I mean no one insults Anna Wintour right? Well according to Page Six, Zoe has subsequently been dropped by her management agency, Magnet and speculations as to whether Ms Wintour had anything to do with her being dumped, are rife. If the rumours are true then it is possible that Vogue may or may not hold as much power anymore but it’s certain that Wintour is still as powerful as ever. Ah well….as a friend always says to me, “It’s easier to take back a million pounds that were stole than a couple of words you gave away.

Could you give up your oversized bag?

The NY Times ran a piece last week about the compact bag stating that, “a more bohemian set of fashionable women is adopting the vaguely vintage style of carrying a small bag on a long strap. I’d like to know whom these women are and if they are adopting the bag during the day? The only example given was that of stylist Kate Young who carries a compact bag in the evening. I have no problem with that. I much prefer to use a smaller bag at night. But to get me to give up my oversized bag in the day is like asking a smoker to quit. It’s going to take a hell of a lot of willpower and discipline! Where would I put my filofax, two magazines, make up bag, perfume, book, ipod, wallet, bottle of water, keys, pens, notepad and phone? It’s just not going to happen. Not until there is a better alternative… [Image:ASOS]
