Olivia Rubin launches capsule accessories collection for Dune

Olivia Rubin’s highly-anticipated collection for Dune hit stores last weekend, and as pictures from the collection quickly make their way online, we popped down to the online launch last night to take a closer look at the collaboration. Fans of the London designer will be pleased to know she’s worked her signature prints across a range of shoes and bags for the high street store, where killer platforms, party-ready pumps, everyday wedges and adorable flats sit alongside silk clutches and handheld totes. Taking three key prints from her previous ready-to-wear collections, there’s three distinct directions – a contemporary take on classic monochrome, a playful Seventies disco vibe fusing arty prints with vibrant colour pops, and a softer neutral print reminiscent of Seventies safari. “It has been an incredible experience working with Dune on this collaboration and bringing a selection of my signature prints onto a range of both classic and contemporary shoes and accessories,” says Olivia. “They understand my vision as a designer and together we worked on creating a collection that has something for everybody – I can’t wait to wear them myself!” And she did last night – her favourites are the Warhol platforms (incidentally, each shoe is named after an artist), but more on that later. Olivia Rubin for Dune is available in Dune stores and online now, with prices ranging from £65 for a multi-coloured pump to £110 for the statement raffia platform sandals – we suggest getting in there quickly, they’re set to go down a storm. Psst – watch our interview with Olivia here to find out more. [nggallery id=9]

Editor’s diary: what I’m wearing day 1

Afternoon, folks! So the first day of London Fashion Week is in full swing, as if my aching feet don’t know it. Here’s what I’m wearing today – a Sixties shift dress from ASOS, nude opaques, cork platforms from Office and my trusty Barbour jacket. Oh, and I’m also showing off my new Daisy Jewellery Chakra bracelet for the first time – apparently it’ll let creativity flow through me. And, of course, I’ve got a spare pair of flats in my bag (London’s cobbles are nothing if not tiresome and treacherous). Popped backstage at Maria Grachvogel this morning before watching her amazing salon show (more on that later) and have just been backstage at Sass & Bide to film some hair and makeup vids. Must dash, Felder Felder’s next, followed by Bora Aksu and PPQ later. Stay tuned for the first round of reviews… Follow us on Twitter for on-the-go updates.

In store for SS11: Rupert Sanderson

If the cold weather’s leaving your feet a little frozen, let us warm your toes with what Rupert Sanderson’s got in store for spring – there’s enough revamped classics and cool contemporary shapes to keep you cosy all season. Classic Sanderson styles have been given tweaks and twists for spring – courts come in new colours, signature details have been reworked across styles and a whole plethora of new fabrics have been played with to give a fresh feeling. If minimalism’s your thing, you’ll love the Seville, a classic patent court in blush, the Gusto, a gladiator platform with thorn-shaped straps and Napper, a nude patent mid-heel pump. For something more delicate, look for the Figaro – Rupert’s favourite of the collection – a sleek sandal with dainty butterfly-like strap shapes leading into a spring-appropriate slingback. But more exciting than that, for us, is Sanderson’s fashion-forward creations. Enter an all-new heel height (140mm – his highest yet) seen on the Lightning platform – probably our favourite design featuring symmetric silver leather lightening bolts across blue suede – and the Hydra, a black-aqua-orange double platform peeptoe. 1970s glam-rock incarnate. There’s colour blocking a-plenty – particularly spectacular on python skins – and prints, as well as buckle details, removable fringing and experimental zig-zag stitching, which works better joining two materials than it does as a stand-alone feature, but is an interesting detail nonetheless. And finishing off there’s flats – sweet strap sandals in metallics, suede pumps in bright colours and a darling peep toe pump in black suede with orange and aqua accents that’s sitting at the top of our wishlist. Our favourite Rupert Sanderson collection to date.

