We love seeing an eclectic mix of footwear fashion from the A-Listers, and this week’s shoe darlings are flying the flag high for lustworthy foot candy! In first is everyone’s favourite fash chick, Gwen Stefani. Gwen truly rocks her own style with bravado and that’s why she’d even turn heads in a bin bag! Lana Del Rey’s Style: Eccentric, experimental or explain, please?

This is not a post to knock down, smash to smithereens, and then build back up a singer, who by many, is held in high regard, but a complimentary offering to subtly convince them to sort our their damned wardrobe. Considering she’s relatively new talent, Lana Del Rey can definitely claim her stake of fame, after a revamped introduction into the music industry with debut track Video Games, followed up by the massive hit Born to Die; being snapped up by NEXT Model Management Agency and even having a Mulberry bag named in her honour. The voluptuous-lipped beauty is definitely a mesmerising singer and influencer, but quite the miserable dresser we hoped she wouldn’t be. That moment of fury, sudden disgust and initial shock-reaction gasp we’ve all endured at some point in our lives came for me the other day, when trawling through various fashion sites I landed on an image of Lana at the Evening of Environmental Excellence, in Los Angeles. Her attire raised many questions at once, which couldn’t all be processed into rational answers at the time, because, frankly, Lana’s style doesn’t fall into ‘rational’, either. Wearing a graphic printed blouse (great), dark jeans (on point) a statement medallion necklace (yes, I approve), Converse trainers (comfortable, fashionable) and a seriously misplaced faux fur coat (huh?), I couldn’t figure out, mentally, how to assess this muddled ensemble. See, Lana may have a hidden stylish streak, as awe-inspiring as her hypnotic vocals, but we only get to hear the latter and never see the former. Modern-era music artists have really taken to expressing their on-stage credentials through their choice of clothing and, no one has done this better than the eccentric, ‘Black Barbie’ embracing Nicki Minaj. With her bubblegum pink hair, copious amounts of bust-flashing, a conversation starting derriere and food-inspired […]

Get the look: Alexa Chung in Miu Miu

Long-time Miu Miu fan Alexa Chung looked super-stylish at the label’s show in Paris earlier this month. Wearing a trademark heritage-girly ensemble, she looked feminine and sweet, and did an excellent job at flying the flag for us Brits in Paris. And since she’s (almost) single-handedly responsible for the resurgence of peter pan collars, it’s really no surprise that she chose to wear this white ruffled peter pan collared blouse from Miu Miu. She paired it with a cute navy check pinafore dress, also by Miu Miu, an adorable pair of black satin bow heels and a studded super-sized clutch bag by Valentino. The good news? With a bit of know how, anyone can recreate this look with ease. Here’s how: The foundation for this look is a beautifully cut ruffled blouse. This one from Moschino Cheap & Cheap might blow your budget but, you have to admit, it is rather gorgeous. Moschino Cheap & Chic lace ruffle front blouse, £450, available at my-wardrobe. Next, opt for a navy v-neck sleeveless dress to recreate Alexa’s pinafore-style look. This classic Prince of Wales check dress from Stella McCartney is the perfect shape and will prove super versatile for your wardrobe. Stella McCartney Prince of Wales check dress, £855, available at Matches. A black bow pump adds a sweet chicness to Alexa’s look – try these cute flats from Oasis as a purse-friendly option. Annabella bow ballerina pumps, £25, available at Oasis. Add to this a giant neutral-toned clutch and you’re onto a winner. This studded one from Topshop is the next best thing to Alexa’s Valentino beauty. Grey mixed stud clutch, £25, available at Topshop.

So there’s only one solution: a great pair of boots. These Marcella boots from Reiss are ideal for the job. With a big chunky heel, a hardy leather finish and a cosy shearling trim, these boots will keep you warm and stylish throughout the wet and cold seasons ahead. What’s more, they’re versatile, too – wear the fur trim turned up for extra ankle warmth, or folded down to channel the Burberry girls (one of the most coveted pieces from the design house’s collection last autumn). Editor’s survival kit: London Fashion Week

