What we really thought of Kanye West’s first fashion collection

I must admit that, perhaps unlike others, when I first heard Kanye West was launching a womenswear line, I was rather excited. Not excited in the way that Miu Miu’s glitter boots send me into total sartorial meltdown, or in the same way that the fashion world is waiting to hear who’s replacing Galliano, but in a way that I’m utterly intrigued and entertained by the idea that a jumped-up hip hop star who likes floor-length fur coats and excessive bling could make a go of it in another competitive creative industry. Of course I had my doubts – one only has to look at Lindsay Lohan’s disastrous streak at Emanuel Ungaro to see that celebrity lines are ill-fated – but I also had hopes of having another Victoria Beckham surprise that sent the industry spinning on the very tables it turns on. And so it was that Kanye West presented his first fashion collection at Paris Fashion Week on Saturday. He chose Lycée Henri IV, the prestigious public secondary school in the capital’s Latin quarter, to debut his designs, and invited an impressive list of no more than 100 guests who would sit on two single rows either side of the runway. For all Kanye’s egotistical ways, it was a humble beginning to his career in fashion, and had his collection lived up to the calibre of its high-profile audience – Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld, Alexander Wang, Ciara and the Olsen twins all sat front row – this could have been quite the fashion moment. Unfortunately, Kanye’s collection was everything it shouldn’t have been, but it wasn’t without effort. The hip-hop star – a regular fashion front-rower and fan, let’s not forget – seeked advice from London designer Louise Goldin after his attempt to enrole at Central Saint Martins […]

15 things we love from New York Fashion Week

After a week of shows, New York Fashion Week is winding down to a close. We’ve applauded Victoria Beckham, ooh-ed and ahh-ed at Alexander Wang, gawped in awe of Oscar de la Renta’s sheer volume and spied on the FROW action – and loads of stuff in between. Not without good cause, of course – we’ve sifted out the boring bits to bring you the best stuff from the stalls. Here’s 15 things we love from New York Fashion Week’s spring/summer 2012 shows. 1. Lusting after Cheryl Cole’s Swarovski Amazing Blush sunglasses

Unfortunately, Cheryl Cole has had more than her fair share of reasons to hide those doe-eyes behind tinted discs. A failed rekindling of love with a cheating ex-spouse, and being at the receiving end of Simon Cowell’s boot after being replaced on the U.S. X Factor by arch nemesis Nicole Scherzinger, anyone would want to hide! But jetting of across the pond with a bid to turn her life around doesn’t mean she’s fallen off our style radar – even if she is guilty of nation betrayal! Cheryl made quite an entrance as she landed at LAX airport sporting a pair of a Swarovski’s Amazing Blush sunglasses from their fall/winter 2011 Wings of Fantasy collection. Mimicking crystals, the geometric cut frames add a definitive sparkle to a casual look as perfectly demonstrated by Cheryl’s jeans and shearling gilet combo. Also available in brown, black and crystal, the Amazing Blush sunglasses with dusky, graduated lenses perfectly mirror Cheryl’s sense of style: playful with a hint of sophistication. Kanye West, Tinie Tempah and Victoria Beckham are responsible for the meteoric rise of humble sunglasses from an article of necessity in sunnier climes, to something of a style requisite for any occasion, day or night. And if we can look as good as Cheryl, we’re definitely wearing these sunglasses at night. Swarovski Amazing Blush sunglasses, £255.