Why we love Aruna Seth (the pretty shoes definitely help)

Last week MFL were lucky enough to get an insight into the mind of Aruna Seth, shoe designer to the stars and all round lovely hostess. If you haven’t heard of Aruna yet, don’t worry, you soon will – this was a space brimming with Swarovski crystals and elegantly designed courts; all packed into London’s Mandeville hotel. Apart from chatting to Aruna about her latest escapades, we took a peek at both the bridal collection (a market Seth seems to own) and the more accessible winter collection. Split into three sections, we were first treated to an all-black crystal fest, where well-constructed heels met perfectly-arranged sparkle. If winter boot shopping is getting you down, we can personally recommend Aruna’s calf length suede pair, complete with pom poms and crystal draping – who said the weather should stop our fun? Next up was an all-nude selection, where butterfly-embellished flats sat alongside snakeskin platforms. Seth is really trying to expand her remit, and is bringing her craftsmanship to the fashion table with her, thank heavens! We have to admit, our favourite part of the night by far was sampling the bridal collection – pale shoes that are transferable to a night out on the town. Aruna has carved a name for herself in producing quality, well-attended pieces that are built to last – we were chuffed to discover a padded sole made for pounding the pavements in, who’d have thought? – which is why, despite the wedding tag, we’re seriously considering bringing some of those stunning crystal bow heels into our wardrobes as soon as possible. Alongside Aruna’s work sat another art form – celebrity snaps through the ages by Terry O’Neill, Danny Clifford and Douglas Kirkland. Occasional glances at the off-duty Beatles, or Audrey Hepburn relaxing in a swimming pool, definitely […]

Get the look: Sarah Jessica Parker in Donna Karan

Ladies, a lesson in trans-seasonal dressing from the style queen herself, Ms. Sarah Jessica Parker. At last week’s New York premiere of The Big C, SJP opted for an effortlessly elegant look in a pared-down parker, grey jersey dress and, shocker of all shockers, flats. We love the relaxed girl-about-town look – especially the draped waterfall detailing on her softly tailored Donna Karan jacket – so much so, in fact, we rather fancy recreating her look for ourselves. Edun parka, £355, exclusively at Browns Fashion Edun’s cropped-sleeve lightweight parker is the perfect throw-on jacket for this unpredictable weather, and not only does that ruffle collar give it a bit of structure, it also instantly updates a classic piece with a fresh focal point. Long sleeve jersey dress, £20, ASOS A grey jersey dress is a wardrobe staple and a great base for layering – we like this long-sleeved version from ASOS that’ll see us through to the end of summer and take us into the new season. Beads Off blue fabric necklace, £14, Topshop Inject a splash of colour with a statement necklace – SJP opts for a blue beads to break up the neutral tones of her dress and jacket, and we’ve found a purse-friendly option at Topshop, complete with metallic beads and a chiffon tie. KG by Kurt Geiger Lottie sandals, £59, Kurt Geiger Finish the look by adding a touch of twinkle to your toes with a pair of jewelled sandals – they’re practical and pretty, and perfect for spicing up a simple outfit.

Zandra Rhodes New Handbag Collection

‘My glasses, my purse and my keys,’ those are the essentials that Zandra Rhodes keeps in her handbag, but will she be carrying the Rose clutch or the Quartz shopper I ask, ‘Well [the clutch] is great for going out at night but the shopper is so practical, because I can only wear my heels for so long and I can fit a pair of flat shoes in there too.’ Ah, a woman after our own hearts! Indeed, last night we were treated to a preview of Zandra Rhodes’ new bag collection for AW10, and amongst cocktails and canapes – and a very chic nail bar – we got the chance to pick out our favourites from the range, with a little help from the woman herself. Where do we start? Well there’s the divine Citrine suede envelope clutch in raspberry which is finished with Zandra’s signature and chain detail print, or the colourful Peridot bow-clasp clutch which is embroidered with an abstract image of Zandra’s face. If you’re more of a statement shopper kind of girl like us, then you’ll love the turquoise moonstone bag – with a chain link strap just the right length to sit atop your shoulder and with a clasp opening to a more than ample sized bag, you’ll be able to fit all your essentials (and a pair of flats!) in their easily. Other stand out pieces include the fun Sunstone clasp-close mini bags that feature a rose gold logo plate from her heritage collections, and the half Moonstone clutch bags which make for a perfect evening option. With its bold and fruity colour palette the collection is unmistakably Zandra, but the finishing touches, such as the shocking pink inside of the bags and the heritage prints and logos don’t dominate the look and […]

