The arrival of the New Year is a better time than any to embark on a new beauty regime. You might think that firming creams are the preserve of older women, although beauty therapists suggest that it’s much better to start using these products in your late-twenties to prevent the onset of ageing. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Elaine Mills, Marketing Manager for the Sensai brand, said: “more and more women [are] looking to use a firming product as a preventative measure against the signs of ageing and not wait until the symptoms had set in.” If you’re unsure about the benefits of using these products, or which one you should opt for, take a look at this simple guide. How do they work? Firming creams are designed to target areas which are susceptible to sagging and loose skin, like the neck and areas around the eyes. While cheaper products will usually just moisturise your skin, more exclusive brands use ingredients which boost the body’s production of collagen and increase elasticity – reducing the appearance of the wrinkles and loose skin. Which one should I buy? The product you opt for will all depend on which areas of your body you want to see the most changes. For example, NeoStrata’s Triple Firming Cream from Pharmacy At Hand is designed specifically for the neck, to tighten skin and exfoliate dead skin cells. It stands to reason that your body, which doesn’t suffer from as much exposure to the sun as your face and hands, is less susceptible to wrinkling and sagging. Using a cheap and cheerful moisturiser is enough to keep things soft and toned, and of course, wearing a high-factor sun cream when you do sunbathe is a must. What products should I use it with? A firming cream is […]

Steep vs. Cheap: Houndstooth-print coat
Spy the snowstorm this morning? Rather, did you survive it? Well, given spring hasn’t fully sprung, yet, we’re still hanging onto our toasty, winter-warmer essentials. Yes, that involves a rather trusty and chill-proof coat – but one that doesn’t compromise on style in the slightest. If you’ve been searching for that winning combination, then look no further than our outerwear finds for this week’s Steep vs. Cheap. Coming in at the pricey end is the Mosley coat by alice + olivia (£250). We’re totally digging the houndstooth print (very Sixties), and can’t quite get over the snug factor! The cocoon cut feels perfect for now, while the look-at-me print is strong yet classic. Not got the extra cash to burn? Why worry, when high street saviour, Mango, is at the rescue? We’ve tracked down an equally modish version of the houndstooth-print coat in a delish wool-blend, for a rather modest price tag. Cashing in at £59.99, you’ll have enough left over for a second splurge. Just don’t blame us. So, which one will it be? Shop both coats below. Steep: alice + olivia Mosley long oversize cocoon coat, £250, available at Oxygen Boutique. Cheap: Houndstooth wool-blend oversize coat, £59.99, available at Mango.

Tube strikes? Ha, we laugh in the face of tube strikes – nothing, and we really do mean nothing – can stand in the way of us heading to Jimmy Choo HQ in London’s Victoria and drooling over staring at the brand spanking new prefall 2014 collection. And the Jimmy Choo.08 collection, to use its full and proper name, really was brand spanking new, as we saw styles we hadn’t really seen from the English brand before – and that’s largely thanks to creative director Sandra Choi’s new vision. “I love feminine silhouettes, and Jimmy Choo has become synonymous with the iconic stiletto which we continue to reinterpret with every collection ,” said creative director Sandra Choi. “I know, from my own busy life, and from speaking to other women, that we also crave the same glamour and attitude in shoes that we can run around in all day, which is why I created the CHOO.08 mood.” Glamorous, feminine shoes with bags of attitude are exactly what we saw before us in the stunning showroom, each piece fiercer and more covetable than the last, if you can believe it. Perfect for the modern woman on the go, the collection keeps up with her fast paced yet ultra glamorous life; flats, trainers (and we do love a good Jimmy Choo trainer!), sandals and the sparkliest heels imaginable, this collection has it all! Flats and sparkles Prints and vivid colours Comfy flats and bold trainers Wow factor “look at me” shoes and accessories

