Midweek Moodboard: Spice Girls nostalgia

Ok, we’ll say it… Sunday’s London 2012 Closing Ceremony has officially reignited our love for the Spice Girls. Which kind of breaks our hearts if we’re honest, as Victoria Beckham made it very clear that it was their last ever performance. Ever. Sad face! However, we’re still holding on to our 90s youth and are seeking midweek inspiration from the group that pretty much invented Girl Power. Some of the pieces we selected are directly influenced by Sunday night’s performance (hello Mel C’s awesome white jumpsuit!), whereas others are a little more stereotypical and iconic (Union Jack dress, anyone?) Try and see if you can work out which piece ‘belongs’ to which Spice Girl… Union Jack bodycon dress, £22.40, Motel available at House of Fraser Tracksuit top, £55, Adidas available at Zalando Pink bandeau peplum dress, £27.50, River Island Leopard print sandals, £200, Laurence Dacade available at Far Fetch Sports bra, £22, Nike Performance available at Zalando Printed playsuit, £38, Oh My Love available at Topshop Red prom dress, £60, Jones and Jones available at Topshop Keyhole white jumpsuit, £172.50, Paul Smith Black available at Jules B Pink boucle dress, £44.99, Mango available at House of Fraser Black mullet dress, £65, Rare available at Topshop

The Spice Girls and a host of top Brit models help close the London 2012 Olympics in style

We think it’s pretty safe to say that the London 2012 Olympics have been pretty unforgettable and will be etched in our minds for life. Danny Boyle’s Opening Ceremony was beyond outstanding, every single athlete made their country proud and just as predicted, the whole thing finished just as spectacularly as it had started. As breathtaking as the whole ceremony was, there were two main highlights for us. The first was the long-awaited performance by 90s pop legends The Spice Girls and the second of course was the intense parade of Brit supermodels led by Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. We were totally diggin’ those gold outfits, and we totally had goosebumps. We know we weren’t alone! (And in case you’re interested, Victoria Beckham was the only one of the girls to wear Giles Deacon, after all that will they/won’t they hoopla last week!) Huge congratulations to each and every athlete, and an extra big cheer for Team GB – you made us all super proud to be British! [Images]

Update: Turns out Giles Deacon is NOT designing the Spice Girls’ stage outfits for the Olympics Closing Ceremony

Just a few hours ago, we (along with a plethora of other excitable fashion bloggers and publications) posted about the rumour that Giles Deacon would be designing the outfits for the Spice Girls’ performance at the Olympics Closing Ceremony based on a cryptic tweet from Victoria Beckham and a more to-the-point Facebook status update from Grace Coddington. “It is confirmed thar Geri Halliwell, Victoria Beckham, Melanie C., Emma Bunton, and Mel B. will be wearing designs by Giles Deacon at the closing ceremony, August 12th. Spice Girls will be back for one night only,” read her status. However, in a sensational twist, it’s been revealed that the designer has NOT been tasked with creating the iconic costumes. Interesting, no? So, although all five of the girls (probably) won’t be wearing a Giles Deacon original, it’s still speculated that VB will. This is turning into a bit of a “who will design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress” guessing game, but we are EXCITED! We only have a few more days to wait until everything becomes clear. Who’s your money on?

Beyonce and Jay Z top ‘Highest Paid Celebrity Couples’ list

Last year, ultimate supermodel Gisele Bundchen and American football star hubby Tom Brady topped the Forbes Highest Paid Celebrity Couples list as they collectively earned $72 million, but they couldn’t hold onto their crowns for this year. Instead, least year’s runners up Beyonce and her husband Jay Z have moved up one spot to steal the title, earning a cool $78 million between them. Can we actually just hold on for a second and try to get our heads around that figure?! You’ll be pleased to know that David and Victoria Beckham came third thanks to their combined earnings of $54 million, closely followed by Brangelina, who earned $45 million in the past year. Impressive stuff – we wonder who will reign supreme next year… our money’s on Kim Kardashian and Kanye West! [Forbes]

Before and after: Celebrities with and without their hair extensions…

Hair extensions can be a wonderful thing. They can give you instantly more luscious locks by adding volume and length to your limp, lifeless and lame hair. However, they also run the danger of damaging your hair (look to Britney Spears and Naomi Campbell for proof) so they’re not without their downsides. The A-listers swear by them as they can be a Godsend once they’ve gone for a dramatic chop and don’t want to wait a few years to whip their hair back and forth Willow Smith style, (we predict Anne Hathaway might befriend the extensions once all herLes Mis duties are over) but we can’t help but think some of the ladies look better without a full mane of fake hair attached to their heads. Take a look at some of Tinsel Town’s hair extension lovers, and let us know whether you think they should stick to what God gave them or continue their love affair with longer locks. And if you’d like to try out a new look, here are some great places to get hair extensions in London and if you’re in the mood for going even more glam we also recommend these great destinations for eyelash extensions in London too. Proof that there really is only one Kate Moss!