Five minutes with model and designer Lisa Butcher

At just 15-years-old, Lisa Butcher started life out as model. After winning British ELLE’s first modelling competition back in 1987, she was dubbed the ‘Face of the 90s’ by royal photographer Norman Parkinson and went on to star in campaigns for major brands including Ralph Lauren, Yves Saint Laurent and Max Factor. Sticking with the fashion theme, Lisa also presented the first series of hit TV show Britain’s Next Top Model and worked alongside Mica Paris on BBC’s What Not To Wear, following the departure of the (rather terrifying) Trinny and Susannah. And now? Well, it seems the British beauty can add a few more strings to her stylish bow, as she is currently a designer and ambassador for tall-fashion specialist, Long Tall Sally. We caught up with Lisa after the launch of Long Tall Sally’s very first National Stand Tall Week to find out more about her involvement with the brand and to see what advice she could give to tall ladies out there who might struggle when it comes to shopping on the high-street. How did your collaboration with Long Tall Sally come about? Long tall Sally approached me after the second series of What Not To Wear. I had heard of the brand before, but felt the collections could be stronger. As it happened, the Bennett Brothers – who turned around Oasis and Phase Eight amongst other brands – had just bought out the business and wanted to create a totally new image for Long Tall Sally, so I jumped at the chance to work with them as they have such great reputations. I asked if I could have a go at designing, and it proved really successful and has just grown from there. Plus, it’s also loads of fun! As a designer and ambassador for Long […]

Tried and tested: Naya eco-friendly footwear

So, we’ve already given you our top shopping pick for Earth Day 2010 but we thought it apt that today should be the day that we introduce you to another eco-friendly brand that is relatively new on our fashion radar. Not so long ago, we were contacted about Naya – an earth-friendly shoe company that ‘is the first step a woman can take to look good, feel good and do good for the environment.’ Always intrigued about new fashion brands (and especially shoes, might we add), we jumped at the chance to test out a pair from the Naya range and see first-hand the benefits of choosing style with social responsibility. Having looked at the styles available, we opted for the Alamosa slingbacks (pictured above). Not only do they have 5-star reviews across-the-board; they have a mid-height heel, which we’ve begun to embrace this spring, and they are available in Moonstone leather – the perfect tone to match our neutral wardrobe of the current season. Naya‘s philosophy is that we should never have to choose between what looks good, what feels good and what is good for us and the earth, committing to the idea of softening our global footprint without compromising on style. We chose a simple sandal and while the style impact might be relatively low, the Alamosa is the perfect option for an everyday summer shoe when you want a bit of added height and unrivaled comfort. And oh, how comfortable these shoes are. Thanks to the recent rays of sunshine we’ve been enjoying over the last few weeks here in Britain, we’ve had the perfect weather to test these babies out and not once have we needed to reach for those plasters, so often required upon purchasing new shoes. The natural cork and rubber footbeds are […]