With spring slowly creeping upon us, lusting after somewhat impractical shoes is a given. And, this week we’re digging these lush Givenchy studded lace oxfords (£904). Not quite up there with our wear-everyday foot gear just yet, but nevertheless, gorgeous enough to gawk at! Bringing you well and truly out of winter’s dull grip, the striking effect of polished silver studs against angelic white lace and a solid wooden sole gives these Givenchy oxfords immediate buy-me-now appeal, but will you take the plunge? Here’s a little helping hand if you’re stuck on parting with the pounds… Yay Spring-perfect: A great option if you’re looking to update your new season wardrobe by way of statement-making shoes, without committing to a trend. Flats: Well, traipsing around in heels all day isn’t the most foot-friendly of options. Your feet will be utterly grateful for the style and comfort factor rolled into one! Boy-meets-girls: The ever-present androgynous trend shows no sign of waning, and we’re certainly not complaining. These Givenchy oxfords are the perfect mid-way fix for girls who love boyish style. Nay Colour: White. Need we say more? Price: Sitting smug at £904, you’ll have pretty feet, post-purchase. Shame the same can’t be said for your finances… Impractical option: Although they come with a stiff mesh lining to help maintain the shape, lace-enveloped shoes were never a good idea for protecting your feet. Suddenly, puddles and unpredictable downpours will become your worst enemies. Givenchy studded lace oxfords, £904, available at My Theresa.
Read MoreIs the Madonna-Miley collaboration another justification of over sexualisation?
Apart from looking freakishly similar – despite the 34-year age gap – the cowgirl outfit-clad MTV Unplugged collaboration that involved a Madonna-Miley gyration session before a bunch of fans hardly brought the shock factor. The surprisingly soft-toned live performance, “gentle” grinding and a wobbly-vocal mash-up of Madonna’s “Don’t Tell Me” and Cyrus’ smash hit “We Can’t Stop” seemed to capture the on-looking audience, but we sensed something a little more sinister at play. Not one to shy away from making headlines – who can forget that Madge-Brit smooch at the 2003 VMAs? – Madonna’s recently been covering column inches with her un-parent like behaviour. From using inappropriate captions on Instagram to allowing her 13-year-old son to pose with a bottle of alcohol, she courts controversy with ease. And, then there’s Miley; the 21-year-old world-famous for her brazen display of provocative behaviour, very little clothing and a tongue that refuses to be put to bed (inside her mouth). So, what do these two ladies acting in a sexualised manner on stage mean for their legion of fans, most of whom are either young girls or women? Well, given Madonna’s old enough to be her mother, we feel as though Miley’s performance was overshadowed by the sheer control (or lack thereof) Madonna displayed when grinding against the “Adore You” singer. After all, she’s a mother, in the public eye, and with a greater onus on her to portray herself as a positive role model. Yet here she is egging on Miley’s ostentatious on-screen personality, by joining in with a cringe-inducing wind ‘n’ grind session and, to an extent, justifying the over sexualisation of girls Miley is often associated with. Although there’s nothing outwardly wrong with what Madonna was doing upon that stage; it was her partner in grind (sorry, we had to) who […]
Read MoreThe Golden Globes 2014: The best dressed!
Golden Globes time! Yep, it was the 71st annual Golden Globe Award ceremony in Beverly Hills yesterday, and the red carpet was once again full of the biggest and best-dressed names in Hollywood. TV and films stars alike came together for one of the biggest nights on the awards season calendar, and to say they pulled out all the sartorial stops would be a bit of an understatement, as we don’t think our list of best-dressed celebs has ever been this big! Lupita Nyong’o definitely stole the show for us with her effortlessly elegant Ralph Lauren caped look (we got flashbacks to Gwyneth Paltrow’s Tom Ford cape dress at the Oscars a few years ago) while Olivia Wilde and Camila Alves also made our jaws drop with their glittering gowns courtesy of Gucci Première and Dolce and Gabbana respectively. Unsurprisingly, Sofia Vergara went for the wow factor in a large Zac Posen dress, while Jennifer Lawrence went for a Dior dress, as was expected. Take a look at the full list of our best-dressed ladies below and let us know who took your breath away! Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren Olivia Wilde in Gucci Première Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen Taylor Swift in Carolina Herrera Camila Alves in Dolce and Gabbana Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad Couture Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung Margot Robbie in Gucci Emma Watson in Dior Couture Mila Kunis in Gucci Première Amy Adams in Valentino Couture Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace Kerry Washington in Balenciaga Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein Emma Roberts in Lanvin Naomi Watts in Tom Ford Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta Allison Williams in Alexander McQueen
Read MoreAnna Wintour is Worst Dressed of the Week in Prada
We’re looking over our shoulders as we write this, in case, y’know, Anna’s style army is hunting us down. That’s Anna Wintour, in case you were wondering. Spotted in what may become a Worst Dressed Of The Year contender pretty soon, Madame Wintour took to the red carpet for the season three premiere of ‘Girls’ earlier this week, in a Prada Spring 2014 fur coat. But this wasn’t any old coat. No. Painted boldly with a woman’s portrait, the snug cover-up was perfect for battling the New York City deep freeze, but Anna’s overall styling left us in a *facepalm* pose for some time. Paired with an even longer skirt (what?!) and knee-high leather boots (no Manolos? Where are the Manolos? Bring back the Manolos!), Anna’s styling went the complete opposite way to the runway-ready, easier on the eye look. Sporting her signature bob and stern semi-smile, the American Vogue E-I-C decided to add some extra oomph to the “eughh” factor by adding a peculiar looking scarf to the mix. Yes, we get that you wanted to chill-block, Anna, but this outfit just screams “NO!” Pull up the skirt hem and ditch the scarf, and you might have a winning look on your hands, but this time, you’re so not in vogue, Anna. Read MoreIsabel Marant Holden sandals: Yay or Nay?
Spent the holiday season stuck in heels? Are the balls of your feel crying out in again, begging for a break from the four inchers sat in your shoe closet? If so, then cast your eyes on this week’s Yay or Nay shoe, because there’s not a platform or kitten heel in sight! Enter the Holden leather sandals by Isabel Marant. Better known for her sell-out wedge sneakers, Marant has worked her magic in fashion’s newly favoured ‘ugly shoe’ department, and the result? Uber-comfy, quilted leather sandals perfect for your next sunny venture. But, would you dare slip into them? Check out our reasons for saying Yay and Nay to a heel detox (yup, that’s a thing) below: Yay Your podiatrist would be proud: Given the health benefits often associated with wearing heels are few; a heel detox is just what the doctor podiatrist ordered. Comfort never looked so good. Great price: At £280, although not the cheapest in te market, the Holden sandal has decent price point for high-end leather. Carry-through trend: After Phoebe Philo made it OK to shamelessly wear furry Birkenstocks, the surge in ‘ugly shoes’ has been impressive, and is still going strong. Heels? What heels? Nay Not weather-proof: Well, given we’re battling unpredictable weather this side of the pond for most of the year, making a splash in the Holden sandals, or risking frostbite, is the last thing your feet will want. Lazy effort: As much as we love the comfort factor these sandals offer, the casual factor may just go too far. Paired with tailored wool trousers in a glossy editorial, they may look the bomb, but in reality, you risk dirty looks from you boss for wearing these to the office in the name of “fashion.” Permanent pedicures: We can all admit to […]