Forget school rucksacks, we’re talking the $39,000 croc backpack

A special breed of ‘superbag’ is emerging. Boxy, dominant creations, usually manufactured at the expense of an exotic animal facing the guillotine seem to be regular residents on the arms of a growing number of influential (read: super-rich) beings. Handbags, to some extent can be classed as ‘tagalongs’ to a killer outfit; something to act as the stopgap and make your hands look busy while your outfit claims its rightful limelight. But the superbag is quite the antithesis to this toned down theory. Unless you possess the sartorial iciness of Victoria Beckham and insist on ALWAYS dressing for the occasion, the superbag demands a more luxe-meets-lounge affair. And so was confirmed by one half of the Olsen set. Ashley Olsen was spotted with the priciest offering from her first handbag line for their label, The Row – a $39,000 croc backpack- looking relaxed in jeans and an oversized shirt. Tapping in to the high-end accessories market, the swamp coloured ‘back candy’ comes complete with gold hardware at the toggle, and being the costliest item in the debut handbag line – which was unveiled at Barney’s in New York last week – its cheapest version cashes in at a skimpier and far more acceptable $4,700! You may have come to tire of our recent affinity with ridiculously expensive handbags, and of course their occasional thrashing; but when a 90’s accessory makes a comeback, that too with a price tag enough to buy two mid-sized cars in the UK, it’s only fair to cough up a few handbag concerns. Now we’re certainly fans of the Olsen’s label and fashion being cyclical, but we’re not convinced or excited enough to trade in our cost effective vintage backpacks in order to sling an excruciatingly costly reptile over our shoulders. We’ll leave it to the […]

Royal Wedding Fashion: who wore what

In case you missed it (er, where have you been?), Prince William and Kate Middleton got married on Friday in what was, quite possibly, the grandest ceremony we’ve ever witnessed. Pulling out all the pageantry and pearls, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, as they’re now known, celebrated the most-talked about event of the century in true regal style – but they weren’t the only ones who made the effort. Guests – including the royal family and those sitting high enough up on the social ladder to be invited – put on a pretty spectacular performance in the sartorial department with enough fascinators to form a faction, and naturally, our eyes were cast firmly over the fashion spotlight. Here’s our run-down of who wore what to the royal wedding… Pippa Middleton Maid of honour and sister of Kate, Pippa wore a white silk Alexander McQueen dress designed by Sarah Burton. With a scooped cowl neck and delicate lace trim – not to mention an incredibly pert bum – she was the envy of pretty much every woman in the world (except, perhaps, for Kate). Carole Middleton Kate’s mum opted for a powder blue dress coat by Catherine Walker, which sat wonderfully against her skin and matching hat – a proud mother and a proud choice. The Queen Dressed head to toe in lemon, Queen Elizabeth chose a matching dress and overcoat by Angela Kelly. Who knew the Queen was so on-trend? Camilla Parker Bowles Camilla Parker Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall, chose a pale blue and nude gradient look from Anna Valentine, the designer who created her 2005 wedding dress when she married Prince Charles. Princess Eugenie & Beatrice Princess Eugenie opted for a blue Vivienne Westwood dress which unfortunately did little to flatter her figure whilst her sister opted for […]

Update: what everyone else will be wearing at the royal wedding

So the Beckhams have flown in to town for the Royal wedding, which means if you’re not excited already, it’s time to get suitably stoked. And if there’s one thing we’re more almost as excited about as what Kate will wear, it’s what the guests will pull out – especially as Victoria‘s been stressing over dressing her bump. So if you missed what everyone else will be wearing to the royal wedding, here’s an update: Victoria Beckham – she’s not spilled the beans, but it’s more than likely she’ll wear one of her own designs with a hat courtesy of millinery friend Philip Treacy.   Anya Hindmarch – the designer’s chosen a chic and classic look from Emilia Wickstead.   Tamara Mellon – her dress is unknown, but she’ll be wearing Jimmy Choo shoes, naturally.   Camilla Duchess of Cornwall – Camilla will be wearing a dress by Anna Valentine, the designer who created her wedding dress in 2005 when she married Prince Charles.   Sara Parker-Bowles -SPB will be wearing a look from London-based designer Osman.   Viscountess Serena Linley – lucky girl, she’ll be wearing Roland Mouret with Manolo Blahnik shoes, an Anya Hindmarch clutch and a hat by Stephen Jones.   Lady Helen Taylor – she’s chosen a dress from fashion favourite Erdem   Chelsea Davy – Prince Harry’s ex (yes!) will be wearing Italian label Alberta Ferretti.