Tried and Tested: Shock Absorber Run Bra

I’ve never been a fitness freak but like many others out there, I pledged that this year would be the year of exercise. Normally these resolutions fade away just as quickly as they are dreamt up but when I was given the opportunity to test out the Shock Absorber Run Bra I was actually given the kick up the derriere that I needed. Finally, a New Year’s resolution I was going to stick to! Unbelievably, 9.5 million women exercise without wearing a sports bra at all. That’s quite a shocking statistic when you consider that 80% of doctors surveyed, agreed that a specialist sports bra reduces stress on the ligaments and therefore helps delay the long-term sagging of breasts – something we’d all like to avoid, let’s face it. Shock Absorber is the UK’s leading sports bra brand. It has been voted No. 1 Sports Bra by readers of Runner’s World, was the winner of Best Sports Bra 2008 by readers of Women’s Fitness, and is the official supplier for England Netball. Pardon the pun but that’s a pretty good track record. The Shock Absorber Run Bra features an ‘Infinity-8’ support system, which offers enhanced support to target the figure-of-8 movement that occurs when we run, leading to rubbing and chafing. It also comes with wide, cushioned, adjustable straps and a racerback, ensuring firm support for all sizes. In fact, Shock Absorber has the largest size range on the market, catering for cups A to HH and back sizes from 28″ to 44″. So, it all sounds very good on paper but does the Shock Absorber Run Bra really make a difference? Aside from the physical pain endured during my first outing (what can I say, it’s been a while!), the run was a comfortable experience thanks to this specialist […]

What to wear this Valentine’s Day

After the January slump, there’s always that sense of relief when February finally arrives. ‘Hurrah, January is over!’ we cheer, as we get back into the swing of work and start counting down the days to the ever-looming Fashion Week. And then we remember that February is the month of Valentine’s Day. Whether we’re loved-up or not, February 14th seems to send the nation into frenzy. We go into panic mode about what exactly we should do to mark the occasion, what gifts we should buy and ,of course , what on earth we should be wearing. The supposed most romantic night of the year, suddenly , and bizarrely – becomes one of the more stressful holidays… For those that choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day (or actively rebel against it for that matter), we have come up with a few outfit suggestions to make preparations for the nation’s ‘date night’ that little bit easier. We’ve selected some of our favourite items as inspiration for your own Valentine’s outfit. Having picked out clothes suitable for a daytime date, a romantic evening or a night out with the girls, we think we’ve got all areas covered… The Lunch Date Outfit One: It is probably most difficult to think of the perfect outfit for the daytime date. Will you be going out for a posh lunch? Meeting for a couple of drinks? Taking part in a fun and spontaneous outdoor activity? Either way, it’s still cold out there, so we think smart layering is the way forward. Skinny jeans are always a winner in our book, so why not update the look for spring with these platform clogs from KG by Kurt Geiger. Team with an oversized cardigan, like this kimono from Bess and a neutral scarf from Therapy for a casual, yet […]

Five minutes with Elle’s Executive Fashion Editor, Stacey Duguid

Stacey Duguid has led a life most girls would die for. After stints at Paul Smith, Giorgio Armani and Prada, Stacey was asked by Elle’s editor Lorraine Candy to join her favourite magazine, and now proudly takes her place as Executive Fashion Editor at Elle. Having met , and worked with , some of the most prestigious people in fashion, she doesn’t miss one trendy trick. In between jetting to and fro from fashion weeks, blogging for ASOS.com and writing her new book, Stacey found a few minutes to talk to us about her fashion life. What made you embark on a career in fashion, and how did you get to where you are today? I had a rather unsuccessful stint at Art school in Manchester where I was studying for a Fine Art degree, it was the early 90’s and the legendary nightclub the Hacienda was in full swing and I chose clubbing over art.  I moved to London a year later not knowing a single soul.  I took a job at Harvey Nichols on the shop floor and started interning for a PR agency who handled fashion label Red Or Dead every Friday for free. It was whilst working at the PR agency I attended my first ever fashion show, I was so young but remember it like it was yesterday; the fashion fire was well and truly ignited!  I went from emptying bins and sorting out post to working on the Red or Dead account pretty quickly and was able to give up working at Harvey Nichols.  My time on the shop floor was well spent though; I met so many people who are now all in very senior fashion jobs around the globe namely Chloe, Calvin Klein and InStyle. Interestingly during this time I applied to […]