Choosing the perfect jewellery for that special someone in your life can be a daunting task. If you’re planning to splash out, your gift needs to be exactly right. Rings and watches are among the most popular and long-lasting gifts, and they can be worn by your partner every day. Whether you’re buying for a birthday, an anniversary, or another celebration, follow our simple guide for success. Rings Before you even enter the jewellers, make sure you have a good idea of the style your partner prefers. Think about the rest of their jewellery; is it gold, silver or rose gold? You should choose something that matches tastefully. Engagement Rings If you’re helping a friends partner to choose the right ring to pop the question borrow a ring from your friends jewellery box to get the size measurements right. Not every woman favours a diamond engagement ring, but if you get a hint that her preference is traditional, do some research into what you can expect for the budget at hand. The cut, clarity, colour and carat of a diamond are all factors that influence the appearance and quality of the gem you choose. The cut and clarity impact on the sparkle of the diamond, and a poorly cut gem can seriously compromise its appearance. The colour of diamonds does vary, the clearer and more colourless diamonds being substantially more expensive. Set a budget for the ring and stick to it; remember that you still have to save for the wedding, and for your life together. Watches It’s important to remember that a good quality watch is an investment, so shop around online on reputable sites like Market Cross Jewellers. If you’re considering buying a timepiece for your partner, make sure you know what they would choose. Drop some hints […]

She accessorised with a simple but oh so sparkly necklace, and added even more wow factor to her look with some big voluminous curls in her hair. Read MoreSeasonal Skin Care For Clear Complexion All Year
We all want to maintain the perfect complexion throughout the year, but as the weather shifts, drops, rises and changes it can feel like the seasons are working against us. We ask a lot from our skin as the year progresses; we want it to evolve with the weather to give us everything from the perfect sun-kissed summer tan to the quintessential Christmas rosy cheeks, but the best results require more than a splash of factor 30 when temperatures spike. If you want your skin to adapt and embrace the seasons then you have to adapt your skin care routine too by visiting experts, like Mrs Pharmacy, to keep your skin care products well stocked. So what should you do to keep up with the weather? WINDY WINTER There’s a magic in the air in winter that helps us to love those dark, rainy days and cold, long nights, but that magic isn’t quite enough to help your skin bare the effects of the icy wind. Instead of fresh, rosy cheeks, a lack of vitamins and exposure to the elements can cause dry, itchy skin that can really dampen our mood during the festive season. What To Eat – Simply altering your diet can hold the key to a clear complexion. Stodgy comfort food can be a necessity on a blustery night, but make sure you still build up your skin’s defences by eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Oily fish is also a great way to get Omega 3 into your system which is a huge support to your skin. What To Do – Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate. Letting dry skin build up on your face doesn’t just lower your confidence, it also decreases your skin’s ability to retain moisture and allows toxins to build up. Find an exfoliator […]

You don’t have to be on the Christmas card list to take a peek at the Kardashian klan’s holiday card. Most of the Kardashians can be seen posing for David LaChapelle for their annual Christmas card, and this year, despite their being a noticeable absence of some regular faces (no brother Rob, or any of Kim, Kourtney or Khloe’s other halves or little North West), the card looks busier than ever! The first thing we noticed (well, two things) were Kim Kardashian’s breasts squeezed into a Saint Laurent Paris dress with a sexy high split. Who knew the holiday season could be so raunchy? Kendall and Kylie Jenner showcase their modelling credentials as they pull their fiercest poses for the occasion, while Kourtney’s children Mason and Penelope bring the cute factor to the proceedings. The Christmas card also delves into the Kardashian archives as old pictures of the family can be seen scattered around throughout the card. Do you like the Kardashian Khristmas 2013 card or did you prefer the simple all-white card they sent out last year? [Gossip Cop]

