Marks and Spencer Seasonal Show

The idea of present buying so soon after the Christmas period is almost enough to send us mad right now, but thanks to Marks and Spencer; coming up with gifts for the spring holidays has just got a lot easier. We were invited for a spot of breakfast this week for a first look at the store’s products for Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter, as well as some of their spring/summer clothes and accessories. With Valentine’s day drawing nearer, M&S have stocked up on Rose Brut champagne and delectable treats including chocolate love bugs and heart lollipop biscuits for pocket money prices. They’re also offering a kitsch pancake mix set complete with ceramic heart jug and heart pancake mould – perfect for that romantic breakfast in bed. Alongside a picture perfect selection of flowers (including a heart shaped orchid), there’s also an impressive selection of lingerie for the ladies and the obligatory cufflink sets for men, including a particularly fitting ‘Ace of Hearts’ design. Mother’s Day it seems, is catered for with even more tasty chocolate treats as well as some stylish home and kitchen accessories, decorated with a Cath Kidson-esque print. We want the Posy Gingham teapot all for ourselves..! Come Easter – providing we haven’t OD’d on sweet things – we’ll have the choice of fancy chocolate eggs, Gingerbread biscuits and cute home accessories from the Chicken Collection including storage jars and cake tins. More importantly for us however, the M&S Seasonal Show got us excited about their spring collections which consisted of nautical inspired prints; warm, clashing colours; an extensive selection of swimwear and a new online exclusive capsule collection of bridesmaid dresses, which will launch in March. While we were particularly taken with the smart and stylish offerings from M&S’s Portfolio label, Standout pieces were […]

H! by Henry Holland launch party

So we’ve been pretty excited about Henry Holland for Debenhams for a while, but never more so than now. We popped down to his H! by Henry Holland launch on Tuesday evening for a sneak preview of what’s to come next spring. Full of high hopes though we were, we had our anxieties , Debenhams may well have a roster of big name designers (Betty Jackson, Matthew Williamson, John Rocha), but Henry Holland’s a little different , he’s younger, quirkier and, dare we say it, a tad cooler , would it really work?

Lusting after The Mulberry Alexa!

Yes, we know, IT bags are so 2007. We’re not meant to want to splurge out on a must-have bag anymore – we’re supposed to go for discreet classics, or ‘stealth’ bags that look great but don’t shout too loudly or look too familiar. But there is one bag that had almost every fashion editor drooling at fashion week. And it’s certainly the first one that has ever made me contemplate joining a waiting list.

London Fashion Week SS10: Mulberry

Mulberry put on a special show for their S/S10 collection, which was held in the grand Claridges. Inspired by Sofia Coppola’s ‘Virgin Suicides’ and Tim Walker’s photography, Mulberry gave us a “dreamy take on schoolgirl crushes and fairground iconography, sharpened with teen angst. That’s a statement and a half, but they sure lived up to it. Set up like a fairground dream, the space was decorated with pearlised candy-coloured balloons and carousel horses to really set the tone of the show , and we knew we were in for a treat. How refreshing to see a presentation so dedicated to the season it reflected. For S/S10, the most delicious colours mix with contrast prints and key accessories to create a season that’s sweet but full of attitude. Colour is key for Mulberry this season, mixing candy pinks and sweet shades with neutral nudes and vivid sun-bleached brights.

Fashion’s Night Out – London

While the Fashion’s Night Out event organised by Vogue in New York may have attracted most of the media attention, here in London the event was equally fun and a unique opportunity to meet some of our favourite designers and fashion icons. With so many designers about, this was not an occasion to dress down for, but the champagne and cocktails being served in almost every shop taking part certainly helped ease the pain of walking around Mayfair for three hours in stupidly high heels. For me the highlight of the night was talking to three of my favourite men in fashion – Christopher Kane, Osman Yousefzada and Rupert Sanderson. Sanderson, who is also celebrating three years of residency in Bruton Place, cleared away all of his beautiful shoes to turn his shop into a painting studio. Guests were invited to paint a white square of card and all the squares will be laid out on the nearby Berkley Square to create the largest high heel ever which Sanderson will photograph from a helicopter, sending signed prints to all the participants. Dressed in pilot-style khaki overalls, Sanderson seemed to be having a good time and was completely lovely. Why was his event not focused on selling shoes? He wanted to do something fun and this was the first thing that popped into his head, a celebration of shoes and “our manor” (the London equivalent of “his hood”). Then it was on the Bruton Street to Juicy Couture, Diane von Furstenburg, Matthew Williamson, Stella McCartney and Kenzo.  With so many lovely clothes and people to look at and champagne on offer in all of the stores, it was hard not to feel like spending money. And that was pretty much the point of the evening. Poor Matthew Williamson was unable to […]

Latest Madonna for Louis Vuitton pics leaked?