London Fashion Week SS10: Mulberry

Mulberry put on a special show for their S/S10 collection, which was held in the grand Claridges. Inspired by Sofia Coppola’s ‘Virgin Suicides’ and Tim Walker’s photography, Mulberry gave us a “dreamy take on schoolgirl crushes and fairground iconography, sharpened with teen angst. That’s a statement and a half, but they sure lived up to it. Set up like a fairground dream, the space was decorated with pearlised candy-coloured balloons and carousel horses to really set the tone of the show , and we knew we were in for a treat. How refreshing to see a presentation so dedicated to the season it reflected. For S/S10, the most delicious colours mix with contrast prints and key accessories to create a season that’s sweet but full of attitude. Colour is key for Mulberry this season, mixing candy pinks and sweet shades with neutral nudes and vivid sun-bleached brights.

Steep vs Cheap: Lanvin or Linzi?

Summer is itching to appear (promise), we had our sunny spell and now the rain refuses to go away. More than being very upsetting and rather annoying, it makes it difficult in choosing the appropriate footwear. It is morally wrong to be wearing boots in the months of July and August but unless you want soaking wet feet, sandals are not an option. Step forward the ballet pump, a hidden gem of a shoe, chic for work and play, they can be formal in black or add a summery splash of colour in a gorgeous array of brights. My favourites have to be the Chanel-esque quilted flats, in black, they are perfect for pairing with jeans, vest and blazer for that preppy casual look or a skirt and shirt for that smart office outfit.

Steep vs Cheap: Denim Leggings

Leggings resurfaced around 2006 and season after season they refuse to go away. Available in every theme, whether it be animal print, neon or 80’s sequins, but right now for us the most desirable pair are jeggings or treggings or jean leggings, whatever you want to call them…the combination of the legging and the jean is just fabulous. Okay, I agree that they might not be the most flattering item of clothing but if you have a figure that allows it these are a lush choice. As comfortable as leggings but with a smarter edge, they look cool with a vest and flats. Or as an alternative to the super-tight skinny jean look without the discomfort, pair with killer heels and blazer for that chic evening outfit. These Current/Elliott jean leggings, available at

The Secret To Finding The PERFECT Pair Of Jeans

There’s nothing quite like finding the perfect pair of jeans. The right pair of jeans can make you feel confident and sexy! But hunting for a pair of perfect-fitting jeans can be a daunting task. With so many brands and styles to choose from, how do you know which ones are right for you? To give us a hand, we’ve enlisted the help of denim expert and founder of one of our favourite sites Ilovejeans.com, Sam Remer. Here Sam gives us her 5 tips for denim perfection! 1. Know your body shape Save time by working out what fits you in advance simply by understanding your body type and doing a little research into the best styles for your body shape. Don’t waste your time by trying on a skinny fit when your body is crying out for a bootcut. 2. Check the returns policy If you’re looking to purchase jeans online then check out the website’s returns policy as you will want to try two sizes of the same style to make sure you get the correct size. This way you can return the size that doesn’t fit. If purchasing jeans in a shop take an honest friend with you to run and get the sizes for you as most stores will only allow 5 items in the dressing room at a time. 3. Check its versatility Take a pair of flats and heels so you can check the length of the jeans will work with both. 4. Try on as many jeans as you can This will give you a much clearer idea of which styles are good for your body type. Put the jeans you like to one side and now begin the process of elimination by trying them on again. Ask yourself these questions. Look at […]

The 30-year-old beauty has a wardrobe bulging with designer outfits, but footwear is the only thing that gets her really excited. Love your style: Michelle Williams

Remember Dawson’s Creek’s Jen Lindley?  The good girl gone bad, gone good, gone bad, gone good again?  While my contemporaries admired Joey Potter’s laid-back style, I was all about Jen’s indie rock chick cheerleader look.  There’s a complex style if ever I saw one – somehow the girl from the big city managed to swap sweet floral summerdresses in NY for ripped tights and revealing minis in Capeside.  But it was Jen’s casual look that accompanied her pixie crop that I’m still fond of now – a shirt, cigarette trousers, and flats – it’s a style the actress that portrayed Jen still pulls off today.