Read MoreThe 2013 American Music Awards: The best dressed!
The annual American Music Awards took place in LA last night, and it’s pretty safe to say that the ladies – whether they worked in music or not – did their bit to make sure they stood out on the red carpet, on stage, and even in the audience. White was a big theme on the red carpet, with Miley Cyrus, Christina Aguilera and Nicole Richie opting to wear the shade – or lack thereof – as they arrived at the ceremony. While a newly-slimmed down Christina and perma-skinny Nicole went for dresses with cut-out detailing to show off their toned and flawless figures, Miley went for a chic tux instead. Didn’t expect that, did you? Elsewhere on the red carpet, the wow factor continued with a stunning Oscar de la Renta look from Katy Perry, a dazzling Dolce and Gabbana dress from Ariana Grande, and a Versace-clad Lady Gaga arriving on a white horse. We couldn’t make it up! See the rest of our red carpet hits below and let us know who your favourite is… Katy Perry in Oscar de la Renta Taylor Swift in Julien Macdonald Ariana Grande in Dolce and Gabbana Lady Gaga in Versace Jennifer Hudson in Christian Dior Naya Rivera in Michael Kors Christina Aguilera in Maria Lucia Hohan Zoe Saldana in Roland Mouret Miley Cyrus in Versus Versace Ciara in J Mendel Heidi Klum in Marchesa Nicole Richie in Emilio Pucci

Considering the fact that she has an endless supply of Christian Dior dresses to choose from, as well as a perfect figure and an infectious personality to match, it’s always going to be a hard task to upstage Jennifer Lawrence on the red carpet. However, her Hunger Games: Catching Fire costar Elizabeth Banks is giving it a jolly good go –and we think her latest red carpet look is one of her best efforts yet! Elizabeth really brought the colour and wow factor to the red carpet, choosing to wear a bright orange strapless floor-length Atelier Versace gown to the Hunger Games: Catching Fire Los Angeles premiere last night. We only wish the backdrop was a different colour so as not to clash with the dress! We love her voluminous blow-dried hair, striking eye make-up and minimal accessories. This look is absolutely flawless and we couldn’t fault a single aspect even if we tried.
Read MoreThree ways to style your winter boots
Boots are an absolute must for the autumn/winter season and one of their biggest selling points is their brilliant versatility. They can be worn with almost anything in a wardrobe, from skinny jeans to a hippy-chic lace dress, a smart skirt suit or leggings and a casual top – the options are almost endless. Here are three ways to get the most wear out of your beloved winter boots this year. Go brave with bare legs Teaming ankle boots with bare legs and a well cut smock dress is a great way to tick plenty of different fashion boxes. It looks ultra on trend but is also a great way of keeping comfortable during those busy days. Xtra Factor presenter Caroline Flack is the poster girl for bare legs and she demonstrates how bypassing tights can still look classy when items like chic camel coats are added. Tuck in those jeans High heeled boots are brilliant for elongating limbs, especially when they are tucked into skinny grey or black jeans. Mixing sleek items with oversized pieces is what the true fashionistas do, and so if your jeans are super slim make sure you add some volume on top – think combining slim bottoms with an oversized shirt, a chunky knit or a billowing tunic. Add a statement necklace to add even more interest. Go midi Wearing midi skirts is a great way of mixing up your wardrobe. Vintage inspired midi skirts are really on trend right now and they look perfect teamed with ankle boots and a thin knit jumper or smarter top. If you are going for midi then make sure you choose a winter boot with a chunky or stiletto heel – the mid length can look a little unflattering with flat styles. Moda in Pelle is a […]
Read MoreCharlize Theron, we love your style
Charlize Theron’s red carpet appearances have been slightly limited this year – compared to the last few years at least – but that doesn’t mean she hasn’t left a lasting impression. Au contraire, we know we’re going to get nothing short of perfection when she steps out onto a red carpet… the proof is in our five favourite Charlize Theron looks of the year below. 1. It was her appearance on the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts Inaugural Gala red carpet which prompted us to reminisce about Charlize Theron’s unrivalled red carpet style; she looked like a true Hollywood goddess in a black and gold Alexander McQueen dress. The attention to detail of the dress was breathtaking, and Charlize made it come to life even more! 2. All eyes were on Charlize Theron at this year’s 2013 Academy Awards, which was a pretty impressive feat considering the red carpet also featuring stand-out appearances from Oscar-winners Jennifer Lawrence and Anne Hathaway, among others. Her pure-white Dior dress was purely magical, and her hair, make-up and accessories were also flawless too. 3. If anyone can work a pixie crop like a true pro, it’s Charlize Theron. She’s championing one of our fave British designers Stella McCartney on this occasion, and as well as showcasing Stella’s fine work, is showcasing her own perfectly bronzed and toned pins at the same time too. Talk about a head-turning appearance! 4. We’re noticing a bit of a theme here, as Charlize has blown us away in yet another monochrome dress. What her outfits lack in colour they certainly make up for in terms of wow factor. This belted Jason Wu jumpsuit is no exception. 5. Looking like a statuesque work of art, Charlize Theron looked phenomenal in a strapless floor-length Gucci dress at the Cinema […]