You only have to read My Fashion Life for a week or so to know that we are quite fond of our home girl Kate Moss, but it turns out we aren’t the only ones who think she’s special! Alison Jackson, who famously takes pictures of celebrity lookalikes (previous ones have included Victoria Beckham and Kate Middleton!) has mentioned to The Evening Standard that she is finding it increasingly difficult to find someone to impersonate the supermodel. “We’re looking for a Kate Moss body double, but it’s very difficult to find anyone of her shape,” she said. “Kate has the perfect configuration, everything’s perfect. How do you find that? Some people have the torso, some the legs, but, so far, no one has the full package.” We always knew Kate was one of a kind, and this has well and truly confirmed it! Do you know anyone who is a dead ringer for Kate Moss? If you do, perhaps you could persuade them to seek out Alison Jackson… [Telegraph] [Image]

Kelly Brook models her £18 New Look dress

Looks like Kelly Brook is taking tips from Victoria Beckham (we don’t mean the whole pouting thing… on the contrary Kelly is one of the few celebs who we can always count on to crack a smile regardless!) We are of course talking about the fact that she is modelling her own designs… except Kelly’s come with a far more modest price tag. £18 if we’re being exact. The cute floral peplum dress is from Kelly’s current range for New Look – and if you hurry, you can snap up items from the collection at a fraction of the price as a lot of the pieces are now on sale! Kelly Brook is living proof that the price tag of an outfit doesn’t determine how good it looks – or how good it makes you feel; check out how happy she looks! We know the weather in London has been less than ideal this summer, but that hasn’t stopped Kelly from embracing the key trends of the season.  Take some advice from our Kel and inject the summer factor into your wardrobe despite the weather. (But maybe take a raincoat with you and opt for some closed shoes just in case!) Are you a fan of Kelly’s summer-worthy street style?

Is it just us, or does anyone else feel like they’ve stepped in a time machine and gone back to the nineties? All five Spice Girls are dominating the headlines again, and we couldn’t be happier about it! We think this should have happened years ago, but the Spice Girls are finally putting some of their most iconic costumes up for auction to raise money for Save the Children and Children in Need. Mel C was our best dressed Spice Girl at yesterday’s Viva Forever! press call – who was yours?

Yesterday’s ‘Celebrity Style’ post was focused on the ever-gorgeous Blake Lively, so as much as we wanted to gush about the TWO beautiful Marchesa and Jenny Packham outfits she wore to The Late Show last night, we thought we’d give someone else a go in the style spotlight. It’s only fair, after all. So, from Gossip Girl to Spice Girl (see what we did there?) we present you: Melanie Chisholm. Mel C, i.e. Sporty Spice, definitely gets our style gold medal for her immaculate appearance at yesterday’s press call for the announcement of the Viva Forever! musical. Don’t act like you’re not excited about it – we’ve seen you Googling the date of opening night! As usual, Victoria Beckham looked pristine, polished and you guessed it, posh, but did you honestly ever think you’d see Sporty Spice in an elegant white mullet dress? No. Exactly – hence why we are showing our appreciation for Mel C’s sartorial choice in the best way we know how. While we loved Emma Bunton’s cute style (we adore those Brian Atwood platforms!) and were quite fond of Geri Halliwell’s flirty (albeit slightly age inappropriate) dress and Mel B’s Lanvin number, Mel C gets our best-dressed vote without a doubt. We love a good fashion risk, and this white Acne dress was definitely one which paid off. Mel C is our best dressed, but who is yours? Vote now! [poll id=”352″] [Image]

Midweek Moodboard: Pretty pastels!