Love or Hate: Cacharel tinted lens sunglasses

There’s definitely been a change in season over the past couple of weeks and, when the weather gets brighter, everyone’s attention turns to sunglasses. Probably my favourite summer accessory, the humble pair of shades can instantly change a look and gives a sense of swagger to even shyest amongt us. Every season sparks a new fascination in style; gold aviators, Victoria Beckham-style mega shades and lest we forget the year of the ubiquitous Ray Ban Wayfarer. But this year, I say banish all thoughts of tracking down the must-have pair because, my friend, this is the year of the funglasses. These Cacharel tinted sunglasses in bright pink are the most carefree and fashionable way to stay in the shade this summer. Their rounded shape and quirky colour give them a sense of retro-cool that no bug-eyed pair could ever achieve. They remind me of shades that Katy Perry would wear or, one of my personal cult fashion icons, Alabama Worley from the True Romance. Pair with a cute floral playsuit or high-waisted shorts and blouse for a killer nostalgic look. Add a slick of bright red lippie and you’ve just earned yourself a one-way ticket to retro-ville.   Cacharel Tinted Lens Sunglasses, £325, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Love or Hate: Project D v-neck tulle dress

I have nothing against the whole celebrity designer circuit. Victoria Beckham’s collections get better every season. The Olsen’s Elizabeth and James label is a real breath of fresh air. Even Kate Moss’s collection for Topshop was groundbreaking in its own right. So when a new celeb designer comes along we should surely give them the benefit of the doubt and view their work with an open mind. Step forward Dannii Minogue’s Project D collection. On the whole, her designs with business partner Tabitha Somerset Webb are quite good, apart from this V-neck tulle dress. Dannii, I can forgive the dodgy early singing career, I can forgive the stint on Home and Away, but I cannot forgive this dress. I would feel like a tulle nightmare walking around in this – the metallic gold flowers, shiny cord and black beads just make it too fussy for my liking. In general, I am pro-bows but this one is just too prissy and the high-collar reminds me of Princess Anne on a royal visit. Sorry Dannii, love you on X Factor and you rock those M&S ads, but you would never get me in this dress. Project D v-neck tulle dress, £365, available at Matches. BUY NOW!

Katie Holmes’ New York street style

Remember a few years ago when Victoria Beckham befriended Katie Holmes and Katie sliced her hair off into that razor sharp bob and started being uber adventerous with her wardrobe? Yeah, us neither. It feels like an age ago, and since, Katie has gone from fashionable to frumpy. So imagine our surprise when we saw photos of Katie Holmes not only looking her age (she’s only 34, by the way) but looking totally fabulous as well. Arriving back at her apartment in Manhattan last week, Katie wore leather trousers, a peacock green pussy-bow blouse and a long-line black cardigan. And accessorising with black court shoes and a matching black shoulder bag, she was the epitome of classic no-nonsense New York style. We’re glad to see Katie has got her fashion mojo back (and that she’s obviously found a great hairstylist – look at that shine!). But what do you think of Katie’s look: dazzling or dull? Kate Beckinsale’s easy airport chic

Victoria Beckham once said she uses the airport as her own runway and it seems BFF Kate Beckinsale agrees. Arriving at Vancouver International Airport to begin filming Underworld IV earlier this week, the British actress looked effortlessly polished in a white mac, jeans and oversized sunglasses. Stepping off an airplane with perfectly coiffed hair and glowing skin is no easy feat, but we can definitely all learn something from Ms Beckinsale’s outfit. A mac is an easy, fail-safe cover up that can make the dullest of outfits look chic – she could have an old holey jumper under there, who knows? – whilst the dark sunglasses shield tired aeroplane eyes. She managed to match her oversized tote to her accessories and to the buttons on her coat, pulling it all together without looking twee. We’ll give it a go next time but somehow we still don’t think we’ll arrive at the airport looking as pretty as Kate does. [poll id=”53″]