Novelty factor: Don’t you just love that ‘meh’ expression on the face of the clutch? The gold glitter perks it up no end, and, frankly, we need to add it to our brimming emoji collection! NAY Limited carrying capacity: Although we love that the Vanessa clutch could safely house an iPad, and offers the perfect mirror for emergency lipstick touch-ups, its box form means you won’t be able to squeeze much else in it. Think hard: Is a two bag situation your thing? Price: With a hefty £800 price tag, will you be willing to take the financial plunge? It doesn’t really boast tote-sized qualities to justify its price tag, so you’ll need to do […]
Read MoreSaint Laurent Tartan Dress: Yay or Nay?
Oh, the joy! Remember when Hedi Slimane shunned all elements of a Parisian nonchalance and, instead, offered us Courtney Love on the runway? Yes, we’re talking about his unabashedly grunge-drenched autumn/winter ’13 collection for Saint Laurent. Plaid, tartan and sequins aplenty, fashioned into suitably louche (we call is glamorously lazy) dresses, knits and shirts, we couldn’t help but pick out a few winners from the collection. And one of the chosen designs that had us whopping with sartorial joy was this preppy (think Alexa Chung holidays in the Scottish Highlands) embellished tartan wool dress. Putting a razor shape slant on a classically feminine shape and style of dress, we love the mesh-lined knife pleats and sequin bow-detail neckline, not forgetting the spiked crystal embellishment at the waistline. But being the savvy shoppers we are, we’re going to take a rational approach to Californicating our wardrobes, by considering the yays and nays of buying this girly-goes-gritty number below: Yay Ideal length: The thigh grazing mini dress is ideal for pairing with tights, ankle boots and a cardigan for the full Saint Laurent effect. Or, wear it as a pleated mini skirt, by pairing with a cosy, block colour jumper. Day-to-night dress: The traditional tartan wool print is a great winter wardrobe hit, whilst the sweet-yet-tough embellishments wouldn’t put you out of place at an impromptu post-work party. Classic tartan: The runways were awash with tartan, plaid and all manner of check prints for autumn/winter ’13, but a classic tartan print never ages (and is possible more attractive than the laundry bag print celebrated at Céline.) Nay Trend-centric: Dreading the one-wear-then-despair situation? Although tartan is a cyclical trend, this was also one of the most talked about Saint Laurent collections. Figuring out whether you want a piece from a popular collection and […]

Wedding Insurance As much you want your big day to go smoothly, mishaps can occur and, sometimes, factors beyond your control can take over. Read MoreInspirational vs. Inane: Is the lure of the luxury good worth dreaming about?
If recent research is anything to go by, then the luxury goods industry is booming. Booming beyond cultural and financial borders; letting the emerging economies ride the Prada-lined wave of upscale consumerism, and shaking up the belief that the recession has been a turn off for spend-aholics. From Chopard to Chanel Couture and Piaget to Burberry; luxury expenditure hasn’t slowed down, and we’ve got China to thank for that, amongst newer markets such as Malaysia and India. But does the hike in highly priced goods being snapped up justify the production of what we here at MFL HQ like to call The Super Shopper’s Set? Point in case: this week’s super-spend wish list add-ons: Ray Ban’s £2,893 Aviator sunglasses (below) and, wait for it, the £70,000 platinum stilettos by House of Borgezie (pictured above). Items many of us don’t flinch at the idea of dropping a hot £100+ bomb on, and ones that are often our most prized possessions. If you’re not already gawking at these price tags in utter disbelief, we’ll describe the items in a little more detail. Said sunnies aren’t your average hide behinds, but, in fact, rimmed with an £18ct yellow gold frame. Not only that, but, only 1,200 have been put into production, further upping the exclusivity factor. Heels are the holy grail of a woman’s daily get-up (don’t deny it, you loafer-shod liars), and justifying a Jimmy Choo splurge is, often, a necessity. But what if you suddenly wanted a shoedrobe to rival Tamara Ecclestone’s? You’d be spoilt for choice trotting around in the custom-made Cleopatra stilettos, which can be crafted in platinum or 18ct white or yellow gold. We wouldn’t really blame you if the price tag processing part of your brain, as well your overstretched, extremely worried bank account may need to […]
Read MoreParis Fashion Week SS14 highlights from Balmain, Lanvin, Nina Ricci & more
There was a lot of action in Paris yesterday, as spring/summer 2014 collections from Balmain, Lanvin, Nina Ricci, Balenciaga and Paco Rabanne hit the catwalks. Rosie Huntington Whiteley lent a helping hand to Balmain, as she closed the show in a beautiful sheer number which undoubtedly got all the red blooded males in the audience very excited. There was a lot less razzmatazz in the new-season collection; a conscious decision made by Olivier Rousteing who said that he wanted to see what the stereotypical Balmain girl (who loves her some eveningwear and partywear) looked like at 9 in the morning. A great concept – and one that we would definitely get on board with. Balmain for breakfast sounds like a great idea to us! Alber Elbaz made it all about the shine factor over at Lanvin, as models came out in shiny, mirrored garments – some of whom did so while carrying what looked like bin bags. Bin day has never been more glamorous! Reflection was also a very prominent theme on the Balenciaga catwalk, as models strutted up and down the runway with mirrors surrounding them – capturing their each and every move from a variety of angles. There was no chance of missing one of Alexander Wang’s creations with the mirrors there! The Balenciaga girl is a tad more sporty, active and casual this season. It doesn’t look like we can go a single day without something new from Miley Cyrus popping up; earlier this week we gushed over her Harper’s Bazaar magazine cover, yesterday we dissected her brand new music video in great detail, and today it’s all about her appearance on Fashion‘s November issue. Yes November issues are already been released -where has the time gone, eh? Miley was photographed by Chris Nicholls, and is rocking a Kufmanfranco dress for the striking, attention-grabbing front cover. Inside the mag, as well as posing for some gorgeous pictures (not a single poked-out tongue, foam finger or wrecking ball in sight) Miley opens up about that MTV VMA performance, her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, and her taste in fashion… “I can go through so many clothes say ‘no, that’s not me’ right away. I’m so adamant and controlling and OCD about my work that I can scare some people—especially when it comes to clothes,” she said. “I have a very specific style of my own and I think it is better to be stylish than trendy. I find vintage Celine or Chanel and mix it with athletic or vintage pieces makes a look modern and fresh. Vintage makes everything look punk.” And what about her Gwen-Stefani-esque outfit she wore while arriving at this year’s MTV VMAs? “I found what I wore on the red carpet to the VMAs with Pharrell. It was a Dolce and Gabbana piece from 1992—the year I was born. He saw it and said, ‘you have to buy it.’ I think that outfit added a factor that the other girls couldn’t compete with. “Pharrell says it’s not about what you’re wearing; it’s the way you wear it. That was a lesson I took to heart. I think it is important that I […]