The stills – allegedly taken from her latest Marc Jacobs-directed advertisements – show the ‘Martial Girl’ singer wearing thigh-high boots and magenta bunny ears similar to those she sported for the recent MET Costume Institute Gala. In the images, Madonna is reclining on a chair wearing a vivid pink and black puff-sleeved silk ruffled shirt with lacy fingerless gloves, clutching an oversized Louis Vuitton bag bearing the fashion house’s signature print. The pictures – which were taken in New York in April by Steven Meisel – are rumoured to be accompanied by a video of the 50-year-old singer. Steven shot the last set of pictures featuring Madonna after taking over from Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, who had worked on Louis Vuitton campaigns for six years.

Christopher Kane breathes new life into Versus

Its’ been 20 years since Gianni Versace first launched the diffusion line Versus and 5 years since it’s last instalment. But in Milan on Sunday the label was relaunched with the help of fashion’s darling, Christopher Kane. For AW09, Donatella Versace recruited the Scottish designer to produce a capsule collection of accessories for Versus and true to form Kane delivered. The collection which Kane describes as “tough and glamour, effervescent and rock ‘n’ roll, includes leather structured totes, handbags, evening clutches, platform ankle boots, gladiator sandals and cut out high heeled sandals. Most items are embellished with crystals for heightened glamour and retain an edge of toughness with lots of metal hardware. Chunky steel jewelry and chain necklaces also make up the collection which was inspired by three main visible themes ,the diamond, the geometric pattern of the labyrinth (most evident on the handbags) and the Moschettone. On her choice of partner, Donatella Versace said: “Christopher is a highly creative young designer and his work impressed me from the very beginning. His Rock’n Roll style is very powerful, glamorous and sensual, perfectly in tune with the mood of Versus, which was always intended for young people who want clothes that project a personal style that is constantly evolving” Spring 2010 will see the launch of both men’s wear and women’s wear. The Grammy Awards 2009: The Good, the bad and the ugly!

The Grammy Awards is the one ceremony when stars can let their hair down and don some more interesting creations. It’s also the time when we get to see music stars trying their very best to look as stylish as Oscar nominees. Yes, it’s a mixed bag every year and this year was no exception. The Good Audrina Patridge , Looking like a young Audrey Hepburn, this column of teal from Tadesh looks stunning. The patent belt and clutch are right on trend and that side bun looks nonchalant chic. The neckline is incredibly flattering. An all round winner. Katy Perry , Hold the front page, Katy Perry actually got a red carpet look right, but she’s got a long way to go to make up for that horrendous performance. As for the Basil Soda gown, it is a gorgeous springtime pink, fits like a glove and the oversized corsage detail adds a creative edge. Carrie Underwood , Another surprise style winner. Shimmering delightfully in Zuhair Murad, Carrie shows off her wonderful figure and quite rightly plays down the accessories. Gwyneth Paltrow , She has become the queen of showstopping outfits. Working her incredible legs, she does look phenonmenal. Gwyneth quite literally shines in Versace. The Bad Miley Cyrus , Herve Leger by Max Azria is the brand of choice at the moment. But the young, gorgeous ones usually choose a nice little body con. And whilst I appreciate that Miley is enough trouble without getting her boobs out, she should have opted to dress her age. Solange Knowles , Talking of acting your age, whilst Miley needs to look more youthful, Solange needs to age up. This outfit is something you might have worn to your school disco aged 14. Not the Grammy Awards aged 22. Sheryl Crowe , […]

Tamara Mellon reveals her expansion plans for Jimmy Choo

Fabulous. That’s the word I would use to describe co-founder of Jimmy Choo, Tamara Mellon. Now, I know there are tons of other descriptive words probably more apt, but fabulous is enough for me. She’s a fabulous business woman, has a fabulous personality and dishes out fabulous pearls of wisdom. Yesterday evening I took a trip down to the London College of Fashion for The Sunday Times Style Lecture with Tamara Mellon. It was worth it.

G-Day Has Arrived: The Return of Gossip Girl

At last, the day we’ve all been waiting for; Gossip Girl returns this Wednesday at 9pm on ITV2! Reunited once more with Serena, Blair, Chuck, Nate, Dan, Vanessa and Jenny, I can barely contain my excitement at the prospect of another season of Upper East Side drama, dresses and dead-pan one-liners. Since it’s debut in 2007, Gossip Girl has gone global, with its young cast dominating our screens and magazines: Blake Lively is this month’s Vogue US cover girl, Chace Crawford is Leona Lewis’ leading man in her new music video, Taylor Momsen has been signed to IMG, and Ed Westwick is, eh, snogging Drew Barrymore. But it’s not the stars that have most of us in a frenzy, it’s the fashion.

Tricky trend! The cape coat

It might not be the easiest to wear, warmest or even most versatile item in any wardrobe, but the cape coat has proved to be a massive hit for winter 2008. Why? because they look so damn good. A good, warm coat is an integral part of our winter wardrobe, and if I had to splurge on just one, then I admit – despite my recent cape preaching – it would have to be a belted trench. But if I were to treat myself to another? The impractical cape would certainly get my vote.