We may be getting an infiltration of brand new Resort collections right now, but there’s still a few autumn/winter 2012 looks that we’re not quite ready say goodbye to just yet. Mainly all the pretty pastels as displayed in Raf Simons’ final collection for Jil Sander. We’re into our pastels more than ever this week, as Wimbledon has got us into appreciating the lighter side of fashion. If you want to embrace the lightness but think all-white is a tad too boring, or indeed too bold and in your face, pastels are the way to go. Take a look at these pieces we’ve selected that should help prove our point that pastel is pretty much perfect. Enjoy! Christian Louboutin speaks out about losing that Zara lawsuit

Poor Christian Louboutin! He famously lost his court case against Yves Saint Laurent, and the shoe designer didn’t seem to have much luck with suing Zara either. (The high street store sold some similar-looking shoes a few years ago, which prompted team Louboutin to take legal action…) However, while he may have lost the particular court case about a single pair of red-soled Zara heels, Christian Louboutin wants you (and anyone else who tries to rip off his iconic designs) to know that he still “continues to own valid and enforceable trademark rights in its Red Sole Trademark” and will persevere with suing any copy-cats. The official statement reads: “Much of the discussion either implies or states that through this ruling we have lost our rights to our world famous Red Sole Trademark. We would like to clarify that what has been disputed and canceled is only one French registration of said Red sole Trademark. Christian Louboutin continues to own valid and enforceable trademark rights in its Red Sole Trademark, including in France itself as well as throughout the world. A number of court decisions have recognised the strong association between Christian Louboutin and the Red Sole Trademark, including in France. Christian Louboutin will continue to protect and enforce its rights to its Red Sole Trademark which has been its iconic signature for the past 20 years. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the people who continually show support to our brand.” As much as we like the idea of channelling our fave Louboutin-loving celebs Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria for a fraction of the price, we can’t deny that there is only one red-soled shoe maestro and his name will always be Christian Louboutin. Whose side are you on? Discuss… [Styleite]

Bright young things, those Olsen twins

Quietly, patiently, and super-stylishly, the world’s most famous twins took home the most coveted award in the fashion industry. That’s right. The doe-eyed, visually alike, stylistic pole opposites, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen walked away with the Womenswear Designer of the Year award for their luxury label, The Row, at the CFDA awards earlier this week, beating fashion behemoths the likes of Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler to the prestigious accolade. They are the very 25-year-old twins, who first stepped into the limelight on the ABC sitcom Full House as babies. With a life that started with baby steps into Hollywood, and an inevitable future of acting, fame and stardom (albeit not such a fashion-centric one back then) awaiting them, the Olsen’s finally chose fashion as the industry that would define them. Their fashionable inclinations were obvious from an early age, thanks to the corny on-screen outfits the girls profess to choosing themselves, right through to their late teens, when they began to develop a more refined-alternative dress sense. In an interview with ELLE magazine, the twins discussed their affinity for modest dressing – something that clearly sets them apart from the thigh-skimming frock fraternity we’re accustomed to. This association with an alternative style has led the twins to become one of the most successful fashion duos out there today. Proud creators of luxury fashion label, The Row (the one that brought us that $39,000 backpack), the creations of which they’re seen in at countless, high profile events (as at this year’s CFDA’s); a more affordable line by the name of Elizabeth and James, alongside Olsenboye (available only in the U.S.) and StyleMint; a site that offers the experience of a personal, virtual stylist, to get you looking Olsen-ready. The win for the Olsen’s at the CFDA’S on Monday night reminded […]

Why we need to stop interfering with The Skinny People

Reading the title of this post may make you want to scream abuse at me, and indeed label me a blind-eyed bat who has no regard for those wasting away under their J Brand leather trousers and Burberry trench coats. But let me clarify that I do care, just not enough to intervene by shoving an angel slice in a waifish companion’s mouth. The recent spectacle surrounding Alexa Chung’s Instagram picture that showed the fashion darling looking painfully thin has given rise to many question and arguments. Well, in my head, anyway. For I ask: why the tirade of abuse against someone who is actually, successfully making a living from her apple-slice-thin fashion status? And what of other famous posers in similar physical situation, who are thrust in the limelight (well never out if it) and regularly applauded for every itsy-bitsy (expensive) achievement, even though they’re withering away (yes, you, Victoria Beckham)? And what about the other end of the appearance spectrum? The Lauren Goodgers and Kim Kardashians who bemoan every inch of their bodies; with the former boozing and crying over holiday pics, and the latter taking up sports such as dating a foul-mouthed, sneaker sporting rapper, and regularly visiting the gym with her water bottle stuffed in a Hermés birkin. OK, rant over now let’s get back to Alexa. We know the fashion front-rower has become increasingly slimmer since she first came on the scene circa 2007, and, anyone who looks at that Instagram picture cannot shy away from the fact that Alexa’s never ending legs do look skinnier than your average glossy editorial model’s. But here is my argument: we instantly spit out against slim women, and fire off every rule in our healthy living book collection to defend our slightly meatier thighs, but what about those […]

And what better way to sport one of this season’s most versatile looks than on a sweet budget? This week, we’re digging the soft seamed bomber jacket from Topshop, costing a not-such-a-fortune £42 and ticking all the spring/summer 2012 trend boxes. Yes, paying celebrities to attend fashion shows is a big deal, a huge one in fact.