Do you remember?: trucker hats

Ever look back and wonder why you wore that? So do we. This week we’re casting our minds back to the trends we wish we’d never laid eyes on, the one hit wonders we wish we’d never worn, and the ones we’re well-rid of. Straw boaters, trilbys, bowler hats – trendy headwear comes and goes, usually depending on the season and who the hottest indie band of the moment is (thank the Kooks for the straw trilby). But as floppy Seventies hats become the only hat to be seen in this season, it’s hard to believe that, once upon a time, trucker caps were ever the hat of choice. Back in the early Noughties every celeb from Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton to Ashton Kutcher and David Beckham were seen sporting them. Originally worn by American lorry drivers, the hats generally featured “witty” slogans or cartoon designs in bright colours and overly padded fabrics. They weren’t the most flattering of hats, yet they still somehow gained a loyal A-list following – and still do in some cases (Britney Spears and the Jersey Shore cast, we’re talking to you). Even uber-polished and preened Victoria Beckham regularly donned a trucker cap over her long extensions back in her WAG days – we bet she turns red at the mere memory now. This is one trend we truly hope never resurfaces – red-neck chic doesn’t even have a ring to it.

British Fashion Awards 2010: what they wore

The fashionistas were out in full force last night as London’s Savoy Hotel and Theatre played host to this year’s British Fashion Awards – and boy did the stars dress to impress. So sit back, relax, and enjoy our pick of the crème de la crème of last night’s best dressed. First up is Naomi Campbell who wore a stunning full length black sheer gown, complete with matching faux fur shrug – all courtesy of close friend Alexander McQueen; an honouring tribute to the late fashion designer who died in February this year. Following in the British fashion footsteps was young Hollywood starlet Emma Roberts in a fun and flirty Julien McDonald party frock – the youthful black and blue glitzy design proved an utterly perfect choice for the little star. Picking up the British Style Award on the night was the ever fashionable Alexa Chung, wearing an SS11 pastel pink Chanel frock with ostrich feather trim – Ms. Chung certainly proved her style credentials were worthy of recognition. Top models were also undoubtedly dressed to perfection, with Lara Stone in Calvin Klein, Claudia Schiffer in Mary Katrantzou and the gorgeous Daisy Lowe in a gothic Elie Saab number – it just goes to show Britain certainly knows how to create some serious sartorial statements. Last but not least, and possibly our favourite of them all, is the beautiful Victoria Beckham wearing one of her own designs to last night’s fashion Oscars – the first of which she’s been nominated for. The highly-praised fashion designer has come a long way since her former Spice Girl days, wouldn’t you agree? So well done ladies, here’s to an super stylish 2010 – all we can say now is roll on next year.

Cheryl Cole in Anya Hindmarch at Cannes

As if we needed another reason to envy Cheryl Cole. The gorgeous X Factor judge stepped out in Cannes yesterday with a pale gold Anya Hindmarch Marano clutch, before going on to perform at a film festival after-party. Looking summery and sophisticated in the French Riviera, the Girls Aloud member teamed her luxurious, suede-lined clutch with Victoria Beckham-esque sunglasses, pretty pastels and – one of our favourite items for spring – a white blazer. The evening box clutch from Anya Hindmarch is a classic in the making, adding instant glam to the simplest of ensembles. Lunchtime buy: Lipsy Ruched Shoulder Mac

Five minutes with William Tempest

Fashion can make stars as quickly as it breaks them, and over the past couple of years few stars have risen higher or shone brighter than young challenger to the British fashion crown William Tempest. And last year was a particularly phenomenal one for the 24 year old designer, who was working for another great British fashion name, Giles Deacon, before he had even graduated for the London College of Fashion. Having launched his own label in 2008, after a stint working for Jean Charles de Castelbajac and dressing Madonna, Tempest was selected to show at London’s Fashion Fringe event and went on to win the Vauxhall Fashion Scout Merit Award in 2009 allowing him to hold his first solo catwalk show – the Tudor themed The Golden Age – which won over pretty much every critic and secured his place as one of the hottest names in London. We caught up with Tempest in the run up to London Fashion Week to find out more about what we can expect to see from this bright young designer in 2010… 2009 seemed to be a pretty amazing year for you – what were the highlights and low lights?