Wearing rubbish has never been such a great idea!

We all like to think we do our best for the environment; cans in one recycling bin, bottles in another, old clothes in – well, actually, I’ll keep the clothes thanks. However as far as I’m aware, those pesky juice cartons have nowhere to go, except for the back of beyond, in… the RUBBISH BIN. Or so I thought. Enter Rebagz, a brand that produces all of their stock from recycled cartons and rice sacks. I know, it doesn’t sound very glamourous does it, but the stylists at Ugly Betty thought otherwise and I’m beginning to think they were on to something. Half the Sky Designs launched its Rebagz handbag line in July 2007 after company founder Marty Stevens-Heebner was searching for materials in the Philippines for her handbag designs. When Stevens-Heebner found somewhere that was weaving leftover juice cartons, she was immediately inspired and felt it was the perfect fabric to create colourful and beautiful designs. The Rebagz brand has grown tremendously over the past year and now sells over 25 categories of bags, from the rice sack laptop carriers and the cozy coin purses, to cosmetics bags and business cardholders. The wonder of the Rebagz brand does not stop there either, Half the Sky Designs have even gone ethical in their manufacturing; Rebagz designs are produced by a fair-trade certified women’s cooperative in the Philippines. So, who’s been spotted wearing these pretties? Brangelina (probably clutching the Bringing up Baby bag – they might have to buy another one if they have any more); Serena Williams (perhaps with the Sports pouch) and of course, Ugly Betty! Unfortunately, Rebagz do not currently ship from their website outside of the US, but you can get a few similar designs here from Rubbish Bags, available at Viva La Diva. I’m on to […]

Designer Alert: Angel Jackson

Despite Launching in 2005, Angel Jackson has really come into its own this year with distinctive designs attracting a considerable amount of attention from the fashion press. You may well recognise their now almost iconic gold plated jaguar belt, famously pictured worn by various members of Girls Aloud. There is however much more to this designer than cinching the teeny weeny waists of Britain’s favourite girl band and Angel Jackson’s collection of bags, belts and clutches are certainly worth a look.

L.A.M.B: Patent Leather Ankle Boots

When an established singer, actor or TV personality decides they want to break into the fashion industry, it usually does not bode well and ends in disaster. We’ve watched the likes of J. Love at First Sight: Karen Millen Shopper

Ever since this purchase, I have significantly upgraded my wardrobe with Karen Millen pieces, both clothing and accessories.

NY Fashion Week AW08: Malan Breton

Before today’s show, I just remembered Malan Breton as the eccentric, Count Dracula resembling contestant on the last season of Project Runway. Even though he didn’t make it to Bryant Park via Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, the fashion newbie generated enough buzz on his own and showcased his first collection in the Tents for Spring 07. Breton’s AW08 presentation today was quite impressive and gave off a “tres luxe et riche” feel. I say this in French, because there were definitely some strong French influences on the runway, starting from the swanky music, to the rouged lips and heavy eyeliner on the models, to the use of neutral blacks and off-white colors contrasted by bright reds.

Opinions: Anything goes…

The world of fashion was an exciting escape from my humdrum reality of being a nerdy kid growing up in the suburbs. I remember when I was a teenager I would hole up in my bedroom for hours and ardently flip through stacks of fashion magazines and read them cover to cover. Not one article, caption, or even advertisement was passed over. I studied the latest styles and designers, practiced the how-to’s of make-up and hair, and stared at glossy photos of the glamorous and perfect supermodels and wished I was tall, thin, or pretty enough to be one. I’ll always remember the first time I saw the fashion world go leopard print or nautical, the first time I saw that wedged platform heels were in (which was life-changing since I’m 5’1), and the first time I saw the short angled bob rocked by Linda Evangelista. Everything was so new, thought-provoking and transient; fashion truly seemed to capture the sentiment of what was ‘now’.

Poppie Couture

The battle for supremacy between the oversized bag and the clutch has been raging for a while now but it looks like the fight may well be settled with the fast growing popularity of these foldover bags from Poppie Couture. Available in practically every colour from red, to black to navy and my absolute favourite the Gold Croc above ($400), these bags have been such a hit that its creator Poppie Harris has just designed a line for Bergdorf Goodman, available now at Poppie Couture.

Shimmer and shine this season…..

This season catwalks are far from dull, with designers like Fendi and Christian Dior generating a little extra glamour with some great collections. Their use of delicate, liquid like fabrics, from silk to satin, in a range of metallic shades have created an ethereal and elegant collection for a really feminine style. But… If you find the all over metallic look a little more ‘futuristic’ than ‘ethereal’ ,yet still appreciate a little shimmer, then fear not as there is an abundance of metallic accessories out there, especially in the form of bags. Bronze, gold, buckles, zips, chains…the variety is endless, in particular check out Jimmy Choo’s Troy large clutch available at net-a-porter.com.