Sitting front row at a modern day catwalk show is the equivalent of being front of the ration line in the 40s. You have a need(hunger, mouths to feed; fashion, trends) and a purpose (make good use of the ration coupon; deliver on next seasons trend) to fulfil. OK, maybe the example is extreme but the mentality is the same: If you’re in front, you’re perceived as having succeeded – the fashion house that is. Apparently, positioning certain celebrities at the front has been costing fashion houses dearly, whereby hefty fees have been handed out in exchange for about 20 minutes of their forced smile faces and super-toned bums to be parked on the front row. A move deeply condemned by French-born, London-based designer, Nicole Farhi. “It is so unprofessional. I have never paid a celebrity and I will never do it. It’s stupid”, she told Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine. Farhi, 65, went on to add that she was set on exposing the practice of backhand, cash-splashing seat-fixing deals so common in the fashion world, even if she risked the wrath of so many of her fellow fashion contemporaries. Even Lady Mary Chateris stuck in with a jibe, telling the Telegraph: “They pay people to be on the front row to show off the clothes where everyone can see them. That is where all of the photographs are taken.” Brave move ladies and one we welcome with open arms. It is almost precedence now, that before collection reviews even hit online fashion portals such as Style.com and Vogue.com, exactly which celebrity made an appearance (thanks to the ‘Front Row’ tab on show reviews), sat next to whom, wore what and expressed what on their faces as the first model walked out is scientifically documented. Nicki Minaj’s Technicolor wig and Eddie […]

MFL Most Wanted: 10 print and peplum purchase-nows we just can’t resist!

What happens when two of this season’s hottest trends come together in one place? A My Fashion Life Most Wanted list is born, and everything on it, we want! Peplums and prints were two prominent trends to roll off the spring summer 2012 catwalks. Peplums: gothic at Alexander McQueen; ladylike at Cushnie et Ochs and pretty with an edge at Jason Wu – were championed by Victoria Beckham way before they hit the catwalks this season, and we blame her for the want-pangs we get every time we spot a peplum piece! Prints, well what can we say? They’ve hypnotised us since the gloriously loud spring summer 2011 shows, and aren’t  we deeply grateful for them! Paisley at Jil Sander; floral at Erdem; digital blooms at Mary Katrantzou and Afrocentric at Burberry Prorsum – spring summer 2012 demanded a riotous clash of all of these. Matchy-matchy has well and truly been bid farewell and it’s time to turn bolder and braver. Runway to Bedroom Mirror: Hats off to spring summer 2012 headgear

Several erogenous zones emerged from the spring summer shows: just-above-the-navel exposed midriff; ears, thanks to statement earpieces at Prada and Dolce & Gabanna, and, oddly enough, ankles made it onto the list, too, with a multitude of ankle strap footwear that showed up. And probably the most exciting of them all, hats. Headgear in all guises made headlines this season, from raffia pompom peak caps at Burberry Prorsum – a quirky play on merging a sporty aesthetic with a tribal one – to wide brimmed floppy hats at Rag & Bone that reminded us why we love summer so much. We travelled back in time to the roaring 20s, thanks to Ralph Lauren’s pretty pastel cloche hats. But when we witnessed a botanical print BMX helmet at Alexander Wang, it was as though the hell-raising BMX bikers had landed in the gardens of paradise– well, kind of. From this point on, we knew hats were going to be a major add-on to any spring summer look, for a dose of sheer drama. Take note from the all-knowing Victoria Beckham, who effortlessly paired super-desirable caps with sexy silhouette dresses and made it look so perfect and proper. And over at Jil Sander, Raf Simons did the impossible, perfectly; when he cleverly attached a blusher veil over a beanie, and made us dizzy with excitement. It was all about mixing up the elements and breaking away from the head-warming, wintery associations often made with hats. Roksanda Ilincic showed us just how cool-appropriate a bright beanie looks paired with a colour pop midi skirt. Give your all-eyes-on-me tote a break from the endless fashion people glares it notches up on days out, and take inspiration from our top headpiece picks to add an edge to your summer wardrobe. Head turning effect, guaranteed.   […]