As New York kicked off the month-long fashion processions last week, so London Fashion Week falls this Friday. We should be prepared, given that it only happens twice a year, but somehow it always manages to spring round the corner quicker than summer can stick around. And so, I find myself in the same situation every season. What the hell do I wear? What bag do I take to carry all my stuff? What shoes will I wear to combat the cobbles (and which flats should I take as precaution?)? While I’ve yet to answer any of those questions, there are a few things I know I’ll need: my can’t-survive-without-them essentials. From moisturiser to mints, these are things that litter my bag, without fail, every fashion week; the things that help me function; the things that help me breathe a little easier: my survival kit. So yes, while I do risk tripping over the dirt track due to some poorly-conceived heels, at least I’ll have hydrated skin. When I get stressed, so does my skin. I always keep a hand-sized tube of moisturiser in my bag to banish any dry spots inbetween shows – plus, it’s great for faking a dewy complexion pre-party (just press the palms of your hands gently onto your face as a final touch). Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream intensive daily moisturiser, £28 £25.20, available at Debenhams. From pre-party to post, I never leave the house without YSL’s Touche Eclat – it hides all signs of the night before’s bash (because though I might be feeling the effects of two hours sleep and too much champagne, nobody else need know!). Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat, £24.50 £22.05, available at Debenhams. When my skin’s looking lack-luster and lifeless after a long day of shows, I swear by […]

Style crushing on Mila Kunis

Our ultimate girl crush of 2011 Mila Kunis stole our hearts once again this week as she showed us exactly how daytime cool is done. Photographed out shopping Paris, Kunis rocked a laidback yet impeccable Parisian style that would make Clemence Poesy jealous. Long hair worn loose, a crisp white t-shirt and faded jeans give the look at covetable laidback feel,  while Kunis adds quintessentially Parisian yet ridiculously easy to wear black ballet flats, a chunky watch and a gorgeous jacket to style up the outfit to Emmanuelle Alt levels of chic cool. With its boxy shade, three quarter sleeves, oversized pockets and on trend oatmeal colour, Mila’s Chanel inspired jacket is the trophy piece of the outfit, giving the look just the right amount of prim and proper to keep it ladylike but not stuffy. Making pit stops to shop at Chanel, Celine and Isabel Marant, Kunis was keen to show off her style credentials and in case an outfit this cool doesn’t get you top notch service, nothing says ‘movie star’ like a pair of those essential Ray Bans. Oh and heaving Loewe’s gorgeous understated Flamenco bag subtly dangling from your shoulder doesn’t hurt either.

Amy Winehouse: She will be missed greatly….

When the news spread on Saturday that Amy Winehouse had died in her Camden home, the music industry and fashion industry alike felt a heavy loss. She was without doubt one of the biggest talents of our generation and paved the way for the host of solo female singers we have today. Here at MFL we will miss her unique fashion sense – her gravity-defying ebony beehive, the winged eyeliner, those ahoy-there tattoos, the rockabilly ensembles…. We loved her because she was an individual. She dressed like she had just walked off the ‘Happy Days’ set and rocked the fifties look with aplomb. Karl Largerfield dubbed her “the new Brigitte” (after Bardot). She took inspiration from Dusty Springfield, The Ronettes and Billie Holliday but her look was pure Amy. She made it her own. From those cinched-in mini dresses, flashes of bra and tottering heels to her Fred Perry polo shirts and ballet flats, she was a true fashion icon.  Even though she’s gone, her legacy will still live on. Not just in music. When you see a girl walking down the street with her hair piled high in a messy beehive, that’s Amy. When you choose to wear super thick winged eyeliner to rock up your look, that’s Amy. That girl you see on the bus with pin-up tattoos all down her arm, that’s Amy. RIP Amy, the most unlikely fashion icon of them all…..

Leave Kate alone. Her jeans aren’t too short, they’re cropped!

As I have said to myself in front of many a fitting room mirror, there is a fine line between cropped jeans and jeans that just look like they have shrunk in the wash. Get it right and you could be all hollaback like Gwen Stefani, get it wrong and you might look like Stephen Merchant squeezed into a 30’’ leg. It may be worth a mention at this point that one of my main fashion fears is rolled-up jeans. I mean they just don’t look right. They also have the unfortunate effect of creating cankles if worn with flats. Quelle horreur. This is why, for me, anything higher than my ankle is a no-go. I was more surprised than anyone this week when the fashion police rode into town and questioned our lovely Duchesses’ choice in jeans. A perennial J Brand fan, Kate has happily sported her fave pair of jeans on a number of occasions. To be honest, I think she looks fantastic and wouldn’t say a bad word about the future Queeny. However, many out there are saying they were a rare fashion faux-pas for Kate. Not quite a cropped jean but not a full length leg, some fashion commentators have proclaimed that they just don’t look right.