Despite the grey skies, multiple clouds and sporadic bursts of suede-boot-ruining-rain, London Fashion Week definitely kicked off with a bang. The spring/summer 2014 shows were eventful, action-packed and inventive… and we can’t wait for some of the trends to hit the high streets in months to come! Here are some highlights from a few of our favourite shows: One of the great things about LFW is the support it gives upcoming talent by giving it a platform to showcase itself – and the Ones to Watch show is one of the best ways to introduce new designers to the world. This season was the turn of Hannah Williams, Helen Lawrence and Renli Su; three very different but equally beautiful collections. Helen Lawrence presented soft, pastel hued pieces, while Hannah Williams went dramatic, theatrical and larger-than-life. Renli Su went for unstructured, minimal, casual and unassuming. If you’re after a girly, sugary-sweet (almost too sweet) collection, then look no further than Yeashin! Candy colours, porcelain doll aesthetics and fairy tale inspired pieces floating down the catwalk Bernard Chandran was another favourite – the intricateness, the colour, the texture, the wow factor! There was a definite rich and royal theme running throughout the collection; luxury done right! Shimmer, attention to detail and wet-look hair was what we took away from the Felder Felder show, while it was dramatic biker chic over at Todd Lynn. And we weren’t the only ones who seemed to enjoy the Ping He show, as front row-ers Laura Whitmore and Poppy Delevingne appeared to be loving it too. Monochrome, tough and edgy pieces dominated the catwalk, with some intricate patterns and gravity-defying bee-hive hairstyles to boot. Todd Lynn DAKS