We’ve added a few of our favourite designs to our gallery below, but make sure you check out the official Christian Louboutin Facebook page too, as not only can you view the entire collection there, but you’ll be able to sign up to receive an email invitation to shop the collection when it becomes available. UK shoppers, this bit’s for you: Selfridges will be launching a pop up shop on Monday 27th February, which is perfect if you want to try before you buy. A late Valentine’s gift to yourself, perhaps? 2011 in news: 10 things that shook the fashion world this year

Among the clinking glasses of endless mulled wine toasts, pre-Christmas mince pies and secret peeling of presents under the Christmas tree, there’s just one more thing left to do this year: reminisce. 2011 has been a significant year for the fashion world. Craze-inducing collaborations, a royal wedding remembered more for the dress than the extra public holiday and fashion losses so large the entire industry collectively wept. And what have we done with all that? Rounded it up, of course. Below, we bring you fashion’s best and most moments shocking of 2011. 1. The royal wedding dress April 29th will forever be marked in our minds as a date that made unparalleled fashion history. Alexander McQueen’s creative head, Sarah Burton, was spotted entering the Goring Hotel merely hours before the royal wedding took place, sparking rumours she’d designed the dress. Indeed, she was bestowed with this burdensome duty and boy, did she deliver! The exquisite appliquéd lace dress acquired Burton deserved acclaim in the fashion world, culminating in an unsurprisingly big win at the British Fashion Awards last month.  A big year for Sarah Burton – an even bigger year for fashion. 2. John Galliano – Dismissal from Dior and namesake label Probably the most gulp-inducing, tear-jerking headline to emerge from the fashion world this year was the dismissal of Dior design master, John Galliano. Arrested in a Parisian cafe after allegedly assaulting and racially abusing a couple using anti-Semitic remarks, the allegations against the couture creator were all founded in court, resulting in his rapid fall though the echelons of the very industry that homed him. His immediate suspension from Dior, and later from his namesake label, sparked an emotional outcry amongst Galliano’s closest industry friends. Whilst the hunt for his replacement is said to be in its final […]

BFAs 2011: the best dressed

Awards ceremonies are famed for focusing on the outfits of the celebrity guests just as much as the winners of the big prizes themselves, which was very much the case for last night’s British Fashion Awards at the Savoy Hotel in London. Most of the guests in attendance paid homage to British designers, which was after all, what the whole evening was about. We imagine the celebs agonised twice as much over their wardrobe choices, as they knew they would be judged even more than usual… and they weren’t wrong. We’ve put all the guests under the microscope and picked out our ten best dressed from the evening. We have to say, the decision was difficult, as most of the attendees pulled their wardrobe choices out the bag and didn’t disappoint. In no particular order, here’s our cream of the crop: Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham   Kate Hudson in Stella McCartney   Alexa Chung in Christopher Kane   Olivia Palermo in Matthew Williamson   Tali Lennox in Mulberry   Kristen McMenamy in Alexander McQueen   Georgia May Jagger in Julien Macdonald   Poppy Delevigne in Matthew Williamson   Amber Le Bon in Peter Pilotto   Laura Bailey in Burberry

Five minutes with Lady Gaga’s fave shoe designer, Lungta de Fancy

Despite Lungta De Fancy designer Mai Marimoto being on her way to celebrating the 10th anniversary of the brand, penning a book and branching out into lingerie in the next coming months, the Central Saint Martins graduate remains a humble and fuss-free designer with a true passion and talent for her work – and a desire to please every one of her shoppers. And, since we mention it, those shoppers happen to include some of fashion’s most famous faces from Lady Gaga to Victoria Beckham and Rihanna (and even a royal, too). The appeal, it seems, is her ability to meet every girl’s needs. You can find Lungta De Fancy in London’s New Bond Street, Knightsbridge and St Christopher’s Place, which is where we caught up with the designer last week as part of the fabulous Thank You Thursdays shopping event. Find out what Mai Marimoto told us about her inspirations, her plans for the label, and those Lady Gaga shoes…   How do you manage to balance getting the maximum out of your creativity and keeping the prices down to (relatively) affordable prices? I understand that every customer is special so I wouldn’t mind if someone came up to me and said ‘I love this’, but it needs to be a bit different here so each item can be individual if that’s how a lady wants it. Every lady is something special and everyone has different figures. For three of our stores we do free alterations so we like to make sure it fits the client perfectly before their special event. Like this client that’s come in today – she thinks the dress is a little too long so we are fixing it to how she likes for no extra cost. London isn’t the only place you have a […]