Time to turn up the glamour factor, we think. Tomorrow is the start of London Fashion Week which means you probably have your show outfits all sorted by now, so we reckon it’s a good time to snap up a perfect party piece to celebrate and commiserate the end of another season when it’s all over in a few days’ time. And no one does glam partywear quite like Lipsy, right? The best thing about the Lipsy embellished bandeau dress that we chose today is that it can be worn to one fab occasion after another; prom, a family wedding, a cocktail party, birthday drinks (yours or your best friend’s) – you name it! Bandeau dresses never go out of style; go bold by teaming this Lipsy embellished bandeau dress with some sky high caged heels in a contrasting bright colour, or go demure by opting for some chic black shoes, a clutch and accessories instead. Read MoreDakota Fanning wows in Elie Saab Couture at Venice Film Festival
Dakota Fanning has once again taken our breath away – this time with her appearance at the 70th Venice International Film Festival over the weekend. The blonde 19-year-old actress stunned in a midnight blue Elie Saab Couture gown which was very apt considering she was there to promote her brand new film Night Moves. While Dakota opted to go for the fairytale princess factor by opting for a sparkly floor-length dress, there was a certain amount of daring sex appeal to it… just look at that plunging neckline! The rest of her look was kept simple, with only Rona Pfeiffer and Cathy Waterman rings on her fingers by way of accessories. We think her natural freely-flowing hair stopped the look from looking too prom-like so we’re glad she didn’t go for an intricate up-do on this occasion.
Read MoreThe selfie-centred nation: Snap happy or plain crazy?
Hello, and welcome to the millionth conversation about turning the camera on yourself. The selfie really exploded this week, legitimising its existence by snapping up a place in the Beverly Hills equivalent for words, Oxford Dictionaries Online. Every person (and their shoe-clad pug) has discussed and dissected the art, and how to perfect it. (Thanks, Stylist magazine) OK, so we’re not going to tutor you on how to take one – unless you’ve been living in Transnistria, without your smartphone, and subsequently don’t understand the science behind applying filters, perfecting angles and getting the ideal ‘hotdog’ leg shot. But, instead, what we want to talk about is, whether, the suggestion for a “digital detox” is at all valid when we’re being bombarded with these addictive titbits into everyone’s lives. Instagram can be called upon as the main culprit for spearheading our obsession that little bit further, but Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook and endless Pinterest repins of pretty blogger/fashion bod figures are equally to blame. We’re not slating the selfie; it’s a satisfying feeling like no other, when you land a flattering, sun soaked shot that makes your body resemble Kendall Jenner’s (thanks, Earlybird and Sutro (Google them)). But more and more experts are telling us to “switch off”, “tune out” and effectively, take a technological self-cleanse, or a “digital detox” to stop our frazzled brains from burning out, and recovering some of that smartphone-free time we once cherished. Remember? Funny, though, the mixed messages we get about social media. Turn to print magazines and they tease you with snippets of information which lure you back to “tuning in.” Case in point: Voguestagrams. The fashion tome asked readers to post pictures of them with the hefty September issue, using #voguestagram. Aren’t we supposed to be losing ourselves in the magazine, instead of […]
Read MoreLadylike style: Prim and proper, or just plain boring? (We can’t decide)
We want a twee twinset, live for Celine’s floaty, knee-length skirts, and can’t say no to a good old British afternoon tea: are we really turning into FLOTUS/K. Middy clones, with our sensible slingbacks and a penchant for co-ordinated accessories? OK, let’s blame Zara (and Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton for attributing ‘fetch (yes, fetch) status to low-heeled pointy slingbacks our mothers would probably like to steal borrow. But what about the appropriate dressing bit? Kate Middleton (naturally) champions it; Michelle Obama has pretty much nailed the haute housewife look, occasionally throwing an awe-inspiring Jason Wu number into the mix. And, now, even Kim Kardashian is doing a personal rendition of conservative, FROW-worthy looks for everyday, thanks to beau Kanye’s influence squeezing every last bandage dress out of her wardrobe. But, it’s interesting to figure out whether this realigning of wardrobe affairs to rival our mothers’ is due to the above-mentioned tastemakers constantly being forced before our eyes. If it weren’t for the hundredth mention of Kate’s coat-dress or the First Lady’s hemline sparking a new wave of anti-thigh skimming-anything trendsetters, would we care so much for a demure dress? Bringing us back to reality with his sharp comments on the First Lady’s attire, a few months back, Simon Doonan put it bluntly: “She dresses appropriately. I don’t think of her as being chic.” It holds true, that we dress in accordance with our roles and duties, and, often relay messages about our identity through the daily sartorial choices we make. But can the chic-factor immediately be dropped when an influential position is at the forefront? Doonan’s comments also sparked the following question in our minds: If appropriate dressing can’t be chic, then is the housewife trend a redundant fad? There was a time (pre –Kate Middleton), when sensible dresses, simple pumps […]

We urge those of you of a prudish disposition to look away now. Even though its mascara flies off the shelves and is already in the make-up bags of the majority of make-up-wearing women, Benefit Cosmetics has decided to go for the shock factor and create a viral video for its product. So, a few Jersey Shore cast members and some hyperbolic shocked female faces later, the Real Men Don’t Fake It Benefit mascara advert was born! “We wanted to find a clever way to play on real vs. fake double entendre,” said Claudia Allwood, a spokesperson for Benefit. “It’s irreverent and cheeky, so overt you can’t possibly take it seriously. We at least hope to make someone giggle.” In a nutshell, the ad features a host of male characters displaying, erm, large packages in their undergarments, with the surrounding females getting predictably excited. Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino is joined by comedian Brittany Furlan and actor/rapper Simon Rex, and you can check it out in all its cheeky glory in the video below. What do you think? [Mashable]
Read MoreRochelle Humes wears Dolce and Gabbana for One Direction This Is Us premiere
Leicester Square was overflowing with One Direction fans yesterday as they waited for the boys to hit the red carpet for the London premiere of their film This Is Us. To say there was a lot of online and real-life buzz around the event would be the understatement of the century! However, as dapper as the boys looked (especially one Burberry clad Harry Styles – if we were a few years younger!) it was the girls who had our attention on the red carpet; Rochelle Humes in particular. Rochelle, i.e. one fifth of The Saturdays, definitely got our best-dressed crown, as she hit the red carpet in a stunning Dolce and Gabbana dress that fitted her like a glove. We don’t even need to mention how jealous we are of her post-baby figure… The yummy mummy styled her hair in an effortless, dishevelled side plait, and continued the wow factor theme of the outfit by opting for a sparkly Swarovski necklace, a daring shade of red lipstick and red chain strap bag. It was a tough job standing out from the crowd but Rochelle certainly managed it!
Read MoreA prime example of smart casual courtesy of Eva Longoria
Going out to dinner with the boyfriend or to a show with the girls but not quite sure what to wear? Perhaps you have to make a mad dash for it after work and you haven’t got time to change? If you find yourself in this sartorial predicament and are a bit stumped for outfit ideas, we’d like to refer you to Eva Longoria’s latest look for inspiration. The pint sized former Desperate Housewives actress got the smart/casual/sexy balance just right when she was spotted out in LA the other night on her way to celeb-fave Katsuya. She proved that you don’t need to always go for a tight fitting dress or pile on the accessories to turn on the glam factor, as she looked effortlessly chic in a pair of white trousers, a smart loose-fitting printed blouse and wow-worthy Brian Atwood sandals. The shoes definitely did the talking as far as this ensemble was concerned – no one can deny the power of a fierce pair of heels! Taking a fab but versatile pair of heels into the office for last-minute outfit changes is not only advised, but heartily encouraged if you often find yourself rushing off somewhere dressier after work. We love the cute hairband, too! [Image]

With autumn/winter 2013 already setting the tone for accessories that’ll make the cut come September, snakeskin was a prominent trend. But we’re not talking traditional (read: boring, colourless) snakeskin. No. Updating the luxe skin for fall, every designer, from Marios Schwab to Gucci, were busy injecting rich hues of red, ochre and green into their designs, offering a new lease of life to upscale accessories, shoes and clothes alike. And leading us into next season nicely is the Fendi chameleon snakeskin duffle tote; an extravagant take on the trusty tote, and one that’s sure to turn heads, thanks to its vivid banana and black colourway and exquisite gold-toned logo hardware. Tempted to add it to your handbag collection, and see in autumn/winter with a splash of vibrant colour? We’ve rationalised its purchasing potential, and summed up the reasons for and against snapping up this piece of Fendi finery. Yay Luxe factor: If you’ve a penchant for luxury skins, then this snake leather tote is the ideal option. Statement investment: The chameleon tote is a twist on the classic Fendi duffle bag, so you’ll be investing in an iconic style, updated effortlessly for the new season. Practical: With a detachable belted crossbody strap for casually slinging over your shoulder, or top handles for when you want to up the chic ante, a 2-in-1 bag situation is always a winner! Nay Price: Yep, you guessed right. Sitting at the premium end of the accessory world, Fendi doesn’t translate to financial stability, as such! Priced extravagantly at £2,340, you’ll need solid friends for a (permanent) loan, or survive lunch-less at work for at least a year! Colour: If fruity hues haven’t been to your taste since Stella McCartney’s citrus invasion for spring/summer 2011, then the chameleon tote’s blaring banana tone won’t be too popular, either. Longevity: Applying the five-outfit rule, […]

Read MoreRise of the luxury basics
Forming the foundations of a well-honed wardrobe, basics play an important part in everything from outfit recycling to look-building. Those vital pieces we return to repeatedly, without the fear of being accused of the ‘same outfit’ by fellow fashion friends, are crucial to making our wardrobes work that bit harder. But the recent return to comfort and causal cool in fashion has inevitably seen a rise in demand for these basic clothing items, marking them out as something of a luxury product. Take our current sneaker obsession, for example; upscale department store, Liberty has reworked the classic Nike Air Max 1 trainer with its iconic print, and now we’re keeping them on our feet post-work commute. Isabel Marant’s continuous stream of reworked £300+ wedge sneakers are instant sell-outs on luxury e-tail sites such as Net-a-Porter and Matches, and a plain cotton tee is no longer a snatch-and-grab lunchtime buy at Topshop, but rather a well thought out James Perse or T by Alexander Wang affair, cashing in at £60 and above. Whatever happened to keeping basics basic (pardon the pun)? In a time where print and maximalism overload seems to reign freely, are we all scurrying back to the neutral nonchalance of the Nineties, minus the grunge factor? A clean style slate is always a winner, especially if you don’t want to conform to a particular trend tribe, but are the upscale prices and luxe labels automatically attached to plain garments that don’t look much different to their high street alternatives justified at all? (Cue: £11,000 diamond skinny jeans.) We guess the runways are partly to blame, thanks to the likes of Balenciaga, Alexander Wang and Céline championing the minimalist movement, making us want to ditch our Mary Katrantzou prints. But if the fashion gods are dictating this newfound love […]
